| Storyline | In New York City, a case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couples attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous. |
I wonder how many married couples out there can attest to theirlifestyle being nothing but revolving around work, family andespecially kids, with the latter just sapping whatever free time theyhave in their waking hours, only to find themselves stuck in awash-rinse-repeat cycle. The film examines in a comical fashion ofcourse, the lifestyle of the typical family with working parents andyoung children, and how there isn't anything known as personal time, and having routine becoming the rot in their lives. For the Fosters Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey), such istheir married life, with spontaneity and energy being sucked so dry, even their regular date nights seem like a chore. You know, thatprecious night where you think you can paint the town red with ababysitter looking after the kids, and the sad thing being that eventhat can turn out to be lifeless, save for their favourite game playedduring dinner, where they adlib what they think about other dinersaround them.Which is pretty cool, given that the two comedians, as the blooper reelplayed during the end credits showed, hammed it up a lot with awesomead-libbing and improvisation, that never fail to bring on the laughter. In fact, opportunities where they are cut loose and allowed to goreally crazy, are some of the best parts of the film, breathing comediclife into a very simple story of how their, well, little white lie inorder to get a table at a swanky restaurant, would turn their datenight upside down into a crazy urban adventure, filled with thugs, cops, and well, a beefy Mark Wahlberg. If I had a physique similar to Wahlberg's security expert Holbrooke, heck I'll strut around topless as well all the time, which serves as arunning joke about Man's insecurities about the pectorals and abs ofanother. One of the nicer themes here involves how couples, besidespending time together, have to emotionally connect and be honest andupfront about their desires, and especially fears as well. In betweenpursuits and comedy, director Shawn Levy pauses the pace appropriatelyto inject some dramatic elements to sneak in a moment or two to examinejust that, before stepping on the pedal to floor the film to itsfinale.Like I mentioned, it's otherwise a very straightforward film thatdoesn't try to be more than it can be, keeping things simple and to thepoint, with great cameo appearances with the likes of Will.I.Am, MarkRuffalo, James Franco and Mila Kunis being those instantlyrecognizable. Carell and Fey share an excellent chemistry and play offeach other's antics really well from wit to the timing of theirphysical comedy, and you'll find yourself rooting for this average, normal couple, to be going one up against their adversaries in a singlenighttime adventure, since all they want is to get out of theirpredicament, and back to their home and children like all parents do.Stay until the end of the credits if you didn't have enough of therestaurant scene where Carell and Fey pose as arrogant Euro-trash, foradditional laughs.
Date Night in some ways falls victim to the comedy trailer fiasco whereso much of the great moments and jokes are spoiled in the trailers. However, it does overcome this because those same scenes are stillhilarious and the way the story pulls it all together, its a riproaring, roll in the aisles, fun comedy with sweet overtones and a hintof real romance in tact. I actually wondered when I first saw thetrailers whether stars Tina Fey, and Steve Carell would have goodchemistry, they seem as different as night and day but much to mysurprise and pleasure they were absolutely brilliant together. Thecomedy in this film is excellent, and while it likely would never turncritics' heads it will most certainly be one of those comedies thatanyone can watch again and again and just simply enjoy it. It hasadventure, intrigue, action, comedy, romance and everything else tomake a movie goer who loves a certain genre enjoy the film for whateverreason. Surprisingly writer Josh Klausner doesn't have a lot ofexperience behind him with the exception of part of the Shrek seriesbut this should absolutely help prove his writing chops. Two of the best comedy minds in show business today come together forthe chance to simply have fun. Steve Carell is one of the mostversatile comedians and if he's not already nearly there he willabsolutely sit with the comedic greats like Steve Martin, and RobinWilliams who deliver comedy with intensity but also versatile enough todo romance and drama as well. Carell has this likable loser qualitythat he tends to use to the fullest but it works for him. Tina Fey isso talented in writing, acting and producing and certainly knowscomedy. It turns out her and Carell are really terrific