Yes it may be cheesy, yes it may be predictable. But it's a feel-goodfilm, as most musicals are. There are not many musicals that don't havea happy ending of some sort and boy this has the mother of happyendings. With quality songs and stunning choreography throughout, Grease is fullof style, culminating in the finale which as i said - is happy endingmode on speed. With two of the best songs - "You're the one that I want" and "we gotogether" back to back with some stunning choreography and a real senseof chemistry between the energetic players, the ending leaves youfeeling good - the happy gas is so strong it even makes the car flyinto the sunset at the end! It's a classic example of the feel-goodmusical, which is why people love it so much.
The movie version of "Grease" is the perfect summer movie, light, breezy, cheerful and maybe just a tad too squeeky clean for its'own good. The original Broadway show took place in 1972 and was the 10 year reunion of the class of Rydell High. The alumni do an extended sketch to show how they were in 1962. This concept neatly explains the advanced ages of the players. The movie played it as a straight teenage musical and the Pink Ladies and the Burger Palace Boys(the boy gang original name) were all portrayed by actors well into their twenties with the exception of Stockard Channing who was uncomfortably nearing 40.This explains why the critics originally were luke-warm or knocked the film.(The age problem) but the critics on Broadway wern't kind either-it was the audiences that loved it. The original show was also heavily laced with obscenities, mostly the f-bomb, which made perfect sense since the story was about a group of kids in their own little cliques who were trying to act tough and cool. The big joke was that beneath the thuggish and slutty behavior and potty mouths these wannabe juvenile delinquents were really nice-just adolescents starting to flex their wings. Another important difference between the original show was Rydell High was an inner-city midwestern school, and the movie version of the school was located somewhere in sunny California, probably Malibu. Each subsequent stage version of "Grease" has been sanitized like the movie and while that doesn't detract from the high energy fun it loses the high energy but grit of the original. The movie though was loaded with a slew of goodies--the peaches and cream beauty of Olivia Newton John, John Travolta in his prime and some well staged musical numbers including the "Born To Hand-Jive" prom number, "Beauty School Dropout" "Summer Nights" "We Go Together"(the original stage version of "We Go Together" was sexually explicit and you wouldn't believe what was going on during the refrain, Boogie Boogie,Booglia etc) and "Greased Lightnin" which surprisingly retains the racy lyrics from the 1972 show considering the almost simon-pure innocense of the rest of the movie.I am only pointing out the difference in tone and attitude of the original from the movie but I enjoyed the film in 1978 and I still enjoy it in 2006 but it is just not the same as it was in 1972 and wowed audiences on Broadway for over eight years. So this movie is still a great watch on a "Summer Night".
I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS MOVIE IS, IT IS THE BEST MUSICAL IN THE UNIVERSE. THE T BIRDS ARE HILIARIOUS, THE PINK LADIES ARE COOL AND HAVE ATTITUDE, AND THE CHEERLEADERS ARE PRATS, BUT I GUESS THEY ARE MEANT TO BE. GREASE IS SO COOL, YOU CAN HARDLY STOP SINGING THE SONGS WHEN YOU'VE SEEN IT. WE WATCHED IT WITH MY FRIENDS, AND WE COULDN'T STOP SINGING ALONG. A GREAT THING WITH ALL MUSICALS AND ESPECIALLY THIS ONE, IS THAT YOU CAN GET THE SONGS ON CD. WE DID THAT AT OUR YR 7 DISCO AND EVERYONE WAS DANCING TO IT, AND THAT WAS PRACTICALLY THE ONLY ONE WHERE EVERYONE DANCED AND NOBODY SAT OUT, APART FROM A FEW OTHERS. EVERYONE APART FROM A FEW DUMBOS LIKES THIS MOVIE. UNLIKE OTHER FILMS SET IN THAT TIME IT HAS GREAT POTENTIAL, AND THE ACTING IS BRILL. GO GREASE, IT'S THE BEST MUSICALL IN THE HISTORY OF CINEMA!!!!!!!!!
