| Storyline | Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and his personal trials not that overwhelming. However, one day he makes the simple decision to become a super-hero even though he has no powers or training. |
Are you tired of the same old thing at the movies. Are you tired of thesame old action sequences, often by the same old actors? Are you tiredof being treated like an idiot-of-the-masses by movie businessmen? Thencome to the cinema now and have your spirit renewed by Kick-Ass. Haverestored that long jaded and dead part of the movie going experiencethat you loved (or at least appreciated) so long ago. Over the years, Ihave come to despise over-the-top action sequences, especially whenthey involve an invulnerable macho killing machine. I typically avoidmovies that advertise these, and shake my head in disgust if I findmyself forced to witness them. Can anybody say Rambo IV. However,Kick-Ass, primarily due to Hit Girl (Choloe Moretz) scenes, has broughtback joy to me regarding action scenes. You can say this is due to agimmick in using an 11 year old girl, but that is wrong. It isoriginality and style that has been missing. It is genuine creativitythat is absent. Action scenes have become just canned commodities thatthe movie business judges as a profit vehicle. I just went to my 3rdviewing of Kick-Ass, and I have been more impressed by each viewing. There are many elements in this movie to be appreciated, which otherreviewers have aptly described. I found the father daughterrelationship between Cage and Moretz to be incredibly touching andheartfelt, despite it's ludicrous context. Action sequences are noteven a priority for my movie-going experience. But they are done sowell in this movie, that I had to point this out to others who havebeen jaded and discouraged like me. Go see Kick-Ass for any reason. Butgo see it for these incredible action sequences as well. They areclever, exciting, and stylistic. They are unique in all cinema, especially in this business-jaded age.
I made the mistake (thanks to the advertising) of thinking this wassupposed to be a fun, teen comedy about some hapless youngsters gettingtogether to become crimefighters. I was off by a disturbing amount. Iwas genuinely offended by the violence, killing, horrible language andmaimings. This is not a film for kids, so the R rating is justified, but it's also not funny or cute. Don't let the fun trailers and thatkid from Superlame fool you, this is a gory, violent film. However, ifyou go into it looking for old DVD disc to be used a drink coaster ormini-frizbee, you shan't be let down. I blame the ad campaign andcasting for preparing me for something fun. What I got was somethingtruly nasty like Brokeback Mountain..
I got the chance to see this movie last night (07/01/10') on DVD and itwas great. I heard many great reviews and some mixed reviews but its agreat movie. People need to stop talking movies too seriously and enjoyit for what it is. Granted, its not a movie for everyone, and noteveryone would like it but people need to give it a try and quit at itif they dislike it.It's rare when a movie is seemed better than the trailer and this movieis just one of them. Sure there are a few flaws in other people'sopinion, on how this isn't a plausible superhero movie, and more of awannabe superhero's fantasy. And how the main protagonist Kick-Ass isovershadowed by other characters, mainly Hit-Girl who is soentertaining to watch on screen. Not only is this one of the bestwannabe superhero movie out there, it also beats out a lot of superheromovies. This movie was ballsy and yet very entertaining to watchbecause unlike PG-13 movies, this movie goes all out. They don't holdback on the action and violence, and that is one of the reasons whythis movie was successful. I am glad the distributors decided not todumb this movie down for the younger audiences. Nicolas Cage did agreat job with his role as well but unlucky for him, he character diestowards the end. His daughter, Hit-Girl really stole the show in thismovie and she was definitely the main character towards the end of themovie. It was intense and amazing!
