Random goofiness only begets more tired jokes.
It's a tough double act, but the film pulls it off with great confidence and some major laughs.
I Thought this movie was pretty good. I went into it with not too highof expectations and i was pleasantly surprised. It stars Robert downyJr and Zach Galifinakus* I think both of these actors are very funnyand they do a great job in this one. This movie is about a man with anger problems (Downy) who has a mishapon an airplane and gets put on the no fly list. He then has to get aride with a simpleton (Galifinakus)who naturally drives him nuts thewhole way their. This movie has a lot of laugh out loud moments and great performancesfrom the cast. It is mainly just these two followed by a shortperformance by Jamie fox. If you like Zach Galifinakus or Robert DownyJr this movie is definitely going to make you laugh.
Due Date should be a disaster, derivative of every road-trip movie you've ever seen. What prevents that are the efforts of the two stars.
I just saw this movie recently and I must say, I laughed the wholetime. Zach Galifinakis and Robert Downey Jr. make a great team. I findthat each one separately is very funny. Put them together and it's ariot. There were some parts that reminded me of The Hangover (which Ididn't like) but I thought that in this movie, those parts were muchbetter. I also liked the concept of the movie. Mixed in with all theantics were some very nice scenes that were a bit more serious. It wasa good balance. On the other side, I found that some events in the story were easy topredict. At some moments, it seemed like the movie was following thestandard formula for a comedy of this type. I would've liked to see alittle more originality with some of the scenes.Overall, I definitely recommend this movie for people that like a goodlaugh and enjoy some mild ridiculousness. Fans of The Hangover (andeven some people who aren't) will like this movie. I give this movie an8.5-9 out of 10.
Todd Phillips' Due Date takes us firmly back to Planes, Trains andAutomobiles territory (albeit without the train), and while it cannever hope to match the original for its humour, it does update thestory to the present-day taste for near-the-knuckle gross-out humour. So where we had John Candy sleeping with his hand between SteveMartin's cheeks thirty years ago, we today have Robert Downey Jr.trying to get some shut-eye in the passenger seat of a parked car, while beside him Zack Galifianakis (and his dog) masturbates furiouslyin a pre-sleep ritual. Whether you think that is a progression, aretrograde step, or worthy of equal laughs is bound to determinewhether you'll enjoy Due Date.Robert Downey Jr. plays Peter Highman, a highly-strung businessman whomwe meet as he prepares to catch a cross-country flight to LA where hiswife (Michelle Monaghan) is about to give birth to their first child. At the airport, his hand baggage is accidentally switched with that ofEthan Tremblay (Zack G.), a camp, would-be actor on his way toHollywood to make his fortune. Events conspire to throw this odd coupletogether after they are both ejected from their plane and placed on ano-fly list, meaning they must travel across country together. The movie starts quite shakily, and I reluctantly found myselfsympathising with Downey Jr.'s character, which I'm sure isn't a goodthing, or what writers Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland and Adam Sztykielintended. Maybe that makes me as uptight as Highman, I don't know, butseeing him shot by an over-zealous security guard, then beaten by a'handi-capable' Vietnam vet really had me sympathising with the guy. Ieven understood why he does what he does to drug dealer Heidi's(Juliette Lewis) obnoxious kid. He's the guy who does and says the kindof things we've all felt like doing or saying at some time or another, and presumably this film is here to tell us why we shouldn't act uponthose impulses. Things settle down a bit after this as Peter and Ethanembark on their cross-country odyssey, and their mutual enmity slowlyand inevitably gives way to a tentative friendship. Where this filmdiffers from other movies - and is to be commended - is in the way itresists the stereotypical 'best friends' ending of most other typicalbuddy/road movies. Highman might have warmed towards Ethan and gainedan insight into the human condition, but he's still reluctant to havethe guy hanging around any more than necessary. While it won't be for all tastes, Due Date has some seriously funnymoments, and apart from a laboured (no pun intended) final reel, manages to maintain a regular supply of laughs throughout. Given DowneyJr.'s personal history, it's quite ironic that he assumes the characterof an uptight businessman so well, and Galifianakis continues to buildon the reputation he acquired following his role in The Hangover.Michelle Monaghan, however, is wasted in the role of Downey's wife, given only a few inconsequential scenes of her own, mostly on the endof a phone line.
