No comparison...

I remember after seeing "Deep Impact", thinking to myself: "You know, thatwas rather enjoyable...but what would it have been like as a comedy?" Asifthe gods of movieland heard me, along comes "Armageddon." This movie is afriggin' laugh riot. I mean, not only does Ben Affleck play a totalbonehead, but Bruce Willis plays his girlfriend's angry dad! That's reallyoriginal! And then of course, there's the other great characters: thegoofynerd guy (Steve Buscemi), the Mr. Nice-Guy flight director-or-whateverbossman (Billy Bob Thorton), the big bad, yet funny, black guy (MichaelClarke Duncan), and the funny fat guy. Oh, I almost forgot thestraight-laced REAL astronaunt who can't stand the new guys horning in ontheir turf! Wow, with originality like this, I can't believe they had sucha great script! A giant asteriod is going to hit the planet and only BruceWillis' gang of misfits can save us! Where the heck do they come up withthis stuff?*Spoiler Warning*And, wow, what an ending! Bruce Willis pushes his daughter's boyfriend outof the way so he can sacrifice himself! And then he waits until THE LASTPOSSIBLE SECOND to detonate the bomb! And then (get this!), when he does,there's this really sweet montage of memories of his daughter. Speaking ofhis daughter, she's played by Liv Tyler. Wow, what a great actress! I canhardly tell she's only in the movie to help sell Aerosmithalbums!

The best movie ever

I have to disagree with anyone who has anything bad to say aboutArmageddon. It is the best movie for a girly night in and also for anice night in with your partner. I first saw it in the cinema nearlyeight years ago and its still my favourite movie. Its just such a warmhearted family movie and you can imagine yourself caught up in thesituation, it sucks you right in and has you believing every word HarryStamper tells his daughter Grace. The ending is so outrageous but sobelievable you'd have to be stone hearted not to shed a tear. Afternearly eight years of loving this movie i still get emotional whenHarry stops AJ giving up his life so AJ and Grace can live happily everafter. Apart from the movie being fantastic the song to go with it isjust amazing and I'm proud to say it will be the first dance at mywedding with the guy i went to see Armageddon with all that time ago.

Great movie...

I think it's a great movie because it shows us the "possible" and verylikely future of mankind, although it is very unlikely because thereare many ways for the Earth to be destroyed. I like this movie becauseit shows us that now, humans can stop this natural nemesis. Especiallynow, because this movie was aired 5 years ago, I think. The actors aregreat and the plot is awesome. But I wondered how could a bunch of oildrillers find themselves on a trip to an asteroid? I think they werevery lucky, I wish I could go into space for free. Anyway, it's a greatmovie and I think, if you hadn't already seen it, you should.(P.S. Great visual and audio effects!)

The worst movie of the past decade

Armageddon ignores the essential physics and its plot is so dumb andpredictable, that I had to put in an enormous effort to sit through themovie. Have you seen any of North Korean movies depicting their resistanceagainst en evil imperialist forces ? Armageddon handles the characters andthe plot in similar fashion. I was kind of expecting Bruce Willis to jumpoff the asteroid and get safely back to earth after deploying and emergencyparachute. Every rational person around the world must have sufferedwatching such a movie.

cool, unbelievable - simly incredible - really great!!!!!!!!

I'm fond of this movie altough I've seen it several times... The storie, the actors, the special effects are unsurpassable - due to them it doesn't bear a comparison to other movies... I really liked it...

Run, don't walk AWAY from this disc!!!

Banal garbage to the extreme. The whole thing looks like the negatives were thrown into a Cuisinart and when they were dumped out the director said, "wow, it doesn't get any better than this!!"... after he'd downed five bar shots of vodka and rum. Nuff said. Dan

The BEST Film EVER !!!!!!!!

Armageddon is one of the best films ever...Michael Bay did a real good joband Jerry Bruckheimer.Bruce Willis did a good job playing an oil driller and Steve B. was veryfunny.This film was realistic and had a good story. (Deep Impact was very bad).Both thumbs UP for Armageddon !!!GOOD STORY and GOOD actors !!!

I've seen this movie numerous times and i bought it. And ever since I bought it i watch it all the time it was really and truly one of the best movies i've ever seen my deep thanks to the dirctor,his workers and cast for inspiring me!

Critically frustrating yet somehow personally satisfying...

