The Abominable Showman

When straight guys play gay guys, this can go either pretty well orpretty badly, this film being a prime example of the latter. If it goeswell, you'll usually have actors who play their gay characters as inany other (not necessarily tragic) romantic involvement, which is whatGyllenhaal and Ledger did in 'Brokeback', and what Colin Firth did in'A Single Man'. If it goes badly, the actors and/or the script relyheavily on common gay stereotypes, which is what Patrick Swayze did in'To Wong Fu', and what Jim Carrey does here. That's all the more regrettable as the true Steven Russell story isindeed brilliant screen material, among other things dwelling on thereasons why family fathers, at a turning point of their lives, mayquestion their sexual identity. What do the script and the abominableshowman Carrey make out of this? He exclaims 'I wanna be a faggot!outlined on a stretcher after a car accident. His character quickly evolves into one of the most offensive Hollywoodportrayals of gay men I've ever seen: while the extravagant, shallowcon-man lifestyle Russell aka Carrey pursues in the film may beaccurate for the story, I could have done very well without clichéremarks such as 'I discovered that being gay is terribly expensive'.This plays well into a certain public stance towards gays: we tolerateyou as long as you behave according to our stereotypes, which filmslike this embrace. Typical for this are the ridiculously overplayed sexscenes, which seem to have caused a stir, even though there's astraight sex scene just as ridiculous to match, which should have shownthat credibility isn't quite the issue here.To be fair, it's not all Carrey's fault: the script jumps from oneperspective to the other and simply can't decide what this is supposedto turn into. A gay romance? A con-man story? A comedy? A dramedy? Abiopic? McEwan seems just as confused about this as his haplesscharacter; even though he is about the only good thing this drivel hasto offer, his acting angle appears to be just as clueless as the viewerin regard to the plot.Or maybe I'm just being a drama queen, and Carrey's shenanigans arejust the harmless silly fun they've always been. Yet it's hard to beobjective about a film that mocks a significant part of your life.

It's about LOVE, folks, & it's about time...

This review is from: I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD) Waited & waited for release of this film, finally heard it was being shown as an in-flight movie (!!),so Amazon to the rescue, & what a gem it is!! I'm a big Jim Carrey fan anyway, & as others have mentioned, the chemistry beween him & McGregor makes all the difference, that, plus a great script. Also, the word "heartfelt" keeps cropping up; it is indeed that, as well as erotic, very funny, tender & sweet-natured & raunchy. Wouldn't call it a "gay" film, it's a human film. Check out the marvelous "Happy, Texas", if you liked "ILY,PM", & all praise to the folks who brought this to the screen, it's really something to be proud of,& to enjoy in the profoundest sense of the word.

It has two gay guys in it!!! Wooaa!!!

I'm not OK with the gayness of the movie because everybody seems tolike this flick just because it has two gay guys in it.This is one of the times when I feel I have been watching another moviethan the rest of the people in IMDb. C'mon, this movie was pointless. For example, think of the whole concept "I love you Phillip Morris" -yet all we get to know about this guy Phillip is that he is played by(in a stereotypical gay manner) by Ewan. Is the audience really thisdemanding with the story? Please don't give us too much information.Jim is creepy and doesn't fit to be an attractive outgoing gay guy.Actually he is more like the gay guy from his legendary joke about gayguy who is annoying to everyone (check it on youtube if you don'tremember, that has more quality than any scene in this movie). But goodnews for the fanboys - he keeps making those faces which we all haveseen before in his every role.3/10

