| Storyline | Details the actions of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, who takes it upon himself to investigate the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. Garrison is extremely suspicious of the official story presented by the FBI, and what he already knows and what he subsequently learns lead him to suspect that there is more to the story than the public is being told. |
I don't understand why people gave this movie such a hard time when it first came out. Some people saw it as an awful piece of Stonian propaganda; I saw it as a film about a man's theories on the JFK assassination and his quest for the truth--not necessarily, THE truth, but Truth in general. (To you historians--lighten up! However, I will agree with you about the "enhanced" Zabruder film --a complete and total abominable fabrication.) Whether you disagree with me or not is besides the point, however--politics aside, JFK is still a brilliantly made, compelling and breathtaking film about a particular point in American history (the mid-1960's) that's rarely been captured on film--of when people started questioning those very institutions that up until then had seemed rock solid. If you missed that, then I really feel sorry for you, 'cuz you missed a really great film.
Truthfully, I was a little disappointed with the movie. But once I gotsettled in, it all kind of fit in. It's a good movie. But not quitewhat I expected. But that doesn't necessarily a bad film. It's a greatfilm. But not the type of films I'm usually appealed to.But if any film should be watched by the whole American public, this isit. This is probably the most important film for Americans to watch. Weshould all know the truth. The truth about what happened to John F.Kennedy on that fateful day.The film will probably not leave you feeling satisfied but moreinformed. This movie is more like a documentary.
For people with an interest in the assassination of President Kennedy thisfilm is a very good alternative to the far from perfect Warrenreport. With excellent performances from the entire cast, this movie combines thethoughts and theories of Jim Garrison and those presented in Jim Marrs'book.Still this is basically Oliver Stone's own ideas as to what happened thatday in Dallas and in the period leading up to it. Most people know Stoneforhis passion for the Vietnam War and even in this film we get a sub plotabout this subject. But above all, this is a movie about a lost innocence. The politicalinnocence and a hope for a better future both on political and racialissues. It's the story of a country with big problems and a refusal todealwith these. One could argue that the JFK we are presented to is far to perfectconsidering the knowledge we have today. But he shall not be seen as aperson but as the personification of new dreams for America. In this lightthe assassination was a terrible thing and as I see it that is what thisfilm is all about. And of cause one man's quest for the truth. Jim Garrison, who isbrilliantlyportrayed by Costner. And it is a nice touch to have Garrison himselfappearas Earl Warren. The film is a must for everyone fascinated by the myth known as JFK andforthose who like movies with a message.
Despite the controversial and verbose nature of the material, not to mention lenghty running time, Oliver Stone's JFK is a riveting dramatizaition of various conspiracy theories regarding the Kennedy's assassination
Whether you buy Stone´s theory regarding the murder of JFK or not, this isone of the best movies ever made. The Director´s Cut runs for 3 hours and 17minutes and Stone never lets go of your attention during those 3+ hours. Ihave read neither Garrissons nor Prouty´s books, but it´s an amazing amountof facts that are squeezed into these 3 short hours. The momentum of this movie is outstanding. Dramaturgically it´s one of thebest movies I have ever seen, much due to the amazing editing by AcademyAward winners Joe Hutshing and Pietro Scalia. The structure of timelayersfeels almost like a cubist painting by Picasso where you´re able to seeevery dimension at the same time.Another well deserved Oscar went to one of my favourite cinematographers ofall time, Bob Richardson. Similar to Natural Born Killers, anotherStone-Richardson collaboration among many, he plays with various filmstocksand formats, fooling your eye to the extent that the re-enactment of JFK´smurder feels almost documentary. The overhead lighting at Antoine´sRestaurant, the shifts and fades when Garrison is reading the Warren Report, the use of light hot-spots giving you that white "fuzz".... The list goeson and on.The cast is flawless. This is really an ensemble movies although Costner, who´s never been better before or since, is the major star. The moviebenefits from not being packed with A-list stars, which I believe would havereduced the sense of "reality". It feels as if Oldman was born to play LeeHarvey Oswald. Pesci delivers, as always. I get just as frustrated withRooker´s character every time I see the movie, a perfectcasting. As was not surprised when this movie did not win the Academy Award for BestMovie, since it´s far to politically incorrect for Hollywood´s taste. Butfor the life of me, I can´t understand how they could overlook Stone´sdirecting. This movie is a definite must-see.
