OMG! What a waste of talent!!

They have the funniest bunch of comedians and they totally wasted them. The story was weak and odd. Its like they wanted to do too much with all the characters. They couldnt stay with one storyline and make a strong movie. This movie totally sucked. There was only like 4 or 5 parts that made me laugh. They couldve done so much more with the 5 main male characters bonding at the lake house and go from there. Salma Hayek was awful in her role. BAD casting. She had no chemistry with Sandler or anyone else. Very random choice. The kids were cute though. The part at the end with the basketball game rivalry was retarded. It also didnt make sense that they were all so into their coach that they would take his ashes from his niece and scatter them. I ve never seen anyone that close to their coach. One of the worst Sandler movies ever. Makes Mall Cop look interesting, and that movie was a complete wreck.

BIG CHILL COMEDY

The movie starts out with 5 kids who look like the adult stars winning the city championship in basketball in 1978 at the buzzer. 30 years later they reunite at Coach "Buzzer's" funeral and opt to spend a weekend together at a lake house with their families. Three of them have "normal" families that don't appreciate them. A fourth is married to a woman twice his age and a fifth is still single. The humor consists mostly at exchanging barbs and zingers, making fun of people who are fat, short, ugly, or old. There is a sophomoric running joke of the 4 year old that still breast feeds (even in public) because the liberal permissive parents can't say no. This joke could have been left out. (Sometimes less is more.) After spending a few hours outdoors, the big five notices that their families are all inside in their electronic world. They go inside and force the family to enjoy the great outdoors with expected results. Eventually the team they beat for the championship as kids challenges them to another basketball game because Robin Williams didn't gross us out enough. The movie ends on a warm and fuzzy note as many inane comedies do, teaching us a lesson on the importance of family and friends, but not overly warm and fuzzy. I thought Salma Hayek did an excellent job considering her poorly written lines and overall weak script.

Funniest movie of 2010!!!

I really don't understand all the bad reviews about this movie. But Iguess if you are expecting a movie with lots of meaning and a greatstory line... yes, then you will be highly disappointed. But hey, that's not what I am looking for. I am looking for a funny movie whereI can just laugh out loud for 90 minutes. And that is what "Grown Up"gives you. Laughs nonstop. I really enjoyed the movie, the castdelivers one funny situation after another, just as you would expect itfrom Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James and the others. I had tearsrunning down my cheeks, I haven't laughed that much in a movie for along time. So here is the secret to the funniest movie of 2010: Do NOTexpect a great story and you will have the greatest fun!! Enjoy &laugh, that's what this movie is all about. I would go an watch itagain!!