Armageddon (1998)It's loud, it's big, it's explosive, it's cheesy, it's dumb, a film soHollywood-ised it is noticeable in almost every scene. Armageddon is flawed, from its shallow characters, to its outrageousstoryline and beautifully sentimental scenes and general lack oforiginality. However, there is something about this film, that I dolike. Past all its negatives, it manages to be entertaining, somewhatfunny and at times strangely emotionally intense. So there must besomething in Michael Bay's 140 million dollar blockbuster that wentright and something must have, because this was hugely successful.Why are there 3 helicopters flying over in every single 'emotional'scene? and why do we always get that slow motion effect? Armageddon, asI said is critically frustrating, yet somehow personally satisfying andfor that it saves it self from an extremely low rating.5/10

American Flag waving at its best

In a Strange and silly way Armageddon works. I sat though the whole moviethinking you cant do this, or it doesn't happen like that, or that wouldn'twork, but you know what? I was having so much fun I didn't care. Sure itwas kinda cheesy, and the laws of physics only applied when the plot calledfor them, much like for example, how the coyote from RoadRunner fame onlyfell when he looked down. It is important to note that the filmmakers don'ttake themselves to seriously and made the film quite light hearted andlaugh out loud funny in places. Maybe it was meant to distract us from theplot flaws. Michael Bay is proving to be quite adept at making actionfilms. His trademark break neck pace is slightly annoying here as the moviegoes to long and the pace has sufficiently tired us towards the end. However he has tried for a smite more sentiment in this film than in hisprevious outings and maybe he is looking to branch out from the action filmbusiness into perhaps Period Drama's. I think his camera work would goover well in a heated argument scene between two lovers (a lady of themanor and a stable boy), I can even seen that slap being filmed in slowmotion with some nice lighting effects with a rock track back it up. As Isaid before an enjoyable movie that if you haven't seen, I recommend you do, even if it is only For Steve Buscemi's scene stealing, movie making oneliners. The one thing I must bring up before I end this rant, is why wouldyou install a forward facing Gattling Gun? Maybe the minds that developedthe Space Rover thing, anticipated finding some aliens that were hostile onthis Meteor. Much like for example the Bugs from Starship Troopers. Ormaybe you can't make a blockbuster movies these days with out little bit ofgunplay.

wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! ...... just a joke

Well where to begin...This film is one of the worst and boring i have everseen in my life.Shame on Bruce Willies (i really liked him in 5thElement).The story starts when an asteroid is heading towards Earth and theUSA Government (as usual) is trying to avoid the collision by sending someBig Heroes (including big BRUCE of course ) on this really dangerous spacerock(!!!!!).And the big drama begins ,i wont tell you more just to keep youanxious about the end(....).Firstly the background story is a bit childishiwould say.Secondly the acting is standing on a zero level.Thirdly thismovie didnt impress me at all with the effects.Conclusion:If you like good action movies dont see this one.

Must have for any movie collection

While blending action and comedy maybe a known recipe for success, howabout action, comedy, and the end of the world? After seeing the movieArmageddon I now know that such a combination is not only possible butin this case a recipe for an extremely entertaining movie. Michel Bayalso known for such movies as Bad Boys and The Rock, manages to pulltogether all the critical elements necessary for a good film inArmageddon. The all star cast includes Bruce Willis, Billy BobThornton, Ben Affleck, and Liv Tyler just to name a few. To add to thegreat cast are good special effects (including a meteor shower indowntown New York) and a rocking musical score including bands such asAerosmith, Bon Jovi, and ZZ Top.The basic premise of the plot is that a giant asteroid is detected on acollision course with earth. After NASA studies the asteroid theydetermine that the only way to destroy it is with a nuclear warheadplaced precisely on a fault line in the middle of it. The next stepthey take is to call in some of the world's best deep core oil drillers(led by Bruce Willis) and give them the task of drilling an 800 foothole on the asteroid in which to place the bomb. Over the course oftheir endeavor this ragtag group must overcome a variety of challengeswith the fate of the world hanging in the balance.Despite the serious subject matter Mr. Bay manages to integrate a greatdeal of comic relief without going over the top (More like Bad Boysthan Rush Hour). It is this fine tuned balance in which humor andaction blend that makes this movie great. An example of some of thehumor can be found in the following quote:When the asteroid is first discovered by an astronomer he calls it intoNASA while his wife sits next to him:NASA Director (Billy Bob Thornton): Now listen Karl, this is topsecret. Astronomer: Sir, I'm retired navy, I know all about classified.But one more thing. The person who finds her gets to name her right?NASA Director (Billy Bob Thornton): Yes, yes that's right, that'sright. Astronomer: I wanna name her Dottie after my wife. She's avicious life-sucking bitch from which there is no escape.Aside from the action and humor this movie manages to turn one of thecharacters into a hero and by the end you find yourself rooting forhim. Don't worry about the fact that this is a Sci-Fi movie, it doesn'tslow you down with technobabble and there are no life sucking aliens.As far as plot goes this movie may not be some great work of art,however the plot progresses in good fashion. While for the first timeviewer the occasional minor twist livens up the movie, the plot as awhole is good enough so that it does not rely entirely on suspense orshock value (No M. Night Shyamalan here). Simply put, this movie has ahigh re-watch-ability value shifting it from the rent – for – a – nightto the buy – for – your – collection category.