My father took me to see this when I was a little kid, I was 11. Itscared the life out of me. I remember feeling paranoid & intenselyfrightened the ride home & for days after. It had a very profoundeffect on my as a child that carried over into my adult years. Istarted questioning absolutely everything I heard, I started looking upeverything I could. My grades went up because of it. When it came outon VHS I watched it over & over again, it opened up an obsession forme. I can't recall any other movie I saw as a child that had such aprofound influence on me. Now, as an adult, I can still watch it andsometimes get the same cold feeling of fear running up my spine.
What more is there to say? It's certainly not an overblown tripe! It's as close to the truth as can be. It strikes me that that negative reviewers NEVER include their e-mail address. THEY must be real paranoid!
Director Oliver Stone gives the JFK assassination the royal treatment, over three hours worth of running time,in his blockbuster 1991 shockerof a movie "JFK" in it getting to the bottom to who in fact not onlyshot the president but who was both behind and planned theassassination and cover up that followed it. It was of all things theClay Shaw, Tommy Lee Jones, trial that Stone used in his movie "JFK" tototally disprove the by now in the garbage can, in that almost no onebelieves it anymore, Warren Commission Report on the assassination. Inthat the Clay Shaw trial was the first and only trial that involved theJFK assassination with Shaw, a successful New Orleanesbusinessman, being charged with being, a planner not shooter, behind it.The movie succeeds in disproving the Warren Commission but fallssomewhat flat on its face in trying to connect a number of USGovernment agencies, like the CIA, the Mafia anti-Castro Cubans as wellas Vice President Johnson as being somehow behind JFK's assassination. It was like Stone trowing a plate of spaghetti on the wall and see whatwould stick. Still Stone does a masterful job in waking the public upto the discrepancies as well as out right lies that they've been fedover the years by major members of the US media that Lee Harvey Oswald,Gary Oldman, was the lone nut assassin or the assassin at all. It'sthree years after JFK was killed that New Orleans D.A Jim Garrison,Kevin Costner, decided to reopen the case in that Oswald originally wasin the city, as a Marxist Communist activist, the summer before JFK wasmurdered. Oswald was also closely associated with a number of peoplewho wanted President Kennedy dead and made no bone in hiding theirdislike of him.As Garrison uncovers evidence that shows Oswlald was not what the mediaas well as the FBI and Warren Commission made him out to be keywitnesses to what happened that fateful afternoon in Dallas Texas,November 22 1963, start to either clam up disappeared or meet anunexpected end in life. One of them is the wacko David Ferrie, JoePesci, who was in the same US civil air patrol unit with Oswald back inthe mid 1950's when Oswald was still in his teens. Ferrie made anunexpected trip to Dallas to go duck hunting with a number of hisfriends the day that JFK was shot and left the very same evening! Wasit to shoot JFK not ducks that Ferrie & Co were really interested in?It was through Ferrie as well as convicted male hooker Willie O'Keefe,Kevin Bacon, that eventually lead to Shaw in his being suspected ofhaving foreknowledge to the JFK assassination. In that all three,Ferrie O'Keefe & Shaw, had a mutual acquaintance with non other thenLee Harvey Oswald! JFK's convicted in absentia assassin, since he wasdeceased and couldn't defend himself, by the Warren Commission! As interesting as the movie is it's the last 15 or 20 minutes thatreally hit home and make an impression on the audience when D.A JimGarrison makes his final summation to the jury. It's then that all theBS half truths lies shyster talk and inconsistencies in what happenedon November 22, 1963 becomes apparent to those of us watching the filmas well as those in the courtroom. Even though Garrison doesn't end upconvicting Clay Shaw in his part in the JFK assassination he does infact prove that we've, the American public, had been had or conned intobelieving what the US Government and Warren Commission told us thetruth about the "facts" in the JFK assassination without as much asbothering to check any of the facts or evidence out! Which in fact D.AJim Garrison not only did but in his Don Quixote like determinationattempted to, against overwhelming odds, and proved to the jury! Whodespite finding Shaw innocent agreed that a conspiracy was involved inthe assassination of JFK. P.S It was ironic as well as a stroke of genius for Stone to cast thereal Jim Garrison in the film as non other as Chief Justice Earl Warrenwho comes across as if he's either brain dead or suffering from theadvance stages of Alzhimer Disease in his robotic and zombie likeperformance. It was Warren and his Warren Commission that Jim Garrisonwas out to prove was either totally inept or criminally irresponsiblein covering up the true facts behind the JFK assassination!