Widening your view

I was out with friends, and they had already decided to go for thatfilm. I didn't have a clue what was it about. In the first place, I'mnot a fan of Jim Carrey's humor. Still, why not? I'm far fromhomophobia, but telling the truth, during the film I thought my buddieshad been tricking me. Putting my stubbornness aside, I just watched themovie. What made me laugh most were not that much the funny scenes. This movie has a real quality. It makes one's see that men who havefeelings for other men are no different than men who have feelings forwomen. It also makes us wonder a lot about our situation, what we want, what we're doing, where are we going. It is a comedy, but I think itdeals more with, society, love, and even psychological matters. It isdefinitively a gay romance. A romance as touching as the most popularones, Nothing Hill or The Notebook. I feel a hint of remorse, judgingthat film before. And let's point that the actors performance, especially Ewan McGregor, were quite great, really into it. Ficarra andRequa made their character's love possible to our eyes not minding theepisode's absurdity. :) I felt this movie tearfully (for the mostemotive ones), a little mentally troublesome because out of place atcertain moments, and of course funny, drawing the whole of it quiteexciting. What I liked most was the untying of the story. It is a mustsee movie, to seek when you're in a good mood and with people to laughwith. Unadvised to watch during the week, coming back from work. As faras I'm concerned, I would rather have watched it on my sofa at home, ona Sunday late evening; I mean, not something to go to see a theaterswondering if you just shouldn't have waited for it to go out at TV. (:

Excellent date movie for all sexual orientations

I got to see an early screening and found the film to be highlyenjoyable. It has a large amount of funny dialogue and sight gags whichmade me giggle, none of which were scatological, a difficult thing tofind in most comedies. The romance was very believable, if illogical. What made Philip Morris so darn irresistible isn't explained, but thatmakes it more of a love story. It's also very refreshing to see a Hollywood film that doesn'treinforce damaging stereotypes about LGBTQ people, unlike the awful andat points offensive "The Kids are All Right." Contrary to how evenheterosexual males are generally depicted in today's films and TVshows, Steven Russell genuinely cares for his ex-wife and daughter, even after moving states away to live as an openly gay man. He keeps intouch with them, follows his daughter's growth, and sends(ill-begotten) money. In addition, the gay characters are largelydepicted as serially monogamous.Overall, I highly recommend this film, especially as a date movie, foradult couples of all sexual orientations.

Give it a chance, you won't regret it

I love you Phillip Morris tells us the true story of Steven Russell(Jim Carrey), a supposedly happy married man with a good job that inreality is a gay con man. In one of his many visits to jail, he fallsin love with Phillip Morris, his cell mate. When Phillip Morris getsout of jail. Russell to prove his love he will escape in numerous timesand do the impossible to be with his love one. The movie is interestingand funny, it has a quick paced rhythm that never bores you. The castis very good, Jim Carrey is Steven Russell, his performance wasexcellent, maybe one of the finest of his career, Ewan McGregor asPhillip Morris isn't as good as I expected but it was convincingenough. The supporting roles of Leslie Mann as Debbie, Carrey's wifeand Rodrigo Santoro as Jimmy, one of Carrey's lovers were very decent. In conclusion, I love you Phillip Morrismay not be a movie ofeveryone's taste but it's surely worthy to take a look

Lee Eisenberg (2012-05-20 22:55)

coming to terms with identity

After years of mostly silly roles, Jim Carrey stars in a movie based ona true story. He plays Steven Russell, who after an accident came outas gay to his wife. Imprisoned for fraud, he befriended Phillip Morris(Ewan McGregor) and they started their own schemes. But everything hasa cost. While "I Love You Phillip Morris" is no "Brokeback Mountain", it stilldoes a good job looking at how these men had spent their livesrepressing who they were and it damaged them both. The obvious problemis that the southern accents aren't totally believable. But otherwise, both Carrey and McGregor - along with supporting players Leslie Mannand Rodrigo Santoro - do a fine job getting into the roles. And ofcourse there's plenty of funny stuff along the way. I recommend it.

Just enough of Jim Carey funny man to make a great movie

They took a few liberties with the actual story of Steven Russell but hey its a comedy not a documentary and a hilarious comedy at that. Actually its a very good love story, grand con flick and prison break movie with just enough of Jim Carey the funny man to make every scene memorable. However, if you are the least bit homophobic don't even attempt to see this because you will be highly offended.

Homolarious

Be advised, this is not your typical harmless, feelgood, "rubber-faced", family-friendly, Jim Carrey-kind of comedy like "Liar Liar", "Yes Man" and "Bruce Almighty". This is a black comedy. As black as they come. Jim Carrey portrays the (gay) con artist Steven Jay Russell, and this is actually based on a true story. I don't want to go too much into detail, because the whole story will probably just sound weird, but it kind of reminds me of "Catch Me If You Can", only way more funny, sick and twisted. I recommend it.I'm not gay, but I think this movie is funny nonetheless. Mostly for Jim Carrey-fans. I doubt I would have even seen it if you removed Jim Carrey. Much less liked it.

