| Storyline | An ex-con sets out to avenge his brothers death after they were double-crossed during a heist years ago. During his campaign, however, hes tracked by a veteran cop and an egocentric hit man. |
I like the Rock, and I believe that for all the substandard films he'sbeen in, I still believe we're yet to see his best. If all thewrestling stars that turned to movies had his charisma we'd have a lotmore good action movies out there. In pretty much everything I've seenhim in he's been the best thing in it, he's likable, assured, and he'sgot the muscles that made Arnie such a hit in the 80's. Generally I'llwatch anything he's in, so I rented faster, not really expecting much. What I got was a lot more than I expected. Make no mistake, this is aballs out action movie, but it actually has a brain (and more than alittle heart) to it, even though Dwayne is little more than mute formost of the movie. What it does is set up three separate characters, the Driver, the Cop and the Killer, and then (as well as kicking agreat deal of ass) invests a great deal of time in their characters, fleshing them out much more than your usual action movie would. What'smore, it's action sequences are brilliant, the whole thing looksfantastic, and there are brilliant performances and a few surprisesthroughout from the supporting cast. It's not Shakespeare, but it is a great addition to the action genreand I'd recommend it to anyone who likes their action films to have abit of a heartbeat as well. Well scripted, well acted, well shot, and alikable cast. What more do you want?
SLIDER'S REVIEW: Faster is an Action Crime & Drama film Directed by George Tillman Jr.(same guy that brought us Barbershop & Notorious). This film is aboutan ex con who comes out of prison and goes on a murdering spree toavenge his brother's death after being double crossed during a heistyears ago. It's starring Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, CarlaGugino, Moon Bloodgood, Oliver Jackson-Cohen & Maggie Grace.#FACT: The Director has never made a film in this Genre before. This is another film that had the potential of being even greater thanit already was but then gets let down by the muddled up screen play &faint dialogue. The script itself is very well thought out it just getsa little complicated near to the end. The best thing about it was thetwist of who did it.My complaint: This is meant to be an action film so whys there not muchphysical action going on? Shooting guns & car chases are not enough tocarry a film like this. The scenes where I expected a blowout fightscene I got like 10% of that. (Put down the guns and use your fists, break something without using bullets, for once).Dwayne Johnson takes lead role and captures the role of the "Driver"very well. He was cooking something dark when he put this one together(looks like he's left the Disney films for a while). Many ex wrestlerhave tried their hand in acting but don't do very well, The Rockhowever is an exception. (If you smell OK I won't do it) He looks likea killing machine with that mean looking handgun. His emotionsdisplayed are heartfelt and believable I could tell he put a lot intothis character. Haven't praised him I must complain when I say We canall see he's extremely fit with his physique so, why does he walkaround in the film looking like a human robot. To put it plain andsimple he just wasn't physical enough. (Did he forget he used to be awrestler?) I remember Dwayne Johnson in Walking Tall, 2004. I thinkthat was one his best films because it showed his all-round abilitiesof being an action man.I didn't like the character of the "Killer" (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) hejust wasn't right for the job. He should have been playing someone'ssidekick. He's an average actor. The "Cop" (Billy Bob Thornton) does agreat job as a man of the law. He was great to watch on screen. #Overall: Good Story with Teasing Entertainment.
Not bad... Rock is all pumped up and pumps bodies full of lead. The gun he shoots is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan firing 454 Casull. At close range, it would literally blow a human head into two, not just a big hole. The big dual finale where Ferrari F430 goes head on with Chevelle SS is not in the movie (but was in the trailer) which is dissapointing. I smell a sequel when Rock will finally clean out the Eurotrash hitman and the CI chick who rat him out.
