I hadn't planned on seeing Another Earth at Sundance, but a familymember gave me a ticket, so I had no idea what to expect. After the first few, tragic minutes of the film, I didn't know if Iwould be able to watch it. How do you recover from the main characterof the film killing a pregnant mother and child? It was so upsetting, Ididn't want to watch anymore, but I imagine that's what thewriters/director had in mind.I've seen reviews refer to this movie as Science Fiction, but I don'tsee it that way at all. There is the component of the second Earth, andwhat it might possibly mean to those of us on Earth I if exact copiesof us were living on Earth II. But that's not what this story is about. It's about tragic heroine Rhoda, as portrayed by co-writer BritMarling. Brit's performance was outstanding. Though you never reallysaw her lose it out about her actions, she had this undercurrent ofsorrow throughout the entire film. She reminded me a little of aprettier Chloe Sevigny. In the first few minutes of the film, thelead-up to the accident, I wanted to yell at the scream I was soinfuriated. The realism of the impact, as well as the child's lifelessbody on the ground, made me wonder how I could ever forgive thischaracter, likable actress not withstanding. And yet, I did. Rhoda punishes herself for her mistake as she tries tosettle back into "normal" life, and it seems acceptable and appropriateat first until you start thinking about all the lost potential, underscored by her running into an old schoolmate.John, the survivor of the accident played by William Mapother (LOST),should be worthy of pity as he first appears, his life destroyed, andyet it was Rhoda I was rooting for as she encountered him. Once in hislife, the script takes a predictable turn as you wait for that finalshoe to drop. But it seems so likely for all to be forgiven, as Rhodasaves John and brings him back to the living. But life just isn't thateasy. As the final twist occurs, Rhoda giving John her dream ticket to EarthII in case his wife and family remained alive in that world, I hopedthat he would somehow miraculously forgive her. Rhoda and John were sosweet together, I didn't want to see them separate, but there wasreally no way for the couple to get past the truth. The film is full of lovely shots, the second Earth effect though simpleis impressive. The story is engrossing, it was the first of only twofilms I saw at Sundance that my mind never wandered from. The writersmanaged to create caring for a young woman who committed such acareless act after I was convinced I couldn't have any, which of courseis helped by Marling's flawless performance. The interaction betweenthe couple grew wonderfully, reaching its peak when John plays themusical saw (performed by Natalia "Saw Lady" Paruz, sounding nothinglike you've ever heard a saw sound before) for Rhoda.Beyond touching.I have only one complaint about the film. Even a member of the audienceasked about it. If John has gone to Earth II to reclaim his wife andfamily, isn't there another John already there? It's a big pretty issueto get past, and I do wish the script had addressed that probability. But overall, it's a fabulous film, although if you're expecting sci-fiyou will be greatly disappointed. It is a psychological film that keptme on the edge of my seat throughout. Brit Marling has been referred toas the "it" girl of Sundance, and I have no doubt that she and directorCahill will go on to many more wonderful things. On a side note, I raninto Ms. Marling at a cafe today, and she was quite lovely and thrilledto speak to me and hear that I enjoyed the film.
This is not sci-fi. It is a very slow art film (is that redundant?).The type of film that hangs on a shot while absolutely nothinghappens... over and over again... hoping people in the audience findthe effect profoundly moving. There was almost no plot, very littledialog, and next to no action. The main character was supposed to be depressed but instead wasportrayed as flat -- so flat she inspired no empathy. Her flat affectwas emphasized by the flat still shots that artlessly hung on her, which did nothing to convey the depth of her despair, but made me thinkabout the depth of my own in sitting through this. The one thing I will say is that I wanted to see how it would end sincethey brought in this 'other planet' as a plot device and would have todeal with it sooner or later. The last 20 seconds of the film -- thefinal scene -- was better than the entire rest of the movie puttogether, but that's not saying a whole lot. But at least on top ofeverything else it didn't have a bad ending (in my humble opinion). If this film had avoided the artsy and leaned towards the gritty, itmight have had a better shot at entertaining.
