The worlds greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes. DVD Quality PC, Mac, PS3 and XBOX 360 COMPATIBLE |
This is the kind of kid's movie that adults will love too. Plenty of slapstick and potty humor for the kids, and lots of jokes that will go right over their heads for the adults. I took my 5 year old nephew to see this. He's easily frightened, so I was a little worried. (I had just taken him to Toy Story 3, where he had a meltdown when he thought the toys were going to be melted in the incinerator, and I mean hysterical crying, covering his eyes, and crawling on my lap. Which also happened at the end of that movie when the boy gave all his toys away. And my sister-in-law told me that for weeks afterward he had nightmares about growing up and losing all his toys. I'm surprised they let me take him to the movies again at all!) But I was pleasantly surprised. A few tense moments, but nothing really scary. The scene that upset him the most is when the guy didn't show up for the girl's recital. (Did I mention that he's sensitive?) I also appreciated the length of the movie. There is only so long kids can sit still. I don't know why they make any kid's movies longer than 90 minutes. Basically, my 5 year old nephew loved it, and his 35 year old aunt loved it as well. Doesn't get much better than that.
Despicable Me is a film that is aimed for kids under 10, and indeedgets there. Unfortunately, it only gets there. If you're over 10, thenyou won't be into it. There's just too many fart and booger jokes andnot enough sophisticated humor for adults or even teenagers likemyself. Sure, I laughed once or twice and felt some emotion once ortwice but you can't depend on one or two laughs and one or twoemotional scenes to sustain a whole movie, especially at $10 a ticket.Steve Carrell's funny voice got annoying after a while, but the minionsare funny. I mean this film had a lot of potential. This could havebeen something bloody brilliant and just plain great, but there'ssimply not enough of that here. The little girls are somewhat of anannoyance and get in the middle of an interesting story of a supervillain. The characters are (mostly) 1-Dimensional and rather than nottrying enough like most movies, this movie tries too hard and ends upstuffing too much into its own film and becomes the victim of its ownclever game. Overall, I can't recommend Despicable Me, it's toooverstuffed and boring. There are better kids movies out there for yourkids to see, so skip this one and go see Toy Story 3 again.
Very cute and sweet movie. As the main villain warms up and finallydiscovers that he doesn't need to be bad in order to have a heart. Andthree girls help him develop that.A villain named Gru(Steve Carell voicing him) is wanting to be the topvillain. And is threatened by newcomer Vector aka Victor(voice by JasonSegal). As Gru wants to stop Vector from getting the moon. But he seesthe three girls from the orphanage as a way to take the moon. Seeingthem donating cookies to help their orphanage. Which is run by a verymean woman, who is much more worse than the two villains combined. At first, the girls and Gru don't hit it off as he comes to "adopt"them thanks, to the help of the scene-stealing minions. But they allfour learn to get along. To the point where he falls in love with them. But his scientist friend(voiced by Russell Brand) sees them as adistraction to take over the moon. And has them sent back to theorphanage where they came from, which breaks Gru's heart. On top ofthat, he feels he has never gotten the respect from his mom(voiced byJulie Andrews). Now Gru has a lot on his place, trying to "steal" the moon, whilehoping to get the girls back. Will he do both and plus, gain therespect of his mom as he has tried over and over again! The girls andthe cuddly, friendly yellow-shaped minions steal the movie. As Carellis funny but plays the straight man in the movie. But in a good kind ofway. Really cute film that does have a heart. Shows you that you don'thave to do anything big in order to win approval! Go take the kids andsee it.BTW for the record, didn't see it in 3-D as the theater that I saw itin, didn't have that!
Absolutely loved it! I took my 5 year old daughter and my 13 year old son. We all thought it was very funny with a great storyline! It had been a while since I laughed at a children's movie but this one had me laughing out loud!! The perfect balance of entertainment for adults and kids! When it was over I definitely wanted to see it again ASAP and I have not wanted to do that since I was a teenager watching Grease for the first time! : ) I will definitely buy this for my family when it comes out on DVD!!!