Catch me if you can.

Having recently picked up the DVD of this film,I decided to searchonline to try and find out how a movie with a pretty big cast, seemed tohave been swept under the carpet. After looking round online for awhile,I was very surprised to see that this film has had a lot of legaltroubles with its US release (although it was luckily able, to come outoverseas, where the film was able to gross all its budget back, and somemore!)During my viewing of this very entertaining film, (which moves ata stunning pace)I feel that although it lacks some of the excellentblack comedy moments of screenwriters/first time co-directors GlennFicarra and John Requas screenplay for the classic ant-family- friendlyChristmas film "Bad Santa",it is still a very funny, sadly over lookedfilm. The plot: With a good wife,a strong role in the running of his local church andhaving a respectable job as a local police officer.Everything seems tobe going smoothly for Steven Jay Russell until, one day on his way backfrom work Russell has another driver suddenly speeds into his car, andcauses a huge car crash. As Steven starts to heal up in hospital, hebegins to feel that he should not be holding anything back in hislife, and that he should instead let all of his feelings and desirer'sout into the open. This leads Russell to giving his wife a realshock,by telling her that for almost his whole life,he has beengay.Right after his surprise anoucment Steven, decides to leave all ofhis family and friends behind,so that he can instead get a boyfriendand live the high-life in a very wealthy city. With Russell havinggotten hold of a great boyfriend for himself,he next goes on a hugespending spree so that he can be "the man" of the city. The only troublewith that plan is that he is spending much more money, then he isgetting in.Despratly not wanting to lose his new shine,Steven decidesthat he is going to get hold of the extra money that he needs for hisextravagant life style,by turning into a con man!.Though things atfirst seem to be getting aligned for Russell to succeeded, with himstealing companies cash right under the bosses nose.He is eventuallycaught out and sent straight away to spend quite a bit of time injail.During his time in prison Steven gradually starts to accept thathe has to make the most out of being stuck in jail, and over time hebecomes one of the trusted "elders" who are asked by the guards tointroduce inmates to their new surroundings. After having given a newinmate a guided tour of the prison,Stevens eyes catch a glimpse ofanother new inmate called Phillip Morris. With his eyes being transfixedon Morris,Roberts gets a hard case of love at first sight.Thanfully forRussell,Morris also gets a feeling of love at first sight for him, whichover time leads to both of them falling deeply in love for eachother.Sadly with Stevens jail term coming to an end soon,he knows thathe has a big risk that his relationship with Morris will end. This leadsSteven to deciding that he needs to dust down his old conning ways, sothat he and Morris can still be a couple..View on the film: For the first 40 minutes of thefilm,writers/directors Ficarra and Requas have the film move at atremendous speed, with Stevens changing life style and excellent consmaking the first half of the film very entertaining.Although the humouris a lot more sweet-natured than there screenplay for the film BadSanta,Ficarra and Requas are still able to fill the film with a lot ofgreat comedy moments, with Russells increasingly insane ideas of how hecan stay close to Phillip being a particular highlight, which are alsomade to be a lot more funnier by a brilliant performance from JimCarrey, who impressively stays right in the centre, and never turnsSteven Jay Russell into a complete slap- stick comedy character,or anextremely shadowy individual. With the last half an hour, the film sadlyruns a bit out of steam, with the films plot moving at a noticeablyslower pace than the amazing first half.Although it does have to besaid, that Ficarra and Requas unleash a huge surprise twist near the endof the film, that along with catching you off guard, also cleverlyconnects up with the beginning of the film.Final view on the film: An excellent off-beat,well written and directed comedy, with aremarkable performance from Carrey.

Excellent! Smart comedy for smart people!