I had already read that the second Earth wasn't really an importantpart of the story. And since it was an implausible/nay, impossibleoccurrence I focused on the journey Rhoda took to deal with her guilt. That led to a love story. What a nice story that was--John slowlycoming out of the alcoholic coma to notice his cleaning girl has brainsand charm. And she comes out of her depression as she becomes hisfriend. But this immediately becomes problematic as John is now fallingfor her and she happens to be living a lie: she killed his wife and kidand a fetus. If she doesn't tell him she's going to bring him even MOREpain! Around that time he plays the saw for her (great scene) and thenlater they kiss. I watched to see if sex was involved and I don't thinkthere was. If there was sex she clearly wronged him. He'd never haveagreed to unknowingly fornicate with the killer of his family. If shereally liked him, (which I think she did) she wouldn't have let him doit. To make love with him would have been a huge lie. Then I find that half my movie group thought they DID make love. Ifthat's true I lose about half my admiration for her. And since there'sdoubt, it becomes a flaw in the movie. Why don't directors make itclear when people make love and when they don't? I liked the ending . .. . the one where their non-consummated friendship is furthered by hergiving him her ticket. She's saying she wants him to be happy and she'sopen to finding happiness on this earth.
I found "Another Earth" simply superb, it encapsulates so many rawemotions effortlessly. The movie starts off very dark and gloomy, foreshadowing a strong and in-your-face type of movie. However do not be put off by the beginning, as the story progresses itdevelops into a movie that starts to make you think about theprotagonist and manages to an extent change your perspective of thesetting and characters within the first twenty minutes. Throughdifferent human interactions and the stories that are shared bringshope and a sense of magic when faced with adversity and sadness. Thereis a sense of mysteriousness connected with the other earth, that ismagically entwined within the plot it seems unnoticeable yet you canstill feel it. The movie ends with a sense of puzzlement and joy, almost giving the viewer a shock yet after the movie you realize howeverything works out in the end. The abruptness associated with thisfilm in certain scenes only makes the movie dramatic and enjoyable.Closing this marvelous movie with a sense of sanctification andaffection for everyone in the story. "Another Earth" certainly plays with your emotions, it is an emotionalroller coaster. Incorporating fine details making this movieunpredictable in certain aspects and WORTHWHILE to watch. The beginning for me was quite shocking and abrupt, which I think wouldbe quite dramatic for any opening scenes. It shows the open reality oflife and how the consequences you make affect your entire life. I donot recommend watching this as a FAMILY movie. It is a movie thatshould be watched by yourself so you truly understand how thecharacters develop throughout the story. I was worried that this wouldbe another one of those lame movies with no sense of story andanticipation but instead the story effortlessly the draws you inwanting to know what will happen next. The movie shows moments whereyou can empathize for some of the characters and how these momentsreally draw on RAW emotion that is portrayed. I kept wanting to knowwhat would happen next and the decisions the characters make whichtruly define the movie. Some bits may leave you wondering and ponderingthe situation but the movie promises to give all answers, believe me. The first few seconds of the movie can seem very gloomy BUT you mustkeep watching on to understand that this gloominess and abruptness wascrucial for the movie as towards the end everything becomes much moreclear. The movie is quite complex yet with its simple perfection allowsthe viewer to understand what is happening within the movie. It took afew seconds for me to realize how impacting this movie really was.During the credits I got it, don't worry it may take several minutes tounderstand but you WILL understand what the movie is trying to convey Just like a roller coaster, the movie leaves you wanting MORE!
If you can sit through this slower than a turtle film with the depth ofa mud puddle; then they should study you to help cure people withattention deficit disorder! How in the world could we just now discoveran earth-like planet that's so close to our planet that it appearslarger than the Moon in the sky? And can even be seen in broaddaylight? If you have any hopes of seeing this planet up close, or it'sinhabitants, don't hold your breath- as you won't. I fail to see whythe sci-fi angle was even added. Obviously they realized the writingand story were horrible, and they needed something to lure people intowatching this garbage. Occasionally throwing in 'gems' like the firstcontact scene to keep the audience awake, or from walking out of thetheater. If the casting director was shooting for 'plain Jane' when he/she castBrit Marling they sure hit the nail on the head! I hope for the sake ofher acting career it was how the director wanted the characterportrayed- boring and with no depth whatsoever. The whole thing reminded me of a college students attempt at an'artistic' movie....and I'm talking freshman with a straight C average. The story is nothing new or exciting; and there surely weren't anyphilosophical points touched upon that a teenager hasn't alreadyrealized. The people that consider this art are very likely the same ego-drivenpeople that would pay a million bucks for canvas with random paintsplatters all over it- resembling something a two year old couldcreate. The same people that can look at a bowl of fruit for hours andsay it's brilliant and full of meaning.Don't waste your time with this one unless you're looking for analternative to Valium!