together. Shedelivers comedy with absolute perfect timing. Mark Wahlberg puts insome time in a small role but still very funny. He is terrific as aformer client of Fey and mysterious secret agent. Other supportingcharacters who truly add substantial class and comedy to film includeJames Franco, Mila Kunis, Jimmi Simpson, and William Fichtner. Director Shawn Levy is the perfect match for this cast and this film. His other work includes some (in my opinion) real comedy classics andalso fitting of this same genre. I think when he works with greattalent (like Steve Martin in The Pink Panther, and Cheaper By The Dozenor Ben Stiller in Night at The Museum) he lets them be what makes themgreat and simply moves the story in the right direction. There is nocomplicated twists, or outrageous antics per se but is simply funthrough and through. If you're looking for a good time, you want tolaugh and smile, and it truly is the perfect date movie for Date Nightyou won't be disappointed. Check this one out!! 8/10
Steve Carrell has over-leveraged and over-extended his modest comedicskills far beyond their limits, and as a result his comedic value hascollapsed like the real estate bubble.Tina Fey is a great comedic writer but she doesn't have much range as aperformer.Neither of these flaws would be fatal if this film had a decent script, but of course it doesn't.This is a comedy without jokes, without witty lines, and withoutprotagonists for whom we care. The central plot is so implausible thatwe cannot identify with it, nor is sufficiently absurd or satiric so asto be interesting. My wife and I made it through 45 minutes of this before unanimouslyvoting to turn it off. Save yourself 45 minutes and don't rent thisone.
This review is from: Date Night (DVD) This was a great movie. Any of you married with kids will definitely enjoy this. I laughed non-stop. Steve and Tina were great together!
As I'm not jaundiced about Hollywood slapstick films, nevertheless theonly thing I couldn't bare is the vulgar taste of humor, but SteveCarell could be an exception, I do enjoy THE 40- YEAR-OLD VIRGIN(2005), which maybe Judd Apatow should take the credit. Compared withother A-List comedy actors, Will Farrell, Seth Rogan, Ben Stiller andVince Vaughn, Steve stands out easily for me. As for Tina Fey, this isher first film I saw (I have not watched 30 ROCKS because I choose toeschew from Alec Baldwin), her poker face performance is smart, but Iam not sure if she should stick to her more promising career as awriter instead of a decent actress since the chemistry between twoleads are not so sparkling. So many surprising big names here like Meester, Franco & Kunis, Ruffalo& Wiig in their cameo roles and Marky Mark is naked in all his scenes, but I have to say, dude, you still look like a monkey, maybe this timeis an ape, seriously shirt on! (no offense to all Marky's fans, oops!)The story is perfunctory with many plot holes (one example, how and whyon earth the real Tripplehorns want to book a table in an expensiverestaurant as it seems to me that they are not able to afford it), andI have not expected too much from director Shawn Levy (NIGHT AT THEMUSEUM 1&2 ). However I am quite amused by the set piece ofhead-to-head-connected car chase and the pole dancing scenes in theclub, call me desperate to give it a 6/10, nowadays a genuine comedy isso hard to find.At least the positive message spread from the film itself is appealingto almost everyone, the roommate theory does sound believable and noone can deny that as a couple for a long time, which can consume allthe passions, it's sad but true, a tonguing kiss with physical devotionbecomes so rare to appreciate.

[...]Special Features:Directing 301 with Shawn Levy is a segment over twenty minutes long shot in a fun way that introduces the crew of the film with title screens like comic book characters showing how all the members work together to get the film done. It's a fun, fast look at the process including the flipped schedule of everyone working all night and sleeping all day. Shawn Levy also does a "Directing Off Camera" quick clip about how certain sequences he keeps the film rolling while yelling commands that are edited out in post production like in the dancing scene. The Date Night PSAs are three quick clips from Steve Carell and Tina Fey about losing that spark in relationships. The Gag Reel appears to be the same one at the end of the credits because I did not see a separate feature for this. There is also supposed to be audio commentary from the director on the DVD version, but I could not find this feature under special features or set up so I do not know WHERE it is hiding. Basically there isn't a ton in the way of features on the DVD so if you really want the full extra experience you'll want to pick up the Blu-Ray that comes with a Digital copy, deleted scenes, camera tests, and disaster dates with the cast.