Now, don't be alarmed! Yes, it is a movie about gay love, which mightmake some people feel uncomfortable, but please do see past that! Openyour mind and you will see that it is an amazing story about an amazingman told in the most funny and sincere manner. I mean, wow! If I wouldhave a hat, I would take it off to honor these people who have beenbrave enough and daring enough to take up this story and created suchan excellent movie. It is a some what sensitive topic. Well yeh, but inthe movie it is merely a background against which all the action takesplace.I believe that the world has grown and its views on homosexualityare not as strict as they used to be some years ago. I hope that peopleare not going to be hypocrites and, by saying that the subject ofmen-to-men love is not acceptable to them, ignore this movie. The movie is about a man named Steven Russell - a man who has neverfigured out who he really is and what is his place in this world. Hehas seen it all and done it all, but everything has been merely apreamble to what's coming. He meets his true love. He meets PhillipMorris. From then on he lives for this man. All he does is for the soulpurpose of making his other half happy and that is what gets him intotrouble. It happens just because there are no limits to what he woulddo for the man he loves. Also, his imagination and creativity isendless. There are not as many people who would do the same for thosewho we love.Though it is very funny, featuring fresh humor which is based more inthe situations than actual jokes and funny one-liners, it is just assad. It is even tragic. I guess that is the way with life: after flyinghigh there comes a low fall. Since the movie is based on actual events, there is no alternative ending. But I want to say: let's not get sad!Let's look at this movie as a celebration of life and love. It is awonderful, but in the end heart-breaking love story. To conclude I want to point out the outstanding performance of the twomain actors – Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey. I don't have a large enoughvocabulary to describe how much I enjoyed it. For Carrey it is not atypical part, but he does wonders with it. I wish we would see him moreoften in movies like this (I mean smart and deep). His comedyexperience brings new quality to the drama genre. However he is a firstrate actor, who makes us laugh and cry, and that is why we love him nomatter what movie he is in. McGregor is equally good. The fact is theyboth make us believe when we watch the movie and that is the testimonyof how great they really are.

A surprising departure for Carrey - a pleasant as usual character selection for MacGregor

Saw this at Sundance and was very pleased and satisfied to have had theopportunity to view it for it was sold out. This is definitely a detourfor Carrey whom is mostly known for doing commercial fare. It isrefreshing to see big stars indulge in what would usually be performedby actors without the A grade stature. What really impressed me werethe very explicit and heavy sex scenes and romantic moments between MacGregor and Carrey. They felt real and tender. I know this film wasgoing to cause waves because even though I watch independents all thetime I as surprise to see two A list actors go at it sexually the wayboth these actors do in "Phillip Morris". I hope this film is taken asan example for other A listers to follow in creating other reallyoriginal and daring works. Specially applaud Europa, Luc Besson's filmcompany for putting together such and abrasive and risky subjectmatter.

EXCELLENT MOVIE...

This review is from: I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD) Jim Carrey was always making over the top funny stories BUT this is entirely different, even for him. Yeah there were some scenes that werent so funny(dressing in lady shorts and ankle boots just to name one)but overall, I like it and it was worth the wait. Some people have hard time with it BUT I say this is better and Jim will always be better than Will Farrell or even Steve Carrell in every and each way possible! Kudos Man

A Rare Treat

This movie left us with a real smile on our faces as we left the cinema (we saw it in Cologne, Germany in Oct.). Jim Carrey has turned out to be a gifted actor in all genres, not just comedy, and he makes the story come to life. You really cheer his character in all of his guises. Based on a true story, this character is hard not to love, even though he is a con artist, but one with a heart of gold.He is living a dull, typical Southern US conservative, fundamentalist life-style until he is confronted with his mortality in a car wreck and decides life is too precious to waste living someone else's idea. He really is a brilliant guy and can succeed even in jobs he has no training for. His prison stints are great and his relationship with Ewan McGregor's character is sweet and heartwarming. Carrey's devotion is heroic in what he is willing to do so they can be together - inside prison or out, whatever it takes. It's a rare Hollywood movie that has so much 'character'. A love story that isn't the same boring one replayed over and over with the same boring characters. Something really different for a change. Just proves that Hollywood can make something out of the mold and do it well, just as we were about to give up completely on the boring, bland, predictable Hollywood crap. Bravo! If you really enjoy a good movie, go see this. It's great!