Greased Lightnin', Go greased Lightnin'. Ah, those summer nights. Oh Oh Honey. I'm hopelessly devoted to you. Grease is the word! Any of these lines sound familiar? You'd have to not have any 1970s spirit alive in you not to recognize them. Believe me, in 1978, this is what The Return of the King is doing to the earth right now. Travolta and Newton-John shook the world like a banana milkshake with their singing, dancing, acting, and performances in this one. No one slept in the late seventies, they listened to the music from this movie. In case you haven't seen the movie (believe me, you should) and don't know the story, here it is. The boys are mixing with the girls as they enter their last year in school. One pair is Sandy (Olivia) and Danny (John). Sandy is on the verge of popularity at school, but is a little shy. Danny and his boys are a big group who are in the race car buisness. Their car, Greased Lightning (that's the title for a song most people even today can't help but sing along to) is truly nothing more than a scrap of tin, but Danny is keen to make it win the upcoming race. Throughout the year, they'll go to a high school dance, trash the local restraunt, and have some wild experiences until the year ends. Final result: can't tell you, but go see it to find out. Even though the movie is some times slow moving, it rarely is. The overall greatness of this movie makes you forget about it. I guarantee, Grease is just one of those movies worth seeing over and over all your life.
Probably the greatest musical of all time, Grease (starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta) shows us the fun of its generation. With the acting, the story, and the flawless music featured in Grease, it's no wonder why it has gotten such critical acclaim. When Danny Zuko (Travolta) and Sandy Olsen (Newton-John) fall in love over the summer, Sandy delivers the news that she'd be leaving back to her home in Australia. But as the new year at Rydell begins, Sandy has a change of plans and stays in the U.S. Once re-united with Danny (thanks to Rizzo, played by Stockard Channing), Sandy is delighted to once again see Danny, and Danny is just as overwhelmed. But he believes that his masculinity and his leadership is being questioned when he has trouble expressing his love for Sandy in front of the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies, so he decides to play it cool - which would end up in Sandy becoming confused and seeing Danny in a different way, yet she remains in love with him. But eventually, things do work out between Sandy, Danny, the Pink Ladies, and the T-Birds - this movie is packed with great acting, not to mention the great songs featured in it.Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta shocked viewers everywhere when they broke out into song. Catchy songs such as "Greased Lightning" (sung by John Travolta), "Summer Nights" (sung by Olivia and John), and "You're The One That I Want" (sung by Olivia and John) - which is the signature song of the movie, became instant national hits. Olivia's solo song "Hopelessly Devoted To You" shows how much of an angel she is, pouring out her sweet voice to beautiful lyrics. This movie was well excecuted. It's a legend of its own time. This is a must-see, and of course, a must-have for any lover of great movies.
If you had to describe this movie in one word it would have to be -fun! There are flaws in the movie but I wouldn't change it one bit! Myfavorite movies are the godfather part 1 and 2, Casablanca, some likeit hot, Chinatown, amercian history x, just to name a few, and some howgrease makes it on the list, I guess growing up on this movie its sohard not to watch every year. ONJ and john travolta are in fine formand are perfect together, the music and dancing (for the most part) aregreat. Grease will always be the word, this movie is fun fun fun! Ihope they NEVER remake this because its so good! Defiently see it igive - 10/10
I won't go into the plot here, because, let's face it, if you haven't seen Grease by now, you probably won't ever see it. And you are missing out on a really fun film. That is the secret to this movie's popularity. It's just plain fun! It doesn't have a really great script, none of the performancies (with the exception of Stockard Channing) is anything above run-of-the-mill, but it's got a lot of great, catchy songs, a very likeable cast, and is just a treat to watch again and again. I was disappointed by this DVD release though, because it's exactly the same as the laser disc, only smaller and you don't have to turn it over. The cast interviews at the end are four years old, and this is really just a delayed release of the 20th Anniversary Edition on DVD. And what fan of Grease needs a cheap, paper booklet of song lyrics? Believe me, we know them all by heart. Truly the most profitable and one of the most popular musicals ever made deserves a better DVD package. The fans certainly deserve it too, having waited so long for this. Boo! to Paramount for, apparently, wanting to wait and pick our pockets again some time down the road when they release the two-disc set with all the extras this movie should have. At least it's in widescreen, which is a totally different viewing experience for anyone who hasn't seen it letterboxed or on the big screen yet. The musical numbers have a much larger scope, with dancers and other action on the sides that had previously been cut off. You will be surprised how many previously unseen guys are on the bleachers with Danny and the gang for "Summer Nights". And to anyone who is planning to buy the full-frame DVD--shame on you! You are truly missing out.