(Synopsis) After serving 10 years in prison for bank robbery, Driver(Dwayne Johnson) has only one mission in life, to avenge the murder ofhis older brother who was killed when they were double-crossed afterthe heist. Now a free man with the names and addresses in hand, thereis nothing on earth that can stop him from killing all of them. However, two people are in the hunt to stop him, veteran cop (Billy BobThornton) only days from retiring, and a young hit man (OliverJackson-Cohen), both on Driver's trail. The race is on, and there canbe only one winner.(My Comment) The story is simple and straight to the point, Driverwants revenge. Driver gets out of prison after 10 years, and he startshunting down the criminals who were responsible for killing hisbrother. However, things get complicated when a hit man comes afterhim. Not only does he have to avoid the cops, but now he is also atarget. Physically, the Rock is imposing in this film, but he onlyspeaks about 2 dozen words in the whole movie. The Rock does not havemuch dialog, but his tough mannerisms and cold blooded killer facialexpressions are enough. Billy Bob Thornton's performance as the sleazycop is excellent. If you want to see an action packed revenge flick, this is a good one to see. (CBS Films, Run Time 1:35, Rated R)(8/10)
Ah, where to begin? I'm not into ultra-violent films, but I think thestory had potential and the execution was good, Dwayne Johnson is anintimidating presence and it's perfect for this kind of "macho, killingmachine with a heart" role, as is Billy Bob Thornton as a hard-a**junkie cop.Nevertheless, my main problem with this movie is that I felt like theycheated to the audience bending the rules a little too much, speciallyat the ending, which of course I won't reveal. I know that this kind ofmovie requires a good amount of suspension of disbelief, but it must beat least somewhat realistic in terms of the hero's survival (you'llknow what I mean when/if you watch it).
George Tillman Jr., whose previous directorial efforts include Men ofHonor and Notorious, has constructed a serious and violent drama in hismost recent film Faster. Dwayne Johnson, who stars as the terriblynamed Driver, provides a somber and brutal performance. Driver, recently released from a 10 year prison sentence, is motivated byrevenge against the individuals whom murdered his brother. Johnson'sability to wear Driver's scars, literally and figuratively, propels thecharacter into more than just a soulless murderer. Billy Bob Thornton,so-so as the drug addicted Detective named The Cop (yes, that's whathe's named), . It's not a memorable performance, but serviceable.Oliver Jackson-Cohen is very good as The Killer, an intense contractkiller who takes pride in what he does and his job very, VERYseriously. However, I don't think his character added anything to themovie and was more of a wasted plot line. The rest of cast is made ofCarla Gugino as Detective Cicero; Maggie Grace as Lily, anothercharacter that seemed rather useless; and Moon Bloodgood, lookingrather haggard as Marina.Having previously appeared in family films like The Tooth Fairy and TheGame Plan, and action flicks like The Rundown and Walking Tall, Fasterwas a chance for Johnson to widen his appeal. Although it's not quitethe action film, there are a few intense moments. It's those momentsthat I would have rather seen the film build upon. Hollywood hasn't hadmany action heroes since the early 1990s; however Johnson, along withJason Statham, seems positioned to take over the action hero roll.Faster should have been a golden opportunity to cash in on that roll,as well as Dwayne Johnson's likability. Instead it went the moredramatic approach, providing Johnson with very little dialog. Themajority of Johnson's screen time was used on showing his hatred, angstand pain in his facial expressions. I realize that there is a large fanbase that finds Dwayne Johnson attractive, but to limit his voice is todo him a disservice. Johnson is extremely talented, and when he's ableto deliver lines he does so convincingly. I followed Johnson, as theRock, for many years in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) thereweren't many before or after him that could fire up the crowd using themicrophone.Faster wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either; it falls in themiddle. I believe if you are going to use a title like Faster, then themovie should be filled with action. Instead we're given plot lines thatended up going nowhere. In the end we're given useless filler, and poorpacing; leaving a need for the movie to move FASTER.Grade: movie  C (Dwayne Johnson gets a B) Age appropriate: 18+ (violence, mild profanity, drug use) Visit our site at www.twodudereview.com
This review is from: Faster [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Great movie, alway been a fan of the Rock and Billy Bob Thorton! Fast cars, nice guns and lots of action!
This is a little gem of a movie, This is what Dwayne Johnson aka TheRock should be making in his film career, more action, just like one ofhis first action movie... Welcome to the jungle (which it was called inAustralia). The story line is simple enough, A man is release from prison, and thefirst thing on his mind is revenge on those that put him there. DwayneJohnson plays this roll really well, not with dialog, but with themanner he presents him self thru out the movie... a man determined, angry and in no mood for fun and games. I don't think i saw him smileonce thru out the movie. Billy Bob Thorton gives us a good performanceabout a cop struggling thru his everyday life, and everyone else in themovie did there part well. This is a good movie, and any fan of Dwayne Johnson (The Rock, which iswhat i will always call him by), or fans of action/revenge kind offilms, should go watch. Good acting, good script (simple but effective), good directing. 8/10
This movie is very fast paced and filled to the brim with action and suspense. It's almost like a classic Grindhouse film. Dwayne Johnson is back with a vengeance. Known only as Driver, he is released from prison after 10 years and goes on a shooting rampage to avenge the death of his brother. Meanwhile, he is being hunted too by a cop and a hitman. I highly recommend you go FASTER!!!
