| Storyline | A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe. |
This film was terrible. I could not believe they've picked RyanReynolds to play Green Lantern, he belongs in rom-coms. And that iswhat he almost turned this into, the comedy played far too big a partin this. What little faith I had in Reynolds as playing this role wasshattered very quickly, he simply is not made for serious movies.Though this film isn't exactly serious, it isn't exactly a comedyeither.Mainly though, the story line was completely flawed. The whole thingjust seemed like bits of 'filler' taken from other films and clumpedtogether. Nothing was properly explained, like, why didn't the evil guyhave a body? Why was he telekinetic if he didn't have a stupid ring? Why is fear yellow? Whenever they mentioned the yellow power of fear Ifelt like I was watching kids play with action figures making up astupid story off the top of their heads. And the fact that all GreenLantern needed to do was say the 'vow' then become super powerful andcunning to kill this thing? Being a superhero movie I was hoping formore Earthly heroics. It was just ridiculous. The whole immortal thing was stupid as well. Seemed again like theyjust couldn't come up with an idea, so they just thought 'ah whatever,a load of unoriginal aliens sat in really high seats at the top of areally high building who have infinite knowledge but then get provedwrong. That sound okay?'. There was just not enough detail to anyaspect of this film. There was genuinely nothing I enjoyed about this film, being a teenagerlets me sort of enjoy a film if there's good fighting or action in it,even if I know the film is awful. Like 300. But this, simply offered menothing. Absolutely awful. Save your money.
Surprisingly this film was better than I thought. Due to the reviewsonline, I nearly did not want to see this and probably would havewaited until the bluray version came out. I am glad to say this filmmet my expectations and was sure fun to watch.I chose to see the 2d version, after finding out that the movie wasactually filmed in 2d and later converted to 3d. After watching clashof the titans 3d and alice in wonderland 3d, I was definitely notfalling foul to this false economy.Anyway, back to the story. This is once again, a nice movie of a comicbook. Green Lantern, Hal is the earth super hero and defending theearth. The visuals are actually amazing and keeps to the nice expectations ofmost.I really don't want to spoil anyone's hope of missing this film. The film is good. It is not better than the new x-men film but it is'ntfar from being good. The only thing I would say would be that the film was not long enoughto concentrate on the main mission of the story. It started of fast, slowed down and finished to fast with a high. Also, for people who will be watching this, please hang around afterthe credits!
This review is from: Green Lantern (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) This review is based on the package for sale, rather than the movie quality. The package comes with an "UltraViolet Digital Copy." What does that mean? It means you will not be able to take the movie with you on your digital devices - you will have to stream it to them whenever you want to watch them. You better have wi-fi or have an unlimited data plan to do that! You can download the movie on your computer, and there it will sit trapped. Had I known it was like this, I would not have paid the extra money for the set with "digital copy." I believe a digital copy is something I can take with me (a copy) on my digital devices without having to stream them each time I want to watch them. And I also was not happy that I had to download two separate programs to even be able to download the movie to my computer. I will never purchase a set with "UtraViolet" again.
a budget of 200 mil.for some, enough said.let us accept that no oneimagined RR in the lead role of the green lantern.the problem with themovie though is something else.i feel it took a lot of time to reallytell the viewers about what it wanted to project.maybe, just maybe, akeanu reeves in the lead role may have brought the color and attitudeto the character.Blake lively as the smart yet subtle girl wasdefinitely not best cast.PETER was brilliant but then it was expected.ifeel the screenplay was above decent but the problem was the awkwarddirection which has not been seen in superhero movies often.there wassomething wrong with the pace too.coming out in year which alsoreleased excellently made X MEN FIRST CLASS AND CAPTAIN America,GREENLANTERN lags way behind.again,i say, better casting could have made ahuge difference.