This review is from: Kick-Ass (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Most of the other reviews (and Amazon description) have already gone over the movie/storyline, so I'll focus on just the Blu-Ray itself and my thoughts of the movie.I really enjoyed this one - after hearing much about it while it was in theaters, I had pretty high hopes/expectations for it and I can honestly say I wasn't let down by them (something rare!). I thought the movie was well paced with a good amount of action, comedy and storyline.. plus the characters were great! Something enjoyable by people of most ages (though you might wanna leave the kids out for this one). One of the big surprises here was the Blu-Ray itself.. I guess I wasn't expecting too much, but Lionsgate really delivered. Clarity is incredible and has some nice (saturated) colors throughout. Almost comparable to Gamer and the Crank films on Blu-Ray with just how nice it looked. An easy 5/5 for me.Audio was also top notch - nicely uses all the speakers and will give a home theater a real workout. I believe this was another DTS-HD MA 7.1 track from Lionsgate.Extras don't stop either.. you get the Blu-Ray, DVD and a Digital Copy (for your iPod/iPhone/iPad). I know some don't care for the DVD or Digital copy, but I'm definitely a fan. It's also got the in-movie-experience (always fun and really show off the blu-ray), commentary and some behind the scenes extras.Overall a fantastic package that I have to give a 5/5 to in each category. Movie, Video, Audio, Extras. Check it out!
I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy this film, because it wasrather entertaining. The featured heroes are not exactly what you wouldcall "super", but they do manage to get the job done... eventually! They are actually anti-heroes, so one could say this movie resembles"Sin City" and "V for Vendetta" more than it does "Spiderman","Superman" and other classic heroic films. But the problem is that thecharacters are... how to put it... simply too young to be anti-heroes!In my opinion the best description of this film would be "Dexter'sSummer Camp"... The fact that these "heroes" can kill people left andright without blinking an eye, without feeling any guilt or remorsesimply because their victims were the bad guys, made me think of theshow "Dexter". If the writers of the show decide to follow the books inseason 5, and have Dexter teaching his kids the "family business", thenAstor could be the actual Hit-Girl! This movie shows an 11-year oldgirl kill people as if she is playing a video-game, without at anypoint considering what she is doing might be wrong. And Kick-Asshimself doesn't think twice before executing a few villains, and isonly concerned about making up the appropriate punch lines. It made mewonder: were Quentin Tarantino or Eli Roth involved in the script?I enjoy watching horror films, I love all of Tarantino's work, I haveno problem with violent action, shootouts, vicious fights, evensadistically brutal murder scenes in movies, but "Kick-Ass" actuallydisturbed me! The protagonists seem to lack the basic characteristic ofalmost all comic anti-heroes: the notion that even though homicide maysometimes be an inevitable action they must perform, it is still a mosthorrific crime. Showing children commit multiple murders just for thefun of it, without them ever considering the repercussions of theiractions, is simply wrong.Even so, I believe that most comic book fans will enjoy this movie. Onereason is that it can be argued that "Kick-Ass" is progressive, sinceit deals with a somewhat different breed of anti-heroes; the ones whocan fight crime, indulge their lust for death, and have fun at the sametime! (Just like in "Dexter's Summer Camp")P.S.: My username, CutSickAss, was not inspired in any way by thismovie, it is just a (fitting) coincidence.
I went into Kick-Ass with high hopes. While I despise (and am quitetired of) Mark Millar's showboating, self-hype as well as outrightlies, I'm quite a fan of his work. His two volumes of "The Ultimates" comics are perhaps the singlehighlight at Marvel Comics (for my sensibilities at least) in the lastdecade. Indeed, they are rightfully being used as the inspiration forthe current stock of the "Marvel Heroes" (Iron Man/Cap/Hulk/Thor)films.While Wanted was horribly translated to film, Kick-Ass by allindications is a more faithful adaption. Probably helped by Millarproducing the affair. That said, Kick-Ass, as has been criticised on many occasions byvarious reviewers I've recently read, tries to have its cake and eatit. It tries to force you to accept that this story takes place in ourreal world, and then goes back on this idea and tries to give yousomething out of Kill Bill. Pure fantasy fiction. A bit like Millar inthat respect, promising one thing only to give you something else. Ifused properly this could be quite surprising and fresh, butunfortunately it's ultimately ineffective here as it just confuses thetone and theme and left me unsatisfied with the film as a whole. Is it entertaining? For sure! Does it have a decent soundtrack? Youknow it! Does it feel fresh? Hmmm, kinda. Is it ***hyper reality insanebubblegum superhero antics that changes things forever***? Not quite. There are some seconds where I had thought Millar had elevated comicbook films to a new level...only to lose it a few seconds later.Think of it as Spiderman crossed with Kill Bill. Only less awesome thanthat sounds.I'm interested though, I'll look forward to Millar's nextefforts/translations. Surely he can only improve? In the meantime, ifyou really want a film about what superheroes would be like in reallife, try "Defendor".