After directing "Soul Food" and "Men of Honor," director George TillmanJr. gets down and dirty with the gritty Dwayne Johnson morality play"Faster" co-starring Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino, Tom Berenger, and Mike Epps. This brawny, bullet-riddled, action-oriented melodramaabout an avenging ex-con out to payback the dastardly dudes whomurdered his brother qualifies as a refreshingly straightforwardshoot'em up. Usually, most testosterone-laced, hard-boiled thrillersdon't generate sufficient momentum until the first 30-minutes haveelapsed. Happily, "Faster" wastes no time getting out of the startinggate. This violent, swiftly-paced actioneer literally blasts off! Ofcourse, characters must be crafted and predicaments developed beforethe hero and the villains can clash. Indeed, Tillman and "UncommonValor" scribes Tony and Joe create memorable characters and chart themon a collision course that lacks over-the-top, computer-generatedspecial effects. You won't see any fireball explosions erupt in"Faster." Moreover Johnson doesn't let his dialogue get in the way ashe tracks down his brother's killers and puts them out of his misery. The pared-down pyrotechnics and Johnson's fulminating presence make"Faster" a rewarding actioneer. Inexorable best describes the tenacitywith which Johnson approaches his mission of vengeance in this lean butexciting 95-minute movie. Shrewdly, Tillman surrounds the former WWFchamp with a colorful cast of characters, and the Gaytons deliverenough twists and turns to keep audiences guessing. Our hulking herolooks tough enough to triumph over the indestructible killers in eitherJoel & Ethan Cohen's "No Country for Old Men" or the murderous cyborgsin James Cameron's "Terminator" movies. Altogether, "Faster" ranks asJohnson's best tough-guy thriller to date with an out-of-the-blueending that is superbly foreshadowed from the start."Faster" unfolds with Driver (Dwayne Johnson of "The Tooth Fairy")itching to get out of Murdock prison now that he has served his 10-yearstretch. During his decade behind bars, our fearless protagonistacquired a reputation for taking names and kicking ass. Basically, herefused to bow to the wishes of anybody or any gang while he occupiedthe big house. Literally, Driver came in fighting and left that way. Hesports a tattoo on his beefy left forearm that bears testament to hislethal pugnacity. The deadly statistics inked on his skin represent themany ill-fated adversaries who failed to subdue him in close-quarterscombat. No sooner has the Warden (Tom Berenger of "Sniper") givenDriver his usual lecture than our hero asks for the door. The minutethat Driver exits the penitentiary, he starts running. Eventually, heends up in a lonely automobile junkyard. He whips the tarp off asouped-up, 1970's era muscle car, a black SS Chevelle with two parallelwhite racing stripes running from hood to trunk. The Chevelle resemblesthe vehicle that Kurt Russell drove in "Death Proof." Driver fishes abulky snub-nosed revolver out the glove compartment and careens off insearch of his first victim.Gradually, we learn that Driver had no previous criminal record beforehe drove the getaway car for his brother in a Bakersfield, California, robbery. Driver, his brother, and their two accomplices managed toevade the police after the hold-up. Unfortunately, another gang ofcriminals ambushed and killed all of them. Driver watched in horror asa cold-blooded ruffian slashed his brother's neck with a huge knife.Miraculously, however, Driver survived a bullet in the head when theslug ricocheted off his skull, caromed around the curvature of his headand came out his cheek. Driver served his ten-year stretch and staredat a photograph of his brother throughout those years. Meantime, hepaid a shady private investigator, Roy Grone (Mike Epps of ""All AboutThe Benjamins"), for the Chevelle as well as the names of the men thatwiped out his brother's gang. A bespectacled telemarketer, PatrickAshton (Courtney Gains of "Sweet Home Alabama"), is our hero's firstvictim. Driver bursts into the office where the telemarketer works andputs a bullet in his head without warning. Naturally, the local policeinvestigate the shooting, with Detective Cicero (sexy Carla Gugino of"Sin City") as the lead cop on the case. Surveillance cameras at thescene recorded Driver plugging the telemarketer in the head. Cicero issurprised when another detective, Slade Humphries (Billy Bob Thorntonof "Bad Santa"), shows up to assist her. We learn that Humphries hastwo weeks left as a detective before he retires with full benefits. Heis an unshaven, chain-smoking cop who wears cowboy boots, abusesheroin, and married one of his criminal informants. Slade's son Tommyplays