Brilliant!

I have no idea what half the other reviewers have been watching! Theshow is British/American. You can't just cut out the only thing Britishabout it (the couple). They add the British humour. I really don't seehow the show would be funny if it had an American couple trying to dothe same thing. The whole point of the show would be lost. Isn't thatwhat 'Episodes' is about? Taking a good show and turning it into'Pucks!'? Anyway, I think the series is amazing. Tamsin and Stephen areutterly hilarious, and very easy to relate to. Matt LeBlanc makeseverything all the more amazing! He is playing somebody I find verydifficult to sum-up, but I do hope that he is not playing himself. Notcompletely anyway. I can't wait to see what they do for the nextseries, hopefully it will be just as good as this one, if not better.

Great show

This is a really great show. It has bin all while that there was such agood show. It is so well written en the actors are all perfect forthere rolls. It is so funny. I'm glad that there is gonna be a secondseason!! Really everybody watch this show. A good combination betweenEnglish and American humor. I think if you like friends and the office. You will enjoy this series. I hope you like the show as much as i do.It is a good combination for simple humor and heavy humor. I think thisshow is so great because there is all lot of English humor in thisshow. The main character's are well played by the actors. Especiallythe two British actors. And Matt Leblanc also plays a steady roll.

Hysterical

I *looooove* this show! It will unfortunately crash and burn because itis far too smart for most television viewers. How can it be funny whenthere is no studio audience to let me know when to laugh? :p MattLeblanc should win an Emmy. He is the perfect smarmy narcissist (andhopefully bears no resemblance to himself.) The British couple arepitch-perfect. Writing is dead on, capturing all the nuance of theclash of British and American culture. I was working in LA for a whileand as a Canadian, I can relate to the subtle (and not so subtle)differences between cultures. I have always loved British comedy forits subtle, sniper-style humour. This show marries that style with themore traditional broad American comedy - while neither diluting norcorrupting either. Can't wait for the next episode!

Mildly amusing

The DVD has not yet been released in the U.S. but I bought my Episodes Season 1 in mp4 format from the popular fruit-named media store based in Palo Alto for $2.99 per episode in HD. You can buy the DVD from Amazon UK but you should ensure that your DVD player will play Region 2 DVDs; the Blu-Ray from Amazon UK is supposedly region-free.So far, I have watched 5 of the 7 total episodes of Season 1 and can't say that I find the show all that entertaining. It is definitely not a sit-com; I would consider it as more a drama with an outside shot at wry humour. There is nothing funny watching the marriage of an English couple unravelling from the stress and plasticity of Tinseltown, or of an assistant having an adulterous affair with the producer (both at least have the decency to be in agreement that he should not leave his blind wife) or of an actor having lost custody of his two young sons even though he is a doting father, if an incorrigible skirt-chaser. There are no smart quips or comical situations to make up for these depressing scenarios. That said, however, I really did enjoy the show for Matt LeBlanc's stellar performance as an actor. I am not the type to pigeon-hole an artist for his/her one famous role and, as much as the ensemble cast of FRIENDS shone, I find Matt LeBlanc at his peak in Episodes. I also admire that he is not afraid to show his age with his greying hair which, if anything, makes his look even sexier. His every facial expression and body language shows some well-honed and confident acting skills. Every lift of his eyebrow or curl of his lip is well-orchestrated to the very moment. LeBlanc shows that he can play a blasé sardonic alter-ego of himself as well as he played simple puerile Joey in FRIENDS. He fully deserves his Emmy; if anything, it was long overdue. The rest of the cast is forgettable. I do not find much warmth or chemistry between them and the characters they play are not exactly likeable. Tamsin Greig is somewhat unemotional in her acting but it could be because she plays the typical Englishwoman who does not wear her feelings on her sleeves. Stephen Mangan's character has the potential to develop further, especially if he is allowed to get into more antics with LeBlanc, but currently he is somewhat restricted as the good husband always trying to appease his dissatisfied wife. All in all, I would still plough through the rest of the season and may even purchase Season 2 when it becomes available.