This movie is too far away from Green Lantern Comic book. If you arehardcore Green Lantern comic book and if you are planning for thismovie then Sorry guys better buy some Donuts. Some of the graphics aregood in this movie but in the end Story Matters. Martin Campbell hasdone a good job again in Direction. But after Golden Eye & CasinoRoyale this movie is not that much good like his earlier films. Wellnow some good news for Ryan Renolds fans, Well its a very good startfor him. Yes after this movie we can imagine him as a superherocharacter. Angela Basset is okay as Amanda Waller, but the character isreally only in the movie for about fifteen minutes, so there's nothingparticularly bad or good about her performance. Mark Strong isspectacular as Sinestro. He perfectly captures the essence of thecharacter from the comics. At the end of the movie, the character doeshave an abrupt personality change, which makes no sense when comparedto the after credits scene. The script had major problems. I don't knowwhat they want to show. It's like 90's flick. Production design of thisfilm is good background score is good.Totally for Kids Not for Adults.
I read Green Lantern back in the 1960s, and on and off since - especially since libraries started carrying `graphic novels'. As far as I am concerned, the film is an acceptable adaptation of the comic - especially considering the changes to continuity that DC has imposed over the decades. The basic origin was a faithful copy, and the fact that `without fear' has been upgraded to 'able to face his fears and overcome them' is merely upgrading what was a simple children's story to a more acceptable adolescent level, and gave us a meaningful plot. The alien characters and planets looked alien thanks to the motion capture and CGI; the story held together reasonably well; this is a Hollywood film, after all. What more could you expect? It may not be dark Knight or Iron Man, but it is a first rate second rate film, and streets ahead of the Fantastic Four or the first Hulk film, at least to me.(Query - did they buy-in the Galactus effects from the Fantastic Four to reuse for Paralax?)
Like many, didn't have great hopes for Green Lantern but I reallywanted to like it. I still came out of the theater disappointed. Ifthis is DC's attempt to compete with Marvel's summer blockbusters, theyhave to learn from the mistakes of this movie. We have a hero in Ryan Reynolds, playing the typical Reynolds role, awise cracking, good looking guy afraid of committing to anything. Heplays it well so I don't have a big issue with this even if we haveseen it before. Blake Lively plays the love interest, she looks greatbut her performance is painful to watch. For the first half of the filmit seemed she didn't want to be there, she was simply reciting herlines. Reynolds has far more chemistry with his nerdy best friend inthe movie played by Taika Waititi. The villains, firstly, Peter Sarsgaard plays the anti-Reynolds and Iliked his performance (although he could have been more vicious andthreatening), he comes across as enjoying his role and I would haveliked to have seen more of him. The big baddie, and my biggest issuewith the story, is a CGI "fear entity" called Parallax. My problem isthis supposedly terrifying entity never really makes any sense. Itdispatches with a group of the most hardened Lanterns in seconds butwhen faced with Hal Jordan (and his 5 minutes of "training" or "gettinghis butt kicked by some Lanterns") it can't land more than one hit andis destroyed in about 5 minutes. Hard not to think to yourself "well...that was easy." To sum up this is a slightly dumb movie that if you get free ticketsto, you should make use of them... but I wouldn't spend any of my moneyon it.
Green Lantern was an OK movie as superhero movies go. Sure it ain'tgonna win no Oscars and it definitely ain't Shakespeare but who cares?!It was still a lot of fun with great visuals and special effects. RyanReynolds was terrific as Hal Jordan and the supporting cast was greattoo. I think there was either a conspiracy against this movie or toomany critics have become too jaded (poetic use of a green gem totallyintended!) and need to take a decade or so off from watching films. Orpossibly it didn't fit in with their preconceived notion of what thismovie should have been. Well, if you like superhero flicks it'sdefinitely worth seeing.
Green Lantern is a film based on the DC Comics superhero of the samename. It stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, MarkStrong, Angela Bassett and Tim Robbins. The script were written by GregBerlanti and comic book writers Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, which was subsequently rewritten by Michael Goldenberg. It tells thestory of Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is selected to become the firsthuman member of the Green Lantern Corps and given a ring that grantshim superpowers after a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroythe balance of power in the universe. It was directed by MartinCampbell. In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful forcehas existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they arecalled the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keepintergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants himsuperpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroythe balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earthlie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human everselected: Hal Jordan. Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but theGreen Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessedthe infinite powers of the ring before. The movie serves as a good entertainment on a Saturday night for itsfans and nothing more.Unfortunately, the screenplay was thinlywritten. It was also not engaging and a bit boring. But credit has to begiven to its spectacular visual and special effects despite of beingdisjointed and somewhat not-so-interesting plot. But overall, anyone wholoves comics will enjoy this film.