Great Movie

This review is from: I Love You Phillip Morris (DVD) This movie was better than I expected. I thought it was a great comedy/drama and (dare I say) romance. Yes, I would say this was a great romance. I felt it, I loved it. I guess some of the reviewers couldnt really get with the idea of the two men in love. But I got it, I thought it was sweet the way Jim Carey's Character and Ewan McGregors character fell in love. I especially loved the scene when Jim got taken away and Ewan ran out to the yard to tell him that he loved him. I seriously loved this movie. I thought it would be offensive -the way certain films love to make gay characters just look ridiculous, but this was fantastic and funny. Jim Carey was still Jim Carey, and Ewan McGregor -who I love as an actor, still used his phenomenal talents. I would classify this as a gay love story -one reviewer gave this movie only one star because he didnt dig the gay aspect. The fact that it is based on a true story is hilarious, and yet tragic. This guy was a genius. I recommend this movie just for the sheer entertainment of watching how this guy kept escaping prison. So anyway, GREAT MOVIE, I bought it after I Netflix'd it and I cant wait for it to arrive in the mail so I can watch it again.

Lightweight but a great deal of fun! Carrey & MacGregor are delightful.

Some have suggested that Jim Carrey is poorly cast in the role of Steven Russell, the con artist whose story is told in I LOVE YOU, PHILLIP MORRIS. It's been said that his performances are too glossy, too on-the-surface for us to believe him as lovestruck and will to do everything and anything for that love.I believe he is IDEALLY cast because of that. It's true that Carrey is not a classically trained actor...he is just very good at faking emotion (lots of actors do that, of course). But think about one of his most acclaimed performances, as Andy Kaufmann in MAN ON THE MOON. Kaufmann was a cipher, a man who deliberately avoided showing his real self by faking one "public persona" after another until he had no real persona at all. Carrey was pitch perfect. In PHILLIP MORRIS, he plays a gay man who initially lives a lie of being straight. He also joins the police force, not because he wants to fight crime, but as an avenue to getting access to paperwork that will show him who is real mother is. (And when he finally meets her, she slams the door on him. He was the middle child, and he wants to know why she kept her first child and her third, but not him.) Eventually, he amicably ends his marriage and perhaps over-compensates by living a lavish Key West lifestyle...flamboyantly gay. He funds this lifestyle elaborate con games. The way Carrey plays Russell, we're never sure if Russell is actually a little self-deluded and half believes the cons...or is he just so good at them because there's no real Steven Russell inside the body. This disconnect from reality allows Carrey to jump everywhere emotionally with great facileness but we also never know when or if what we're seeing is really what Steven Russell is feeling. I liked this. Does this man have any self-insight, or is he faking everything...even love? For when he is sent to jail, he falls BIG TIME for a fellow inmate, Phillip Morris (Ewan MacGregor). The feeling is mutual...or is it. Certainly, Morris loves Russell. Does Russell really love Morris, or is he just fulfilled in some way by being loved, and thus will do anything to keep winning the approval. And does it matter? They both seem happy with each other.Eventually, both are on the outside, and the question becomes, will Carrey go straight, or will his desire to keep Morris living in the lap of luxury drive him to further cons? The answer is not hard to guess, and where the film goes from there is too much fun for me to ruin now.In reality, although based on a true story, the entire film lives at an exaggerated, slightly fake level. It's just so hard to believe Steven Russell did all the things the movie says he did. (Although apparently he did!). But it strikes such a rich tone that frankly the film is a blast from beginning to end. Russell has seemingly endless depths of trickery that he can go to...and Carrey plays the role with gusto. "Gusto" is a word I seldom trot out...but it is SO appropriate here. He's having a ball playing a guy having a ball. And MacGregor is a delight as Morris. He's filmed in such a way that he practically glows. He's slightly fey, slightly effeminate...but it never struck me as a caricature. We DO believe he loves Russell. There are plenty of plot hi-jinks throughout the film...including one of the funniest and cleverest prison breaks since SHAWSHANK. It's certainly quite entertaining just at that level. But watching these two guys absolutely grab the screen is the enduring pleasure. And yes, there is plenty of relatively graphic smooching and sex in the film. I say "relatively" because if what we saw was between a man and a woman, we'd scarcely bat an eye. But because it's two men, some of the physicality is a bit surprising to see in a mainstream movie. Carrey & MacGregor play it with nary a wink or a hesitation...and thus their relationship has real spark. It's sexy and fun and romantic. The film is too lightweight and frothy to really be great...but it is a wonderfully good time nonetheless, and should be enjoyed by any adult audience not afraid to see Carrey and MacGregor do some serious smooching.

