| Storyline | Garden gnomes Gnomeo (voice of McAvoy) and Juliet (voice of Blunt) have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness? |
My husband and I took both of our boys (4 and 6) a few weeks ago to seethis movie. I thought it was cute, my husband thought it was okay...but the boys loved it! I must admit that I was expecting to be boredwithin 5 minutes but I was not. Yes the target of the film is for ayoung audience but the writers/animators put a spin on it to whereadults could enjoy as well. Yes - this is a tale based on Shakespeare's"Romeo and Juliet"... in no way do I think it ruined the originalstory. People are so dramatic when they say such things. Children willnot know the Romeo and Juliet story in as much detail, most that watchwill not know the story at all, as the adults audience does. The kidsare watching the film because of it being a fun and animated film...not because of it be an adaption of Romeo and Juliet. It is definitelya kid's movie. However, it is not a movie that I would run out and seein the theater again or buy a copy of the DVD.... but if the kids wantit for their DVD collection... then that is another story.
"Is his... big and pointy?" asked the frog. "A squirrel dropped hisnuts." said Juliet. The frog added "The nuts where the size ofboulders." How does this pass as entertainment for our children, I wasdisappointed to say the least - I guess these days pedophiles arewriting the family movies. Why did I say pedophile? Simply cause thedouble meaning jokes are too disgusting, but mostly cause the jokes area sick attempt to make todays children as perverted as the people whowrote Gnomeo and Juliet. If a pedophile was in your garden, talkingdirty to your child, you would ask him to leave. Without thebelow-the-belt jokes the movie would have been okay I suppose, althoughI'm not a big fan garden gnomes. Furthermore, Gnomeo and Juliet is apale copy of Toy Story, no where near as good.
You know how SOME animated films are enjoyable for the little kids in the audience but still keeps some elements in the film to also entertain the adults too? "Gnomeo & Juliet" absolutely, unequivocally, definitely, comprehensively, assuredly, exhaustively, concretely is NOT one of those. Even if you know the Shakespeare story of the Montagues versus the Capulets and how Romeo and Juliet's forbidden love ended tragically, the different ending on this latest animated re-interpretation won't entertain you as an adult. Jason Statham is one of the familiar voices, whereas James McAvoy (Gnomeo) and Emily Blunt (Juliet) are not so familiar. The film has many Shakespeare references beyond the immediate theme, and other voices familiar include Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, and Patrick Stewart. Elton John being the executive producer, it then is no surprise the soundtrack has several Elton John songs. Hulk Hogan's voice is given to a lawn mower, Ozzie Osbourne is the voice for a fawn (young forest ruminant), and a handful of other Hollywood notables lend their voices as well - yet it doesn't redeem this film beyond the juvenile marketing theme throughout the picture. On the other hand, on opening weekend (mid Feb 2011) the box office take was over $25M, and by June 2011 this movie had earned $99.7M at the box office. Now it has been released on DVD. If you have kids, some of the really younger under 4 children may be frightened by the lawnmower race and then later in the show there is an even more intimidating "Terrafirminator" that at first is thought to have killed two of the gnomes in a rip roaring path of wanton destruction. The rest of the film is like caramel topping on ice cream, with honey added. Touchstone, Rocket, and Miramax are the companies behind this animated piece, but Walt Disney wouldn't have changed a thing. Look for two elements most people miss - the laptop computer is not an Apple, but has a banana logo on it; and, on the bus that goes by the bus stop in front of Gnomeo and the flamingo character, the placard on the side of the bus says "Stratford-Upon-Avon" which was the home of William Shakespeare (the famous playwright whose story this film is based on). I can only recommend this film if you have at least one child in the home under 10 years old. As an adult, you aren't given anything to enjoy. The hidden humor and suggestive tones just don't exist in this film. Hopefully the movie coming out July 29, 2011 titled, "The Smurfs" will offer more to the adults who try to sit and watch animated movies with their kids and grandkids.
My teenage daughter and I have just returned from seeing this film andwe both enjoyed it very much. In my opinion, the film was not justaimed at children; I remember all the Elton John songs from theoriginal!(and no, I'm NOT a die-hard fan!) The Elton John songs wereused very appropriately. I particularly liked the song "Saturdaynight's the night for fighting" used for the drag race! It was fun topick out the Shakespeare references; the removal firm was Rosancranzand Guildenstern, for instance. In other cases there were misquotes;for instance "a rose by any other name" - "a weed by any other name" Agood bit of fun!