Dave Lizewski is a comic reading, invisible to girls, High School geek.Who has a dream to become a superhero, although there is oneproblem...he has no revenge mission, super powers or training...but hedoes have a scuba suit! He embarks on a mission to help fight crime asthe superhero Kick Ass and in one night, as a civilian films himfighting a gang of criminals, he becomes an internet phenomenon. Thisprompts the world to take notice, including other superheroes Hit Girland Big Daddy and the evil gangster Frank D'Amico and his son whorealises the benefits of creating an alter ego. This is an excellent film jam packed with energy, jokes, action andgreat dialogue. The film starts out as a teen comedy in the vein ofSuperbad but quickly goes darker. Director Matthew Vaughn's history hasbeen in gritty English gangster movies and this really shows through inthe middle of the film. Genuinely nasty characters doing nasty thingscould quite easily be at home in Snatch or Layer Cake, make up thebaddies for our superheroes to battle against. As soon as we areintroduced to Hit Girl (an 11 year old knife wielding little ninja),her father Big Daddy (a betrayed ex cop looking for revenge) and RedMist (the baddie alter ego of Frank D'Amico's son) you really start tofeel you are watching a superhero movie. There are some great comicbook references and they really help to remind you this is a superheromovie as at some parts the action is good enough to be a stand alonegangster flick and the jokes good enough for any comedy.Aaron Johnson is great as Kick Ass as he is geeky enough to warm to butedgy enough to be credible, Christopher Mintz-Plasse fresh from McLovinin Superbad is also great as Red Mist and Nicholas Cage is understatedand as he plays the revengeful Big Daddy. But the show is stolen byChloe Moretz as she plays the truly brilliant Hit Girl. I don't thinkmany non animation films have featured such a young assassin and shecertainly takes centre stage and is played brilliantly. The film crosses three genres of teen comedy, gangster movie and comicbook superhero, a sort of 'Super Lock Stock and Three Smoking Batmans'if you like. I'll give you one bit of advice, you need to watch thisfilm, it's cool, energetic and really slick. I can't wait for thesequel planned in 2012.
This movie is very different kind of 'super-hero' flick and provided quiet an entertainment. Everyone played their part well. Chloe Moretz completely stole the show (Angelina, it's OK to be jealous and you should be).One warning though... The fact that there was enough of morbid violence, "F-bomb" was dropped A LOT, and that a high school girl bluntly acknowledges that she would "f--k the Kick-Ass' brains out" (actually a very funny line in the movie), kind of closes the gate to the younger viewers. But otherwise, get popcorn, relax, enjoy, and don't forget to suspend your disbelief.
This review is from: Kick-Ass (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) THis is a great must see movie for all comic fans. I cant get the digital copy to work however, as it continously asks me to enable cookies when I already do have them enabled.
This review is from: Kick-Ass (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Haven't been able to watch the blu ray, but the dvd works and it was a great deal. Thanx a lot.
To the people who have written all over message boards like thesebashing the movie  ENOUGH ALREADY! Your negativity and ruthlesscritiques are ruining a series many of us have become invested in.I understand if people are unhappy with the film, and everyone isentitled to their own opinions, but I think it is necessary to havesome perspective on this. Being a self-described "Kick-Ass-tard" I hadhigh expectations for the movie. I must say, after some initial castingreservations, I was very happy with the way the movie turned out.Aaron Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse gave performances veryindicative of their comic characters. The supporting cast of loonies -and the dorks as well - was remarkably similar to the comic. There wereromantic moments, suspenseful moments, and other moments where myfellow Kick-Ass fans were giggling like 12 year olds. Some have said the movie was cheesy or saccharine. To that I have tosay - OF COURSE! Any supporter of the novels would have been INFURIATEDif certain romantic lines straight from the novel had been cut. Peoplearound the world (myself included) would be hysterical if the moviehadn't had enough passionate scenes and sweet dialogue. Teenage ladsaround the globe fell in love with this series because of the comics'overwhelming love connection between the characters. The moviedelivered exactly what die-hard fans wanted - the near sappy andunparalleled romance between the conflicted characters.Others noted some of the inadequate special effects. To them, I have toask - What did you expect? This was a film made off of a $130 milliondollar budget. This is a 'Harry Potter' type movie. With what wasavailable, the director did a great job of highlighting all thesuper-nerd elements within the book. The jetpack scene in particularwas fantastic.All-in-all, the movie delivered exactly what its core fans were hopingfor. It was delightful to watch, and the chemistry between the starswas definitely there. It was as true to the comic as a movie was goingto be, and I was surprised at the Academy's decision to ignore it infavour of Crapatar..
