| Storyline | The Burlesque Lounge has its best days behind it. Tess, a retired dancer and owner of the venue, struggles to keep the aging theater alive, facing all kinds of financial and artistic challenges. With the Lounges troupe members becoming increasingly distracted by personal problems and a threat coming from a wealthy businessmans quest to buy the spot from Tess, the good fortune seems to have abandoned the club altogether. Meanwhile, the life of Ali, a small-town girl from Iowa, is about to change dramatically. Hired by Tess as a waitress at the Lounge, Ali escapes a hollow past and quickly falls in love with the art of burlesque. Backed by newfound friends amongst the theaters crew, she manages to fulfill her dreams of being on stage herself. Things take a dramatic turn though when Alis big voice makes her become the main attraction of the revue. |
At least that's what I thought; I love the fact that they wear fishnetsand stockings all through out the film fact that they are very pretty. The plot was basic I could tell you have every scene played out beforeit happened. I love Cher and Christina, but the movie kind of draggedon and so many musical numbers. The acting by Christina is OK, Cher Iwould say is better in my opinion. Not a guy movie at all, some lightjokes, and basic dialogue but overall, the dancing and the singing wasgreat, the rest of the movie like the plot and actors were par. thefunniest and best actor in there was Cher's assistant. My two cents
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) Fast service and excellent product. Would recommend as a seller. love the DVD and have watched the movie multiple times.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) I loved the movie when I rented it now I want to have it for my library. If you love dance movies and feel good stories then this is for you.
This is a lousy movie with some of the worst, most utterly hackneyedwriting in the history of movies, but what makes it stand out asparticularly ill-conceived is that the story is Rocky/"Hey kids, let'sdo a show," while the production numbers are faux Bob Fosse.Consequently, the numbers have nothing to do with the story, or viceversa. Started badly when the heroine gave her buddy at the bar moneyto buy a bike for the buddy's kid, then ran down one cliché to anothertill it ended 4 or 5 hours later.Cher and Aguilara sang well, but this isn't MTV, and as a movie it wasawful.
This review is from: Burlesque (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) DVD arrived earlier than expected. Excellent value. Brand new in sealed wrapper. Less than what I would have paid in the video store. Will check Amazon.com before I purchase and DVD elsewhere.
a heaping helping of corn pone laced with a glittering cascade of glitzy production numbers
verything works out very well - except for the audience, which is lumbered with all the embarrassment the film refuses to feel.
Although I read a fairly good amount of negative reviews, I stilldecided to go see Burlesque with my friends. To my surprise, I sat inthe theater for almost 2 hours truly amazed by this movie. It is acliché, a familiar theme that has been told before. Nowadays, a lot ofmovies are clichés. And there are quite a few remakes also. However themovie is truly entertaining, fun, interesting. The singing, dancing, dialogue, acting ... are all excellent. Christina and Cher deliver somegreat songs. The chemistry between Christina and Cam Gigandet isadorable. Cam Gigandet is by far my favorite actor of all time. I am sohappy to see him have decent screen time, and to see him perform such alovable strip scene. I could have paid $500 just to see his Famous Amoscookies scene. I give 10/10. I anxiously wait for the DVD to bereleased.
Brassy, bombastic and cheerfully vulgar...like a Las Vegas casino show on steroids--a piece of glitzy trash that presumably aims to be campy fun but fails miserably to achieve even that low ambition.
I went to see this movie with a friend at the cheap movie theaterbecause we had nothing better to do. Before we went in we warnedourselves that this movie had been getting horrible reviews. I must saywe were both pleasantly surprised and impressed with the movie as awhole. It is not great by any means but it is enjoyable and does notdeserve the ridicule it gets. It's not West Side Story but it alsoisn't Glitter. Christina was about average on the acting scale, enoughfor me to enjoy her performance. Like Crossroads, it is clear thatBurlesque was written for Christina Aguilera; and like Crossroads itgets a bad wrap. The ending was a cliché, Hollywood Happy Endingscenario, but that still didn't take a way from the fantasticperformances, gorgeous costumes, and pleasant story. The romancebetween Christina and her leading man was fake as h--- to easy andwould never happen; but whatever it made me smile. I would highlyrecommend you see the film yourself before judging.
This review is from: Burlesque (Amazon Instant Video) I wanted to see this movie when it came out in theatres but didn't because it got panned by critics and I didn't want to waste $15. But after seeing the mostly positive reviews on amazon.com, I decided to rent it over the weekend. I loved it! So much that I watched it twice before my rental expired. The cast (Cher, Christina, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, Dianna Agron, McSteamy), the music, the choreography are awesome! The story's predictable, but not a deal breaker. Rent it. You won't be disappointed!