It all begins with a fued between the Red gnomes and the Blue gnomes. For some reason they don't like each other. And then one night when Juliet the Red and Gnomeo the Blue make seprate plans to attack each others forces they actually meet up. Juliet is looking for an orchid flower in the Blue garden while Gnomeo is planning a secret attack on Red garden. Then later in the movie they find lost Gnomeo in the park and the Shakesphere statue starts to talk. I would highly reccomend this to children and adults to all ages.
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (Amazon Instant Video) Our son also said that Tron is his favorite, but this one comes right after. His critical father liked it too. Enjoy!
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (Amazon Instant Video) I was so excited when I first saw the previews for this movie. A little disappointed honestly. It's a cute movie with a few funny parts but I will not be purchasing this one for my son's DVD collection any time soon!
Really. Just watching the trailer and I went "oh... wow... that's goingto be a dumb movie". I was hoping to see Rangle (or whatever it'scalled) but my parents chose this one instead. My dad claims that heread a lot of positive reviews. Well...The movie was very entertaining to say the least. However, the 3d wasjust a waste of money. Nothing really stood out with the glasses on.The plot was okay, but there were a lot of really bad jokes, not justinappropriate, but just bad. Not funny. Corny. When the two maincharacters possibly "died" and we zoom into the tower mess, a handcomes out, and..... 'cue dramatic music' it's the almost naked guy!Woop. Lol. No.Rated 6/10 because it WAS entertaining, and I found the "Banana" laptop(pun to Apple computers, which most CGI is created on these days)funny. But other than that... meh...
This review is from: Gnomeo and Juliet (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) i thought it needed to be just done just alitte better than it was but other than that it was ok i just .
I ordered this on a whim for the kids for a family night not long after it first came out. I love how Elton John's music is incorporated throughout, even in the background. I also really appreciated the small tributes to Shakespeare, like the Rosencratz and Gilderstein moving van. Even my thirteen-year-old enjoyed it, which really surprised us. Anyway, it's a fun little diddy, not to be taken too seriously but to be just enjoyed. The cast is star-studded, from James McAvoy to Michael Caine. I would recommend this to any family for a fun family night in.
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) We love gnomes in our household, and were very excited to watch this movie. It has a pretty innocent plot, which makes it suitable for all ages. It's fun and colorful. What more can you ask for?
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (Amazon Instant Video) My kids and I love this movie! It's great for parents dreading having to watch another cartoon. Has humor perfect for adults and children.
When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought it was the worstidea ever. Making a movie based off a pun seem pretty bad. To mysurprise it was somewhat entertaining. It wasn't "Toy Story" or "How totrain your dragon" good, but it didn't make me want gauge out my eyes. The animation is good and the movie has a crap ton of well known actorsin it like Jim Cummings, Michael Caine, Emily Blunt, and even HulkHogan. The movie would definitely entertain kids and will get theoccasional smirk from the adult, but its not a movie you can reallywatch again. After all, the premise for the movie is pretty stupid, butit did take a dumb premise and did what it could with it. There a fewthings that did bother me which is more of a personal thing likequestioning how no notice a crap ton of gnomes have a war especiallyregarding the last seem where it seemed that even a deaf person wouldnotice whats going on. But I digress. Its not a terrible movie, but itsnot a really good one
A forbidden love between Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (EmilyBlunt). 2 feuding garden gnome families living side by side had anunusual event occur. The kids of the leaders of each family fell inlove. The only thing Gnomeo and Juliet ever wanted was to be with eachother every waking moment. Based on Shakespeare's play, Romeo andJuliet. It's rare that in this day and age a movie for kids are madewithout any adult sub topics that the kids wouldn't understand. Thismovie from head to toe is a enjoyable delight for 12 and under but Ithink the older kids like me will get a kick out of it too. I wouldn'texpect anything less from the greatest place on earth people. Thank YouDisney. 4 out of 5 stars.