*** out of (****)"Kick Ass" is the Matthew Vaughn directed action packed extravaganzathat's based off the comic book series and spun a lot of controversy. Amajority of the top critics thought it was truly repugnant to see aneleven year old spew out f bombs, kick ass, and take names. And yes, most strict Christians have complained about the film due to itsgraphic nature and vile profanity. Even without the strong controversy,I know this sounds heavily clichéd, but Kick Ass, kicks, well... ass.It sure kicked mine. How can you not love a film that has strongperformances, a great story, and just awe-inspiring cinematography? Toregard Kick Ass as another comic book film is like calling Alone in theDark a cinematic masterpiece. I can't believe how utterly satisfied Iwas with this movie. This is probably one of the most electrifying andgreat film experiences I've had. Is this film Citizen Kane? No, butit's such a great film on its own merits, that it doesn't even matter. Kick Ass revolves around Dave (Johnson), who wonders what it would belike to be a superhero. So Dave decides to buy a heroic costume, scaresoff a group of street punks in the beginning of the film, and entitleshimself "Kick Ass". Along the way, "Kick Ass" meets up with "Hit Girl"and "Big Daddy" who befriend him. However, the juvenile "Red Mist" istrying to take him down. First off, the cinematography is absolutely breathtaking. The movie isso vibrant and rich with color, that it's like looking at an ancientart painting. The movie has so much texture and detail that it's almostlike it jumps off the screen. Furthermore, the action is truly superband is nothing short of awesome. Seriously folks, this is the best andmost plausible action since "The Matrix". And yes, I went that far. Moreover, this movie has been talked about because of its graphicnature and doesn't disappoint in terms of gore. We get a humanmicrowave explosion, a decapitated leg, a shot to the face, and severalballs-to-the-wall action sequences. Additionally, the performances inthis movie are simply terrific. Every character truly stands out, eventhe most insignificant of characters. Furthermore, the script isextremely fresh. The jokes pack a punch, the premise is fun, thesubplots are great, and the movie's more drastic moments are simplytear-jerkers. Also, the pacing is fantastic. Scenes are paced prettybriskly and you will not be bored. While the pros outweigh the cons, there are still some flaws, but theyare extremely minimal, and minor. First off, I thought before Hit Girlwas introduced, the film wasn't that great. Don't get me wrong, if HitGirl wasn't in this movie, I'd give the movie a 5. It still was good, but things got a lot better when she kicked into gear. To add to that,I thought this movie could have been more fun. There were a little toomany depressing moments, that would have made an otherwise non-stop funescapist summer fare movie.Overall, Kick Ass is one of the most fun films of the year. It simplyis inclusive to the elements of a great movie: terrific acting, story, direction, gore, action, cinematography, and script. Its flaws are sominor and minimal, that they are so easy to overlook. Not to mention,it's just a whole lot of fun. Really, I don't think this movie couldhave been any better. It shows that Matthew Vaughn doesn't want to makea good movie. He wants to make a great movie and he succeeded. If onlydirectors would be this passionate and ambitious about their movies, then we'd get more films like "Kick Ass". "Kick Ass" is one of thoserare movies that's fun and well-crafted. Seek out a matinée.
the reason why I gave this movie a 9 is, because even though thetrailer of the movie made it look as if it was a mediocre but funnyparody on all the bad super hero movies of our time. It was actuallyseriously KICK ASS.The movie was refreshingly good and has a 10 for originality and had abetter plot than most super hero movies(batman was still better ofcourse). The plot was really cool because it mixed complete absurditywith realistic events and even tough the whole movie was unrealisticyou really get sucked as if your a little kid looking at your firstaction movie ever. but the action and violence in this movie is betterthen in any other SHM(super hero movie) I have ever see. I think itspity that the movie was marketed as a marvel parody the first scene inthe movie implies it by putting the text MARV big on the screen.Whichis stupid because its nothing like a parody and it doesn't do movie anyjustice .