A Smart And Savvy Industry Satire--Matt LeBlanc Plays Matt LeBlanc In Another Finely Tuned Ensemble

When Showtime was touting the new comedy "Episodes" for its winter line-up, a lot of the pre-press and advertising had to do with Matt LeBlanc. While I like LeBlanc, his presence in a new show was neither a particular draw for me nor a deterrent. However, I did tune in to give the program a shot and was pleasantly surprised that instead of purely a LeBlanc vehicle, "Episodes" featured a smart and savvy ensemble of actors in a delightful (and frighteningly believable) skewering of the entertainment industry. Most specifically, the show targets the creative and borderline insane process behind bringing a new television program to air. This surprisingly intelligent foray into scathing satire may not be the best program on the subject I've ever seen (try the uncomfortable awkwardness of "The Comeback," the blistering ruthlessness of "Action," or the of-the-moment imperative of "Grosse Pointe" as other possible candidates), but it is pretty on-the-mark! What is intriguing, and quite appealing, about "Episodes" is that it combines the outrageous rudeness you might expect from Showtime with a droll British sensibility more in line with BBC. In fact, it is precisely this dichotomy that fuels the entire premise of the program. The season revolves around what happens when a successful and critically acclaimed British sitcom is adapted and Americanized for a stateside audience. The actual leads of the show are Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Grieg as the married co-creators of said sitcom who are enticed to Hollywood to helm the new interpretation. Playing as fish out of water comedy in earlier segments, the couple soon realize that compromise and capitulation are key in this new environment. For the stuffy headmaster role, the part gets handed to LeBlanc and reinterpreted as a hockey coach in the newly christened "Pucks." But this is just the beginning of the nightmare ride that just may destroy the couple!Stephen Mangan is terrific--it's hard not to be caught up in his boyish enthusiasm! Grieg tackles the more difficult role with precision--she can be mildly unlikable but is generally the most sensible character in any particular scene. And finally, there's LeBlanc. LeBlanc perfectly uses his world weary charm to great affect. Trading on his persona, he oozes intelligence and industry savvy and, quite frankly, playing an alter ego fictionalization of himself displays more range than you might expect. It's a fabulous performance played with ease. John Pankow personifies showbiz phoniness as a studio executive, Mircea Monroe avoids easy stereotyping as a sexy co-star, and the delightful Kathleen Rose Perkins is the show's secret weapon as Pankow's peppy assistant! This great cast brings this biting satire to life, but it's the well observed screenplays that really sell the concept. The first episode is primarily set-up--but after that, the episodes are bright (there are seven half hour episodes in total), lively and quite smart about the industry. I really enjoyed "Episodes." For me, it's a 4 1/2 star experience--but I particularly recommend it to anyone with an inherent interest in television or Hollywood shenanigans! KGHarris, 2/11.

Could be the next big thing

OK,let me start my review by saying that there aren't many good comedyshows or sitcoms in TV these days.I was hugely disappointed whenCharlie Sheen was removed from Two and a half men, forinstance.Well, then I came across this show and found the premise quiteinteresting. Season 1,of the show was fairly good, with some smart humorscattered here and there. The show reminds you of 30 Rock at places. Ifyou love 30 Rock, then you will probably love this one too. Still what'scool about this show is that, the pilot made me watch the subsequentepisodes. Acting wise,The performances by the lead actors were prettygood, especially Matt LeBlanc, who I think,is the best in the show.He mayhave gotten older, but acting-wise,he's still remains one of my favoriteTV Actors. However, the drawbacks of Season 1 were,as I said before, fewand scattered jokes, and less number of episodes, only 7,also,I couldn'tunderstand some of the British words. However,I still feel that,if theshow is given a chance, then yeah, with some slick writing,it may turnout to be the next big thing ever,Talk of the Town,if I may. Probablythe best episode of Season 1 is the finale episode, the fight betweenMatt and Sean is quite hilarious. On concluding,I would like to saythat,Season 1 does not disappoint you.

It is and it is'nt.