I am a student of film, and scriptwriting. I've learned about lighting, budget cost, directing, and scriptwriting. I've even written scripts that are set in history. Ya go in cocky thinkin', yeah, I'll make this movie so historically accurate, everthing will be precise down to the very minute! But after printing out eight pounds of paper on every small detail, you start to realise that nobody, and I mean nobody can make a decent historically accurate film without losing your mind! I've very carefully researched the assasination and I came across a very professional web site. Other web sites are very passonate, but this one was very by-the-book: something like "I believe this, but not that, and here's twelve pages of info showing why," kind of thing. I E-mailed him and asked what he thought of Oliver Stone's JFK; he said he'd give it a C+. Based on my troubles, that's really good!I have to make this clear: JFK is ENTERTAINMENT based on fact. Making a good story is hard enough, but researching facts to back it up is going to tear apart your brain! Do we have to spell it out for you people! The film encourages you to YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Donald Sutherland even says it in the film: "But don't trust me; do your own work, your own thinking." Their are people out their that think they're so smart saying, "oh look, that didn't happen in real life; I guess the movie is garbage, then." I've seen it with "JFK", with "The Passion of the Christ", and even the fictional, "Lord of the Rings.""Oh, the bullet that hit Kennedy was a tumbling bullet and that's why the bullet looks so perfect," they say. Let me ask you something: have you ever seen a tumbling bullet? They're flat, flat as a pancake. As if a steam roller went over it. And this bullet supposedly went through several bones. For all we know the bullet was squished AFTER it was collected (just a little, so no one will notice. Shhhh). I bet you skeptics don't know what frame of the Z-film the "magic bullet" hit the president? What's the name of the document stating the withdrawl of ALL U.S. troops from Vietnam by 1965? What mafia kingfish did Johnny Roselli have conections with? Do you even know who Johnny Roselli is? What about Beverly Oliver? Jim Marrs? James Tague? Perry Russo? What velocity was Oswald's rifle? WHAT WAS Oswald's rifle? Where did he buy it? Who's James Files? This film is about judging for yourself. Check it out on the internet, buy a book, then buy the other guy's book and compair. The more I think of the supression of this subject by the media today, the more I realise that this is not a 40 year old subject. It's here, it's now! It's in the TV! It's in the walls! It's on the radio! It's out the window! It's in the newspapers! It's just a question of who's willing to see it. Keven Costner said it best "Don't you think THIS, has something to do with THAT! CAN'T YOU SEE!" Who cares that there were no women on Jim Garrison's legal team (unlike in the movie). Who cares that Garrison never called Clay Shaw a liar right to his face(dramatic licence). Who cares that Garrison's closing statement was a composite of the speech he DID GIVE, lines in his book, and Stone's own additions(proper pacing of a story). That little stuff doesn't matter! The Warren Commision is a myth, and Oliver Stone's JFK is anti-myth.
JFK is an excellent movie that really makes you think.
This is an amazing movie. It keeps your complete attention for threehours. Comparisons to Triumph of the Will and I am Cuba are unfounded, I believe. The film never says "this is what happened to JFK", but it is one man'sbelief of what happened on the day JFK died. Triumph was made forpropaganda purposes solely and absolutely. The performances in this film are unanimously magnificent. Kevin Costneris great, if unremarkable in his role. My favourite performance belongs toGary Oldman, for his stunning turn as Lee Harvey Oswald. There are no easy answers in this film. Whether you believe inn OliverStone is up to you, but this film stands alone as a powerful movie, and Iplaced it #2 for 1991. The score, direction, writing, and editing work seamlessly together tomake a fascinating film.
what can i say about this movie? it can capture you from the verybeginning, i think its one of the best REALITY movies out there,Costner at his best and the others gave their best for the movie, its asurprise that this movie is not on the top 250 films of all time, in myopinion, this movie is better than some of those movies in the list, but as i sad, its my opinion :) for whoever who watched it, tell uswhat you think forwhoever who didn't,i suggest you do for whoever whosnot interested, well, stick to whatever your seeing *god that soundslame*A.