I found Date Night to be the most exciting and funniest show that I have seen in a very long time. There are times of terror and danger but overall it is a really good comedy that you will enjoy watching and walk away talking and laughing about a most delightful show.
DATE NIGHT is an adequate comedy with exactly three high points, aboutmarried couple Phil and Claire (Steve Carell and Tina Fey) in a rut;unrewarding jobs, three kids, no sex. On one of their regular DateNights, they raunch it up a little by going into the city of Manhattanfor dinner; at a hip restaurant, they claim another couple's table, feeling it's the craziest thing they've done. But the night has justbegun... Through a series of mixups, the couple gets involved with crooked cops, pervert attorneys, car chases, robberies, mobsters... and Marky Markwith his shirt off. I didn't forget you, my squealing piggies - the three high points ofthe movie: 1) A unique car chase with two cars stuck to each others'front ends. 2) James Franco and Mila Kunis as a trash-talking trashcouple. 3) Marky Mark with his shirt off.Directed by Shawn Levy (NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM), written by Josh Klausner, action and dialog is generally good, but is defiantly raised wheneverthe cameos arrive: Ray Liotta as a mobster (big stretch), Mark Ruffaloas a dissatisfied husband (somewhat tautologous), William Fichtner asthe pervert attorney. Steve Carell brings the Everyman with the nasal personality, Tiny Feybrings the gorgeous, Common brings the gangsta, James Franco brings themeaningful tatts, Mila Kunis brings the devoted beeatch, Mark Wahlbergbrings The Shatner and does his whole role shirtless and body-oiled. Byfar the funniest part of the movie. Drink him in. Later, when talking about how Claire "lit up" when confronted withMarky Mark With His Shirt Off, Phil complains, "...And why do you needmuscles on your shoulders like that?" There is a touching moment in thecar, where Claire complains she can't "light up" for Phil that waybecause her day is so traumatically busy - and he doesn't argue, butcomes to her rescue, "I'm not saying your day isn't hard work, butthere's someone there to help you with the burden - me." It's a peekinto the heart of men that most women usually steamroll over with talktalk talk about me me me. Take note, ladies. If you are there for us,we are there for you...Resume chase movie. Pause on Marky Mark With His Shirt Off...
Date Night is sort of a modern day retelling of Martin Scorsese's 1985film After Hours, but instead of a single guy having misadventuresduring a wild night in New York, it's a married couple. It's rare thata movie these days makes me laugh out loud but this one delivered.Steve Carell and Tina Fey are perfectly cast as the Fosters, a boredhusband and wife from New Jersey who has the time of their livesgetting into as much trouble as humanly possible after being thevictims of a case of mistaken identity. With a supporting castincluding Mark Wahlberg, Ray Liotta and Mark Ruffalo, this slapstickromance can barely go wrong. Although the plot is more contrived andHollywoodish than After Hours was, the laughs are plentiful andwatching Date Night is simply a good time to be had.
Comedies of this kind is depending on one thing. Their actors. SinceHollywood learned the genre in the 30s, the basics have been aboutbeing down to earth. It's funnier that way. Here we meet the oh so typical, oh so funny and oh so boring New Jerseycouple, which during their weekly night out without the children, forunlucky reasons is taken for somebodys who has taken something from themob. And some parts of New York is destroyed because of this.Maybe that's the reason why it doesn't really function. You shouldn'tbe overacting, which they aren't, but you shouldn't neither beoverscripting. That's perhaps the case here, unfortunately.
Based on other reviewers I lowered my expectations about the level of laughs with this movie, but the reviews still led me to believe it was still a fairly non-stop funny movie. There were some very funny parts, but far more seriousness than I expected. It was actually more of a "tense at times action, on the run, how are we ever going to get out of this" movie, with some funny parts here and there. Much of the humor was subtle - the kind that makes you sort of smile a bit. Also parts of the movie did move a bit slowly. We really appreciate that it had a great message for married couples, and these days that's rare. As the performers go, Tina Fey and Steve Carell had magic chemistry. You'd swear they were married and they seemed so perfectly matched. They had fantastic timing, and played off each other really well. I'd recommend this movie, especially for couples, but have the proper expectations and you're more likely to end up satisfied.
