| Storyline | Fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) directs the first movie he didnt write himself Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) as mismatched cops. When a bust goes wrong, they get suspended, forcing Willis to sell a treasured baseball card in order to pay for his daughters wedding. But while selling the card, it gets stolen, sending the pair on a wild chase featuring a parkour-loving housebreaker, a hot Latina trapped in the trunk of a Mercedes-Benz, a 10-year-old car thief, and a lot of other goofiness. Its hard to believe that Smith didnt have a hand in the writing, as the comedy has all of his loose, ramshackle habits (and his reliance on jokes about poop and male genitalia)--though much of it also has the feel of being improvised by Willis and Morgan. Cop Out wants to mock buddy-cop movies, but it also wants to be a buddy-cop movie these conflicting impulses are never harmonized, so the whole movie feels out of tune. The star-studded supporting cast includes Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seann William Scott, Fred Armisen, Kevin Pollak, Adam Brody, Rashida Jones, and Susie Essman. |
This is the worst Bruce movie I have seen. I only gave it 2 stars because of some of the good one liners. But I'm not sure if it was possible to swear anymore then what they had the actors swearing. And no I am not offended by swearing. I probably swear more then I should and I can honestly say this movie just might annoy a drunken sailor.
As a fan of director Kevin Smith's, I had curiosity of watching CopOut, but not too much enthusiasm, because the history has shown us thathe is a better screenwriter than director, and that when he wandersfrom his traditional formula, the result is atrocious (let's rememberJersey Girl). So, Cop Out faced two important problems: the screenplaywas not written by Smith, and the film had nothing to do with the styleand formula he established with all of his films, with the exception ofthe previously mentioned Jersey Girl. However, I decided to give themovie a chance...but it unfortunately ended up being a truly horrible"comedy".Since his first film (the extraordinary Clerks), many people criticizedSmith for his poor visual style.Frankly, I was never bothered by thatcharacteristic (or lack) in his films. But what I discovered in Cop Outis that Smith's weakest point as a director is his ineptitude forkeeping a consistent rhythm...an organic flow from the story whichtakes us from the beginning to the end with naturalness.Fortunately, infilms like Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, we had sparklingdialogs and intelligent humor in order to get distracted from thenarrative inconsistencies. However, with such a poor screenplay like theone from Cop Out, Smith's limitations as a director are noticed, andthey ruin the few attributes which could be rescued from it.As for the cast, Tracy Morgan makes a competent work; pity he did nothave a better screenplay to work with.Bruce Willis feels forced andbland in his character; this is not the acid and subversive Willis fromDie Hard, but the irritating and affected Hollywood star from Live Freeor Die Hard.In the supporting cast, the solid actors Adam Brody, KevinPollak, Seann William Scott and Rashida Jones are absolutely wasted ontheir roles. So, in summary, Cop Out is an irritating and pathetic film experiencethat I do not recommend by any means.I understand the ambition thatimpulses Smith to transcend his niche, and I respect his value fortesting with new genres (if "odd couple of cops" can be considered as"new").However, his talent is limited to a defined range, from which heshould not stay away.I hope that he learns the lesson, so that he doesnot make pieces of crap like Jersey Girl or Cop Out anymore.
An early scene of Morgan scaring a perp with tough dialogue from movies reminded me of primo Smith. Other scenes not so much.
Listen, I'll say first off that if you don't like Tracy Morgan's humor, then you aren't going to like this movie at all. However, if you do like Tracy Morgan's humor (which I do) you will love this movie. I loved this movie for what it was, a silly cop action comedy. I don't understand how anyone could go into a movie with this cast and think that it was going to be anything Oscar worthy. If you like having a good time and don't want to have to think much, then this movie is absolutely worth it. If you're uptight and need movies to speak to you on a deeper level and love being a harsh critic, don't waste your time. A solid 5 stars.