Saw all the episodes. Don't get me wrong - I am an European - so I am abig fan of good English humour. But that show is not about Englishhumour. If Matt LeBlanc walks on to the stage and actual characters arereferring to him as Joey - you can't help it. You want Joey, cause youlike Joey a lot. OK, we got a picture - this is not a sequel to theFriends. But what is it then? The center of the show is - no doubt - MattLeblanc. And he pretty much remind you Joey - irresponsible, womanizer, short memory, a little naive ... etc. He IS Joey. Or somewhat of a morestatic and shallow version of his comic talent, we have used to see. It's almost like as he hides his mimical talents to avoid similaritiesto "Friends" and Joey. And that makes him look like if he did gave youa 70 percent of what he has.Other characters: Stephen is quite ell played and watchable as a bitconservative englishman with his dry humour and faux pau's. So is Carol(Cathleen Rose Perkins) as a stereotypical shallow and self-centeredstereotype of - would I say - typical American? But this Merc-guy is... just not funny and not interesting to watch. And finally - Beverley(Tamsin Greig). She just is'nt likable. She is boring, annoying andeven quite ugly. The last episode with having sex with Matt was notbelievable - I found it difficult to understand, why Matt wanted tohave sex with her. She just does'nt belong in the whole picture. And asshe has a major part in the show - it makes all the possible intrigueshard to swallow. Whith that being said, i did enjoy the chemistry andthat real sense of something, that was almost found at episode 7 at theconfrontation- and fight scene between Matt and Stephen. They should gorom there. So to make long story short - 6 quite boring episodes, and 7th, a quitegood one. Several annoying and boring characters and 3 quite good ones(Matt, Stephen, Carol). Far from brilliant, though. 6 points.

Comes alive when Matt LeBlanc's on...

Episodes is curious in that Friends' David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik seeit as an opportunity to let their hair down and write the kind ofcomedy drama which would never see the light of day on mainstream US TVand the Brit contingent, Langan and Greig, can play with the big boys –despite the one-off that was the Brti pop invasion of the Sixties, goodOld Blighty has a rather dog-in-the-manger attitude to the States, notleast because economies of scale mean there's a lot more money to bethrown around Stateside. This Brit – me – gets pretty fed up withLangan and Greig who are too mannered and knowing for my tastes, but ithas to be said that kind of thing goes down well in the UK whereeveryone likes to adopt a faux cynical seen-it-all air (which, ofcourse, they haven't). For me Matt LeBlanc steals the show. He has anatural comedic gift which manages to make every line fresh and, againfor me, a universe away from the mannered scenes between Langan andGreig. The two are flavour of the month this side of the Atlantic and,as always, we overdo it with a vengeance, casting them in everythinguntil the day their star suddenly wanes and a new flavour of the monthis born. The language is very fruity, but here in Britain allowing iton TV shows is regarded as progress and liberation, though I can't forthe life of me see why. I don't now whether this is being shown in theUS and, if so, on which cable channel, but although the kind oflanguage is commonplace in some situations, Episodes is rather guiltyof over-egging the pudding. But overall it has its moments, usuallythose in which Langan and Greig do not figure so prominently. JohnPankow's character as the studio exec with the blind wife is nicelydrawn as is his assistant cum mistress. But I wouldn't give it the 8out of 10 it is getting.

People don't get it...

This show is very clever doing what it does. The only reason somepeople don't like it is because their sense of humor is skewed. I neverexpected the humor to be like friends because of Matt or David Crane. Iexpected the same commitment from Matt though. He pours his self in thecharacter, since he is playing an extravagant fictional version ofhimself and creates excellent scenes between the two British writers.Sure it is dark and very hard to get into in the first episode, butafter episode 2 I was sold. Episode 3 was even better as there was moreMatt to go around!! His interactions with Beverly, their sniping ateach other and fighting felt genuine and was extremely funny! Give theshow a chance and try to expand your comical vocabulary!

Atrocious

Decided to give it a chance as I like to check out new shows hoping Iwill eventually get hooked on it. So as a fan of Green Wing, and manyBritish shows for that matter I was preparing myself for some wickedhumour and funny skits...but well... that didn't happen.Had to turn off the TV after painfully dreadful 30min of the mostboring plot ever crated. I'm still speechless and wondering who isresponsible for accepting show like that in widely known TV station, seriously I overhear more amusing stories in a bus on the daily :|Acting is painfully uncomfortable and awkward to watch so I assume itwill be pulled off the air after as much as couple of EPISODES :)

