Its a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. excellent don't read the bad reviews

This Movie was very good. It served exactly what i was looking for-cowboys and aliens!! The people who are writing bad reviews are peoplewho went to the wrong movie, they should go to something like the pianoor some other move that's more serious! What were you expecting! Its afilm about the wild west and an alien race attacking them! It's anaction film, not a thinking film! People are complaining thateverything wasn't explained. Did it really matter?? It went from startto finish and it did it well. Look, if your looking for a film to justsit down and enjoy without looking into every little detail, then go toit. And if your unsure.. well look at the title.. cowboys and aliens!!!

Decent Movie, horrible product.

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) I should have known this is one of the "UV Digital Copy" packages. I HATE UV digital copies. It's server based and streaming, you have options do download but have to use Flixster. They did include an iTunes copy but it can't be transferred to either my iPad nor my iPhone, WHAT USE IS THAT???!!! I will never again buy any UV product, give me my digital copy as MY copy and not tied to a studio who can take it away any time they want. This UV thing is nothing but digital DIVX and needs to die and die fast.As a movie, it's a fairly fun popcorn flick. Wish I just bought the movie only copy. Buyer beware.

Predictable entertainment

The more I think about it, I think I'd rather have a pure Western usingthe same hangers - man without memory - seen. Then also place wouldhave been to the conflict that inevitably arises when you realize thatyou are one of the evil space found. C & A tries to accommodate perhapsa bit much. The man without memory, which is obtained from its past, the gentle bartender who has become a shooter needs, the boy who willbecome the man, the mysterious stranger, a mysterious stranger still, the ratio of Dolarhyde to son and foster son, the ratio Dolarhyde andJake ... and then even an alien invasion is thematically very much.Cowboys & Aliens Olivia Wilde Daniel Craig is over long distances as atough guy to beat me, which I did here lacked the depth of the script.I would like to learn more about the man Jake. Harrison Ford is good,if somewhat flat, which I put back on the screenplay. Clancy Brown asMeacham's great priest and died way too early in the film. Olivia Wildewould have earned more than eye candy as a writer Compliant take part. The film has no boring places, but with 123 minutes is too long to getCowboys & Aliens. The story could be told in 100 minutes as well. Thensome of the clichéd subplots could have believed it.If you take a deep breath through and pushes aside all expectations, offering Cowboys & Aliens 2 hours dense Wild West entertainment withextra fun by aliens.6,5 / 10 points

So odd that I liked it

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) It is a wonderfully odd idea that has been brought to the screen very effectively - everyone is quite deadpan - no winking at the camera. As a result, it worked for me. A mix of Western and Sci Fi cliches that just works as far as I am concerned. The aliens are appropriately terrifying, the cowboys appropriately brave, the Native Americans appropriately noble. And certainly enough surprises to make it entertaining throughout. Artfully takes the cliches and turns them into a unique and interesting film.

Just Say No to Ultraviolet

I was looking forward to buying this movie, but not after learning the digital copy was only distributed via ultraviolet. Another half baked solution to a problem that does not exist. Big content keeps making it more difficult to actually buy and enjoy content. I do not have a problem paying for content, but I am not going to pay for yet another half baked DRM solution that does not play well with my devices.

Not a Classic Yet....

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) (Amazon Instant Video) I have no problem mixing the Western & Alien genres, and I have no problem with the cast or acting in the film...but something is lacking. There are some slow spots and the action doesn't really pick up until towards the end, but there is some suspense albeit not much. I think Craig and Ford are fantastic in the roles they are assigned, but the film overall reminds me of how audiences viewed Predator when it first appeared in the 80's. The audience was kind of torn between "is is it sci-fi or is it action-adventure?" Of course in time we all grew to love the Predator franchise as a hybrid film. I think Cowboys and Aliens will be more appealing 10 years from now than it does present day, which in a way is a praise. It reminds me of a B movie on steroids and good B movies stand the test of time. If this becomes a cult classic we will have to wait and see, but I think it is setting a stage for future films to mix genres in a modern, appealing way.

What a combo

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) If you like westerns and sci fi, then you will love this movie. It was a great blend of the two and of course if you like Harrison Ford it is a must see

Such a FUN movie!

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) This movie is really different. I really liked it. The aliens are pretty cool. Love Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde. Lots of action and some great special effects.

A good time is what I expected from this movie and, thank heaven, a good time is precisely what I got.