I took my 4 year old son. I vaguely remember seeing a preview of this months ago and was unimpressed. But since my 7 year old son was at a sleep over tonight, I took my younger son. I had very low expectations and was relieved to see the theater sold beer.Being a young teen in the mid-70s I loved Elton John - especially Elton John's Greatest Hits album. So when his songs started playing right off the bat I was hooked. In the closing credits I saw that Elton was an executive producer or something and there were several hints of Elton through out them show. The movie was very cute and enjoyable, even for a 40 something year old man. I enjoyed my son's laughter as much as the movie. Its the first movie in a few years where the audiences, including me, applauded at the end of the show. I don't know that I'd take a date to this movie or go as an adult without children, but if you have kids you'll get an unexpected kick from it. I also have an urge now to go out and purchase a variety of gnomes for my back yard...Enjoy.Jim
As soon as I saw the poster and title I thought, oh here we go, takingan old story, in this case from William Shakespeare and trying anothermethod to modernise it, and this way looked a bit ridiculous, but Itried it nonetheless, from director Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2). Basicallythere are two neighbour gardens full of gnomes, they are rival groupsand families, the red gnomes and blue gnomes, and they do not get on atall. Gnomeo (James McAvoy) is the young male blue gnome of his gardenliving with mother Lady Bluebury (Dame Maggie Smith), and Juliet (EmilyBlunt) is the young female red gnome of her garden living with fatherLord Redbrick (Sir Michael Caine). One night the two characters meeteach other, instantly smitten with each other, and continue havingsecret trips to be together at night, despite knowing the blue and redgnome rivalry around them. It is when Gnomeo accidentally lets Tybalt(Jason Statham) be cracked and seemingly killed that the war reallyignites between the blue and red gnomes. In the end when it looks likethe star crossed lovers are finished and the two tribes of gnomes puttheir differences aside, the ending is not tragic, Gnomeo and Julietsurvive and live happily ever after. Also starring Ashley Jensen asNanette, Sir Patrick Stewart as Bill Shakespeare, Matt Lucas as Benny,Julie Walters as Miss Montague, Stephen Merchant as Paris, OzzyOsbourne as Fawn, Richard Wilson as Mr. Capulet, Jim Cummings asFeatherstone, Hulk Hogan as Terrafirminator Voice Over and Dolly Partonas Dolly Gnome. The voice casting is all really good, some greatBritish talents, the inclusion of memorable Sir Elton John songs isreasonably good, and the animation is alright most of the time, it maynot be the most original story and the ending is obviously changed forthe child audience, an animated romantic fantasy to see at least once.Okay!
We read lots of reviews and we got the impression this movie was for three year olds. We watched it anyway. THIS MOVIE IS NOT FOR THREE YEAR OLDS. Of course, they would enjoy it, but the point is that a twelve year old could still like it(me). My sister and I really enjoyed this movie and it was funny and creative. They are smart with words and imagery.
I watched this movie today with my kids ages 3, 6, and 12. They allloved it. There were a few spots when it dragged a little but all inall the "cuteness" of these garden gnomes sold me. There is no globalsolution offered here just Gnomeo and Julie falling in love. A greatafternoon out with your kids. I thought the animation was spectacularand the story light and fun. There are little asides here and therepaying tribute to Shakespeare. It is very well-suited to have PatrickStewart play the bard himself. It's not the best movie but the visualsand music are stunning. It will hold your kids' attention for over anhour, what more could you ask for in a movie? I am really surprisedthis movie hasn't received higher ratings. I saw it as an 8/10. I thinkthis is a great one for kids and the pop culture jokes here and therewill keep the parents' interest. Don't go into it expecting more oryou'll be disappointed. BUT, if that is your expectation, you'll have agreat time at a cute movie.
This review is from: Gnomeo and Juliet (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I thought this movie was such a fun spin on Romeo and Juliet. Even my kids (ages 7 and 3) really liked it. The music was great and put it this way....I'll probably never see another garden gnome again without thinking of this movie.
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) Good blend of story and humor, engaging characters, well cast voices and an imaginative interpretion of this Shakespere classic. The music of Elton John is used to good effect throughout. The humor definately has a British slant, but still travels well across the Atlantic. Viewing two or threee times reveals subtleties possibly missed on first viewing. Under-lying the fun and adventures, the story warns of conflict's futility and leaves you feeling a little wiser at the end.