Date Night was a good date movie. Yeah corny over used line I know butit fits this kind of movie. I watched this with, oddly enough, my wife(tried to borrow someone else's wife badum-ching, just kidding honey). That's the kind of movie this is, bringing out the dry humor that fitsohh so many married couples. Anyway both my wife and I enjoyed themovie ... see it for yourself. Now if you are single, divorced orrecently married this movie will be boring and predictable. (just likemy marriage badum-ching whoa I am on fire) The movie is well written, almost too well written, moving at a perfectly smooth pace. There areplenty of quick jokes that married people will appreciate. They evenfound a way to include Hot Cars, Gunshots and a Car Chase in New York. But seriously at the end of this movie you will appreciate your long, stable relationship like a pair of slippers that fit you just right.Casting was perfect: Carell does a great job of playing the averagehusband with the occasional outburst that has made him famous in 40yrold Virgin and Evan Almighty. I love watching Tina Fey in her 'I justwant a normal life' role that made her famous in Mean Girls and BabyMama. So it is a good movie for a date, of course you will have towatch matinée so that it finishes in time to go pick up the kids fromschool or else you have to wait until it hits the movie rental becauseyou can not find a sitter you trust.
I have been looking forward to Date Night because it seems like everyromantic comedy we have stars the little youngsters that are so lameand don't provide any laughs. Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are absolutelyhilarious and two of the best comedic actors in the business today. Somy boyfriend and I finally checked the movie out today at the theaterand had an absolute blast. It's good that we finally got a funnyromantic comedy, most are so cheesy and have lame jokes, but we got agood couple with chemistry and made the movie work so well. The storycould have been a total joke, but again because of the actors you couldtell how much fun they had making this and that makes it even moreenjoyable for the audience. While the story still has a couple offlaws, I really had a good time watching Date Night.Phil and Claire Foster are a married couple with two children whosedomestic life has become routine. They have a weekly "date night" at alocal steakhouse followed by a movie, but it is just as routine aseverything else in their marriage. To reignite romance, Phil takesClaire to a trendy Manhattan restaurant, but they can't get a table.Phil decides to take a reservation from a no-show couple. Halfwaythrough their meal, they are approached by two men, who question themabout a flash drive they believe Phil and Claire stole from mobsterboss Joe Miletto. Phil and Claire try to explain that they are not thecouple they're after, but the two men threaten them at gunpoint. Theyescape and go to the police station, Phil and Claire talk withDetective Arroyo but discover that the two dangerous men are alsodetectives, presumably on Miletto's payroll. Realizing they can't trustthe police, they decide to find the real "Tripplehorns", the couplethey stole the reservation from and try to figure all this out beforetheir night of evening and romance turns into them having cementbooties and swimming with the fishies.Date Night was definitely worth the watch, but I would recommend itmore for a rental. Most romantic comedies are that way, no big specialeffects or break through performances. But Tina and Steve are awesometogether. One of my favorite scenes that I'm sure you'll get a kick outtoo, Phil and Claire steal on of their friend's cars and goes into ahuge car chase and accidentally crashes into a taxi. The cars get stuckon each other and as they have this huge car chase they have to drivewhile being stuck together, the taxi driver's reaction was absolutelyhilarious. There are bloopers at the end were also a bonus as youwonder how some of the actors can keep a straight face during thesefunny scenes. The only flaw being that it was a bit predictable andthere was one scene that kept going to the point where it gotuncomfortable, Phil and Claire have a scene where they're dancing on astripper pole and at first it's funny, but it does go on a little toolong. But they're forgivable flaws and I would recommend Date Night, itwas very funny and an absolute pleasure to watch, I hope Fey andCarrell do more work together, they are awesome.7/10
If you are looking for fun with formula mistaken identity then you will not be disappointed. Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) Foster have standard date nights to keep their marriage fresh. After an encounter with another couple that plan to break up, The Fosters decide to do something unique for Date Night. In desperation to eat at a posh New York restaurant they claim they are the missing Tripplehorn party. I will not go into details but soon the Fosters must use skills they did not know they had to survive the night. Of course there is the obligatory car chase but like a Dave Barry farce it starts out reasonable true to life and ends up off the grid. You will find yourself kibitzing or stunned with amazement.