I'm a Big Kid Now

Somewhere within "Grown Ups" is a film that can be taken seriously. There are good themes at work: Friendship, family, generation gaps, the ups and downs of marriage, whether or not aging is the same as maturing. The problem is, none of it shines through the murk of its incessant low grade comedy; rather than make us laugh with genuinely funny material, writers Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf rely on juvenile jokes that put all emphasis on unrealistic personality quirks. It's all character and no development. They also go for unpleasant sight gags, including bodily harm, unwanted brief nudity, urinating in the pool, and worst of all, several awkward and disgusting references to breast milk. Forget about the characters - the filmmakers are the ones that need to grow up.The premise centers on five friends, who as kids back in 1978 were part of their school's Basketball team. Thirty years later, we find each of them living completely different lives. Lenny Feder (Sandler) is a successful Hollywood agent. Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James) claims he's the head of a lawn furniture company. Kurt McKenzie (Chris Rock) is a stay-at-home dad. Rob Hilliard (Rob Schneider) is a holistic typecast who seemingly always preferred older women. The only one of the group to have escaped marriage and family is Marcus Higgins (David Spade), an overage sexaholic party animal. Upon the death of the coach who led them to victory, they return to their New England hometown with their families and spend the Fourth of July holiday at a lakeside summer house; here, the five friends will reminisce, fight, rediscover, reveal, and, according to the film's title, grow. For Lenny, it's a personal mission to get his family to see what real life is like. His wife, Roxanne (Salma Hayek Pinault), is a workaholic fashion designer with an impending show in Milan. His two adolescent sons are spoiled, addicted to texting and violent video games, always waited on hand and foot, preferring imported bottled water, accustomed to five-star accommodations at hotels, and apparently unaware that television sets existed before the days of flat screens. They bring along their nanny, a tiresome Asian stereotype (Di Quon), although Lenny desperately tries to convince his friends that she a foreign exchange student and not hired help. Something could have been made of this had it not been overshadowed by shallow, obvious humor; his kids are ridiculous Hollywood caricatures with no traces of believability, and his wife is stylistically out of place, not at all helped by the fact that Salma Hayek was wrong for the role.Other bizarre personalities emerge. Eric's wife, Sally (Maria Bello), still breastfeeds their four-year-old son, and as it so happens, the kid constantly craves milk. Kurt's pregnant wife, Deanne (Maya Rudolph), always takes him for granted and can never say anything nice about his cooking; the same goes for her mother (Ebony Jo-Ann), who's always butting in and has terrible bunions. Rob's wife, Gloria (Joyce Van Patten), is in her mid seventies, while his three daughters - two of them smoking hot bimbos, one a dorky misfit - spend as much time as they can being the source of many appearance-related jokes. Rob is the film's worst character, fleshed out solely by exaggerated holistic traits and general social and physical oddness; one wonders how he could ever be friends with the other four, or rather, how they could ever be friends with him.The film's climax involves a Basketball rematch between the five friends and their former rivals, led by Colin Quinn, who always believed the game from thirty years ago was unfairly won. While there is a moral to this scene, it doesn't resonate, and that's because it's masked by the film's immature tone. It's also delivered far too late in the story, at which point we no longer care about the characters or their circumstances. I'm well aware that humor can often times be found in very serious situations, but that's not what's going on here; it's a sophomoric and silly buddy film through and through. The more reserved and mature themes near the end seem like afterthoughts, as if Sandler and Wolf decided at the last minute to decided to tack them on. That way, their screenplay could actually be about something. To me, this isn't a question of whether or not you're an Adam Sandler fan. I say this because every review I've read seems to think this somehow matters: "If you're an Adam Sandler fan, you're going to like this movie." How about if you're a fan of comedy? I think that's the real criteria, here. I very much consider myself a fan. The thing is, even comedies should have standards, and in the case of "Grown Ups," they're in short supply. It has no ambition other than to be goofy and gross. It generates laughs not by respecting the intelligence of the audience, but simply by appealing to the lowest common denominator. On a more positive note, I will give David Spade credit for being the only actor I know of to successfully say "grody," a word that hasn't been popular for quite some time.

5 friends reunited for a funeral for their old basketball coach.

DVD ALERT. Grown up'sI was at friend's house over the thanks giving day holiday weekendhelping with his holiday decorations outside. We got into aconversation about movies my favorite topic. He said he had a copy ofgrownups staring Adam Sandler. I said definitely, how you could gowrong with an Adam Sandler movie.I know there are people saying AdamSandler is too childish for me. What can you say about Adam Sandler he has made some memorable moviecharacters? He didn't disappoint with his latest Happy Madison project. He brought together a group of some today's funniest comediansincluding Chris rock, Kevin James, David spade, and Rob Schneider. Italso includes the beautiful Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph.I thought it was a good script about a bunch of old friends broughttogether years later by the death of their old basketball coach. Theyreunite after 30 years in a small New England town to pay respect totheir fallen coach. When they first meet they give each other razzingabout how much they have changed weigh gain, Chris rocks house husbandlife, Kevin James wife breast feeding his 4 yr old (very funny scenes)rob Schneider very older wife and beautiful daughters and the guystrying to figure out how they came out of him. The location of themovie in New England was a great choice; the cabin they stayed in thelocal town had a family friendly feeling to it. Some of the memorable scenes were they were eating after the funeraland Mari Bello started breasts feeding their son.She called him over towhere she was sitting pulled out her breast. The group asked how oldtheir son is she said 4 yrs old. Chris rock face had this look ofhorror and slide down the bench...lol. The comedy in this movie isdefinitely Adam Sandler material. The scene at the pool in the waterpark defiantly fit that bill. Kevin James daughter asked while in thepool are peeing in the pool he said no honey; she says they put a blueliquid in there to see pee. He said it's just a myth sweetheart. Thepan back the camera and all off his buddies are peeing, the whole poolof people scatters. I enjoyed this movie because it had a buddy theme to it, old friendsget together reminisce about the old days, talk about what there uptoo. There is a lot of joking around between them and their families.Throughout the movie Adam and the guys realize its has become very hardto raise there kids they way they have been raised when they were kids.Adam Sandler realizes his kids have become very spoiled brats ex: theygot insulted when the nanny brought then hot chocolate that wasn'tGodiva flavored. He try to get them to realize there other things toenjoy then video games 24 7, playing outdoors getting fresh airskipping rocks on the lake where their cabin is. His other movies weremostly geared towards guys and his sense of humor. This has a familysense to it.You get to know the guys families as the movie goes on, andit more than a regular Adam Sandler movie you're used to. It has afamily atmosphere to it. This a movie everybody can enjoy. It was thetype of movie where you can imagine you and your friends in the rolesof Sandler and his buddies and their families. When you're done youwill want to call your friends and say hey let's get tighter for abarbecue.I really enjoyed this movie and would definitely suggestbuying or renting it.I give it 2 1/2 stars.my link is http://thehollywoodreview.blogspot.com/