I think that Due Date operates under the main premise that the viewerhas never heard of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, for if they had, they'd be wondering why they were watching the same movie with all thejokes stripped out. Due Date is, in total, neither a terrible nor anoffensive film. Its problem is that it's a little too bitter, thuseliminating with surgical precision any empathy we might have for itstwo protagonists. It's a road trip with an obvious end in sight andsomewhat unpredictable wacky hijinks in between. You could do worse, but you could do much better.Peter Highman (Robert Downey, Jr.) is an architect who's attempting tofly out of Atlanta back home to Los Angeles to be with his wifeMichelle Monaghan, who's about to give birth. But thanks to a bag mixupwith a fellow traveler named Ethan Trembley (Zach Galifianakis), Peterfinds himself stranded in Atlanta, placed on the national No Fly list(minor misunderstanding, of course). Ethan offers him a cross-countryride in his rental, and off we go.The movie uses the trope of mismatched people enduring a commonexperience. Peter is uptight, dithering endlessly about what to namehis newborn. Ethan is, well, flighty. In fact, Galifianakis seems to beplaying the same character he played in the two Hangover films:childlike, maybe psychopathic and/or sociopathic, not all there. He'swildly misinformed about such things as the Grand Canyon and the HooverDam, but he is heading west to try to make it as an actor in Hollywood.Oh, and did I mention he's carrying the ashes of his deceased father ina coffee can to dispose of along the way? Well, there's that, too.You and I both know that there's no way Peter and Ethan will make itfrom Georgia to California without any problems. But Peter has nochoice - his wallet was confiscated at the airport, and his bags are ontheir way to LA. He has no cash and no ID. It could happen to anyone. So he's essentially at Ethan's mercy. Along the way, we learn muchabout the characters and what makes them tick, but whereas the earlierPlanes, Trains got melancholy without getting maudlin, this oneachieves no such feat.Downey, Jr. and Galifianakis give it their best shot, and to tell thetruth they're not bad. They make an okay team; it's just that it's ateaming we've seen before, and much better. Steve Martin and John Candygot into their share of situations that would never happen to a normalperson, but they also ran into problems with which we could all relate;here, it's more of the former than the latter. It's as if the moviekeeps daring itself to get weirder and weirder. The final, near-fatal flaw of the movie is that it really doesn't giveyou anyone to root for - except of course at the end. It's a comedy, after all. But these guys do some rather nasty things to each other, and not in the oh-no-he-didn't sort of way, either; rather, in thescowling, almost hateful way. It's a little disconcerting at times. Butthe actors do their best, as I said, and you could do worse.
I adore Robert Downey Jr, and was thrilled at the possibilities thismovie presented. There were a few funny moments, but overall anabsolute let-down. I literally couldn't finish it; I reached my"stupid" quota about 30 minutes from the end. I despise movies that areunbelievable and unrelatable; shouting at my TV, "Why would you dothat?" or, "Why didn't you do this?" is very irritating. Once RobertDowney Jr got shot, I was done. Way too many unbelievable andthoroughly irrelevant mishaps.I have not the slightest curiosity as to the ending; wish I hasn'twasted the money on this non-comedic "comedy." Hope Robert Downey Jr chooses better in his next film.