Oh, well. Despite the fact that the vast majority of the reviews for"Kick Ass" on this site range from glowing to downright worshipful, Iguess I'll have to dissent. I didn't hate the film--in fact, I think it's well written, and verywell paced. Technically, it is excellent. It does have some holes andinconsistencies in the story. There were a couple of plot twists anddeus ex machinas that you could see coming from a mile away, and/orwere a bit much to take, but that's par for the course with films suchas this. A lot has been made of the character of "Hit Girl," played by ChloëGrace Moretz, and for good reason. She's the reason that "Kick Ass" isgroundbreaking, in its way--not necessarily a good, way, IMHO. We havea character, an eleven or twelve year old girl, who proficiently, sadistically and graphically kills people, with smiles and taunts, andgraphic profanity. It's safe to say that she's responsible for the vastmajority of of the film's prolific body count.Take a kiddie/teen tongue in cheek fantasy/adventure film. Add a heavydose of Scorsese-style profanity and Mob themes, along withTarantino-style graphic, splattering gore, spurting blood, anddismemberment, and you've got "Kick Ass." It's far more violent and gory than "The Dark Night," either "Hulk"movie, either of the two "Spiderman" movies that I've seen, or for thatmatter, any of the other superhero movies that I remember. In anothertime, and not long ago, no one under the age of sixteen would/shouldhave been allowed anywhere near it. But this movie hasdemonstrated--emphatically-- that just about anything regardingviolence and gore goes as far as getting young people into theatersthese days.I want to take nothing from Chloë Grace Moretz; she's likely asuperstar in the making. There are very few other actors her age thatcould have made such a character as hers work, but she pulls it offbrilliantly, and as believably as could have possibly been done (eventhough most or all of the martial arts/bullet dodging/gun fightingfeats that her character performs are absurd even for this genre offilm). She strikes me like Dakota Fanning or Jurnee Smollett, theamazing young actress in "Eve's Bayou." They're those very young actorswho--at least regarding the acting craft--each seem to carry very oldand world wise souls inside their child's bodies. But I can't help but be given pause regarding how far we've come (orregressed) as a society when a sadistic child assassin (who among otherthings in the movie, pursues and then murders a fleeing, unarmed woman)is one of the "heroes" of a top grossing film, to all of theseeffusively approving reviews. I suppose the saving grace is thatpractically all of the people that she kills are scumbags. As a person of the male gender, I have no problem with woman characterswho kick butt as well as or better than any man--quite the opposite. But this was not quite the same. If the film had been more serious about what made Mindy/Hit-Girl tick, and emphasized the context of her as someone profoundly screwed up, andthe product of a profoundly screwed up life experience (there are somethings in her past that it alludes to that much more could/should havebeen done with), then it would have been far more compelling anddefensible--I'm particularly thinking of "Let The Right One In".Instead, what is emphasized is the violence that she metes out--thethrills of her stylized, computer enhanced, artfully choreographedacrobatics and battle scenes and killing. That, in the view of themakers of the film, is apparently all that the demographic that theywere aiming at is interested in (and unfortunately, they're likelyright). In that regard, I think the biggest stretch of all was toward the end. That after having faced--and decimated--a roomful of mobsters shootingat her (on two separate occasions) along with everything else thatshe's been through, she enters school, on the verge of interacting andsocializing with people her own age for the first time in her life, andapparently just carries on like any normal girl (though she beats upthe two inevitable bullies who demand her lunch money). Huh?!?! I'm sure that even now someone, licking their chops at the prospect ofmatching or surpassing the box office receipts that "Kick Ass" hasbrought in, is probably thinking of how to top this, and is working ona pitch for the next rendition of this film genre. What's next? With CGI these days, anyone, even an infant or toddler, can be transformed, on screen, into a near indestructible martial artsmaster and firearms expert mass-killer uber-assassin. Will we witness, in the next movie, profanity shouting five and sixyear old killers? Or two year old toddlers mowing down and slicingapart crowds of people with machine guns from their strollers whileyelling the "c" word? In the context of a film designed to get laughs?I think "Kick-Ass" is worth seeing, if only because of its role as alandmark where the line of what is acceptable to us as a society hasbeen pushed, irrevocably, ever further. I just don't share the opinionof some of the people on this site who consider it a transcendentmasterpiece, yet it is definitely not boring. But I have very mixed, even foreboding feelings about the experience.