In the year 2011, a picture like Jon Favreau's "Cowboys & Aliens" isboth a rush of excitement and a sigh of relief. Excitement because itis taut, pumped full of spectacle and adrenaline (and very exciting)and a relief because it comes in the third quarter of a year where alot of the movies have been either total duds or instantly forgettableswashbucklers. Admittedly, it is very nearly as silly as a lot of themovies I have dismissed in recent months (a la "Transformers: Dark ofthe Moon," "Red Riding Hood," "Green Lantern," "Season of the Witch")but it plays it intrinsically ludicrous elements to the hilt and yetstill produces a spectacle out of it.And let's face it, if there is a man in today's cinematic realm who canmake great spectacle on the screen, it is Jon Favreau, who recentlymade the two enormously commoving "Iron Man" pictures. Mr. Favreau hasproduced a very notable career in the past few years bringing comicbooks to the silver screen and he does that again here, this timeadapting Scott Mitchell Rosenburg's pulp tale. I am unfamiliar with theoriginal comic book, but the film is a wild mash-up of my two favoritegenres, the science-fiction spectacle and the Western. As it opens, anman (Daniel Craig) finds himself stranded in the middle of the Old Westwith a cauterized wound on his abdomen, an iron contraption strapped tohis wrist, and a mind plagued by amnesia. After tangling with somegritty swashbucklers in the middle of nowhere, he finds himself in adusty cow town run by - what else? - a wealthy cattle baron, played byHarrison Ford. When both Mr. Craig and Mr. Ford's character's son arejailed by the local sheriff, a group of extra-terrestrial warshipswreak havoc upon the town, in which Mr. Craig learns that the deviceattached to his arm is in fact an alien weapon. Several locals arecaptured by the alien warships and soon a posse of many mismatchedindividuals is formed and "Cowboys & Aliens" becomes a rowdy possepicture, with the baddies being slimy aliens instead of scruffy bankrobbers.Sure, "Cowboys & Aliens" is goofy, about as much as its silly titlewould lead you to believe. No offense meant to the comic book devotees, but how can you stage a story with gunslingers and aliens without someform of intrinsic lunacy? Mr. Favreau recognizes that and wisely, as hehas in the past, incorporates wonderful touches of comedy into his morerough, straight-mannered bursts of kinetic action. The movie's got thesame sort of dry humor as his "Iron Man" pictures and some of the samesupporting cast and the results are effective. It's a modern touch ofaction movies to go for laughs amidst rushes of violence, but here's amoment where I actually did chuckle or even laugh out loud. And as anaction picture, Mr. Favreau's talents do not disappoint or lag. Wiselymoderating his usage of wide shots and closer angles and almost alwayskeeping the camera moving (but not at a dizzying, out-of-focus speed),his combat scenes between the cowboys and aliens are dazzling in theirown way, even if they are very much the same thing over and over again.Exciting as it is, "Cowboys & Aliens" is hardly perfect. It isdramatically uneven, with its down-to-earth human elements hardly asenjoyable as the comic touches. I found it very hard to believe in manyof the dynamics between the characters. The plot also becomes, especially in regards to the character played by Olivia Wilde, a littletoo complicated, I think, for it's own good. But those are dismissibleflaws for a silly action spectacle like this. The only real nitpickthat I have about the picture is the lack of raw power in its villains. Thanks to the talents of the cast, the cowboys hold their own but thealiens are underwritten and not given enough attention to really holdtheir own. In addition, their computer generated imagery seems a littlequirky and unfinished. So what if it is not a masterpiece? I was not really expecting greatcharacter study from a movie based on a comic book called "Cowboys &Aliens." A good time is what I expected from this movie and, thankheaven, a good time is precisely what I got. In regards to the cast,Mr. Craig and Mr. Ford are their usual selves: charismatic and dominantover their scenes. Supporting parts are played quite well by SamRockwell as a nervous saloon keeper, Olivia Wilde as a mysterious girlin town, Paul Dano as the cattle baron's high-on-himself son, and NoanRinger (improving from his performance in "The Last Airbender") as thestereotypical lost little boy just wanting a father figure.Footnote for my fellow Western fans: keep an eye out for a familiar oldface, to be found in the very beginning.

"Aliens" Meets "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon", with a little "Independence Day" Thrown in...

I liked this movie. I think the people that didn't are either analyzingit too much or trying to be self important.I didn't like "Aliens", and generally don't go for those kind ofmovies, but found this one to be a good flick, despite some of theclichés.I watched it without trying to analyze it too much, and think thathelped. I know what some of the criticisms are and I agree, to a point. It's been said that Daniel Craig isn't the best "cowboy type" for thefilm, but to me that's the point. He wakes up in the middle of thedesert with a weird bracelet on. I think casting Craig for this rolekeeps you guessing. Is he one of the aliens in the title? You have towatch the whole thing almost to discover the answer through flashbacks.Craig plays a great western tough. As for Ford, I found his performance somewhat stiff, but frankly, he'salways that way and this is no "Regarding Henry" or "Witness". To me,Ford's performance in any of the "Indiana Jones" movies were no better. But they were fun, and that's the point. He's made better movies. Thatsaid, I like Harrison Ford and give him the benefit of the doubt. Hisis a supporting role.As for Olivia Wilde, you get the idea she's "not one of us" fairlyearly on, but it's just an inkling, you don't know for sure untillater. I'm really not that familiar with her. What is she supposed todo? She plays an alien in human form. They could have made her partmore interesting, but it's only a two hour flick. We rented the movie from Blockbuster, so I couldn't see the extendedversion, but I liked "Cowboys and Aliens" enough to want to buy theblu-ray in order to do that, so either that means I liked the movie orI'm stupid. Perhaps a little of both...