Sometimes funny, but mostly we are not amused

For some of us watching "Grown Ups", a buzzer at the end of the firsthalf would have been a welcome relief. At that point, RoxanneChase-Feder (Selma Hayek- Pinault, please note), the wife of ex-schoolbasketball star Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler), prepares to storm out ofthe lakeside lodge and fly back to Milan, where she is a fashion maven.By then, we have been subjected to the images of a dead man's ashesblown over a bucket of fried chicken; a "48-month-old" boy beingbreast-fed; a grandmother's bunion and swollen toe; a middle-aged fatman urinating while in the middle of a New England lake in full view ofyoung ladies; and bacon sizzling on a bug zapper. Those gags are meantto make our day, but despite the occasional wit, restrained flatulencejokes, and chuckle- baiting punch lines, they leave us cheerless andwondering if we deserve better. No, we don't deserve better, because we stay glued to our seats, hungryfor any entertainment. Roxanne stays for the flimsiest of reasons, andwe get another dose of the same-oh same-oh, only a bit grosser, a tadzanier, and a little more hectic. Sometimes, in a flash of comedicbrilliance or a cute, well-delivered joke, we laugh. Sometimes. Breastmilk squirts across the screen. Dave Spade's bum makes a cinematicdebut ("That's an ass?" – the movie's best line). And some pratfallshappen, but we're still not amused.Just before the end, we are treated to what could be the mostexcruciating scene from Hollywood in recent years, when out of theblue, the three married couples in the story do theI-have-something-to-confess routine, pouring out their hurts and painnot even hinted at earlier. Television does this sort of thing muchbetter and "Grown Ups" shows how deeply television has subvertedmainstream cinema, and us moviegoers as well. If the scene was meant tobe a parody, then the script and direction could have used a lot offine-tuning. Curiously, the careers of the main collaborators of this movie, director Dennis Dugan and co-screenwriter Sandler himself, got startedin television. The sad thing is what they have here is a rich lode ofpossibilities, from the story concept to the able actors. A quintet ofmiddle school basketball stars reunites after 30 years for the funeralof their coach, their mentor on life. This theme of buddies' reunionhas produced two memorable films, "The Secaucus Seven" and "The BigChill". Structuring a comedy or farce around it -- now that's a truechallenge. Another angle barely explored here is the new generationgap: between the texting and the Web-social-networking kids of theDigital Noughties and the survivors of the Me Decade of the 70s, or theRevivalist 80s .Sandler succeeds in the box-office because he has made and still canmake millions laugh. And to top it all, he's got one of the mostlikable faces in the business, totally affable and engaging in areassuring sort of way. And don't forget his great comic timing, delivered with his trademark smile. But he may be depleting his bank ofadmirers. He and the other makers of "Grown Ups" were sitting on a goldmine of material and talent but they managed to deliver only fluff.

not a good movie at all

This movie was REALLY bad.. The Saturday night live actors in thismovie should stick to their bad skits on Saturday night live.. theywere awful actors then and still are.. not to mention this story was soridiculous and class less, focusing on peoples short comings andhorrible dialog through out the movie.. I laughed maybe once. Not agood movie for kids. I feel sorry for parents that have any class atall taking their kids to see a movie like this. Showing a woman breastfeeding like it was perverted is just weird... Not funny at all. I feelbad for parents taking kids to movies like this. You would be betteroff renting a wholesome Walt Disney movie.