Little League baseball, but he has no talent for the game.Earlier, Humphries was a member of an L.A.P.D. crash team, but he hassince fallen on hard times. The last major character to enter the frayis Killer, a handsome Englishman who performs hits for a dollar-a-job.A software millionaire, Killer (Mel Gibson look-alike OliverJackson-Cohen of "Going the Distance") tools around in a sleek sportscar and dates a groovy gal, Lily (Maggie Grace of "Taken"), who likesto go shooting with him. Killer managed to overcome a case of childhoodpolio and has sculpted a mean body. An unknown individual has hiredKiller, and Killer plans to ice Driver, hang up his gun, and wed hissweetheart.Essentially, "Faster" is a bare-bones but surprise-laden crime thrillerfrom fade-in to fade-out. Driver never dawdles when he locates hisbrother's murderers. He marches up to them and blows them away. When heencounters the sharp-shooting Killer, our hero refuses to seek cover.Instead, Driver aggressively charges the Englishman and blasts away athim without fear. Tillman stages "Faster" with similar blunt forceurgency. One of the best scenes depicts Driver eluding two policecruisers during a high speed race through Bakersfield by drivingbackwards the entire time! Overall, "Faster" lives up both to its nameand its R-rating but never wears out its welcome.
Dwayne "The rock" Johnson stars in "faster" A movie about a fresh outof prison man bent on killing the people related his brothersmurder.Throughout the film you could tell what would happen next, because there are so many elements this movie has borrowed from otherfilms.Though this film had good action sequences, and a decentsoundtrack, there was not that much character development to get all ofyour heart with the story. The protagonist, who we as the audience, should know the most about, is a perfect example of this. There is areally good part of the movie towards the end(you will know it when yousee it).In the end this is a great movie to RENT, especially for fansof "the rock"
i've always loved the Rock. we watched him constantly during his days in the ring and enjoyed him so much. and couldn't have enjoyed this movie more. one of the things about this movie that was wonderful was it had a clean spare look to it without feeling stripped down, like a cheap budget movie would. the driving scenes were incredible and the rock always looks great. love him, keep em coming. and yes, he is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. makes them little whoosie hollywood boys look real bad and like the pansies they are.
So I decided this evening that I was in the mood for some mindless action - not typically the genre I usually watch. But regardless, I decided to watch "Faster." I knew very early on that this was definitely a mindless action movie and not to have very high expectations. When the movie's main characters have names such as "Driver," "Cop," and "Killer," you don't really expect much. But about an hour into the movie, I was completely caught off guard. The last thirty minutes or so of the movie are surprisingly and uncommonly powerful. I wouldn't nominate this film for any awards for its acting or its story, but for what the movie had me believing it was, the last third of the movie was quite emotional. I will admit that I was even a little choked up and almost teary during some scenes. But I have a tendency to really analyze those types of scenarios on a personal, and almost empathic level, so many of you may not have the same experience. But regardless, it was a fairly decent revenge flick with plenty to keep you entertained.
This review is from: Faster (DVD) Dwayne is way to mean to get in front of!He be the man!The man to remove your head...I would love to talk about it, but it caught me offguard and I want that for you too!
I only rented it because of Dwayne-the-rock-Johnson but I have to sayit boasts a pretty impressive supporting cast including Billy BobThorton and Carla Gugino as cops, Moon Bloodgood, Maggie Grace, AdewaleAgbaje among others. The basic premise of the film is this, a guysimply known as Driver (played by the Rock) is released from prisonafter serving ten years for an armed robbery that took the life of hisbrother, upon his release he sets out to exact revenge on the rivalgang that double-crossed them on that day. One by one he begins to takeout his targets with the cops in hot pursuit and an eccentric hit manon his tail as well. The Rock is his usual self, effective and on pointbut the movie just drags on after a while and not even hiseffectiveness can save that. I have to say this though, the guy whoplays the hit-man needs to go back to acting school or Britainwhichever is cheaper. Good looks it not everything.