Hangover was a one trick pony for director Todd Phillips this i'm sure!As soon as i saw that this was going to be a Planes Trains AndAutomobiles (Ill entitle it P.T.A.A. for the rest of the review) ripoff i almost stopped watching. One person kept me watching and that wasRobert Downey Jr. Forgiving him almost immediately for the terribleSherlock Holmes I figured this will show his comedic side what it didshow me is his incredibly ticked off side and who can blame him wouldyou want to travel across the states with Zack Galifianakis? All ilearn-ed from this film is how irritating a character that Galifinakiscan portray as i wonder if that makes him a great actor? Rememberhearing something a while back about Kevin Bacon if he makes you hatehim that bad it shows hes doing a good job. Needless to say RobertDowney Jr.'s character Peter Highman is trying his best to arrive hometo sunny California in time for the birth of his first son. Things aregoing well as he is seated on the plane in the seat directly in frontof Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) well thats where it all goes to hell. After getting booted off the plane due to this butt lick of a man healso ends up on the no fly list for naughty passengers which leaves himwith little and no choice to take an offered ride from Tremblay. HencePlanes, Trains And Automobiles the next generation begins. I laughedduring this i think maybe twice, actually the feeling i had throughmost of it was to stop myself with the urge to imaginably punch throughthe movie screen with the hope that the punch would land directly inGalifianakis's face. Sure they added some new twists to the old storyof P.T.A.A. however give me the team of Candy and Martin any day overthese two, although also obnoxious at times, at least Candy's characterwas lovable!
A road movie about two different people forced to travel together, donebefore but a nice twist on it. Unfortunately it didn't work for me.The problem is that this film is fairly sincere and shot with a degreeof realism. I think the concept is best suited for a glitzy shallowcomedy. With the likes of 'Road Trip' etc. the characters are twodimensional enough to bounce back from whatever is thrown at them, herefunny moments are soured by the realisation that the characters arehurting. To progress the plot a certain amount of zany events need to takeplace, again in a trashy comedy you can get away with throwing allkinds of bizarre obstacles at the characters. Here I found myselfquestioning the antics unfolding.Where the likes of 'Planes Trains Autombiles' is light hearted withmoments of tenderness this got a little depressing. The production is great the acting is top notch, but by the end I wasbored.

Can lightening strike twice with director Todd Phillips, director ofthe highest grossing comedy of all time, "The Hangover"? Phillip's hastaken one of the ingredients from that film and thrown it in here. Thespecific ingredient is Mr. Zach Galafinakis, who absolutely stole "TheHangover" in every scene he was in, which was basically the whole film. What made "The Hangover" work so well was the chemistry between theleads. This is what makes "Due Date" stall a little bit. Sure, theparts where Downey and Galafinakis are conflicting with each other arebelievable, but the parts where they are supposed to be friends isn't.Galafinakis is basically playing the same role of the weird fat man ashe did in "The Hangover", but the character of Downey Jr. is just plainmean spirited and very one dimensional. The film is about Peter Highman (Downey Jr.) who must get back from LosAngles before his wife gives birth to their first child. Everythinggoes to plan until he meets Ethan Trembly (Galafinakis), who is anaspiring actor who wants to try to make it big in the city of dreams. These two are then kicked off the plane and put on the no fly listduring the first of their many conflicts in the film. Both decide toshare a rented car and drive to L.A.. From here, everything that couldgo wrong does. The film definitely has laughs, but it seems there is no passion in thejokes or anything else in the film. The film gets the job done, butwith a very passive feeling to it. Another problem is that everything, well outside of Ethan's dog favorite past time, has been done beforeand way better. "Due Date" offers nothing really new to the table. Ittakes existing plots points and tries to make them more disgusting. It isn't that I hated the film, it just is very lazy and has absolutelyno spark what so ever. Hopefully Phillips phoned this one in and issaving his passion for "The Hangover 2".
I really enjoyed this movie...Originally, even though I absolutely adore Robert Downey Jr and think he is comic genius, I wasn't particularly interested in watching it, but my daughter pushed me to.... I thought it was hilarious and now feel the need to purchase it! Lots of laughs. It kind of reminded me of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in the way it was written.... also a highly recommended movie. If you're just looking to have fun... watch it.