Big Disappointment

Given the well-known comedic actors in this film, I thought it was sure to be hysterically funny. Wow, was I disappointed. I was almost embarrassed for the actors to take on such a film and then allow it to be produced. The jokes were trite and not funny. It was as if a camera crew followed around Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade and Kevin James and let them be themselves and crack jokes. Well, it wasn't funny. Then they had to throw in the farting, poop and peeing gags. Boy, that been done to death and guess what - it's not funny!! I expected more from Adam Sandler and the gang. Even the music was so overly dramatic in the scenes when the film tried to exhibit some tenderness - that it couldn't save the moments when the film tried to project a good message about being with family. All in all, the movie was a huge let down.

Grown-Ups, The Movie for Teenagers

Now Grown-Ups is an excellent movie to teenagers. The movie is centeredaround them. Hot girls, funny jokes, sports, etc. Anyways I've read acouple comments and the people who hate on this movie are probably outof their teen years. My opinion is Grown-Ups is a very funny comedy. Now sure it doesn't have a plot but that doesn't make it stop frombeing a good movie. Plus the PG-13 rating is perfect because littlekids and teenagers can watch it.I also have to ask why do people complain and complain? Multiplereviews comment about the marriages in the movie. No way someone thatfat can get someone that hot! Really? It's a movie. I mean look atAvatar? No one says "Hey, Pandora isn't real! Let's hate on it!" Moviesdon't need to be realistic they just need to appeal to people. Itcertainly appeals to me and to many other people. That's what I think people can argue with me but that's their opinion.

(2012-05-20 02:15)

Pretty CRAPPY

Wow - I wanted it to be better since I really like a lot of the actors in this movie. I chuckled about three times. Don't waste your time.

Nostalgic experience of Grown up comedians .........

Quite a feel good film. A nice time pass movie with your family. The whole story is about nostalgic feelings about their 12 year oldtimes. The five friends are well known faces for their comedy filmsthey are Lenny (Adam Sandler) ,Eric (Kevin James), Kurt (Chris Rock),Marcus (David Spade), and Rob (Rob Schneider) along with their leadwomen enjoy after their beloved coach's funeral with their family in afarm house. The funny acts is the rest of the movie.Everyone will have a huge expectations on this movie when this wholegang of comedy stars along with hottie Salma ...but will this movielive up to that definitely no...But any ways there are enough scenes for laughs. The water park scenes are really funny. Particularly to say a few Alldaddy do the sissy, dives, hot chicks on slides, kids enjoying you canenjoy those sequences in the movie. The only Dis-appointing thing of the movie is that Salma Hayek was justseen sharing screen space as company to Sandler but nothing more fromher.Above average comedy flick. My rating is 6.5 on 10.

very funny in parts but a little predictable.

I just came out of the cinema after watch Grown Ups, i thought it was avery funny film but it could have been better. I don't really rate AdamSandler in his "silly" films but he was good in this one no stupidnoises or dumb acting characters. I mainly went because David Spade wasin this movie and i think he is brilliant for what he is, he's an allround funny guy even when you look at him it makes you laugh. ChrisRock, Rob Schneider and Kevin James played good characters but the bestcharacter in the whole film was played by Ebony Jo-Ann who in the filmplays Mama Ronzoni every time she said something it made me chuckle! The slight down side is when your watching you suddenly feel likeyou've seen this movie before. I know it is only a comedy but we arethe people paying to watch it...so a little more originality would notbe to much to ask for. I would recommend seeing this movie i gave it 7out of 10 because it is just so funny! hope you enjoy the film if yourthinking of seeing it :)

(2012-05-18 17:28)

Meh .. get something else

I just watched this .. I can just tell they are trying so hard to make it funny. This movie is so horribly written, everything that happens has a setup and is so obvious, even the 'dramatic' family stuff. One thing that is really odd in this movie .. is that the movie BG/scene music if few and far between. I get the feeling like I am watching someones utterly boring home movies. The one part that was abit funny was the blue pee dye in the wading pool.