FASTER Â TRASH IT ( D ) Faster is dreadful, its fake unreal and not forGod Damn boring. I was bored to death while watching it. Everything washappening in such a delusional way that I couldn't believe that suchbig names can do a trash movie like this. In the whole Dwayne Johnsonwas impersonating Arnold's Terminator's Avatar. At one point it seemedlike an audition for Human Robot for future terminator movies. CarlaGugino, Jennifer Carpenter, Billy Bob Thornton and Moon Bloodgood werewasted. Unnecessary scenes and characters made it a horrible 1 hr & 45mints of my life. The only thing smoking Hot in FASTER was Maggie Grace& Brit Lad Oliver Jackson-Cohen. They were smoking hot together youjust want them to see IF YOU SEEK AMY together. Sadly it didn't happen!Anyways D rating is for these two otherwise it would have been F.
This review is from: Faster (DVD) This movie is amazing! I love how fast it got to me, also! My wife got me this movie for my birthday and have been watching it since. It came to me in perfect condition.
"Faster" treads fiercely and also gives way to a certain poeticlicense. Call it a simplistic, unmuddled revenge film that's affectedby savage grace. It's reminiscent of iconic westerns about a loner withdemons in his closet related to a past traumatic event that's now comefull circle. The look and feel carries a tone from the distinctive tint to some ofthe unpolished locales and shady characters. The pace is set withjarring, off-center camera angles, to being more of a slow burn withsubtle panning to get its message home. This is truly a basic actionfilm that exaggerates as it does inject plausibility. The mechanicshelp drive this forward, because without 'em there wouldn't have beenmuch to see that already hasn't been done before. The theme is as simple as a silent type (Dwayne Johnson) fresh outtalockup with strict purpose: to systematically hunt down targets thatare revealed in flashbacks. A few hazards are thrown his way, but withhis height, bulk and fearlessness there's not much to stop thejuggernaut from rolling because he's, you guessed, "faster." He's gotan old school vibe: muscle car, six shooter and scars to show hisbattle wounds. A Batman type (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), that isn't afraidto break the law, gets hot on his trail to stop him with his new schoolgadgets and playboy looks, as well as the confident detective (CarlaGugino) and her unwanted shady looking new partner (Billy Bob Thornton)with a continual scruff and look of "user" on his face. For the most part, the characters aren't hardened stone throughout asthe filmmakers show evolution from their intended course. One could saythey "grew" from the initial outset, while others, like in real life, remain unchanged. Dwayne Johnson's character is a man's man who istalented behind the wheel and when needed for action is unflinching. Hepurposely expunges nearly all emotion but takes on the role ofintimidation with his pulsating neck and commanding biceps ofauthority. The movie has testosterone flowing through its veins with point blankexecutions and car chases. There are layers but nothing that would peelback the onion like a strict drama. This has some artistic,never-used-in-real-life dialogue sprinkled about that feels forced tofit in some areas, like they came from a practiced writer instead offrom different people with different personalities. "Faster" is aneffective cinematic experience that balances grit and candidentertainment while still pausing to smell the flowers that might havegotten some petrol and blood on their pedals. I was definitely entertained by the movie, but I was somewhat set back due to entitlement of the film. When you think faster you think high speed chases, adrenaline rush, mayhem etc... but this movie actually goes by at a much slower pace. I'm thrilled to see Dwayne back in action movies, and he did a great job of tapping back into his wrestling persona with a strong presence. However I think it was a mix of poor script writing and the director that bring down the excitement; resulting in decent action flick, rather than a great action flick. Lets talk alternate ending... the movie throughout never really has a climax, but the original ending that was cut due to audiences displeasure was a disappointment. It would have been an awesome ending to a solid 80's tradition action film.Let's talk car chases... or lack thereof. There are a couple solid scenes, but again I think it was both poor writing and directing that give it a negative blow. I love the muscle and exotic cars they have in the movie, but it would have been better if they pushed the envelope and punctuated the `Faster' title. All and all the movie does what it's supposed to do, it's definitely worth a rental, but you might not feel its money well spent for $20.
This review is from: Faster (DVD) Imagine being completely devastated (mind, body, and soul) and then having the ultimate opportunity to step up to the plate and start avenging. Well, this movie takes that step and does so while still expanding on the story and creating a few additional interesting characters to keep the film very interesting. I do not want to spoil any of it, except to say that once the main character is let loose and decides on a direction, he literally starts running and that's what I like to see happen - someone who takes charge of the situation and obliterates his enemies. That makes for some great movie time.