Promising Start

I enjoyed the first episode of Episodes, you've got Stephen Mangan,Tamsin Greig and of course Matt LeBlanc, what's not to like. There'ssome shock value humour, some more subtle laughs and some hilariousawkward moments; everything you need for a good start to a series, Ithink it shows promise and I'll definitely be tuning in next week. Now for the mildly Spoilery section:I really like the premise of the show, that it's a classy Britishsitcom ruined by it's American re-makers, because this is a thingeveryone has seen in the past and commented on, all the charm is lostand the casting is almost always wrong (however, though it is a bitdifferent I do love the US version of the Office). You've also got somegreat characters emerging already, Merc Lapidus seems like he'llprovide the blatant more slapstick humour; which I enjoyed in the firstepisode (if slightly cringeworthy in parts), and you have the big 3 whoseem to be gelling well already; and from viewing the trailer it seemsMatt and Sean's relationship will develop into something verywatchable. If you weren't as keen on the start of the Episodes series as me, Ithink it's definitely worth giving it a few 'Episodes' to settle in,most good comedies don't hit their stride for a few episodes or evenseries's so don't be too quick to judge Episodes. P.S I think it's important for people not to try and compare this toFriends, they're both very different shows; Friends is more foreveryone I feel and Episodes is a bit more niche and seems definitelymore adult. To wrap up, Episodes has made a promising start 9/10

Funny Doesn't even BEGIN to Describe the Show

It is so hard to find good comedy these days and in times of suchdearth of good comedies Episodes is definitely a whiff of fresh air,and a welcome change. What sets the show apart from the rest is theshow never attempts to go over the top in an attempt to extract somecheap laughs from its audience. It is a show where everyone is doingjust what they are supposed to do, behaving normally and the situationsand misunderstandings that develop are just brilliant and you cannothelp laughing. Good Comedy is not about some laughs by putting in a lotof one liners, and rather good comedy needs to be built up just as gooddrama or suspense, and the show does it perfectly. The show is full ofmoments had had me laughing and wanting more, but there is a lot ofbuild up to those moments, and they are not sprung upon the audiencelike a trap. Often there are almost ignored elements in the show whichare damn funny later on, like the moment when Beverly screams at thedoor saying "Does this B**** ever shut up." The show has many aspectsto it, and besides being a brilliant satire on the TV Productionindustry thanks in no small part to John Pankow's character MarcLapidus, or Katheline Rose Perkins, it is also a rather touching storyof two happily married and successful British writers who almostagainst their will are forced into the fiasco and trap (in a goodnatured way) that is Marc Lapidus and they quickly find out that thingsaren't what they seem. Amidst of all this of course is Matt Le Blancand all those who expect him to be Joey from Friends are in for asurprise. Gone are the physical humor or silliness of Joey and havebeen replaced by a far more sophisticated and suave Matt Le Blanc andas a big fan of Joey on Friends I honestly think this version is betterand so much funnier. Lastly the show is not about Matt Le Balnc alone. If I may take the liberty then I would go so far as to say that theshow is as much about Sean and Beverly Lincoln (Stephen Mangan andTamsin Greig) as it is about Matt Le Blanc, if not more. All in all Iwould strongly recommend it to anyone who has a good taste in comedy.