(2012-05-18 04:57)

I am sure glad I didn't pay for it...

My wife and I found this on-demand through FiOS last week. What a HORRIBLE movie! It is not funny, drawn out and is complimented by an atrocious script written by Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf. Thank you god we didn't pay for the viewing - it was free and I now understand why! I would have been so mad if we paid $50+ to go to the movies to see this garbage. The funniest (and this is a stretch) part of the movie can be found 10-15 minutes in when Kevin James busts through the side of his pool. It is all downhill after that. Save your money; don't purchase this horrible, horrible movie. You will be much better off purchasing Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and/or The Wedding Singer. Sandler's career takes a sharp down-turn after these films.

(2012-05-17 10:13)

THE KIND OF FILM THAT ENDS CAREERS!

I like Adam Sandler or at least I have liked some of Sandler's films....maybe even loved some of them. The early years are the best, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, The Water Boy and 50 First Dates are at the top of the list. What Sandler has been doing in recent years is try to play two audiences and it is leaving both of them very unsatisfied! This film is really meant to be a family film with all it's white bread goodness, but Sandler has a hard time leaving the potty humor out when he gets with his comedian friends and co-stars. The potty humor really has no business in this film because it is a little too perverted and sick for you to watch with your 5 year old, but too corny to watch with your friends. Case in point - the 4 year old that mommy still feeds!??? WTF? I mean... it isn't even a funny joke to begin with and I would think this would be uncomfortable to say the least to watch with your kids! Eewwwww! To make matter worse they keep going back to it as if it's hilarious!Besides being very uneven in tone, it is also a very bland film with very little to laugh at. This seems impossible with the likes of Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider to help you along, but it is fact. There isn't one scene that evokes any more than a slight chuckle! Why two stars? ....well for as bad as it is, I did make it all the way through this embarrassing mess and I do like these guys. It's a rental at best, but don't make it the star attraction or it's going to be an early evening. I hope that Sandler steps back and takes a look at what direction he wants to go in because the guy hasn't had a really good film in a while and the bad is starting to out weigh the good!

AalnC (2012-05-16 20:22)

A train-wreck!

A bloody-awful would-be comedy. Or perhaps an exercise on incompetentfilm making. We rented this at Redbox not knowing how bad it was. After 10 minutesit was quite obvious that this was pure un-funny garbage. There was something to be said about the TV show 'At the Movies' thatwould have warned us about disasters such as this one. So the lessonis, make sure you scan as many movie critic's reviews before spending$10 dollars at the theater, or $1 at Redbox just to see such an awfulmovie.Grown Ups was a wasted dollar.

A comfortable movie

I can't say Im a big fan of Adam Sandler, most of his movies are thesame. This one I must say is a little bit different from the others. Its a bit more mature and therefore more funny. It contains morecomedians then normally which gives the movie some more different jokesthan we're used to hear in Adam related movies. The script isn't really bad nor is it good. The acting however is poor,at least from Adams part but I didn't expect much of him or this movieso it didn't come as a shock to me.In overall Its a relaxing movie, nice to watch after a hard day of workor when you just have had a troubled day.I think he is heading in the right direction here and Im curious onwhat he'll do next!

awesome movie

This review is from: Grown Ups [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I love this movie. It is one of those that you can watch several times and not get tired of it. I received it on time and am very pleased with the movie.

NOT Funny and Often Lame but oh... the Women!

This thing was heading to 0 out of 10 territory but manages to finishwith enough good will and enough eye candy to post a recovery score.Honestly, making it through the first half of this film was neartorture. Everything prior to Rob Schneider's daughters showing up wasuncomfortable and NEVER funny. The rest of the film barely elicits achuckle but it turns in to a family feel good film that doesn't makeyou want to run screaming for the exits. What seriously helps is themovie's babe watch factor believe it or not. Salma Hayek, Maria Belloand the unbelievably hot daughters bouncing around in bikinis andcheerleader outfits certainly eased the pain. Two points just for themand one point for trying so hard... the rest = GACK.