The good cast couldn't make up for the dull writing. So much of themovie relies on tired clichés -- especially buddy-movie clichés andcliché travel scenarios. The film doesn't have a fraction of the laughs(nor emotion) of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles." And I felt solittle for the characters that I found myself completely apathetic totheir misfortune.I chuckled at only one scene and smirked a few times at Zach's outfitand funny little walk; that is 30 seconds of enjoyment throughout 1.5hours. I would recommend the movie if stuck on an airplane with few choices. But even then it might be more enjoyable to just read the in-flightmagazine.
monstrous waste of time. At least Cheech and Chong made stonerssomewhat comical. This guy is just a boring far-too-real stoner type ineverything he does. Can you say fat, disgusting and not the least bitfunny? The movie is a waste of Robert Downey Jr's considerable talents.I suggest you all run!! Run, run, run, fast and far. It's a waste ofyour time and if you paid anything, it's a waste of your money. Andplease.....boycott anything with Zach Galifianakis. He's a horribleactor, and plays the same brainless, boring character, over and overagain.Downey's character isn't as strong as it should be. He's a brilliantactor and this was not the least bit challenging for his talents. AndGalifianakis? What a waste of oxygen!!! He can't act, he can't playanything but a weedhead, and he has zero comedic timing. I mean, hekeeps playing the same brain-dead character over-and-over again. Prettyfriggin' sad.
This feels like minor Phillips to me -- something in the neighborhood of 2006's "School for Scoundrels," quality-wise, though with a much grimmer heart.
While RDJ's character is a borderline A-hole, he seems to experiencesome growth and his humanity surfaces as the movie unfolds. My basicproblem with this film was the fact that Zach's character is genuinelyunlikable from start to finish. There's no real growth or movement tomake the character less annoying or more likable. What you see is whatyou get and it grates on the viewer almost as much as it grates onRDJ's nerves. They deliver a few funny moments along the way but notnearly as many as I was expecting. It's a wild, unbelievable andsometimes annoying journey but it's not an overly funny trip. I feltthat RDJ's talent was wasted as all he does is play the straight man toZach's outrageous stupidity. Sure his performance and reactions are toptier acting but would anyone expect anything less?
Greetings again from the darkness. Director Todd Phillips has becomecomedy director du jour thanks first to "Old School" and the morerecent mega-blockbuster "The Hangover". This film is not quite at thelevel of the two prior films, but it certainly holds it own in today'smultiplex. In other words, it has some laughs ... even a few laughoutloud moments. Especially if you have somehow managed to avoid thetrailers. The best way I can describe this one is as an updated "Planes, Trainsand Automobiles", only with Todd Phillips humor, rather than JohnHughes humanity. That being said, Mr. Phillips does work hard atminimizing the gross-out factor and does try to instill some truecharacter development with Robert Downey, Jr and Zach Galifianakis. Theelement of fatherhood, both loss of and becoming one, plays a role asthese two opposites bang heads for 3 days.Ethan (Zach G) is an actor-wannabe, motivated by the sitcom Two and aHalf Men. He is an excessively annoying individual who displays onlythe rarest moments of rationale behavior. Downey, Jr is reunited withhis "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" co-star Michelle Monaghan as an uptightarchitect (Peter) and his soon to deliver first child wife (Sarah). They get little screen time together, but the relationship plays arole. Circumstances cause Ethan and Peter into a rental car and crosscountry race to get Peter home before Sarah delivers. The road trip includes a Western Union run in with Danny McBride, a pitstop for glaucoma meds with Juliette Lewis and a quick ride from JamieFoxx, after Ethan falls asleep at the wheel and they fly off a highwayramp. Just when things seem better, Ethan partakes in some of themedication, takes a wrong turn and the two find themselves at theMexico border, glassy eyes and all. This all occurs while Ethan and hisdog work to befriend Peter, while transporting not only the "meds", butalso Ethan's deceased father's ashes ... in a coffee can. Many of the gags are predictable, but some are quite funny. It doesn'thave near the gross-out element of "The Hangover", except for Ethan'spre-bedtime ritual and his matching dog. Would have liked a few moresegments with cameos - maybe the other guys from "The Hangover",because the attempt at making these guys appreciate each other falls abit short. The soundtrack includes Neil Young, Cowboy Junkies, Creamand Pink Floyd, so there is usually a nice background tune playing.Additionally, RDJ and Zach G prove once again that they are forces ofphysical comedy when provided decent material.
Movie had some funny scenes in it but definitely cannot be categorized under comedy. i would says entertaining with "okay" story but noting special. it made me laugh two occasions but overall can't get more than C
Just saw this movie, was really funny! If you're looking for a good comedy, that will keep you laughing.. I would definately recommend this movie.