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) The movie is fine, but the digital copy is deceptive. It puts your movie on a "cloud" account, so you can only access it that way. It's really deceptive, because it gives you the option to "save to your computer" - that's a LIE. You save it to their account. I looked at the help section, and it clearly says you cannot download it to anything else, once you use Flixster. I am NOT happy. You can watch it on your portable device, but ONLY *through* Flixster. It is not actually *your own* copy.
I am not a comic book character reader, but I do know the story fairlywell from having an older brother that was into comic books. He wouldtell me the story from it sometimes. This is a dark movie in-terms of cinematics, it is so dark is it almostunwatchable. This need to take comic characters and make them have an earthly toneis crazy. In this movie Synestro is a green lantern while in the comicbook he was just the opposite and had the yellow ring and was evil tothe good of the green ring. This takes a comedic route to being the green lantern. This could havebeen a good film but it went comedy with an actor that shouldn't havebeen used to do it, he's no comedian. Time is wasted with OH This isNeat, I can do that. It just doesn't fit.I am glad I did not see this in the theater, I can not imagine this in3D it would have been even worse to see it that way.
Green Lantern is a film that could not have been made 20 years ago. There was no way to create this character without a heavy dose of CGI.The CGI is pretty well done. I don't think I had any gripes in thatdepartment. The film moves along at a fine pace with all the necessary subplots.Worthiness. Love. Fear. Good versus evil. The problems here lie in askeleton script, and some really meaningless characters.Tim Robbins and Peter Saargard's characters came off to me ascharacters that weren't even relevant to the film. "Green Lantern"treads water in terms of the subplots containing those characters. The film also lacks an epic battle sequence. Hal Jordan takes on PeterSaarsgard, a band of thugs, and a huge blob of 'fear', but the movielacks a well-defined and explosive climax. The movie also lacks a clearand effective villain. In the end, we have two poorly defined, weakvillains that cannot stand up to the well-defined and enigmatic(if notdown right charming) lead character. All that said, this is not a bad film at all. For me it's not quite asgood as the slightly over-rated "Thor", and a clear step down from"Captain America".There was so much more that could have been done here. They barely evenbegan to tap into the love story/superhero obligation problems thatcould have added some emotion to an nearly emotionless story. Let'sface it, Green Lantern's obligations lie on a planet light years away. It's not like Bruce Wayne living in a mansion up the street.Reynolds is funny, but not nearly as funny as he could have been with abetter script.I would still recommend this for at least one viewing. It was betterthan I expected, but because of some poor reviews, I didn't expectmuch.55/100 You'll like this if you liked: Spiderman 3, Episode 1, TheIncredible Hulk('08), Xmen Origins Wolverine, and Blade Trinity.