Steve Carell and Tina Fey are two of the most appealing actors working today, and the thought of them working together sounds great. For the most part, this film is a comedy of errors, stemming from Steve Carrell's character's decision to take the table of "The Tripplehorns" at a restaurant, only to discover two approaching men, who question Phil and Claire (Steve Carrell and Tina Fey) about a flash drive they believe Phil and Claire stole from mobster boss Joe Miletto (Ray Liotta). The script is completely average; there is nothing offensive or objectionable, but there is nothing really original or outstanding, either. What is enjoyable in the film, however, is the performances from Steve Carrell and Tina Fey. In short, the actors are better than the material. For fans of these actors, this film is recommended.
I was expecting better from Steve Carroll and Tina Fey, but for me,this movie just didn't deliver. There wasn't anything that made melaugh out loud. Some scenes were amusing. Carroll and Fey play amarried couple that take the reservation of another couple at a fancyrestaurant. It turns out the the other couple stole a flash drive fromsome gangster and he's hired two goons to get it back, and the goonshappen to be cops. So, these cops take Carroll and Fey and threatenthem. They escape and hunt down a friend played by Mark Wahlberg.Wahlberg had the best scenes, as he stands there shirtless whileeveryone seems to make comments about it. The 2 track down the disk andwant to return it. They are still being chased by the bad cops and thegood cops and have to do a semi-stripper dance at the end.FINAL VERDICT: not good enough to recommend.
Pros: I freaking LOVE Steve Carrel and Tina Fey! Carrel is a totalbad-ass in The Office, and Fey is a total bad-ass in 30 Rock  2 of myabsolute favorite TV shows!!! Having these two as the leads was a dreamcome true. They're comedic geniuses. The movie was funny, but I onlywish Tina Fey would have written it because it probably would've been10 times funnier. The characters were funny, the story wasstraightforward but consisted of quite a fun bunch of characters, especially that District Attorney, who was kinda a sexual freak!Hahaha.Cons: I only wish the movie could have maybe up-ed the genre and pushedthe limit a bit more. It could've been better, done something maybenew, and kept me guessing more, but I didn't mind all of this too muchbecause the entire movie kept me entertained.
Derivative nonsense....not one laugh and a total waste of the talentinvolved. Beneath these great comic actors...It is billed as comedy butthey try too hard. Steve Correll does his level best but can only workwith what he is given. I LOVE Tina Fey, but once again she didn't writeit.a total bore... Ray Liottta is invisible. Glad they didn't make iton my dime.Love Mark Wahlbergs body though. Strangely enough Steve andTina have no chemistry....neither does any one else in this drivel. Iam not that picky but this was a total yawn. Could have been somethingrather funny but it turned out to be something less interesting than"Mr. and Mrs. Smith"...and that wasn't really supposed to be funny.
I'll never understand why these two funny people opted to be in this contrived movie.
I have read so many "great reviews" of this film from the "top reviewers" from USA Today, Rolling Stone...etc... My question is "What type of substance was in your system when you saw the film?" It has to be THE WORST film of this year! We turned off the video after about 30 minutes. The jokes were "non-jokes" delivered with no sense of effective comedic acting. The main characters were excruciating (including the youngsters). The editing was so choppy, it was difficult to sense any natural flow to the scenes. The background music had little connection to the action and sounded like a retread of ominous tones of a "24" clone. The positive reviews would seem to be a reflection of how reviewers have either become so taken with the so-called star power of the leads (based upon TV work)or have been "bought" by the production companies that churn out this drivel. Granted, there are not many good comedies out there. But, give me a break. I cannot believe that the reviewers actually laughed at any of this. Unfortunately, the laugh is on the consumer.