Good movie. I have loved it since it first came out. Yhe leather jacket cover gives it even more appeal and makes it go right along with the movie itself.
GREASE is the word? I don't think so! One of the most overrated (yet profitable) movie musicals ever made. The plot and script are thin, the direction is VERY bad, the characters look way too old for their parts (high schoolers?), and while some of the musical numbers and songs are memorable (SUMMER NIGHTS & GREASE LIGHTNING), they too are terribly directed. Notice the singing of the characters in the film are all out of synch when anyone is performing. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John play the leads of two love struck high schoolers (Danny and Sandy) who have previously met at the beach during summer vacation. They fall in love, but when summer ends they part ways thinking they'll meet intermittantly because Sandy is vacationing from Austraila. However, when school begins, she unexpectedly stays in the states and begins school where Danny goes. When they meet again Danny can't show his true feelings to her. Also, he takes on his alter ego, opposite of the romantic beach boy, because he is part of a greaser gang (The T-Birds). It wouldn't be "Cool" to be love with a "Sandra Dee" type... that is, a girl who doesn't "put out". (The guys think they are a bunch of toughs, but in reality are a bunch of wimps in disguise i.e. Micheal Tucci as Sonny.) Then there is the Pink Ladies, the mirrored opposite sex equivalent of the "T-Birds" who are equally puzzling because you have two cool chicks (Stockard Channing as Rizzo and Dinah Manoff as Marty) and the rest seemingly act like Sandy (most notable.. Didi Conn as Frenchie). The rest of the story deals with Danny trying to win back Sandy when he realises he wants to be with her despite of what the other greasers think and still maintain his tough greaser image. So, he tries out for different sports to be a jock to impress her etc...Also, here are minor subplots such as the T-Birds competing against another gang (or car club). The film scores only because of the supporting cast and cameos with the likes of the late Eve Arden as Principal McGee, Sid Ceasar as Coach Calhoun, Alice Ghostly, Frankie Avalon, Sha Na Na, Ed Byrnes, and the late Joan Blondell. Movie gets worse with each subsequent screenings because the main characters are all mean spirited and annoying (especially Jeff Conaway as Kenickie). Note: look for Michael Biehn (TERMINATOR, TOMBSTONE) as one of Lorenzo Lamas' (Tom the Jock) athletic buddies.
Anyone that has not seen this movie is CRAZY!! It's the best movie I have ever seen. I am only 17 years old and have loved it since I was 3. When I was little I wouldn't go to bed until I had seen Grease. I still try to watch it as much as I can. John Travolta looks great in this movie! It's so fun to sing and dance to! It's a true classic!
Grease's songs are awesome! They will stick in your head for all eternityand it is hard to stay in your seat and not join in the singing anddancing. But on the other hand, the story is lame and stupid. All it is is a bunchofteenagers running around, singing, dancing and falling in love.Yeah, yeah, I know it is loveable film - but seriously it doesn't reallyappeal to me anymore. My rating : 6 and a half / 10
The producers of the film made too many changes like adding new numbers that weren't in the broadway version; this really distorted the quality of this musical. Also several of the numbers were relegated to being background jukebox music; this I felt was totally unfair to the music writers. Anyway, the film still manages to entertain even though it could have been much better.