I tried not to take this one seriously, but this is definitely one forthe kids. The entire movie plays out like a childish fantasy. Even thecharacter depth and emotion shown by the characters seems to be writtenby a child who has little to no understanding of how real adults thinkand act.Perhaps important to note is that I am a fan of superhero movies. Inparticular, the X-Men films, Burton and Nolan's interpretations ofBatman, and the films tying into the upcoming Avengers film. I am alsoa fan of both fantasy and science fiction films, such as Lord of theRings and Star Trek respectively. Needless to say, I can appreciate andenjoy films that take great liberties with reality and pure inventionsof human imagination. However, Green Lantern did not impress me. Not asa superhero movie. Not as a science fiction. Not as a film in general.Plot - 2/10. What we see are a random series of events that have nomeaning and build up to a 2 minute climax in which the inexperiencedprotagonist effortlessly defeats an infinitely powerful ancient entity. Some of the most cliché and juvenile themes are tossed at us, such as"I'm a brilliant scientist with a good career, but Daddy doesn'tunderstand me and is embarrassed by me" and "We love each other, but wecan't be together because of my sad feelings that you wouldn'tunderstand". We're expected to believe that overcoming fear is asuperhero trait found in one person out of billions. Too bad this oneperson is immature, irresponsible, and filled to the brim withinsecurity. AKA, a teenager. So many of the ideas that we're expected to accept will only make youroll your eyes. Green is for willpower and it's the strongest force inthe universe! Yellow means fear and is very bad and also grants youtelepathy and telekinesis! Stay away from ugly people, they're evil!"The ring didn't choose you because you're fearless. It chose youbecause you have the capacity to overcome your fear." WHAT?!Acting - 4/10. Reynolds, who I thought was excellent as Deadpool, fallsshort of adequacy in a more serious role. He has one wooden expressionfor the entire film. Even his comedic lines are delivered with a totalstraight face. Though I'm not very familiar with the source material,I'm also under the impression that this interpretation is quite aradical departure from the comic book version, though I suppose that Ishould expect a dumbed down and adolescent version of the original herogiven the themes of the film. The female lead, Lively, seems bettersuited for soap operas and other daytime dramas. In a few scenes, shecompletely overacts and in others she shows no emotion when she clearlyshould be. Given the depth of the film, I suppose the only requirementof her role was to stand around and look pretty and I suppose she doesthat well enough. However, I would have liked to see a more meaningfulcharacter that did more than act as cheerleader for the hero. The real performances, and the reason why I give 4/10, are with thesupporting cast. When you have a supporting cast that outshines theleading roles, that's a sure sign of poor direction, but at least itwas entertaining to watch. Strong and Sarsgaard in particular displayedexcellent acting, but unfortunately neither had enough screen time.Characters - 3/10. Maybe, I'm just crazy, but my favourite characterwas Hector, the peaceful scientist turned villain. We see a man with agreat enthusiasm for his work, a respectable career as a collegeprofessor, and a sense of humility when entrusted with the veryprestigious honour of examining the first recovered alien life form. Wesee him question this honour, citing that others are more deserving andhave waited longer and see him become disappointed when he learns thatit was the result of strings pulled. It shows a great human quality inhim. He doesn't want to get far in life because of politicalconnections. He wants to succeed on his own merits. However, myinterest in the character vanished when he's nipped by the entity offear and suddenly, he's a mind-reader who tosses students about theclassroom and attempts to blow up his father's helicopter. Yes. Ahumble and respectable man turns into a psychopath within 20 seconds offilm. There isn't even a downward spiral or devolution of character. There's just nice guy -> infected -> killing people. Bam.The other members of the Green Lantern Corp were also compelling andinteresting for their whopping 5 minutes of screen time each. Othercharacters were so thinly written and one dimensional that they're noteven worth mentioning, even the lead characters. It wasn't just badacting that made the characters boring. It was the writing anddirection.Overall - 3/10. Just because it's science fiction and just because it'sa superhero film doesn't mean that it has to be childish and completelyvoid of competent writing or direction. On a final note, perhapswriters and director should have researched the science a little more.Things like a fight in an asteroid belt beside the sun are transparentto an elementary school student. It also didn't help that the GreenLanterns at the beginning of the film wore full spacesuits, whereas theones at the end were perfectly capable of breathing in outer space.
I noticed most of all the bad reviews(1 stars) werent even involving the movie itself but the Digital Version copy that comes along with the disc. Review the movie not the stupid Digital Copy.So all in all watch the movie, you will enjoy it!!!!
I have no idea what movie all the critics who bombasted Green Lanternsaw, but it must have been something else, like Kung Fu Panda 2.The GL mythos is a very complex and complicated one, which evenfollowers of the comic could easily get confused by at times. However, the makers of this film did an admirable job of explaining thebackground and rationales of the story in an easily understandablemanner, which even those with no prior knowledge of GL couldcomprehend. There were major plot elements which were drastically changed from theoriginal comic stories. Yet, in the film they were altered andexplained in a fashion that made them accessible to the averagemoviegoer without alienating fans of the comics.Ryan Reynolds excelled as Hal Jordan, making him a believable, funnyand exciting. Mark Strong was great as Sinestro, and the rest of thecast did a fine job as well.*Possible spoiler* And this movie was made solely for the purpose ofintroducing Green Lantern and setting up the next story in which hewill face off against Sinestro. That story looks to be even greaterthan this one was.