I LOVE this movie. The first reason I like it is courtroom drama. I reallylike courtroom drama and legal mumbo jumbo, and this movie has plenty ofthat. Also, the performances are good, especially Gary Oldman. It'sactually scary how much he looks like Lee Harvey Oswald. After seeing thismovie, I wonder how much of the facts in it are actually facts. Because ifeven half of the stuff in the movie is true, then how can anyone believethat Oswald shot JFK. This movie really makes you think, but it is alsoimmensely entertaining. My score-10.
This is, in itself, a good movie. But much of it is highly dubious. Let me first say that I'm not one of the few who believes in the 'lone-nut', 'single-bullet' theories. Except for maybe Jack Ruby, but anyway. I fairly agree with the forensics(the "Hows"), I just totally disagree with the conspiracy theory behind it(the "Whys?").To start with, the real John Fitzgerald Kennedy was not what he was portrayed to be. First of all, much of it was based on ineundoes, half-truths, and mere speculations. I think Stone's films 'Platoon' and 'Nixon' fairly accurate enough(both of which I loved). But it is highly unlikely that the conspiracy was the anti-Communistic scheme as shown in the movie. As mentioned, JFK was not the left-progressive martyr so portrayed. He was a strong Cold Warrior and had no intentions of withdrawing from Vietnam. Do I think it was a conspiracy? Yes. But it was most likely a Communist plot by the KGB, Cuba, and various Marxist groups who hated Kennedy. The fact that he was NOT going to end or avert the Vietnam War my have been a good enough motive for them to do it. Lee Harvey Oswald was a stauch Marxist, and in my opinion, he fired from the Book Depository(not delivering the fatal headshot wound from the grassy knoll). But if indead the CIA, etc. were involved all along may have ment that there WERE Communists infiltrating top levels of our gov't(declassified Soviets docs reveal that, McCarthy's shenanigans aside). But this movie insists that it was a right-wing conspiracy out to kill the President. Scary enough I'll admit, but the theory that it was a Communist conspiracy is not only creepier, but more realistic, based on evidence. Was Kennedy a liberal? Of course, but in the centrist-liberal sense. He more than intended to win the Cold War, and who knows? Maybe he could have won the Vietnam War. Anyway, this movie was Stone's(and Garrison's) 'myth' compared to the Warren Report's 'myth'. And this is my 'myth'(a conspiracy of Communists, pro-Castro Cubans, KGB, and pro-Vietcong, anti-VN War)compared to both of the two. At lot people I've talked to tended believe it was a Marxist conspiracy. But who knows? It may have involved our own gov't(or parts of it) all along. Scary.
Oliver Stone is easily the best director of his generation and without adoubt he has made more movies of social relevance than any otherdirector of his generation and this film is the best film he has madeeven better than Platoon or Natural Born Killers and this says alot JFKhas the best cast and best performances of any film of the 1990s thebest performance is easily Gary Oldman as Lee Harvey Oswald. Not onlydoes Oldman literally become Oswald but he becomes Oswald the man. NotOswald the accused assassin you see Oswald interact with his wife Marinawhom he brought back from russia but his relationship with his twoinfant daughters June and Rachel who he loved very much this movie isthe only movie that showed Lee Harvey Oswald as a man not an assassin ora patsy or man posesed by the spirit of Dr. Sam
JFK is a good movie, though not great art or drama.
JFK is one of the most brilliantly crafted movies I've ever seen. It's easyto get lost in the politics of the movie, but NO ONE would have bitched andmoaned about this film had it not been so brilliantly written, directed andphotographed.