This is one of my favorite movies. The songs are so fun to sing a long to. There is not even ONE boring part in Grease. The Beauty School Drop Out part is kind of weird though HeHe. I would really recommend this movie to any one is likes musicals or likes Oliva Newton-John and John Trovolta (sp).
This film certainly has it's quality, but the lesser parts are longer thanthe good parts and that actually sets most of the films score. Adding tothat, the fact that I could really not feel for any of the characters oridentify with them does not make it better. A bit of bun shaking by NewtonJohn (or Travolta if you're a girl) does not make up for the lack of storyand depth. Plus I've seen the 50's characterized better and cooler inRoadracers by Robert Rodriguez. If you like Rock and Roll watch Roadracers,if you like Grease and schmaltz watch this one.5 out of 10
I was always wondering why a sequal like grease the reunion which would include the original cast members was never filmed ? Even though the sequal grease 2 was nothing like the first! I'ts never to late to make one especial when we have the ability to produce great special effects in films why not mucicals. I would defently love to see that just like many other fans. I highly recomend grease a film to include in your home video collection. p.s When will the dvd come out it seems like most other popular film have already been relesed why not grease?
This movie is absolutely fantastic! It may be just a musical, but ittouches on a lot of different subjects, not just high-school romance.the acting is unforgettable, the sets are all very nice andrepresentative of that era. and who can forget the songs? the songs arejust the icing on the cake. and, oh, what a sweet, sweet icing it is!Olivia-Newton John and John Travolta had such an on screen chemistrythat made the movie come alive. How else do you explain that this isstill one of the most popular movies out there, even today? That's atestament to Any movie, let alone a Musical. If I had to sum up what ithink about this movie in one sentence, i would have to say, "Grease isthe Word!"
As I have mentioned before (in my review of Singin' in the Rain) I hate musicals. I think they are lame and unengaging. But then a film likeGrease comes along. I hate myself for liking it. I hate, hate, hatemyself. But dammit, I do like this film.Grease is one of those rare creatures, a musical with a genuine heart. Itis effective. The characters are somewhat engaging, the music is downrightinfectious, and I really can't stand to say it, but the story is actuallykind of fun.I am not a lover of fun movies. I tend to like dark, sardonic comedies anddarker dramas, but then there is something about boyant innocence of Grease. It is a fun film that actually succeeds at being fun. I don't know if thisis just because my older cousins (girls) used to play the soundtrack andlipsynch it to me when I was little. Of if it was because of my love of 50srock and roll. Or even if it is because Olivia Newton-John looks hot asSandy. I don't know, but Grease is, and always will be, one of my guiltypleasures.
Paramount made us wait for this gem of a movie, boy did they make us wait. Let me first start out by saying how much I love this all time classic, absolutely no dispute about that. But I'm afraid the DVD is an almost unbelievably poor transfer - from virtually the first second you will notice huge levels of grain on the picture. For me it's just too distracting and made me eject the disc within the first five minutes. The 5.1 soundtrack, what I heard of it, was OK - but again it didn't have the punch I was expecting. I guess for movie like this I was expecting Paramount to pull out all the stops, this HAS NOT happened. I'll stick with my old LaserDisc, very, very disappointing.
Grease: the ultimate sell-out movie. As entertaining as the dance, song, cheesey sketches, etc. etc. are, theultimate message of Grease is a bit disturbing.Basically, Sandy completely sells out. After suffering rejection, shechanges in the end. She changes her clothes, her demeanor, her hair, eventakes up smoking. NOW she is accepted. NOW she is cool. NOW she hasconformed. NOW she is safely seated on the bandwagon. And they livehappily ever after...Don't young people have enough pressure and insecurities in life? Whymuddle their minds more with movies like Grease?
I warn you, they did not highly remaster the fullscreen version. i really recommend the widescreen. i bought the fullscreen version, since i own the ws version on video, so i thought that the fs version might look nice,... But oh well, grease on dvd in both formats is good. get the ws though.