I am beginning to feel overrun with super-hero movies, but GreenLantern is only the 5th this year out of 6. I guess 6 is a lot when youthink about the money that's gone in to production, advertising, anddistribution. For something so loved, popular, and (I'm assuming here)well written, these movies have been typically quite bad. I must bestupid or something  I wander in to these movies all excited and leavewith shuffling aimlessly with no will to live. It's like digging in todelicious vanilla pudding only to find it's Miracle Whip®.The movie opens with lovely CGI of what we wish we were getting backfrom the Hubble telescope. We also get a riveting explanation of theorigin of the rings and their power. See, they use an ancient powerharvested from across the universe. It is called willpower.Willpower.Will. Power.Hollywood will take creative liberties with EVERYTHING, but they won'tmake take a teeny bit of liberty to make this more something. I stillcan't put my finger on how this made me feel, but I will tell you it'shard to laugh when your face is buried in your hands. The movie doesn'tget any better with the immediate in-your-faceness of Ryan Reynolds andhis over-hyped star status paired with the detestable Blake Lively. What ever happened to the days when Reynolds was cocky Van Wildertrying to get with Tara Reid? Purity of art is forever lost.Action(?) flies across the screen in constant snippets of nearlyunrelated action backed by little musical medleys that sound likebumper music for a metal-themed sitcom. There should be a clearvillain, but we get a huge misdirect and find that the wicked-cool badguy is just a disposable lackey for Galactus..er Parallax (-noun theapparent displacement of an observed object due to a change in theposition of the observer. Makes sense.) After one and a half gruelinghours of nothing, Hal Jordan suddenly becomes fearless and a perfectgentleman, Parallax finally reaches earth, and Hal Jordan quicklydefeats him while looking incredibly constipated. The trailer is theentire movie, go watch it again.IMDb trivia, while a dubious source, claims that Green Lantern wasoriginally scripted as a comedy starring Jack Black. That makes moresense now that I saw the movie. "A magic ring? Skadoosh! Ham sandwich!"Couldn't have been any worse than the disorganized, over- thoughtexcuse for a movie I suffered through (in 3D, no less).
I like superhero movies as much as the next person, having grown up onthe likes of Superman and Batman. Green Lantern is not the worstsuperhero movie, but far from the best either. For me it was just amildly average and somewhat bland movie, that didn't live up to thepotential it had.Getting the good things out of the way, I did like the cinematography, settings and costumes very much, and while they weren't among the bestor most detailed I've seen the effects were better than average apartfrom Parralex. The score/soundtrack by James Newton Howard complimentsthe film very nicely, Martin Campbell's direction is assured and thereare classy turns from Mark Strong, Tim Robbins and Peter Sarsgaard. On the other hand, Ryan Reynolds didn't quite work for me. Now don'tget me wrong, I initially found him an ideal choice in the title role. The problem is not that Reynolds is bad, actually he is quite spiritedin the role, it's just that the character himself like a lot of thecharacters in the movie is irritatingly bland. Blake Lively is cute andlovely, but her performance goes little beyond that. The story startsoff well with an intriguing idea, being an origin story and all, but isbogged down by too many characters, tedious pacing and too thin a storyfor such a running time consequently some scenes seemed as though theywere going on longer than they should've done. However though, theseproblems are pretty trivial compared to the script, which to put itkindly was an awkward, cliché-driven mess.Overall, neither good or bad, but very average and bland. 5/10 BethanyCox
This review is for the UltraViolet digital copy only. Is it a digital copy? Yes. Can you download it to iTunes? No. You have to install yet another video player on your PC, like I don't enough with iTunes, WMC, WMP, and PowerDVD. Now I need another one for another proprietary format like Roxio for Best Buy's Cinema Now. Plus over Cinema Now is you can stream it your Apple gear, but let's get with it movie studios. Bluray won, Apple won, deal with it and give us uniform formats. I hope WB doesn't do this to Deathly Hollows Part 2.
