JUST DOT DO IT

I sat through 10 mins and had to leave. Truly a ***** heap of a movie. The acting is something off USA day time tv. The plot is far from original and so predictable it will make you sick. If you like rubish movies, you will like this. Enoy!

Wow!

It's Complicated is one of the best movies ever. I saw this movie not once but twice.Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin play a couple who have been divorced for ten years and they have three grown children together. Jane played by Meryl Streep owns a thriving bakery and has an amicable relationship with her ex-husband Jake played by Alec Boldwin who is now married to a younger woman. when their son graduates from college, Jane and Jake have dinner together and that means drinks and they wind up sleeping together and Jane is mortified by the act the just did. When they get back from New York Jane want to redo her kitchen and that brings us to Steve Martin as Adam who is recently divorced,is an architect who falls for Jane.

Terrible Script

This movie is a chic flick that is custom-tailored to the insecuritiesof older women (obviously the target audience). It reduced AlecBaldwin's role to a woman's cliché about men, in that all it takes isone great lay and they fall in love. He isn't a person but rather aprop without a personality. The script is garbage written from awoman's point of view in that protagonist (Streep) shouldn't beaccountable for any of her actions: 1. Baldwin leaves Streep for abimbo (his fault), 2. Baldwin marries the bimbo after the bimbo screwsaround and has another man's child (so Baldwin and Streep are notaccountable to the young family they are about to destroy), 3. Baldwincourts Streep after Streep tries to renounce (again making Streepblameless), 4. Oh what the hell, it's OK to have an affair as she wasmarried to Baldwin before, so who is to blame? (story premise), 5.Meryl's friends all exalt and act happy that she's having an affair, even before they realize it's with her ex-husband (Who can blame her?She isn't accountable as she needed sex). In the battle of the sexes, men complain that women have no sense of accountability. This script isshamelessly contrived, and provides an unintended support of thatfrequent male complaint. What compelled me to watch the movie was the cast, as I greatly admireMeryl Streep and the comic genius of Steve Martin. Yet they were bothwasted as the movie lacked humor and insight. The script approached theinsecurities of an older woman from an insincere, self-serving andmanipulative point of view. Film allows us to examine our insecuritiesfrom the point of view of the character, and we learn much aboutourselves by the honesty. For example, what makes older Woody Allenmovies charming is that they are filled with self-obsessed insecurity, but he always attacked his insecurities with honesty and humor, whichyielded laughs and insight. This movie lacked the courage, convictionand humor to address the definition of aging femininity within thecontext of relationships. I think a wonderful movie could beconstructed along those lines, and given the aging population base itcould be a hit at the box office.

It's Complicated the movie

This review is from: It's Complicated (DVD) I LOVE Meryl Streep in everything she does. This movie was fun. Steve Martin is great! It would have been a better film if someone other than Alec Baldwin had been in it. And, seeing him all hairy and half naked was a REAL TURNOFF!!!

Outstanding Movie

This review is from: It's Complicated (DVD) This movie was hysterical! Normally NOT a fan of Meryl Streep or Alec Baldwin (but a huge fan of Steve Martin), we still thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

Mild sedative filled with a good run of giggles and the frightening aim of the A-list cast. Nancy Meyers would be wise to keep corralling this type of acting pedigree. It makes her merlot-stained screenplays more palatable than they have any right to be.

Nancy Meyers' latest confection is like a rich dessert that tastes good to start with but gradually leaves you feeling overstuffed.

Fabulous Watch!