I went in knowing that this would possibly be the animated movie of the summer, and I was NOT let down. The story itself was cute. But the characters! The characters came alive. I loved Gru, I loved Vector! Vector could have a spin off movie and I would pay to see that too. I saw it in 3D and it was absolutely awesome, better I thought that Toy Story 3... or just about any 3D movie lately... it wasn't Avatar awesome, but it was Up awesome...Know what I mean? :)
I got early screening passes to go see this with my family tonight, andwent well out of our way to go see it. I must say it was absolutelyworth it. Funniest movie I have seen in a long time. It's great forkids and adults it has such a great humor that everyone laughed. Thewhole theater was laughing for an hour and half! Definitely see it in3D though. And normally I don't care for 3D, cause it's kinda blurryand weird, but this movie's 3D effects were really well done!Oh andremember to stay and watch the credits, the Minions do some really coolstuff, where they come out of the screen. WELL WORTH YOUR MONEY! Goingon my list of favorite movies. ^.^
While I agree with the rating, I'm sure I got there via other means. Ihave to ask if this is a fair rating of the movie, or if this filmgarnered a 7.8/10 due to flaccid choices at the box office? Either way, this is a deserving summer sleeper hit, which will find its way into mycollection.Morals and life's lessons set aside, the movie is fun, witty, sweet, amusing, and entertains while still managing to maintain a coherentstory. The lessons are pretty standard, the morals are slippery, andthe animation is pretty decent, but the overall effect is greater thanthe individual components. No slick production style, just cute, cute, cute, which would normally have me hurling into the nearest trashreceptacle but herein, it works. We actually laughed through 90% of this film, which is pretty amazingfor us.Loved it.It rates a 7.7/10 from...the Fiend :.
I've seen this advertised but didn't figure I would care for it, being an adult with grown kids and such. Well, my daughter got this for me as a Christmas gift, and that evening we all watched it together. The 3D effects are as good as you see in any theater these days, but the jist of it all is that I laughed nearly the entire length of the movie. IMHO, the movie does what it is supposed to do, transport us for a couple of hours and entertain. It still may not be for everyone, but it does appeal to a broad audience. If you have kids, you can relate to it. If you are a kid, you can relate as well. I was pleasantly suprised, and laughed until I cried. Reminded me of some of the "old" cartoons I watched as a kid.
This review is from: Despicable Me (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) A sweet story about what the power of love can accomplish. Funny and silly with just the right touch of tenderness makes a wonderful family movie.
I'll be honest- while the commercial spots were pretty cute at first, I grew just as tired of them as most of the other people out there when they played for the millionth time. Even so, I was pretty curious- could this film live up to expectations? And what of the 3-D aspects & the child friendly aspects? More importantly... will the parents wish for a freeze ray to aim at themselves? Steve Carell plays Gru, a supervillain who is determined to make it big. Unfortunately he's hampered by two things: one is the new supervillian Vector who foils Gru at every turn & the other is that in order to undertake his latest venture, Gru must get a loan... which he's almost immediately denied for. Gru attempts to steal a shrink ray to prove to the bank that he's no slouch, but just as it is in his grasp it is stolen by the geeky Vector. Finding no way into Vector's not so secret hideout, Gru decides to sneak his way in via three adorable little girls that he adopts with the intention of discarding once his plan is finished. What he doesn't plan on is actually falling for them. I screened this to see if my niece would enjoy it (ok, I admit it- I was curious) & I was happy to find that the movie is actually pretty cute. The animation is nicely done & I liked Gru's interactions with the kids. Agnes has to be one of my favorite animation kids since watching Boo in Monsters Inc. Who wouldn't giggle at a little girl who mistakes cheese puffs for caterpillars & manages to dye a ferocious dog pink? The story moves along nicely & there's even a little bit of adult humor in there. (If you watch closely there's a little dig at Lehman Brothers early on in the film.) The 3-D is also nicely done- it manages to put in enough cool gimmicks to look impressive, but without overly sacrificing credibility. (Any sight gimmicks are done as part of the plot.) It isn't quite up to par with how Avatar's 3-D was, but let's face it- those are some hard shoes to fill 3-D wise. However where the movie falls short is via the voice talent. Everyone does a decent job, but I can't help but feel like Carell was overdoing it a little with his fake Russian accent & I would have liked to have seen more Kristen Wiig. OK, not exactly a voice talent issue but she was woefully underused in this film. Plus I'm a bit miffed that you basically see most of the best parts of the movie via the commercials & video clips on the web. (Although it might be a good thing- I can watch the "IT'S SO FLUFFY!!!" scene again without shelling out the bucks to the theater.)The bottom line is that this film is pretty easygoing when it comes to kids & you can rest assured that there's really no objectionable content in this movie. Parents can also breathe a sigh of relief that they'll be just as entertained. If you can, I recommend paying for the 3-D; it's worth seeing it, especially for the end credits where you get to see minion hijinks. This might not be the best kid's film to hit the theaters this summer (nothing can really compete against Toy Story 3), but it is worth seeing.