This Oliver Stone classic was a lengthy depiction of one of the mostcontroversial presidents in U.S. history, John F. Kennedy. Kennedy wasthe consummate politician who garnered an unprecedented charisma withthe American people by implementing lofty ideology with pragmaticpolitical procedures!! His wife, Jacqeline, was a regal artifact offashion and glamor, and this couple of President and First Lady whichwas labeled as "Camelot", easily elevated into the limelight ofAmerican culture! The Kennedys were American icons who invoked a doggedtenacity for social changes, and dirges of moral outrage, whichtitillated minorities and under privileged Americans!! On November22nd, 1963, when John F. Kennedy was assassinated, it sparked anational uproar with the public perception of nationwide politics!!Sucha pejorative pique mandated the launching of the investigativedocuments by the Warren Commission known as the Warren Report. Nowenters Jim Garrison, (Played by Kevin Costner) who became engrossed inthe factual details involving JFK's death. It was Garrison's ardentadmiration of Kennedy that made his prescient curiosity an obsession. It was not just his responsibilities as a district attorney whichnurtured his persistence, it was also for his own edification that JimGarrison wanted to unearth facts about Kennedy's assassination. Thisentourage of interrogations was all in the hopes that his resolution tothis issue would enhance his conception of the American system ofdemocracy!! Garrison embarked on a series of inquiries concerning JFK'sassassination which were of his own volition!! The Warren Report was anedict by the Johnson Administration as a way of putting a bureaucraticstyle explanation on the aggregate calamity concerning JFK's murder!!Such desultory data enticed the subornation of perjury by numerouspublic officials!! This virulent abuse of due process was tantamount toparading around a flagrant dismissal of democratic justice which waspertinent to the wishes of the American people altogether!! Theinitiative to challenge the findings of the Warren Commission wasmotivated by the fact that subsequent reports contained indiscretionsto the Warren Commission's findings! Amidst the myriad ofmiscalculations in the Warren report was the principle bone ofcontention that more than one bullet was fired. The Communist insurgentwho became the guinea pig for this debacle, Lee Harvey Oswald, ultimately became a target himself, and was assassinated by Jack Ruby! This string of heinous murders involving Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald, culminating with the "magic bullet theory" became a cogent revelationto the American people that the Kennedy assassination was indeed aconspiracy! In view of this whole incident, Dallas became the mostpolitically scrutinized city in the entire world for over two years! The film, "JFK" brandishes all of these occurrences as starkrevelations to the American public. Such an illustration was realisticbecause that is what these precarious occurrences were!! Many nuancesto the assassination of John F. Kennedy became an outlet for depravedintrigue. The film "JFK" illustrates how the south took a lethal andflippant path of trepidation to Kennedy's killing!! The film "JFK"introduced the viewing audience to the debauched proclivities of manysordid reprobates in Dallas and New Orleans!! Such dubious walks oflife demonstrated a social callousness which brought on an onslaught ofpurulent jeremiads as to why the prevailing political spectrum was soconvoluted during this era!! The nefarious characters involved in thewhole Kennedy conspiracy were societal outcasts. A copious quantity ofthem evoked such an ideological ambiguity to their feelings that eventhe cadence to their voices were extremely dehumanizing!! The film"JFK" is tremendously bolstered by incredible acting performances by anenormous number of accomplished actors and actresses. In addition toKevin Costner and Sissy Spacek, other famous stars were: DonaldSutherland, Jack Lemon, Tommie Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Ed Asner, WalterMathiau, and many others!! Oliver Stone does a tremendous job atdirecting this film, as he encompasses a disconcerting aspect ofdemocracy into the entire genre of this movie! I enjoyed this flickmore when I saw it a second time. This movie possesses anon-acknowledgeable realism that satiated my ghoulish perception of thewhole Kennedy affair, and how it revolutionized American Newscoverage!! I have been to Dallas many times, and I can empathize withthe attitudes that Oliver Stone was trying to expedite with this film.I was dining at Morton's Steakhouse in Dallas, which is right next tothe book depository where Kennedy was shot. When I pointed out to aparking valet that this is where John F Kennedy was assassinated, hereplied "Who's John F Kennedy?" Historical events reflect our livesaccordingly! The film, "JFK" effectively portrays the assassination ofJohn F. Kennedy as a tragic escapade which restructured America'spolitical priorities!! I recommend seeing this film, it is up therewith the better American films ever made!! One of the best films of the1990's!!! Definitely!!