Apparently the film began as a kind of philosophical question posed byBritt Marling to the director about meeting yourself. While this mightsound like an interesting topic of conversation over drinks, dinner orwhatnot, and might make an interesting film, Another Earth isn't aninteresting film. Its central characters are too remote as to make muchof an impact in any event but spend most of their time lookingdewy-eyed at each other. The filmmaking style is full of twitchyhand-held cameras and jump cuts that scream "independent filmmaking atits most thoughtful!" without really fitting the subject matter orthemes. I wanted to like this film quite a bit, as the idea of a mirrorearth is at least intriguing, but the film itself is more about theself-importance of upper middle class white than anything else.
Overly artistic/abstract. There are constantly long, drawn-out scenessimilar to that of Family Guy without any shred of intentional humor. The cinematography is very similar to that of The Office. Thesoundtrack consists of both depressing orchestrated or choir-like solosand unpleasing synthesized noises. In the previews alone, you can recognize the anomaly within thisparallel planet which makes you curious as to what happens. Do notexpect a single question to be answered. The anomaly itself explainsthat an answer is not possible, therefor lacks the thought provoking,mind-bending scenario that most are looking for.Although this film wasn't based on a book, it would have been muchbetter if it remained a paperback novel. I'm rather lenient with mycriticisms, but this movie honestly isn't worth your time.
I went into this drama not really knowing anything about it. I justthought the name was kind of neat, and the reviews weren't to bad. Itis a pretty slow film, and you can tell it was shot on a budget. Ididn't mind it at all though, I found the story to be down to earth.Rhoda Williams plays a timid girl, and I found her acting to be quitegood. There is some really cool shots in this movie, and I liked how alot of it was filmed. Definitely not for everyone, but to people withan open mind, they should be able to enjoy the film for what it is. Ifind a lot of these indie films can be quite good, and some can behorrible. This one sits in the mediocre range for me. Hope this helps!
Putting certain things in words sometimes is just not the same as theraw feeling or thought itself. That is why we make music, books, paintings, films, etc. To convey and share with others the unknownquestions, doubts, emotions that we experience in this grand andmystical life. When someone is being truly honest you get a film like Another World. It is someone like you and me, bringing up thoughts and concerns thatwe all feel in a cinematic way. Questions about identity, life, itsmeaning and purpose as well as all the things the film elicits fromyou: the watcher. When you watch this film, or experience any art form, the mostimportant thing to do is to find for yourself how you can learn fromit. Not on your own terms, be it some scientific logical way or the waysome movies explain everything to you, but in a way that you letyourself be immersed in the world created by someone who respects youthe audience. Please watch this film, I am sure that if you see thismovie with an open mind you will get something out of it that is bothrewarding and beautiful:) I did.
Every year I get really excited about the handful of indie films thatpop up in the festivals and threaten to break the normally terribleindie mold. Another Earth showed up on my radar during a Pom WonderfulGreatest Movie Thing screening at my local pseudo-art cinema. My wifetold me to keep calm and not to set myself up for disappointment, but Idon't listen. I am my own man, and I wanted a space drama.I'm going to synopsize for a second and although it's sort ofspoilerish, the trailer covers every bit of it. Brit Marlin plays RhodaWilliams, a smart young teen who goes to the big house for a few yearsafter sending a man's entire family to that big Another Earth in thesky. She comes back after her release to apologize to John Burroughs(William Mapother), but can't bring herself to tell the truth andultimately starts a torrid little affair with the once brilliantcomposer. During all of this, she writes a moving essay that wins her atrip to the other Earth, which was discovered the night of heraccidental slaughter party. Truth is told, lives are changed, sad indiemusic plays. On paper (or your favorite digital text viewer), this script isfantastic. There's a nice element of sci-fi suspense overarching a veryuncomfortable drama. There isn't a moment of their relationship youstop thinking "Jeez, she is really adding insult to injury in an epicway", and you anxiously wait for the honest moment that has to happen.Nobody can live life with that big of a lie hanging over them, andnobody is going to react well to that kind of information. Tension!Drama! Uncomfortable! Yessssss! But none of that ever happens. Sure, she tells the truth and he's upset, but neither are anywhere close towhat everybody in the audience feels. *I* was getting anxious for thetruth, *I* was getting angry for Burroughs, but neither Williams norMapother broke enough from their permanently blank looks to convey anyof those emotions in a satisfying way.I hate to blame the partial failure of the movie on the acting, but Idon't what else caused it. The story was compelling, interesting, andwell-crafted; every shot was a work of art from the lovely twilightwides, to the CGI earth in the sky. I should mention that theincredibly talented Fanton brothers of Bentlight Digital helped withAE's special effects. They also worked on a great short my wife and Idid sound for called Source. No faults there, as far as I'm concerned.Brit Marlin starts the movie with a smile, leaves prison with a blanklook on her face, and never looks back. And as much as I loved Mapotherin LOST (eeee!), he really didn't get angry, sad, or happy in anybelievable way. It really boils down to believable acting in a story sodriven by human emotion. While Another Earth raised some interesting questions about paralleluniverses, the larger dramatic story dragged along lifelessly under theweight of sub-par acting.