Meryl and Alec play a divorced couple who are brought back together forone of their son's graduation. Alec, married again to a much youngerwoman, realizes he still feels something for Meryl and so they begin tosee each other secretly all the while Steve Martin (an architect) alsotakes a fancy to Meryl and I think you can imagine the mayhem thatensuesFirstly, I have a read a number of reviewers here complaining aboutthis movie being about "all white, perfect people"...so? Where does itsay a movie has to have black people, Hispanics, Asians and so on?Please, leave your racist ideas at the door! Now, I thought the movie was terrific (and mind you, I'm 19)! MerylStreep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin are three legends who cometogether perfectly here and the chemistry between Baldwin and Meryl isoutstanding! Apparently one reviewer said all three of these actors are"overrated"!? Forgive me but this is simply garbage; who might youbetter suggest? Zac Efron? Yeah right. The movie worked really well because it was a light-hearted storybrought together by lovable actors with a good sense of humor. Thismovie really lets you unwind and just enjoy every minute of it! Forgetthe 6.7 rating on IMDb, do yourself a favor; pop a bag popcorn, beg, borrow or steal this movie and let yourself be entertained!

Awesome

This review is from: It's Complicated (DVD) Two actors at their best - this movie makes my sides split and then again makes me cry all at the same because it is so similar to real life. I will watch this one over and over again! Normally I'm not a fan of Steve Martin at all, but he's pretty good in this one.

J. R. Jones (2012-05-08 23:08)

Streep's dilemma is handled well enough for the movie to accumulate some gravitas as it nears the two-hour mark.

Tony Medley (2012-05-08 03:29)

The only person in the cast who knows how to portray comedy in film is John Krasinski...only when he is on screen does the movie come alive, and that's not enough.

Short stop

This review is from: It's Complicated (DVD) The dvd was really, really scratched up and dirty. When I viewed the dvd, the dvd played for less than a minute and stop playing. I had to clean the dvd, three times before it played. The company that sent me the dvd had to know that it was all scratched up and did not play. I will not order another dvd again.

A fun and sweet romantic comedy that lands comfortably on the smart side of vacant, along the way offering a pleasant and satisfying diversion for the grown-ups in the room.