Starring Kevin Costner as district attorny Jim Garrison the only man toever make a trial looking at the murder of Kennedy .JFK opens with a haunting montage of real footage of the Kennedy familyand images from America and Cuba of Castro , Kennedy and other worldleaders with a voice over from actor Martin Sheen ( who once playedPresident Kennedy in a TV mini series) then a woman is thrown from acar screaming " don't leave me here come back " but they drive off andshe is taken to hospital where she keeps saying "their going to killKennedy their going to Dallas on Friday their going to kill Kennedy"then it moves to that haunting footage from November 22 1963 of JFK andJackie walking around talking to people and Jackie is given a bouquetof red roses. Then we have footage showing the motorcade going throughDallas people waving, a gun shot is heard and then a CBS news bulletincomes on explaining Kennedy has been shot and then it flicks to NewOrleans and from then on its Kevin Costners show. He is great in thisfilm he delivers his lines well and gives a stunning performance asGarrison .Other stars are Gary Oldman as Lee Harvy Oswald , SissySpacek as Elizabeth Garrison, Tommy Lee Jones as Clay Shaw , Joe Pescias David Ferrie and Donald Sutherland as X the former army official whoassists Garrison with some details about the day. John Williams musicis excellent and stays in the memory Oliver Stone has directed aclassic film I have brought this and recommend it to other people it isworth buying or renting.Although do not take everything in it as thecomplete truth.
Some movies make the statement they are based on true events. Othersclaim the title to be inspired by true events. Stone attempts to do theformer, but ends up doing the latter. This is a good movie. An idealistic man tried to unravel the conspiracyof the assassination of a president, and ends up being thwarted by theconspirators at every step as they cover up their tracks. Stone is avery good director and this movie is no exception. The historicalaccuracy of this film has been debated by very knowledgeable andpassionate people, and I've read enough to find its credibilitylacking, so I am judging this movie as a work of historical fiction -inspired by true events. The death of JFK was taken as a shattering of the myth of Camelot, theend of the 20 years after WW2 when America reigned supreme and baskedunder the sun of its military and economic might. Stone plays upon thissentiment very well, presenting us with a series of "what if's"focusing on what would happen if JFK had lives. An idyllic utopia inwhich there was no Vietnam, where civil rights miraculously spreadacross the land, and several other unrealistic, but very appealingnotions. As a Vietnam veteran, one can understand Stone's passion inmaking this movie. Its rather obvious that he associates the death ofJFK with the start of events that led him to a series of unpleasantevents in his life. Just as one mourns the death of a child because ofthe potential and hopes of the future, so we mourn the death of JFKbased on notions of what could have been. Whether or not JFK could haveaccomplished these things is another matter, but we can hold thisbelief inside that had he lived things would have been better. Stone plays for his audience and his time very well. The Cold War hadjust ended, and we no longer needed the same government that kept theEvil Empire at bay. Documents became declassified, and there was anoverall backlash against the shadowy government - X-files, alienautopsy reports, etc. It was not difficult for Stone to feed upon thisclimate of distrust of the government in presenting his conclusions ina very appealing manner. There is no proof because the conspiratorsdestroyed the truth. For a public just finding out a lot of the thingsthat its government did during the Cold War that was subsequently keptquiet, the killing and cover-up of a president seemed very realistic. As a piece of storytelling, this movie is great. It sucks you in andkeeps going at a mounting pace until its eventual climax where all isrevealed, and nothing is proved. As a piece of political propaganda itsa masterpiece, and should be studied by every filmmaker and politicianas how to take disjointed facts and coincidences and twist themtogether to paint a compelling story that the public would love toswallow up. Did these events happen as shown on the screen? Its possible. Stonehimself admits he took dramatic license in several events, which, ifyou are trying to show a factual and historical story pretty much killsyour credibility from the beginning. More and more time has passed forany one of this apparent legion of conspirators to come forth and makea deathbed confession, and so the veil of conspiracy and cover-up wearsthinner and thinner with each passing day. Surely Cancer Man must begetting tired eliminating witness after witness, document afterdocument. Watch the movie, think about it. There is plenty more to learn aboutwhat happened outside the movie, the JFK movie board itself, and thelinks provided in and of themselves will provide you with moreinformation that you can imagine. But in the end, this is just a movie- inspired by true events.