'Crap' has so many different meanings. Dictionary.com offers 'nonsense;drivel' or 'refuse; rubbish; junk; litter'. Over to Wiktionary.org andyou'll find 'something of poor quality' or ' useless object'. Such aversatile word. What's most amazing is how Kevin Smith's latest effortfits every one of those definitions. In fact it seems to embrace andencapsulate those meanings as if it were a good thing; almost likeSmith expects this vapid buddy-cop movie to bring back so many memoriesof the good ol' days of Lethal Weapon or Tango and Cash that we'll justpretend this movie comes direct from the eighties and find it all themore endearing for it. We won't. Cop Out is, quite simply, crap. What makes those daggy odd-couple action flicks enjoyable is a fewthings: the set pieces are big, the jokes are funny and the leads sharean amusing chemistry. Cop Out manages zero from three. The gun-fightsare plodding and dull and none of the cast  with the exception ofWillis, but at 55 even he's losing it  are convincing as actionheroes. Meanwhile the gags in between fall flat due to a woefullywritten script and badly timed delivery, but the shonky editing anddreadful sound mixing don't help either. The fatuous screenplay by Robband Mark Cullen is laughable and makes Michael Bay's movies look likesomething Shakespeare wrote. Most disappointingly, the ragtag pairing of action icon Willis and thesupposedly humorous Morgan has about as much spark as a lighter withoutfuel. Morgan especially is unfunny as the shouting, swearing, spittingPaul; his Chris Rock on speed routine is downright annoying and willhave you wondering who in the world would find this man comical. Thesupporting cast give a slither of entertainment with Pollack andBrody's snooty coppers inducing the occasional smile and Scott's chattycrim eliciting a rare chuckle. The less we say about Guillermo Diaz'sderisory performance as a Latino gangster the better. All round garbage.1 out of 5 (1 - Rubbish, 2 - Ordinary, 3 - Good, 4 - Excellent, 5 -Classic)
I rented this movie tonight with the idea that it is a buddy copflick.Well that's what it is.It has single handledy brought back the80's and early 90's buddy cop movie back to the limelight. And theKicker was Kevin Smith Directed it Witch I did not know until the endcredits Brilliant. Kevin Smith is at his Best.I bet a lot of KevinSmith Fans would not even know He did it.The Plot is a littlepredictable but who cares its about the action and the one liners whichthis movie totally delivers.I am in no way a Bruce Willis fan but heWas as funny as hell and Tracy Morgan will always be Funny. But thereal Kicker in this movie is Seann Willlam Scott He is Funny as Hell asa Bumbling Wise cracking "Parrot". Please Rent.
[A] pitifully unfunny 'hommage' to '80s action comedies.
Tracy Morgan uses an anti-gay slur "fag" to get a laugh. It's notfunny. How would he like it if I said, "I'm not gonna shoot you,n-word." Did Tracy Morgan utter this line with joy in his heart? Iwonder what would allow an actor to be caught on film saying such ananti-gay slur and think it's okay by then subsequently stating themovie it's from. And Warner Brothers apparently thought this was a good idea to air thisportion of the movie in their television advertisements. And exactlyWHAT was going on in THEIR heads? Yeah. BOYCOTT this movie please.Tracy Morgan uses an anti-gay slur "fag" to get a laugh. It's notfunny. How would he like it if I said, "I'm not gonna shoot you,n-word." Kevin Smith may have needed a big Hollywood comedy right now, for a lot of reasons. What his old fans still need, though -- and in a hurry -- is a real Kevin Smith movie.
Great movie! I don't understand why everyone is hating on it I had a blast watching it plus i'm a huge kevin smith fan.
This review is from: Cop Out (DVD) Was pretty good but Tracy Morgan drove me nuts during a lot of it. Did get better as it went on or eles Morgan finally wore me down to liking his performance.
It could have been a match made in heaven. The snake in the garden is a tired script from Rob and Mark Cullen, which purports to "spoof" Eighties buddy movies (Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, etc) but lacks any real brain power of its own.
Seann William Scott provides some amusing moments as irrepressible thief Dave but they are few and far between.
I like buddy cop movies, that's why I wanted to see this one but it was so bad.Pretty boring and not very funny.I did like the scene where Tracy Morgan did that line from Robo Cop in the begining but that's about it.Sean William Scott wasn't that funny in this movie either.I thought he was annyoing.I bet Bruce Willis didn't like Tracy Morgan in real life, not just in the movie.Never will I see anthor movie with Tracy Morgan again. They should have paired Bruce Willis up with someone else.Don't even watch this movie for free!
Cop Out is a case study in how you can do everything right in theory and everything wrong in practice.
This review is from: Cop Out (Amazon Instant Video) It takes talent, courage, and a stronge belief in yourself to make a good movie. When you have none of these things, you just hide behind a lot of curse words and hope nobody will notice. This was the most offensive movie I have seen in my life. There was cursing every other word. No talent, no courage, and no belief in themselves. No movie.