The idea of this movie is not bad. Unfortunately, on the big screen, itfails totally due to the dispersal of the plot. This movie wants to beeverything. Unfortunately, at the end, it's nothing but a "pastiche" ofother movies like Batman, Léon, Matrix, Kill Bill or Sin City withouttheir strength and personality. And because it is a copy or if youlike, a kind of collage of other movies, the brutality and violencejust seem to be misplaced, serving no purpose at all but the glorifyingof violence itself.A thing that bothered me was the (lack of) intention of the director, who seemed to need some direction himself. What was this all aboutactually? When the movie tried to be comical it was not funny. When ittried to be serious it was kind of comical-stupid. Violence a "déjà vu". Kick-Ass, the main character, seemed more like he was playing asecondary role??? But there is another thing that is bothering me even more. Why iseverybody praising this absolute average uninteresting movie, as if itwas the new Pulp Fiction? Get me out of hereÂ
I began watching this film with the frame in my mind that it was simplygoing to be another spoof-style comedy film, similar to that ofSuperheroe movie which was rather bad. By the end of the movie, I wasin fact rather shocked at how much I did enjoy it. A first in a while Imust admit! The character casting was perfect. Aaron Johnson's debutwas fantastic, I didn't even realise it was him at first! If I hadknown beforehand I more than likely would have been slightly dubious, but it worked well. Christopher Mintz-Plasse's role also did work well, however I thought he would have been involved much earlier in the storythan what happened. I previously watched Chloe Moretz in '(500) Days ofSummer' and with her having such a small role I didn't know whether ornot she would be able to pull off such a character she is portraying.Again, proved wrong! She fitted like a glove and I really couldn't seeanyone else playing such a stronger role. When I realised Nicholas Cagewas involved, like Johnson, I was slightly unsure about whether the'serious' tone of his previous acting (due to many of the cast beingmore young-newer faces) would kind of wash out the film but it didn't.The certificate however I thought was a bit risky for UK cinemas andthink it would have deserved more of an 18 rating, compared to 15. Theviolence in it was rather graphic, which I did find a bit off puttingat times, but then again, I wasn't really expecting the moregang-violent crime that was involved within the story.Overall, it was a fresh new film which I think was seriously needed inthe films of today as FAR too many re-makes keep being regurgitatedonto the cinema screens! If you like violence, a bit of humour andsomething new...then Kick-Ass will blow your mind!
Kick-Ass is my all time favorite movie. Why? Because it has EVERYTHINGI always love: surreal images, dark comedy, over the top jokes, bloodyfight scenes, good character development and of course superheroes. Ican't see why some people said that the main character doesn't donothing. Dave Lizewski single-handedly saved a man's life and justabout every word that pours from his mouth (and narration) is worthquoting. He's the only person fighting criminals without a personalvendetta and a character that you genuinely feel bad for when he getspublicly tortured, and it feels good when he redeems himself at theend. Aside of the original graphic novel, one of my favorite comicbooks is Leo Ortolani's "Rat-Man" and Kick-Ass looks like a live-actionversion with humans of it, because it shows what the superheroes reallymean and their true messages. I like how it's tone ranges from lightand droll to dark and brooding. This movie is an insane mix: it's anaction movie, a gangster movie, a comedy movie, a high school-buddymovie, a dramatic movie and of course a superhero movie, it haseverything! The only downfall of the film in my opinion is the romanticfactor between Dave and Katie, it was seriously unacceptable andrushed, even in a movie like this one. But aside of that, I truly adoreKick-Ass. I love how wicked it is, I love how dark it is, I love howfrigging' weird it is and most of all I love how spontaneously andwithout fear takes risks in several points of the plot. I could watchthis movie over and over and never get tired of it. It's odd, it'screative, it's my all time favorite movie.