I am a psychiatrist and psychotherapist who can tell a hawk from ahandsaw, and there is a wonderful handsaw in this movie. So, I feelqualified to tell you it is safe to see this movie as it is, withoutworrying about details like gravity. Do not allow unimaginativenaysayers to keep you from enjoying this gem. I mean, we all can enjoyvampire and zombie movies, right? Is any movie any better than "Let theRight One In"? I saw this movie last night in Brookline Mass at a Q&Apreview, with director, writers, and an actor -- all combined in twolovely people. No one in our sophisticated audience that included aCETI scientist cared enough about the "laws of physics" problems tomention them in the question period. All we cared about were theendearing characters, the music both acoustic and visual, the plotdevelopments, the shocking climaxes, the compelling emotionalplausibility. The movie is not about anything as terrestrial as gravity. In the worldof this movie, something has happened to upset some kind of cosmicsymmetry, and the other earth has appeared from a parallel universe. Ido wish some character or other had dispelled the physics with "I don'tknow why our orbits are not affected". But, the metaphor works as a wayto discuss looking at oneself. It really does not matter. The acting isperfect, the camera-work perfectly beautiful, the plot deeply affectingwith wonderful surprises.
Would anyone really want to spend the day with himself/herself ifhe/she found there was a planet that contained an identical self foreach of us? "Uh, remember in 5th grade when I-you-we..." "Yep, Iremember, I was there too..." Who cares. Interesting premise, but Ithink most people would be bored of themselves pretty quickly; evenidentical twins/triplets/quads aren't that similar. And everyone wouldalways suspect everyone else of playing "switch-a-roo" tricks onothers. The movie asks a lot of questions, and the audience fills in its' ownanswers - that's weak writing. And what is the John Burroughs character going to do on "Earth 2"? Ishe going to find his other self with his wife and children, and say,"Uh, I know it's not your fault that a drunk-driving ditsy-ding-batslaughtered my family on Earth, but, uh, I want to take your place uphere on Earth 2 so I can be with my family again...uh..." ?The acting was a bit stiff throughout, but it wasn't terrible. BritMarling as "Rhoda Williams" was perfect as a sort of gawky "Olive Oil"with a pretty face; she played an "outsider" really well. I never feltbad for the "Rhoda Williams" character, but I could not take my eyesoff of her either. It's a very moody, atmospheric film of littleconsequence.