A Republican Manifesto?

The Criterion Armageddon DVD is very good, some decent extras. I stillquestion Criterion's poor lack of judgment in releasing the DVD at all,though, since there are so many quality movies that would more greatlybenefit from a Special Edition Criterion treatment. As usual, though, theCriterion DVD is technically over-rated. The sound on the entire Extras DVDis extremely poor, and is just very hard to listen to atall.More interesting, though, is that on a second viewing it becomes kind ofobvious what a Republican manifesto the whole movie is. Michael Bay's gagreel on the Extras DVD largely consists of Billy Bob Thornton'sstereotypical and offensive gay impressions. Greenpeace is portrayedunsympathetically early on in the movie protesting the oil drilling (is thateven a real cause of theirs? Save the oil?). Bruce Willis, the hero, shootshis gun all over the oil well, like a crazed NRA member. Maybe I am wayoff-base, but some of these images (especially Billy Bob's meanness) made meupset. This definitely is not a liberal movie.

I'm dizzy...

If a nonstop barrage of explosions, screams, and flashes of light that wouldblot out the most expansive 4th of July make for a good movie, thenArmageddon would win 15 Oscars. By the time this thing was over, I waspraying for something substantive to happen, preferably in a quietscenerio.But of course, given today's standards of whatever you can do-I can makelouder-special effects, what else would you expect?How about characters we can like? With the lone exception of SteveBuscemi(who I would like in anything), the characters were devoid ofsympathy. The Liv Tyler character was especially obnoxious. I found myselffast-forwarding every scene she was in half way through the movie. Not agood sign.How about credibility? It helps if the plot isn't so full of holes youcould toss an asteroid the size of Texas through it. The entire scene on theasteroid was devoid of science, physics anything real(eg.,an astronaut'svisor is broken and instead of his body exploding from lack of pressure, itjust lays there, bleeding).Special effects alone do not make for good story. A nonstop barrage ofspecial effects and a marginal plot line with obnoxious characters makes fora bad movie.

Big Hollywood Roller Coaster

Well, in retrospect, this was a really big movie. There was no matchfor it in it's time and now it's classic (at least for me). This action/sci-fi was made under probably the most powerfulproduction/direction in Hollywood today Jerry Bruckheimer / Michael Baywith mega cast on stage --Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Billy Bob Thornton and SteveBuscemi. All top actors play their parts well, Thornton and Buscemitruly shine.Soundtrack is flawless to say at least, while Trevor Rabin deliversmemorable classical theme and brings the atmosphere to every picture(this is his best so far), Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Patty Smith and Journeybangs out their biggest hits.Film is overly very well made, flawless cgi (nice tackle to Emmerich'sIndependence Day). Everything nicely explodes and sounds, some smallovertones are seen on the asteroid, like those "in space sounds", "inspace fires", low gravity issues, but hell, if it was all madecorrectly it wouldn't be such a fun. So stop complaining, film-makersknow that there is no sound in empty space, no oxygen to burn fires andmuch less gravity, yet they do it this way. Big time movie.

A mockery of the entire movie community!

Okay, I suppose I have to be fair to all movies because most do deservemerit, but I must say that ARMAGEDDON was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The acting was unconvincingand just plain awful, the plotwas weak and the only thing that I found remotely interesting was the romancebetween usually great Affleck and Tyler. To see Ben in this role however,was a let-down.

The Rock Bottom

So you think this is just dopey action film? You think you can just turn offyour brain, lower your expectations and enjoy it? Well your wrong. You canhave your brain removed and your brain-stem will still cry for mercy.When the subject of "Space Dementia" comes up you will either laugh or cry,neither of which is what was intended. And you will puke when Ben Afleck andLiv Tyler lay around and play with animal crackers.There are ways you can oggle Liv Tyler without enduring the wretchedexperience which is this movie. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