I was waiting for a movie called Despicable Me and all I got was themost sweetest character life has to offer.(MISLEADING) Hey I'm moredispicle than he is and I don't have a movie dedicated to me. LETDOWN!Awwww he adopts three kids from the orphanageWHY?????????????????????YAWN,BORRRRING,ZZZZZZZZZ! of course thiswould'nt happen in real life with just one parent and that fast, CGIbeautiful,3D good, laughs SPARCE, story I did'nt see one just a pile ofnothing it did'nt play like a movie. The best CGI movie for me was THEINCREDIBLES hands down! funny, thoughtful, character driven it hadeverything you wanted in a film. All theses DIRECTORS,WRITERS shouldwatch it and study it. Make me care for Thecharacters give them purposeMAKE ME CARE. See it if you must but if you don't you're not missingmuch. THE END
This review is from: Despicable Me (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) "Toy Story 3" may have won the Golden Globe award for best animated film, but far and away the BEST animated film in 2010 was "Despicable Me". I've seen both films and although very good, "Toy Story 3" cannot match "Despicable Me" at any level. "Despicable Me" is funnier and will appeal to adults as well as children. Steve Carell is outstanding. This is a film you will want to watch more than once, it's a classic.
What were they thinking? A plot about an evil man who adopts threesmall girls just to use them in his evil plot to steal something andthen return them to the orphanage after they no longer serve hispurpose? is that bad enough? No.When returned to the orphanage, like unwanted merchandise, they are putin a box of "Shame" for being returned. Come on. How in God's name doyou think my two adopted daughters felt after leaving that movie? Whydid the film need to degrade adopted children in this manner? Thinknext time. Anyone associated with the creation of this movie should beput in a "Box of Shame"
Despicable Me centers on a mediocre super villain named Gru (Voiced bySteve Carrell's best imitation of Bela Lugosi), a man with minions, amad scientist to invent weapons for him, and a pet dog/fraggle. Heplots to use a shrink ray so he can steal the moon, but that plan isthwarted when the shrink ray is stolen by a rival super villain, thefilm's overly obnoxious antagonist Vector (Voiced by Jason Segel). Buthope is not lost for Gru. He adopts three orphan girls (Voiced by thealright Dana Gaier, the simply adorable Elsie Fisher, and the somewhateffective Miranda Cosgrove of iCarly fame), to sell Vector cookies, sothat he can steal back the shrink ray, and complete his objective. Butsoon the girls start to warm Gru's cold heart, and make him realizehe's a better good guy than bad.The film's premise is solid, and it tries its best to do good with thematerial, and I say "tries" because it's only half-successful. It takesa lot of influence from things like Pixar films, and Looney Tunes, andat times quite trivially. Some characters feel too rushed in screentime, and are inconsistently written, changing from sympathetic, tosarcastic in the blink of an eye.The film has a large cast that, besides Carrell and Segel, includecomedic talents like Will Arnett, Russell Brand, and Kristen Wiig. Someof these characters feel annoying, and some feel like they're therejust to be there, such as Gru's impossible-to-please mother, voiced byscreen and stage legend Julie Andrews, who speaks in an inconsistentHungarian accent. The only thing that really keeps the movie on its feet is the humor, with some fine one-liners, and often delightful sight gags, none theleast of which are Gru's hilarious yellow followers who steal each andevery scene they're in. But not all of the humor is successful (Icringed over a visual reference to Blu-Ray players), and even if thevoice cast had some strong passion for their roles, it didn't translatetoo well onto screen. There's also an often distracting score whichtries too hard to sound like a score by Hans Zimmer and David Arnold. As far as both kids and adults go, I can't quite recommend DespicableMe because it is a good movie, and would be much MUCH quicker tosuggest films like How to Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3......but Despicable Me is witty, heartfelt, and enjoyable enough for meto give it **1/2 out of ****