This is partially in response to a previous review which offeredmultiple complaints about the film's writing, and by reading such areview, you may skip this film for thinking it stupid and illogical.First Problem: The other Earth had supposedly been hidden behind thesun and we, the brilliant explorers of the cosmos, were entirely unableto see it? The review claims this "makes no sense." However, with alittle time studying astronomy--amazingly, you would see how (at leastto the non-NASA-level-of-astronomy-knowledge folk) plausible this is,given the massive amount of unexplained phenomena in our galaxy, noteven to mention the universe beyond the Milky Way. Physics does notfunction correctly, certain planets in our galaxy spin the wrong wayfor reasons unaccounted for, etc. Many irregularities can be attributedto a planet that we are unable to see/find. It's amazing how very, verylittle we know.Second: The author I refer to claims that it would not take four yearsto contact and travel to the other Earth, because the other Earthappears to be ten times bigger than the moon in our sky. Not accountingfor depth difference, because clearly the other Earth would be muchfarther away than the moon or it would affect our atmosphere and tidesand magnetic field...Anyway, the moon's diameter is a bit over 3,000km. Earth's happens to be nearly 13,000km. So indeed, the sizedifference would be rather pronounced even with the other Earthsignificantly farther away from us than the sun. Lastly: I'll just quote. "Brit Marling's character's name was notrevealed to William Mapother's because she was a minor? She was asenior in high school and off to MIT so I don't think she would be aminor, and even if she was I'm sure the victim of the accident would bein the trial and see her face." Okay. Come on now. Legally, her namewould not be released, least of all to that man. That man, by the way,was stuck in a coma until long after she had gone to prison with herconviction. And, yes, seniors in high school tend to be 17-18 yearsold...and she was 17, as they said.Anyway, it is a fascinating film. Don't just "get past" the parts thatmay be difficult to believe offhand--do a bit of research to add evenmore depth to the film for yourself. Don't expect a typical story arcwith developed characters and perfect character foils and development.Expect real emotions and extraordinary circumstances and real reactionsto them. It does not feel like it was written to entertain you withcomedic relief and exposition scenes and the like, but like a glimpseinto an unamazing life that manages to inspire and amaze despite itsunambitious state.
When I saw the trailer to this movie, I instantly was interested in it.The idea of another earth that is identical to ours was an awesomeconcept. Sadly, this idea is not explored as much as I would haveliked. It focuses more on the story about the main character forming arelationship the man whose wife and son she killed in a drunk drivingaccident. I would not have minded this if the story had beenbelievable, but it just wasn't. Because of this, I felt that theamazing idea of a second earth was lost in a movie that should of beena lot better. My problem with the relationship story was that it wasunrealistic. Sure, I can believe that she wouldn't have the courage totell him the truth, but once she starts going back to his place, itstarts to lose me. The way their relationship unfolds seems verystrange and forced. I think it might have had to do with the casting ofWilliam Mapother as John. I didn't really believe him as a lovingfather and husband who lost his loved ones. This causes the rest of themovie to become weak. If it had been a different actor, I might haveenjoyed it a bit more, no matter how unrealistic the storyline got. Inconclusion, "Another Earth" could have been so much better, and left mewanting more details about the second earth. I give it a 6 out of 10.
Imagine if there was another Earth, man, then there would be, like, another you, man. So you just have to live, man, because, like, nothingelse matters. According to South Park (and they are right) there arethree types of hippies: the giggling stoners (usually harmless hippiesfound in the attic); the drum-circle hippies (the annoying ones foundin the backyard); and then the worst kind of all, the collegeknow-it-all hippies."Another Earth" is written by, for and about college know-it-allhippies. They philosophize about what this appearance of another Earthmeans, about their life on this Earth versus that Earth, and about howto get to that Earth. Apparently this isn't just another planet but areplica of our Earth and everything on it. How it was discovered isn'timportant. What is important is how it affects the meaning of life aswe know it. That assumes we know what the meaning of life is. At leastcollege know-it-all hippies know what it is.I do like genre-pushing films and I like the fact that this is ascience fiction film without aliens and without space ship crashes. Thefilmmakers worked out how to tackle the idea with a really low budget.Unfortunately it resulted in college know-it-all hippies philosophizingabout life with poorly written dialogue. I was much more impressed with"Moon" (2009) a low-budget science fiction film that focuses on theinternal struggles in a character study."Another Earth" only focuses on college know-it-all hippies and sincethey really don't have much substance or value to bring to our Earth, they have nothing to save another Earth.
OK this was a RedBox rental and I'd hardly heard of anyone involved init so we rented it with no expectations other than my husband clearlythinking I'd rented another set of weird movies. We watched this the same night as The Future so that bar was quite lowafter that. The characters are believable but their actions at times not always somuch. I can't see the two main characters hooking up as they did andtheir chemistry was good but not of a sexual nature. The way Rhoda tries to make up her crime of killing his family in ateenage drunk driving incident is in many ways understandable... butgoes beyond the scope of reason. The ending sort of redeems the movie at the end when you realize Rhodahas given up yet another one of her dreams (after missing out on herMIT education and what might have followed due to jail) and not takingthe trip to the Other Earth. What is going on when she sees herself at the end is rather confusingand didn't close the movie with me.All in all I found it thought provoking but my more mainstream husbandthought it was stupid. You decide.