Its been so long since i've been to the theater and was just blownaway. Yes, I will use the pun, Kick Ass does indeed Kick Ass. The movieis the near flawless mix of Action, Comedy, and yes Drama. It redefinesthe Superhero Comedy Subgenre. I will see this movie again this weekendand I anticipate that it will grow legs due to all the positive word ofmouth endorsements. But this movie is not for everyone, if you have aproblem with kids ***cough 12 yr-old girls cough*** committing acts ofviolence then do not see this film. This film is NOT for kids.I recommend this film for ages 12+ and for those who liked Kill Billand Spiderman. See this film you will love it.
Disgusting. "Kick Ass" is enough to give you impressional indigestion for a long time. It is difficult to see who this movie is oriented to. It is too puerile, too comic book, for any thinking adult and much too violent for teens or kids. The assumption is a few dork teen kids become "superheroes" by putting on masks and tights, (without any superpowers). And fight thug bad guys.Kids and friends get graphically beat up, gouged knifed, shot. There is a sweet little girl maybe 11, played by Chloe Moretz, who gets into a fist fight with villain Mark Strong who is more than a foot taller and outweighs her by 100 lbs. Gratuitous wincing violence. There are a lot of movies like Batman and Superman where there is comic book violence. This is not one of those. Don't pollute your mind with this pointless ultraviolent trash. If you have kids, or young kids, I recommend you resist allowing your children to. It is a sad day for this country, for the world, when this junk is considered "entertainment". Repulsive.
The advertising campaign promoting this film has misled you. First off, it's even funnier than you're expecting. Secondly, it's really and truly not. I have never in my life witnessed a film that so successfully blended laugh-out-loud comedy with heavy, intensely graphic action and dire drama, and Kick Ass will often switch amongst all three in a single scene. It's wise to bring tissues to the theater for when the coke splurts out of your nose from intense laughter, but you may need it for wiping away a tear, as well. And it will definitely come in hand when the guy behind you jumps up and screams "F--- YEAH!" while accidentally knocking his cup onto your lap. Kick Ass is likely to provide all three experiences, and it is truly and unexpectedly a cinematic triumph as a result. At the heart of this mixing of genres is Nicholas Cage's character, "Big Daddy," who effortlessly alternates amongst surreal and unbalanced father of the year, dead-on Adam West impersonator, and poignant tragic hero without blinking an eye. I've never liked Nicholas Cage prior to seeing this film (even I'm not sure why), but I just became his biggest fan after watching this. The rest of the cast does stellar work as well, but this film couldn't have soared the way it does without Cage's presence. Beyond that, the camera work, editing, and soundtrack all do an incredible job of keeping you glued to the screen throughout. If you're coming to this film looking for yet another easily assembled (and easily forgotten) spoof film of the season, you're likely to find yourself barking up the wrong tree. I'm going to smack myself for saying something this cliche, but, for lack of better terminology, Kick Ass kicks ass. One obligatory warning in this otherwise glowing review: Kick Ass is not for everyone. If you have a problem with graphic violence, particularly when it involves children, stay far away from this film. Hit Girl, who appears to be 10 or 11 years old, is far from your standard side-kick who watches safely from the sidelines. In fact, most of the graphic violence and death depicted in this film are thanks to her character. Yes, there is a message in this film that the way she has been raised was neither healthy nor appropriate, but it's likely to get lost in the cheers and laughs that are elicited by her many exploits. In general, the major issue that seems to separate these characters from their fictional heroes, even more than their naivety, is the fact that they see no problem with killing criminals. Don't expect a heavy-handed Batman moral about not stooping to bad guys' level, either. These guys pick up just as many guns and fire as indiscriminately.