Episodes of Grandeur: Showtime's Latest Series Too Young to Die

Having wrapped up its punchy first season nearly two weeks ago,Showtime's latest offering, Episodes, has certainly stomped its foot inthe cable TV landscape. Despite relying on the age-old theme of"culture shock" for entertainment's sake, the show is reasonablywell-mapped, distinctly modern, and, most importantly, pretty damnfunny. But good shows don't always live to see a second season. Just asFriends cast mate Lisa Kudrow's hysterical HBO show-within-a-show, TheComeback, was prematurely cancelled, the possibility remained thatShowtime's Episodes might see no more – until now.Faced with the task of satirizing Hollywood – television networks, specifically – co-creators David Crane (Friends) and Jeffrey Klarik(Mad About You) come well-prepared for their role. Playing anexaggerated version of himself, hunky Friends alum Matt Leblanc alsoknows a thing or two about being a TV star – not to mention MattLeblanc. But the other main players aren't merely the salt and pepper to Matt'shearty appeal: British actors Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig coupleperfectly as the slightly naïve but hopeful husband and wife, eager toattain some professional validation American style.Of course, no series can pass muster without some form of conflict, andfor their respective characters Sean and Beverly Lincoln, that obstacleis obvious: Their newfound network executive. Played by John Pankow, head honcho Merc Lapidus institutes a bevy of changes to the couple'swildly successful UK series, Lyman's Boys, beginning with its leadactor.Originally portrayed by a well-seasoned British thespian (HarryPotter's Uncle Vernon), the categorically bottom-line orientedexecutive's first order of business is to get the old fat guy out. Thesecond? You guessed it; to get a youngish stud in.And since there's no discernible history of school administratorsbeing, well, attractive, there's no reason to cast Matt Leblanc in alead that isn't believable. Thus, old and obese turns early 40′s andfit, Headmaster becomes Hockey Coach, and Lyman's Boys is reborn Pucks.Helpless to inject change (or rather, halt it), the Lincolns ultimatelyfind themselves wondering if the American fame they sought was worthpotentially destroying their romantic relationship (and then the seriesends). This tension between wanting it "all" and finding that there maybe unwanted casualties as a result stands as the deepest ofobservations about the Hollywood machine depicted in Episodes. But in spite of criticisms citing the series as too reliant uponindustry stereotypes for a laugh, larger truths loom between jokes.Apart from the very real possibility that a career in Hollywood willusher the death of your marriage, Episodes also speaks to its femaleaudience directly: From questioning a woman's longevity in an ageistfield, to examining the shameless lengths some will go for professionalattainment, to reminding us that Matt Leblanc is "not a piece of meat,"there are, in fact, lessons to be learned. We're just happy theexecutives'll let us.

Discs won't work in three Blu-ray players

This review is from: Episodes [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Both my wife and I loved the show on Showtime, but I tried both of these discs in three different models of Sony Blu-ray players (BDP-S300, BDP-S350, and BDP-S360) and neither disc would work in any of them! Nowhere on the discs or the description here does it say they aren't US discs, but the show was done in association with BBC, and has a British rating on the package, so maybe these are actually UK-only discs. Anyway, it wouldn't work in the three Blu-ray players I tried it in! So I'm returning them to Amazon.Too bad, because the show itself is very funny!

Marbles86 (2012-04-27 17:27)

Watchable, but a considerable waste of potential so far

I love shows like CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM and LARRY SANDERS and amgenerally fascinated by the behind the scenes workings of Televisionand film, so I was quite excited about EPISODES. Sadly, on the whole ithas been disappointing. For a start the supposedly "brilliant" comedythat is being "ruined" by the American writers ("Lyman's Boys") soundsdull as dishwater, and it's hard to believe it would be so acclaimedand popular in modern British society. For a start, if Matt LeBlanccould notice it's a rip-off of HISTORY BOYS right down to the star, wouldn't someone in the UK have noticed it by now? The "remake" the USproducers are making is not a believably dumbed down version, butsomething so far removed from the original (even its title "Pucks")that it begs the question if it is really worthwhile for them to keeppaying the writers for the "Lyman's Boys" rights.I know Matt LeBlanc isn't the most versatile of actors, but some of thelines he's been given are blatant "Joey lines". Still he and JohnPankow (and in a small way Daisy Haggard) are the only people reallykeeping this afloat. I've never been a fan of Stephen Mangan but he'sOK here, and his character is semi-likable. Tamsin Greig's character onthe other hand is almost completely unbearable and it's hard to see whyanyone would put up with her constant whining, however horrible LA is.It can't be because she's got too much artistic integrity; if that werethe case she would turn down the money and leave. As of this writing I have seen the first four episodes of, er, EPISODESand they have just about been decent enough for me to probably tuneinto the next three, but unless something special happens I think thisseries is going to go down as a major missed opportunity.

(2012-04-27 13:07)

Disappointing...