In Burlesque Christina Aguilera plays a farm girl from Iowa who runs away to the big city with dreams of stardom and ends up waiting tables at a club run by a nearly bankrupt Cher. Through a series of luck, pluck, and talent she ends up as the big star on the stage. The film has first rate production values and really good acting, the problem is we've seen it all before, several times. The disappointment here is that the acting is darn good. Cher proves why she is called "Oscar winning actress" especially in the scenes where she is becoming a mentor to Aguilera. More importantly Aguilera, having gone through a professional stage of wearing so much make up that Japanese Kabuki actors were saying "chill girl" is now believable as the wide eyed ingénue. The production value and sets are first rate though the songs, delivered by great singers, are pretty forgettable. Cher's opening "Burlesque" is obviously supposed to mirror Joel Grey's "Cabaret" but lack's that number's memorable hooks, but that is the fault of the writers, not the singers who have and use their considerable talent, as Cher says to Christina at one point "You told me you could sing. You didn't tell me you could sing like that!"Ultimately all this can't save Burlesque. If you've never seen a film with this story before you know, "A Star is Born" "Coyote Ugly" "42nd Street" "Show girls" etc any 1970's sit-com, you'll love it. But otherwise no matter how good the acting or how good the production values, this is old hat. You've seen it before and it is all predictable and you know what will happen long before it hits the screen. That fact gets in the way of really enjoying Burlesque as you find yourself ticking off events from a list in your head: "Yup saw that coming, saw that coming, saw that coming." etc
Burlesque is a clear consequence of the success of the TV seriesGlee...a movie without a defined story and focused in over-producedmusical numbers with excessive costumes and a lot of "drama", but nullnarrative value.I kinda tolerated the first half hour from Burlesque, because itsridiculous "dramatic" moments provoked some involuntary laughs on me.Unfortunately, the rest of the film was very boring, due to the factthat it simply recycles what we have seen in like 100 similar movies. In fact, Burlesque has some alarming similarities with Showgirls, butit does not have the sordid atmosphere or the relentless satiricalhumor from that misunderstood movie. Thinking about it well, I think itwould be more appropriate to compare Burlesque with Glitter, Honey andCenter Stage 2, because its weak narrative is at the same level of anycheap soap-opera. So, all that would have made the musical numbers fromBurlesque to be its redeemers, right? Unfortunately, they are soinsipid and tedious that they are among the worst elements from thismovie. As for Christina Aguilera, her performance in here is atrocious and shedoes not show even a remote level of charisma. As for the rest of thecast, I liked the energetic performances from Cher, Stanley Tucci andPeter Gallagher; the other actors (Cam Gigandet and Kristen Bellparticularly) bring such bland performances that their characters endedup being irritating to me.In conclusion, Burlesque is a bad movie with a weak screenplay, badperformances (with the exceptions of Cher, Tucci and Gallagher) andmusical numbers which have an absolute lack of attraction. In summary,a waste of time.
Love it! I specially love the scene with Cam Gigandet and the famous "Famous Amos" cookies. Yum! Makes me want to go eat cookies. It's also a cute scene. I can watch it over and over. Love the glitzy and the glam. Numbers are pretty awesome as well. 5 out of 5 :)
"Get your ass up, show me how you burlesque," growls one of this indulgent movie's indulgent musical numbers that swaggers with pearls, glitter and red lipstick - if not grammatical verb usage.
My Lord, what a voices have Christina and Cher, I bought the Blu-Ray and after I saw the movie I ask me, Why I don't see this movie in Big Screen?. The critics are unfair to this musical, for me, is a wonderful musical, good drama with marvelous voices.I think that you can add this movie in your personal collection without regrets.
The movie is an affront to all things screenwriting; a package of empty envelopes at the cliche factory that actually should have every cliche filing a class action lawsuit to stop the film from using their likeness.
While campy and clichéd, this is a surprisingly enjoyable piece of escapism with Christina Aguilera delivering an impressive turn in the lead role.
This review is from: Burlesque (Amazon Instant Video) I usually like musical movies, Grease, Selena, Purple Rain and The Five Heartbeats, just to name a few. This movie also seemed to have all the right ingredients, yet I found myself checking my watch several times. I think maybe the many heavy full length (non-contemporary) song and dance numbers overpowered the thin storyline. The acting was good; however I found Cher's face as distracting as Melanie Griffiths and Meg Ryan's.
This review is from: Burlesque (DVD) This was one of the most entertaining films I have seen in a long time. Christina was amazing. From the start of the movie you actually forget that it's Christina playing the roll of Ali. The viewer forms a strong friendship with Ali right from the start. Cher brings the house down, not only with her acting but her powerful ballad that deserved to win the Golden Globe and hit #1 on the dance chart. You really get to know Tess and want desperately for her to keep the club and make it the biggest attraction in Hollywood. All the characters interact splendidly. Especially Tess and Shawn and Tess and Ali. The way Ali and Jack's relationship grows is compelling. The dancing was beautiful as well as the directing and writing. Over all the movie was just down right amazing. Everyone I have recommended to see it (men and women) have said that they loved the movie. If you haven't seen it yet, seriously what are you waiting for?