Moving, mature exploration of ex-couples' second shot at romance

'It's Complicated's clever opening scene introduces us to Jane and Jakewho are attending an anniversary party for old friends and appear to bemarried. But soon Jake is joined by his sexy younger wife, Agness, andwe realize Jane is the odd woman out. To make matters worse, heryoungest daughter (Jane has four grown children) is now moving out ofthe nest and Jane is all alone in the house. Her children are concernedfor her but she reassures them that she'll be fine. Jane pours herselfinto her work and when the head of the architectural firm comes by withnew blueprints for an addition to Jane's house, she's not listeningwhen he introduces her to Adam who actually is the project manager, responsible for all the new designs. Finally, Jane meets with a bunchof her lady friends who urge her to start dating again. The break into 'Act 2' occurs when Jane and Jake are booked in at thesame hotel to attend their youngest son's graduation from college. WhenJake's hyperactive son from his second marriage takes ill, Jake findshimself at the hotel alone. The estranged couple suddenly findthemselves opening up after all these years over a series of drinks.Streep and Baldwin are at the top of their game as they become more andmore inebriated, leading to their first sexual encounter since theirdivorce. We see the aftermath of said encounter with Jake admittingthat he had a great time but with Jane expressing her doubts (not tomention barfing in the bathroom after having one too many). Note howStreep is hunched over the toilet bowl and we suddenly cut to thecollege commencement, a great little edit. I also loved how thesensitivity of the characters are brought out—Jane whistles as theyoungest son appears in his cap and gown but suddenly bursts into tears(with Jake glancing at her); later it's Jake's turn to get allsensitive while eating dinner with Jane and all the children. Hepraises Jane and admits that he wasn't there emotionally for the kids.He gets all misty-eyed but the son urges him to 'pull himselftogether'. Jake caresses Jane with his foot under the table, expressinghis continued interest in her. The children make it harder for Jane byadmitting that it's so nice to have the family all together again. After the graduation is over, Jane fails to respond to Jake's emails sohe comes over to her house and begins making a pitch for her again. He's full of witty lines such as "life is short" and "people in nursinghomes with plants live longer" and she responds by stating that shenever realized what a good lawyer he was. More witty lines andsituations: Jake says this is "very French of us"; Jane reveals to herfriends she's having an 'affair' with "Agness Adler's husband"--and herfriends squeal with delight! At first the affair has a positive effecton Jane's mood; an employee asks "what did you do to your hair" and sheorders him to "change the breakfast menu".Things eventually begin to go sour when Jake gets jealous over Jane'sinterest in Adam. Before you know it, Jake is spying on Jane and Adamas they have an innocent date at Jane's home. Perhaps the weakest partof the movie is Steven Martin's character. He's such a dour, wussy guydue to his inability to get over his divorce that wonders what Janesees in him at all. Most of the scenes of Jane and Adam's burgeoningromance are slow-moving until things pick up when the two end upgetting stoned on marijuana at son Luke's graduation party. Agnessnotes that Jake and Jane are unusually close as they dance together andthis leads to the second act crisis where Jake splits up with hissecond wife. Interspersed between the graduation party scene and Jakeshowing up at Jane's home, begging to be taken back by her, is thatunnecessary, long-winded encounter between Jane and Adam, preparing abatch of chocolate croissants.Things get back on track with Jake's revelation that he's left Agnessand the children are all in tears as they can see their father iscracking up. They pressure Jane into letting their father stay over, even though she knows it's not a good idea. Note the wonderfultransition between Jake in tears, the kids' emotional reaction and Jakeat the dinner table, completely comfortable in the family setting, gorging himself on a sumptuous meal.I found the scene leading to the climax, where Jake parades himselfbutt naked in front of Jane's laptop, thus temporarily shatteringAdam's dreams of a relationship with Jane, to be a bit over the top.But everything after that works oh so well. Jane and Jake's childrenreaction after they learn of their parents' affair is perfect: they alldrive off, leaving Jane staring up at the rustling leaves in the trees,as she falls asleep on the couch. And then Jane pulls herself togetherthe next and goes over tor reassure her children that she needed to"experiment" to see if there was any 'spark' left between her and Jake. She reveals the spark isn't there anymore and with her honesty with thechildren, Jane restores the trust between them and herself. The conclusion is poignant: Jake is waiting for Jane back at her homeand they have one last conversation on the swing. Jane sums it all upwhen she acknowledges that they both "blew it the first time around".Jake finally faces the reality that Jane has moved on. The heartfelttheme of the movie becomes manifest: in order to grow, people sometimesmust change, which also may involve some kind of loss.

Nauseating

The scene where Jane (Streep) confesses all to her adult children whoare all tucked under a bed sheet, beside each other, wide eyed, andshocked, summarizes everything that is awful with this movie. It isboth immature and weird. Adults behaving like children - or adolescents- is what happens throughout this predictable and mind numbingexperience, and is why it is so banal. The terrain of divorce and romantic/sexual love could be engaging andwitty, with real adult dialog and intelligence, but Streep's Janegiggles like a little girl; she reacts to the men rather than be theagent of her life, and the male characters are like archetypes from asupermarket self help guide. There is nothing original or intelligent happening here. Instead it isreplete with Baby Boomer sentimentality, incomplete emotionaldevelopment, and worst of all, lacks any dramatic sparkle.

A- User Rating??? Are you kidding?

What a predictable movie for bored females who have nothing else to do on date nights...I can't believe that Yahoo users gave this an A- rating...you've got to be kidding.

Joanna Langfield (2012-05-02 21:36)

Really? Complicated? Nothing so complex going on here at all, in what is essentially another chapter in the Nancy Meyers brand.

(2012-05-02 03:07)

good performances, chemistry strained a bit

This review is from: It's Complicated (Amazon Instant Video) I was ready to be amused and entertained as we love Alex Baldwin, Meryl Streep, and Steve Martin. The ensemble doesn't quite work and the sparks are few. light weight and only somewhat enjoyable. Meryl is appealing on all fronts and does not appear to have had face surgery which makes her more appealing for her comfort with herself.