I didn't know what to expect when I put on the first episode ofEpisodes on as I hadn't read any previews. I knew LeBlanc was playinghimself in it, and I knew two English actors from The Green Wing wouldbe main characters in it. The main thing I knew was that the creator ofFriends had made it. So it should be good right? Wrong. So very wrong.Somehow, I managed to get through the entire episode without turningthe TV over. The two main characters are simply not believable as acouple as they have zero chemistry. Stephen Mangan's only expression ishis natural one, wide-eyed shock. He has the face for comedy, but notthe delivery. Tamsin Grieg is a much better actor than Mangan but hasvery little opportunity to display any talent with such awful lines. Icannot judge LeBlanc as he's not exactly a feature of the firstepisode. The situations Mangan and Grieg find themselves in are predictable. Youcan see what's coming a mile off. This can be OK as long as the comedyis executed well. But unfortunately it is very poorly executed. Scenesoften become dragged out and far too long. This is bad enough when theoriginal joke is funny. When it's not even funny to start off with thelong scenes become almost painful.Sadly, this first episode was cringeworthy. Not in the same way as TheOffice where you are cringing for the characters, but because you arecringing for the actors having to deliver such feeble lines. There arefar too many 'tumbleweed moments'. If this gets a second series I willeat all my hats.I will not put myself through episode 2.

Mesh13-03 (2012-04-20 00:50)

It's not Joey, Its the writer.

I have great hopes for Episodes especially for the obvious reason, MattLe Blanc and David Crane back together, but Crane isn't the onlywriter, is it? There is another guy named, Jefferey Klarik. Not sayinghe is badwriter, but judging (bias, I know!) from his writer-graphy, hehas a sheer of bad luck! Now, Episodes started out great and ended upalright. Nothing went wrong for the first six episode but the finalepisode for me was weak. It was cheap, not funny and predictable. Ilike the actor, especially Matt Le Blanc, I am an avid FRIENDS fan buthonestly speaking I am not fond of Joey. But here Matt build his owncharacter and playing his self version was hilarious as hell. I do likethe British couple, they are talented and funny as well. Some reviewsindicated that people don't get the humor, I do! Like I stated above, the first to six episodes were brilliant (screenplay and humor wise)but the final episode killed it! I'm glad they got renewed, I wanna seewhere Episodes is going and I hope it's gonna be entertaining as it'ssupposed to be.

(2012-04-19 11:41)

HORRIBLE

As someone who LOVES most of what Showtime has to offer, I tried watching the first 3-4 episodes of this show and absolutely hated it!!! The show is rediculous, Matt LaBlanc is not funny at all and the show put me to sleep (literally) Check out one of the other outstanding series Showtime has to offer and get this one off the air ASAP!!!!!!!

edward2-2 (2012-04-14 13:25)

awfully mediocre

To be honest I do not even know where to start. I started to watch thisseries only because Matt and I guess a lot other will do the same.I was expecting much more I finally got. The story is just awful. Allseries generally are in huge huge crisis when they come up with theshow in the show idea (e.g.: Nip/Tuck) and Episodes is based aroundthis idea.About humour: its not present. Profanity is funny between 8 years old. There are a lot of awkwardness and very shallow jokes like repeating aword 1000 times. Again it is funny in basic elementary school not forgrown humans. Anyone who says English comedy is present clearly neverseen anything from Monty Python or shows like: Black Adder, Allo Allo,You rang M'Lord or from present days The IT Crowd. These are funny.About Matt and his character. Not sure who he is playing here himselfor Joey. Joey's character was already ruined in Joey season 2, but Isee David Crane try to be more like George Lucas here. And at the endc'mon you have to be serious. Matt makes a move on the most ugly andstupid woman in the universe? A good advice to Matt: Abandon thesinking ship as long as he can get inside a rescue ship, but I thinkits already too late.

What can I say?

I have never had the urge to review any movie or television showbefore, but I felt I needed to with this one. I went into this showknowing nothing about it, a complete open mind. I did not know who wasin it, nor who directed it. All I can say is this is one of the worstprograms I have ever watched in my life. I cannot recall one movie ortelevision show, no matter how bad it was, that I did not continue towatch in its entirety just to see how it would end and what the writeror director had in mind. I could not do that with this program, I wasbored and uninterested from the very start of the first episode. Ifound no humor, no reality and nothing interesting or captivatingenough to keep me watching. And this is coming from someone who haswatched some of the worst movies and television shows out there, yetstill watched to the end. I never take any stock in critic's reviewsmyself, so go ahead and watch this to form your own opinion. Like Isaid, I have never reviewed, or even had the urge to, any movie orprogram before. I figured there are enough people with better opinionsand more time than me to review this stuff. After starting this, I feltI needed to say something. If you can make it past the first tenminutes and want to criticize me, you are welcome. I for one couldbarely make it past two minutes.