Cowboys and Aliens and it works?? Who would have thought!

When I first saw the trailer for this film I was very skeptical.I enjoy Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, and who doesn't like a good western... but ALIENS??It just seemed like too much or a bad mix of 2 over played genre's...Yet when I watched this film for the first time there were multiple emotions that came over me.First I felt like I was watching a great western like Tombstone. The story, the characters, scenes etc... all made me feel like i was in the old west taking part of the film. Then when the alien's were slowly brought into the mix I felt like I was seeing an epic such as Star Trek for the first time! The 2 so easily meshed together in a way that only a great director and producer could engineer...this is a MUST see for any history or Sci-Fi fanatic!

Nice

This movie in itself , while it does not portray anything new in terms of visual or sound effects as in most movies these days, it does tell a nice story. The story told here can be related to those kind of stories that you can here only from people who often claim that they were once abducted by aliens. Except that for Cowboys & Aliens, this stranger(Daniel Craig) who was abducted returned to earth with a metallic bracelet around his wristcompletely ripped off of his memory. To him has landed on a new soil, but to residents of this New Mexico territory, especially to Colonel Dalarhyde (Harrison Ford) this man is a robber who has to be punished. It only took a short while for the town to realize that their hero has arrived as aliens' planes begun to fly all over the town destroying everything in their path. Somewhere in between this battle, we have some themes as love, friendship, courage and unity taking their shapesCowboys and Aliens

Film is a well-acted Western with Aliens in it...not an alien invasion movie with cowboys in it/

I was pleasantly surprised with Cowboys and Aliens. After reading a fewcritics calling it "dull" and "lifeless" I was worried this would be aCGI riddled film where the action is so broad and large scale youbecome detached causing the dull reaction. I found it to be quite theopposite. Cowboys and Aliens is a "Western". People need to realizethis before viewing. This is not an alien invasion movie so much as itis a Westerm where the Aliens are a part of the story of the town ofAbsolution and its inhabitants. Readers of this are probably sayinghuh? If this movie were a weekly TV episode that focused on a towncalled Absolution and its characters such as Jake and the Colonel andtheir story...and one of the weekly episodes has aliens in it..this maybe a more accurate way to describe Cowboys and Aliens. I found it to beterrific. I imagine some of the disappointed reviewers went into thefilm expecting an alien invasion film that is set in the old west. Whenthey find out it focuses on the Western I think it will disappoint acertain demographic of viewers.Daniel Craig & Harrison Ford are terrific in opposing roles. Ford, asusual, is able to tap into the emotional part of the story and draw theviewer into his story of redemption. Craig does more compelling workwith his eyes than the wrist blaster and really impressed me. Withoutsaying too much look for the scene between Adam Beach, Harrison Ford, and the Indian Chief and tell me that isn't Ford at his best since "AirForce One". The CGI is used right without overkill, the action is keptin perspective, and the cinematography is absolutely gorgeous. If you are looking for an adult Western with some terrific actionsprinkled around a character driven script go see this film. It won'tleave you disappointed.

Trust Favreau to make an enjoyable movie

Heard the title months ago and wrote it off as "boring". Then heard Favreau was attached to it and thought it might be interesting. Finally saw it and was super positively surprised. The story is a bit out there but sci-fi and westerns are my cup of tea so I loved it. The cast was great, and some of the supporting cast really made the character storylines enjoyable because you just immediately were rooting for them.Great action, lots of gore type scenes which may freak out under 12 kids. There is some character development that happens early on that requires dialogue but I did not get bored at all.Bottom line, this movie sucked me in and kept my attention throughout. Fun, loud, action and all put together well by one of my favorite storytellers. Had a great time!