"Do some time with the one you love"

Steven Russell is happily married to Debbie, and a member of the localpolice force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment ofhis life. Steven becomes open about his homosexuality and decides tolive life to the fullest - even if it means breaking the law. I have to admit I did not research this movie, I do not watch thetrailer, nor did I hear about this movie. I saw it on Netflix andsimply clicked play. WOW! Did not expect that... This film is awesome.I did not see the film being about homosexuality, a thing I have noproblem with it's just I don't enjoy those types of films. But this onewas quite amazing. Jim Carrey was really daring with the movie as he inhe plays a gay person who lives on con-artistry. He then meets PhilipMorris, a guy who he falls in love with. Yeah, this film sounds like aload of crap, as would I say. But it is really something else. It'sdaring to come out there but it really did. The comedy is really not mycup of tea. It reminds me of British humor, which can sometimes befunny but mostly not. But that's not what the film really is trying tosay. I really liked it and I should recommend this to someone who islooking for something new. 8/10.

Alternately funny and heartbreaking

Evidently at least some of this was based on real events that took place mainly in Texas. A con man falls in love with an inmate, springs him, and keeps ending up in jail over and over because he cannot just stay on the straight path with a decent, honest job. Carrey and MacGregor are very convincing as the couple in this odd comedy that is sometimes very sad.

tomlawless3 (2012-05-05 18:51)

A fantastic film with wonderful performances from Carrey and McGregor

This is one of those films that you will never forget seeing, and for anumber of reasons. Firstly the story, true or not, is engaging, funnyand contains some great characters. It allows for Carrey to excel atwhat he does best, which is to experiment with his own character. Whilesomewhat unbelievable, the story is, like it or not, engaging and itholds one's interest. Carrey plays a, shall we say, "actively" gay manwith good humour without being too vulgar; although the vivid,no-holds-barred buggery scenes may be a little too much for someviewers! They had me cringing but Carrey manages to make it funny andlight hearted. It is a film relatively light on the kind of laugh-out-loud humour thatwe're used to seeing from Carrey, but the more films I see him in themore I respect him as a genuinely well rounded comic actor. He hasmatured well over the years, but his childish mischievous tendenciesnever truly left him and it is shown wonderfully in this movie, reallytaking the content to the next level without overpowering theconsistently engaging storyline. As for Ewan McGregor, the effort that he clearly put into this rolemore than paid off and he was utterly convincing and a perfect supportfor Carrey. These two seemed like the most unlikely pairing for anyfilm, let alone one of this nature; which is precisely why I just hadto see it! This movie is a must see for all who like a good laugh andappreciate when a film tugs and throws you around emotionally, fromlaughing hysterically to feeling genuinely glum and back again. The waythe film perfectly captures tragedy, heartbreak, loss and pain isimmersing. I found myself feeling privileged to have witnessed a good, solid piece of film making that had me laughing, but ended soeloquently and respectfully. Then BAM! Carrey comes right back and theplot totally doubles back on itself! Fantastic stuff...This film left me sat in my cinema seat with a big grin on my face, just desperate for it to be released on DVD. It will go down as a cultfavourite in comedy film-making. It's got everything: love, loss, hilarity, a fantastic script, wonderful characters, fine acting, cons, swindles, betrayals; you name it! Well worth a watch if you want to seea new, genuinely fabulous film that doesn't cost about £15 to watch andisn't some over-hyped "blockbuster", all just because it's in 3-D...Oh by the way; if you're a homophobe, don't bother watching this. Justthough I'd mention...