I seem to remember this getting a fairly patchy response from thecritics when it came out probably all that 3D nonsense. Fortunately Imanaged to avoid all that by waiting for it to appear on TV in thecorrect number of dimensions for the screen. As for the film, well Ireally enjoyed it! Likable characters, a nice plot and some great comicmoments who could ask for more!? I'll give you further thoughts afterthis brief summary.Gru is a villain, he's been a villain for a long time, but now his evildeeds are being superseded by much younger up-and-coming villains. He'snot happy, even his mother finds him a bit of a disappointment, but hehas a plan. It's a very cunning and dastardly plan, but he'll need tosteal a shrink ray gun and borrow some money from the bank first. Hesteals the ray, but it's stolen from him by a young upstart villaincalled Vector. Gru tries to retrieve it but cannot gain entry to hiscompound. Seeing three orphan girls get in by selling cookies, Gruforms another plan. He goes to Miss Hattie's Orphanage and adopts thethree girls; Margo, Edith and Agnes. His plan: to get them into thecompound so he can plant something there that will allow him to gainaccess to the ray gun. His many minions and Dr. Nefario help him withthis clever scheme and it is a success but the girls have other ideasabout Gru and, it seems, they just might be turning him away from hisultimate goal To steal the ****! Oops, hope I didn't say too muchthere Sorry Spoiler Police I, I'll come quietly. As I've already said, I enjoyed this film very much, it must me my kindof humour or something, but there were far more 'laugh out loud'moments (for me) than usual. The animation was very well done, I'd goso far as to say it was almost up to Pixar standard. I loved SteveCarell as the voice of Gru, his Russian accent was hilarious. Alsoworthy of note were the voice talents of; Jason Segel as Vector,Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, Julie Andrews as Gru's Mom, Will Arnettas Mr, Perkins, Kristen Wiig as Miss Hattie, Miranda Cosgrove as Margo,Dana Gaier as Edith and Elsie Fisher as Agnes. One of the things I like to write about when reviewing a film is how itmakes me feel. Well, this film did pull at the heartstrings a little, but much more than that it made me laugh. It's definitely one I willre-visit at some point because I'm sure there are many subtle littlejokes I missed first time around. Whether you're young or slightlyolder (like me), I'm sure you'll get some laughs out of this one It'snot perfect, but I very much enjoyed it nonetheless Recommended. My Score: 8.4/10.IMDb Score: 7.5/10 (based on 68,835 votes at the time of going topress).Rotten Tomatoes Score: 81/100 (based on 187 reviews counted at the timeof going to press).
This review is from: Despicable Me (Single-Disc Edition) (DVD) Great entertainment for the whole family. Funny scenes throughout the movie. Enjoyed this movie and looking forward to watching it again real soon.
My family and I absolutely love this movie. The Minions, IMO, are the stars of this film. But the 3 little girls are quite adorable. My only real issue is i purchased the "Despicable Me (Minion Madness DVD Double Pack + Digital Copy) (DVD)". Per all the instructions, no Digital copy transfer comes from either of the 2 DVDs. This package did not come with the actual "Digital Copy DVD", but the packaging states "Digital Copy". I emailed Universal support but after 2 days, no response.
Despicable Me was DEFINITELY the best movie of 2010 possibly of thelast decade! I left the theater loving it and thinking "I am so gonnabuy this when it gets on DVD" and sure enough, I got it for Christmaswith an inflatable minion. This movie had an all-star cast and they allgave their best performances!Steve Carrell as Gru-Steve did an amazing job with a fantastic accent. His acting was splendid and his character was really something. Gru'sBest Lines: "You have to be pulling on my leg!" "We stole the statue ofliberty! The small one from Las Vegas!" Jason Segal as Vector-Vector was by far the best character! Vector isjust a nerd who can do big things. Thank goodness Vector is a supervillain or else he would be a target of every kind of bully imaginable.Jason Segal had the right voice and everything for Vector. Best VectorLines: "A little tiny toilet for a little tiny baby to- AAHH! Curse youtiny toilet!" "NO I'M NOT PLAYING WITH IT!"Miranda Cosgrove as Margo-Miranda has the perfect voice to play Margoand the right attitude. She is the only person they could have pickedto pull of this character. She says all these witty things that only aMargo could say. She takes care of her sisters and is a great characterto the story. Best Margo Line: "What about the air? Can we touch theair?" Dana Gaier as Edith-Edith is a ruffian and just awesome. She is thetough one out of the three orphans and she is the one who has manyfunny moments. I think Dana did an excellent job playing her, she had aperfect voice to fit Edith's rough personality. Best Edith Lines:"Oops" "It poked a hole in my juice box" "What? I'm just walking"Elsie Fisher as Agnes-Elsie was really cute and adorable in this movie. Its hard to believe a girl this little could voice a character just asgood as veteran actors such as Steve Carrell and Russell Brand. Mosteveryone knows her for her funny lines. Elsie Fisher is going to becomea BIG star one day, mark my words. Best Agnes Lines: "Does this countas annoying?" "Its so fluffy I'm gonna die!" "IT'S SO FLUFFY!" "Myunicorn! You have to fix it!"Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario-I was surprised when I heard Russell Brandplayed a super old guy. He didn't seem like his voice could pull offold. I will admit he did the worst acting in the movie but still a GOODperformance. His character was interesting, I guess. Best Dr. NefarioLines: "BOOGIE!" "I was wondering under what circumstances would weneed this?" Kristen Wiig as Miss Hattie-Funny stuff! Every scene with Miss Hattiein it was funny and enjoyable. She had a great accent and such a funnypersonality. She seemed Despicable and desperate. Kristen Wiig did agreat job as Miss Hattie and whoever did casting, I would pick them ifI was making a movie. Kristen Wiig was perfect. Best Miss Hattie Lines:"Look at my face! Do you still think it's a great sale day?!" "Ipurchased a Spanish dictionary. I didn't like what you said about me""We wouldn't want to spend the weekend in the box of shame. Would we?No?" "Go clean something of mine"Julie Andrews as Gru's Mom-Julie Andrews is too sweet to play such aDespicable woman. She crushed her son's dreams and laughed. I will makethis one brief, good acting bad voice. Best Gru's Mom Lines: "You'retoo late son. NASA isn't sending the monkeys anymore." "Eh"GREAT MOVIE!!!!
This review is from: Despicable Me (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I was skeptical when I saw that Steve Carell played the lead role. But I didn't even really notice. I thought he did a tremendous job with this character. really surprised, guess I don't know enough of his work. The movie was probably the best I saw in 2010. Can you believe that? A cartoon! I guess that is more common nowadays. Women were crying in the theater, including the one next to me! You know, that good cry. Watch this with your girl and/or family at home! Good couple of hours spent. I'd give it 6 stars, and i don't say that lightly. I saw Megamind last year also, and was so disappointed after seeing this. Not that it was really bad, but it pandered. If you have to make a choice, go with this one! This is THE 3D family movie!
Right in the center of a normal neighborhood, in normal suburbia, sits an odd house with a dried out lawn and large spires. Inside is the secret lair of an ambitious super villain Gru (Steve Carell) and his army of mischievous minions.Gru is wallowing in the shadow of a highly publicized heist completed by a competing super villain named Vector (Jason Segal), so Gru attempts to raise his game.Along the way, Gru crosses paths with three orphaned girls who view him not as a villain, not as cold or uncaring but most importantly, not as a failure. The orphans see Gru as their savior from the orphanage. The three girls (Margo, Edith and Agnes) are the key to Gru's transformation, his master plan and the overall plot of this Universal answer to "Shrek 4â³ and "Toy Story 3â³ Unfortunately, they are not in the same class.First, there is no reason for this to be in 3-D as it offers nothing to improve the story. The animation as several flaws, dark shadows drag lines and poorly portrays the emotions of its characters compared to Pixar's Woody and pals.Second, this is a child's film first and foremost. There are plenty of laughs, especially from the minions, but your kids are going to enjoy this film much more than you. There are plenty of big names offering their voices: Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, Julie Andrews as Gru's Mom and Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly) is Margo. It was only Steve Carell's Gru that stood out.Sierra, age 11 said: "It was great to see a story from the villain's point of view." My eight-year-old didn't have a bad thing to say "I liked all of it" and the 5-year-old from our group (not a Jones) loved it so much that she thought she could go see it again. The teenage son was much more critical of the animation and was moderate in his praise.I concur."Despicable Me" is a good film, not a great one even though it's great to their target audience:10-year-olds and younger. There are a ton of great gags, funny lines, but the story is predictable and derivative lacking the depth and meatiness that audiences have found in the Pixar films. The trailers have ruined a couple of the better moments, which is always frustrating. Most important is that the parenting theme is inferior to great films like "Up" or "Finding Nemo".