(2012-05-19 00:38)

Just plain ridiculous

Love Westerns; Love Syfi; Love Daniel Craig; Love Olivia Wilde; Still like Harrison Ford. Mix them all together and you have...'a mess' in my opinion, and hard to believe it ever got made. I watched the extras/behind the scenes shorts first and knew it was a stinker by the way the Actors were trying so hard to convince themselves this was going to be a great film--not! It could have been a decent Western (tell me Daniel Craig isn't Steve McQueen reincarnated) or fairly good 'Aliens are here to kill us movie', but in combo it totally didn't work for me. I only watched it all the way thru cause I pd $20 for it new from Target, but I'll never watch it again!

cookiechip_07 (2012-05-17 20:38)

A well directed genre mash-up

Cowboys & Aliens better than what the name suggests and when youreplace the & with Vs you basically have the plot of the movie.Although that is a rather simple summary because included in the mixare Apaches, a faithful fear sensing dog, a young whippersnapper, asymbolic hummingbird, a magic bracelet and a beautiful young woman whoactually looks like she could the product of a cowboy-alien! I praise Jon Favreau for an ambitious story, of trying to bring thewestern into the 21st century and trying to appeal to a mass audienceof young and old. Considering all this, he hasn't actually done a badjob and the film is, in a word, good. This is because when attemptingto cross genres like this it is always such a difficult task, theaudience are usually not so keen and often unsure of how to react withsuch unfamiliar categories much like, but to a lesser degree, comedyhorrors. Here, the film is balanced in that respect and made to feelquite plausible that in 1873, modern aliens in spacecrafts can battleagainst the bow and arrows of Indians and the pistols and whips ofcowboys. All the mis-en-scene is thoroughly thought out and the aliens /spacecrafts wouldn't be out of place in one of Jon Favreau's Iron Manmovies they are that nicely designed. The cast has been well chosen andthe acting from just about everyone is solid. One problem I have is, the aliens are made to be not as intelligent ashumans yet if this where the case, the humans in this movie would beflying around in aircrafts and modern technology not the aliens so thatis a little disappointing. Another problem with this film is I believe, had it entirely been a cowboy western it probably would have been a farbetter film. I found the best aspects throughout were actually the'cowboy' moments and that the opening scene was full of suspense andtension, more so then when the aliens arrived. On the other hand, it'salso quite possible that had it totally been a sci-fi alien film thatwould have been far more appealing and interesting for many.As we have it, the western is a dying genre for mass audienceattendance and so we have been given this mix up. Cowboys and Aliensare a non-alcoholic cocktail if you will, nice, refreshing but lack ofpunch. An enjoyable movie that I guess families will be the ones whowill benefit mostly from.

Great movie, other than one problem.

I will admit I walked into this movie more than skeptical. Theportrayal of a clash of two such admired and exalted genres (Westernand Science Fiction) would be a difficult feat to accomplish, that wasobvious. Nevertheless, Jon Favreau, I felt, did an excellent job. Theaction was stunning and intense, and the humor was enjoyable, to saythe least. I also felt that the filmmakers were successful in avoidingquite a few of the clichés that would be expected to crop up in a movietitled "Cowboys & Aliens."Despite my general and extreme satisfaction with the film, however, there was one thing in the movie which I found fairly distracting andmore than disagreeable. This was the fact that Olivia Wilde's characterturned out to be an alien. It didn't add to the story at all, and aftershe regenerated, her character became somewhat corny. Perhaps thefilmmakers were trying to enhance the romance in the story, or maybethey realized they needed somebody who understood alien technology todestroy the ship at the end. Whatever they were thinking, Wilde'scharacter, in my opinion, should have remained human and deceased. Asis, her character isn't crucial to the story, and would have made moreof an impact as a corpse.Fortunately, though, the rest of the movie was so thoroughly amusingand entertaining that I found it relatively easy to get past Wilde'scharacter after her regeneration and enjoy the film. "Cowboys andAliens" had all the essentials of a great film: action, drama, comedy, and romance. If you get the chance, I highly recommend seeing it. It'sdefinitely worth your time.

personally thought it was a very fun and entertaining film

cowboys and aliens is a very good film, not GREAT....but very good. itsthe first of its kind, so remember that when you watch it, and judgeit. as far as directing goes, not too bad for Stavreau's first directedfilm. (or however you spell his name. there are a couple of boringparts in it that i think could have been spruced up with a little bitof camera angle movement, maybe some hand-held stuff. but, still, a jobwell done.the acting is superb, without a doubt. To me, anything with HarrisonFord and Daniel Craig is guaranteed to be interesting....and OliviaWilde's insane hotness makes it all the more better :)the plot has loopholes, and a few other nicks in the film altogether.the special effects were very well done, along with all the animationand original creature design.overall, 8/10.....pretty damn good for Jon's first directingexperience.

James bond and Indy

I don't understand movie goers anymore.Everybody has been sayingcowboys and aliens is stupid in a society that thinks transformerstrilogy is good thats uncalled for.Cowboys and aliens was actually afun B-movie.I was real hestitate but I found myself having fun withit.Like c'Mon cowboys and aliens, this is not an art-house seriousdramatic movie. The movie stars Harrison ford and Daniel Craig what elsewere you expecting. This movie has some flaws but still pulls itthrough.I thought the mix of the western genre and scifi genre wasactually a brilliant idea. The action in this movie was fun and over thetop extravaganza. The special effects are slick and somewhatoriginal. This movie is just a nice fun retreat movie.