"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight "Unless you're a comic-book aficionado, it's unlikely that you'll beable to finish the Green Lantern oath off through simple guesswork, butMartin Campbell's film is structured in such way to appeal to bothcomic-fans and comic-newbies alike. The cinematic adaptation of the DCcomic-book Green Lantern follows a member of the Green Lantern Corps, everyman Hal Jordan goes from being a test-pilot, to a universalpeace-keeper, while having to juggle the conventional girl in between. It is a fun and easy-to-enjoy comic-book movie, neither Campbell norReynolds take the film too seriously and it will no doubt beappreciated well by children across the globe, but it's fun, freeloving spirit can't save the film from having an absolutely dire scriptan un-even pacing during the second-act which in turn drags thecomic-to-film property from decent fanfare to adequate beginnings.Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a first-rate test-pilot who never seemsto be able to live up to not only his own potential, but othersexpectations of him as well. Battling the various demons associatedwith his past, he coasts through life and his job to the displeasure ofmany including his female co-pilot Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), andthat is until the Green Lantern member Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison)crash-lands on Earth and chooses Hal as his successor. Abin Sur is amember of an inter-galactic peacekeeping authority called the GreenLantern Corps, with over 3,600 members, the group promises to protectall life-forms in the entire universe(s) against evil, and now HalJordan has been chosen as humanity's first member. Armed with a ring, agreen lantern, and almost infinite power which is driven through thestrength of its participants will-power, Hal must join the GreenLantern Corps and prove himself as he battles the parasitic-entityParallax which feeds on its opponents fear.Despite obtaining some criticism from writers and critics about 'GreenLanterns' lavish and brightly coloured CGI and non-CGI sets, it doesallow the film to set this planet apart from the other worlds in whichother comic-books envision. Oa, where the Green Lantern Corps centralbase of operations is situated, is a brightly lit utopia fuelledthrough the will-power of thousands. It looks beautiful, as thecomputer generated imagery really sets the city a part from otherrecently envisioned comic-book realms. While the characters themselves,Sinestro (Mark Strong), Killerwog (Michael Clarke Duncan) and theGuardians of the Universe also establish themselves within the comicbook universe with their unique and vibrant appearances, allowing themto drive the film's plot along where needed, but their characters areincredibly underused, which is most likely a product of the fact that a'Green Lantern' sequel is no doubt being lined up ASAP, but it is alsoa big drain on the film's impact. While the CGI aliens and action heavyplot does its part to create a pretty-easy-going-popcorn-flick, thehuman characters and the film's script do not.Despite 'Green Lanterns' running time being a mere one hour andforty-five minutes due to the boring and drawn-out second act of thefilm it seems like the film lasts a lot longer in reality. While it isa Green Lantern/Hal Jordan-centric film, very little time is spent eventrying to intersperse a small amount of characterisation into the humancharacters of the piece. Senator Hammond (Tim Robbins), Dr. Waller(Amanda Bassett) and even the film's Earth-trapped antagonist, scienceteacher Henry Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), are barely allowed any time topresent and develop their own motives or thoughts. This isn't helped bythe film's exceptionally clichéd and poorly written script which failsto not only add further depth to related characters, but it also failsto provide Reynolds with enough humorous sequences to drive hiscomic-book persona. While 'Green Lantern' does work on some levels, italso fails on others, and while the film is very easy-going andenjoyable comic-book adaptation, it is also severely restricted by itsslow-moving, poorly written middle segment which is then underminedfurther its frenetic conclusion.
I saw this movie not knowing a lot about the main character. I am not afan of comics. I went to the movie with not a lot of expectations dueto the negative critics. It was not a great movie, but it was entertaining. The special effectare nice and the movie will make you laugh at some point. If you areexpecting a great story when you see a movie, this is not a movie foryou. But if you can watch it and just enter the universe and enjoy itas it is, you will like it. If you saw the trailer and was interest, then go see it and make yourown idea about it.8 stars for a good entertaining movie.