Hmm, where to begin? Can we all agree that Kevin Smith's strongesttrait has always been his dialog? I'm not exactly his biggest fan, but I appreciate his distinct style.Smith's direction has never been his strong point, but he knows how towrite clever, post-Tarantino, crude dialog. It almost always works(let's forget Jersey Girl per his own instructions). The biggest problem with "Cop Out" is that it's the first time Smithhas directed someone else's script, and the script is *awful*. It'ssome of the worst dialog I've heard in a film through the past decade(and I watched all those terrible "Not Another..." movies).Smith's strength has never been directing, and I think even he wouldagree with that statement. His pacing is slack and indecisive; "CopOut" is almost two hours long and should have been about thirty minutesshorter.I'm a big fan of both Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, but both areunderplayed here. Willis, frankly, has never looked more stiff orbored; once in a while he turns in a gem of an actor's performance(think "Unbreakable"), but I've never seen him strain so hard to remaincredible as he did here.Tracy Morgan is terrifically funny in "30 Rock," but he's better insmaller doses. Smith gives him too much free reign here, and he justbecomes obnoxious. That really pains me to say, because I'm a fan ofhis and I've been waiting a while for him to achieve mainstreamsuccess, but this film plays to all his worst traits. It's a bummer towatch.Smith has absolutely no sense of direction whatsoever. When the badreviews began pouring in, he took to his Twitter to attempt to refutethem; he claimed that the critics didn't "understand" what he wastrying do.Hey, Kevin? Critics aren't that dumb, believe it or not. Right down tothe Harold Faltermeyer score, it's painfully obvious that he'sattempting to pay homage to the mixed-race buddy-comedies of the 1980s;problem is, "Cop Out" just plain sucks. It tries to parody the genrewhile simultaneously playing to it; imagine someone trying to mockLethal Weapon while, at the same time, creating a legitimate sequel. It's bad.Guillermo DÃaz is probably a really nice guy, but he's a terribleover-actor (and ruined every scene he appeared in for the last seasonof "Weeds"), and he only increased the distance from the film to itsaudience. Kevin Pollak and Adam Brody are given painfully awkward andunfunny sub-plots that amount to nothing.Want a good Tracy Morgan movie? Keep holding on and go watch repeats of"30 Rock" in the meanwhile. Want a good Bruce WIllis movie? Re-watchthe "Die Hard series." Want a good Kevin Pollak movie? Well...He's been in a lot of bad movies, hasn't he.The best element of the film is Sean William Scott's limited role. Andyou know what? The script lethargically discards him towards the end.His death isn't even funny -- it's just lazy.I've seen a lot of movies during my lifetime. Probably too many. (Youcan witness my IMDb commenting history for proof of that sad fact.) Ifound this film to be one of the most absolutely, awkwardly directedand edited mainstream films of all time. I don't even know how todescribe it...it's like the editor had no clue where to cut scenes. It's just bizarre to watch. It's amusing that, as of today, it's KevinSmith's most profitable domestic film ($36 mil and counting) -- butmoney has never been indicative of quality. Go watch "Clerks" or"Chasing Amy" again and if you feel an urge to watch a funnybuddy-comedy, watch "Midnight Run." And if you want to see Bruce Willisin one of his rare recently cool roles, go watch the music video forGorillaz' "Stylo." His performance there is roughly 96.7% better thanin "Cop Out," which is -- no pun intended, I guess? -- a total cop out.
Saw this film as the first part of a double feature with the far moreanticipated Shutter Island following, so my attention was only halfthere. That's about all the attention I needed, though, as it's atypical buddy cop movie through and through. Not that I expectedanything different, mind you.The whole reason I and likely 90% of the audience were there was forTracy Morgan. And it was a "classic" Tracy Morgan performance, by whichI mean he's his usual off-kilter self, some of his scenes work well andsome of them fall flat on their face in awkward silence.A 50% success rate is more than I can say for Bruce Willis, though, wholooked so disinterested I was half expecting him to break character atany moment and announce he had to leave the set because he had a planeto catch for another movie he was filming. The supporting cast of the underrated Sean William Scott and Jason Leewere their usually amusing selves, while the Latino gang villains, ledby Guillermo DÃaz of The Shield and Weeds fame, are absurdly over thetop and clichéd, almost to the point of offensiveness. It's a movie you'll probably see on cable while nursing a hangover onemorning, or something you watch on a plane because it's light and therearen't many better choices. Hard to recommend it past that.
It just wants to remind audiences of something they've enjoyed before, like looking at an old photo album.
There's a sad truth that the closer you get to satire the less peoplewill get the joke. Reading the reviews on here it's horribly painfulthat too many people took this seriously. This is supposed to be asatire on the comedy buddy cop scenario! Willis doesn't do too muchcomedy, painfully aware how much of a Hollywood audience is going to betoo slow to get the jokes. This is a decent Willis comedy role as perMoonlighting. It's not a great film. It's an interesting curio in thecareers of K Smith and B Willis. At times laugh out loud funny. Moreoften than not, a bit odd. Do yourselves a favour and stream a StewartLee routine ask yourself what really makes comedy?