From the name of the title (and I guess from watching a bit of thetrailer, but not all, since I don't like spoilers) I thought this filmwas about traveling to another earth, identical to ours, where we couldstart over or live in a reality where our mistakes could have beenmissed, but with some kind of plot twist, of course, to make itinteresting and/or make us think a little.Thats not what this film is about and neither is it suited or peoplewho like sci-fi but can't have a sci-fi film where the science behindit isn't correct, because this film has a lot of things unexplained orjust highly unlikely. But that's not what this film is about. This film is about two people,a man who lost his pregnant wife and son in an car accident and thegirl who is to blame for it. Brit Marling does a wonderful job makingus empathise with what the character's thinking, from that moment sheunderstand what she has done, to the moment where she understands thather future in MIT was lost, or from the moment where she feels like allshe can do is make his life a bit better day by day, to the moment hetells her about the teenager that killed his family. And WilliamMapother doesn't fall behind, as he plays the role of a man who doesn'tcare to clean up his house and who plans on spending his life drinkingto forget. However, the two roles make a wonderful combination when hefeels happy for her and suddenly asks her to stay, because then, herguilt burns her inside out and she ends up confessing, a moment whereyou feel both her repentance and his spine-chilling dreadfulness.Yes, a sad story that didn't really end well, depending on how you seeit. My version is that while Rhoda from Earth 1 suddenly decided togive her ticket to John, Rhoda from Earth 2 decided to run away, andboth found out the sad truth just by that moment, since she could onlyhave gotten the ticket after submitting her attempt, which she did inorder to run away from all that. At least that's what fits well for me,what makes the movie perfect.I find it really interesting that Brit wrote her own script for this, since it's a nice initiative and it came out beautiful! It was indeed a wonderful piece that moved me more than I would'veimagined. It's just so tragic that both their lives ceased and eventhought some might argue that it's her fault, neither of them deservedit, which makes you think it isn't fair, but it's not supposed to befair or unfair, it's just... life.
The writers and producers have been receiving so much praise for theirimagination and writing talents, that I just had to point out that thisplot line and concept has been mostly seen before in "Journey To TheFar Side of The Sun" (1969). It was originally titled "Doppelganger";and may have even been a made-for-TV movie. In that movie, every actionon one Earth was exactly duplicated and MIRRORED on the other Earth; sowhen an exploratory mission was launched to explore the other planet, they 'returned' in half the expected time. I guess the science fictionand proposed astrophysics were more likely to be accepted in 1969. Iunderstand that "Another Earth" has a different focus and direction, but some mention and credit should be given to the original.
Another earth to help us see ourselves. A serious accident to show ourhuman drama. So with the movie we are encouraged to see our own humandrama on our own planet. The people on the other earth are us! We havealready forgotten the impact of the picture of Earth taken out of theApollo capsule. We live in a world where wars and conflicts are raging.Where millions suffered and are suffering. Where a financial crisis isgoing on. Where we are unable to solve our problems. In the movie ourworld is suffering, the other world is how it can be. The composer'sfamily is alive. Rhoda finished her study. Rhoda sees her better selfin the end of the movie. The other world population is how we could be.The other world is a jewel in the sky. The other world is the jewel weshould keep in mind. The movie helps us to change our perspective, fromhaving to accept grim reality as it is on this world to a dream for abetter world. Only a jewel in the sky of our mind, our dream, keeps uswanting to change the world for the better. As Rhoda gives her journeyto the other world to John, so we should give to the other in a moreurgent need. I think this was meant with the movie.
Brit and Mike, the writers, a director, and great actress.I'd love to see this as series, always starting over on the day bothearth's glanced to the heavens and finally knew we are not alone, andthen later knowing were not alone among ourselves.Oh I need ten lines, The visuals of other Earth were well nice, goodjob SPFX. The sex(although not by any means over the top)wasn't needed, but brought the climax. It could have been just brought out with thetruth. All in all great flick, I've told my friends and thanks again Brit andMike, I'm now looking up other work you've done.
