The film "Killer Elite" Staring Jason Statham, Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro and Directed by Gary McKendry, was an absolute riveting thrillerthat will leave you at the edge of your seat all the way to the veryend.Jason Statham and Clive Owen were amazing as adversaries. Robert DeNiro and Statham also made a really good Duo team. The storyline heldits own, since there is truth to the events which makes it intriguingto watch! Brought together by an all star cast of actors and an Oscarnominated Director. The Fight Choreography is really well done, not over the top just rawand in your face, nothing worse when you got actors who are stuntoriented doing thing you know it would be impossible to do to take youout of the time and place of the film. For more Review check out http://newscliptv.com/arts/8561.html
Not a very good movie. It was only my uncritical love of the Strath manthat made me sit through it. This is based on a book by a writer whomany believe concocted a bogus tale about the British S A S. Wow what apiece of Sh** movie. Save your self the time and skip this joke. Thestory is pointless. Also In 1981 3rd generation Glocks have not beencreated yet (there were available 20 year later), hell the 1stgeneration Glock only came out in 1982 and that was only sold to theAustrian army. Base on a true story my butt, the director could evenget the right props. And can someone explain the ending to me???????why would they 1. give him the money? and 2. leave him alive? Thank theLord I didn't spend money on this movie, I would have been pisssssedoff! They could have easily taken an hour off the movie and may have beenbetter but I'm not so sure it would have helped. I've always boastedthat I could sit through any movie with the Strathmaster but today Ialmost failed...
Killer Elite unfurls at a decent pace with a story that is quiteengrossing and which holds your attention. This movie does remind you a bit of the 'Bourne' series movies. Quiterealistic. The action is really good especially when it involves JasonStatham (Danny- retired member of Britain's Elite Special Air Service)and Clive Owen (Spike- who belongs to a secret military society). Theperformances are the strong point of the movie. Jason Statham isestablishing himself as an actor with a good presence, although hisability to carry out action scenes was never in doubt. Clive Owen playsout a strong character menacingly. Robert De Niro is outstanding too inhis apt role as the mentor of Danny. Overall, quite enjoyable as a decent action movie.
In a dark hospital storage room Jason Statham thrashes elbow strikesand knees with Clive Owen in a vicious close-in all out brawl. You knowthis will not end well for Owen. Director Gary McKendry flawlesslyorchestrates the brutal dynamics of the high impact action sequences.Unfortunately, he doesn't sustain that metric of edgy intensitythroughout "Killer Elite". Then again, I saw "Killer Elite" to seeJason Statham kick some ass. I had seen the movie trailer where Stathamtied to a chair elevates and pummels his unsuspecting adversary. Ithink Jason Statham is the most explosive martial arts star today. Heis lean and muscular, moves like a dancer. He unleashes violence withlighting quickness and deadly force. As an actor he is likeablymeasured and very charismatic. Unfortunately, "Killer Elite" is not hisbreakthrough star vehicle. The movie provides formidable screenpartners in Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro; however, this does not alterthe end result."Killer Elite" is not a remake of the 1975 James Caan movie. MattSherring's screenplay is based on Sir Ranulph Fiennes's novel "TheFeather Men". The translated story, although based on events of theBritish SAS operations in Oman, is just not that interesting. This isthe sad failing of "Killer Elite". I was surprised in the prologue thatthe story was set in 1980, with the world possibly imploding intochaos. I had expected something more contemporary or updated. Stathamis Danny, elite special ops agent; in Mexico with his mentor Hunter, the grizzled and world wary Robert DeNiro, to kill a bad guy. Themission unravels when Danny lapses: not killing the boy in the car, whois witness to the assassination. That attack of conscience nearly costsDanny his life. Game over. Danny retires, finding a modicum of peace inAustralia and possibly love with beautiful Anne (gorgeous and strongwilled Yvonne Strahovski).Of course Danny is pulled off the farm in the Outback and back into theGame. Hunter is held hostage by Oman Tribal Leader Sheikh Amr(believable feeble and ruthless Rodney Afif) after a blown operation. The Sheikh will give Danny $6 million and free Hunter, if he kills themen responsible for the deaths of his three sons. The catch: They mustconfess to the murders on video and their demise must occuraccidentalÂrecall this is set in 1980. Failing to rescue Hunter solo,Danny seals his own fate. Danny soon realizes the reach may include hisbeloved Anne.In the meantime, Danny's vengeance pact lands on the radar of TheFeather Men, a clandestine organization of former SAS players, whom arepower brokers with oil interests in Oman. Their lead operative is Spike(powerful and intense Clive Owen), who is also former SAS. Whileinvestigating the deaths of their men associated with Danny, thingsjust don't calculate right. Owen effectively instills a code of honorand noble presence in Spike, so when he ignores the orders of hishandlers and goes rogue it furthers the story and enrolls us.Predictably, this serves solely as the conflict of wit and wills ofDanny and Spike. Their climatic showdown is the only captivatingelement of "Killer Elite", which also illustrates the downside of theoverly complicated, often incoherent narrative. What kept meentertained were the impeccable fight scenes with Statham. Iparticularly loved the sequence on the stairwell, where Statham thrustsa kick to the chest, strikes the head, and judo throws the bad guy tothe floor. That is just clean, elegant, and powerful. Too bad thismetaphor fails to represent "Killer Elite" as a whole. DirectorMcKendry possesses all the right elements and players. Somethingdilutes in the integration. There is never a visceral sense of dangeror wonder in "Killer Elite". And that is a real shame.
STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning** Sunday Night * Monday Morning Set in 1980, Killer Elite is based on a true story, revolving aroundSAS agent Danny (Jason Statham) who owes everything to his friend andmentor Hunter (Robert De Niro.) So when he is taken hostage in Oman,Danny is forced to co-operate with the kidnappers demands: that thethree soldiers responsible for the death of his son are hunted downaround the globe and killed. But even when he goes through with themission, he finds, as well as having to contend with the relentlessAgent Spike (Clive Owen) that not everything is as it seems.Holding true to it's claim of being a story spinning all round theglobe, Killer Elite literally dashes with hyperactive energy from thedeserts of the Middle East to the Australian outback, to Europeancities like Paris and London, all the while holding it's accolade ofbeing a true story. But then fact is often stranger than fiction, andthe exploits of Britain's elite special forces could no doubt throw upeven stranger tales. This is a slick, stylish enough film, that carries off it's variousaction sequences and tense moments with the requisite style and aplomb, even if it doesn't generate the amount of suspense it could have andthe whole thing does feel a tad disjointed and sporadic. Performances wise, Statham is simply the reliable sturdy action hero, while De Niro in support commandeers another generic performance andOwen as the adversary can resort back to his old wooden ways. Not a lotto write home about on that front, then, but thankfully it's not a filmdriven by this aspect and so the more superficial stuff that carries itthrough. It's a messy, chaotic, sketchy and unbelievable (even for somethingbased on a true story) film, but entertaining and enthralling enough tobe well worth a watch. ***
Killer Elite is a Hollywood made version of supposedly true events. Itpretty much retells the story of a mercenary Danny (Jason Statham)whose best friend and mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro) is kidnapped by arich Arabic man, who in return, wants to avenge the death of his threesons to the hands of British S.A.S. agents. At the same time, an S.A.S.agent by the name of Spike (Clive Owen) tries to prevent the deathsfrom happening. This is pretty much a typical Jason Statham flick. If you like one ofthem, then chances are you pretty much like all of them. At times, theaction feels just like ''The Mechanic'' (who came out earlier thisyear). As for the performances, Owen and De Niro give out some strongperformances. While their performances aren't exactly what I'd considerOscar worthy (I'm talking about two actors who were nominated for/wonAcademy Awards before), the performances still remind us that they are, even today, some really great actors. Statham is as good as ever, butthis comes from a Jason Statham fan. However, the film could have been so much more, and I know what I'mtalking about. The opening scene, followed by De Niro's ''escape'' fromthe Arabic men, are very epic scenes. I actually wanted the film tocontinue in the same direction as it's beginning. However, the filmturns typical Hollywood/Statham movie, and the action (although thefilm says it's inspired by true events) quickly becomes over the top.Furthermore, a part of the film seems to slow down the plot for nearly20-30 minutes...The dialogue at times also feels awfully cheesy. So overall I'll give it a seven out of ten. Not because it's a badmovie per Se. I'm sure typical Jason Statham who pay to see this intheatres will get what they're looking for. But simply because it couldhave been excellent movie, and that it unfortunately decided to go downanother path. Still, for the most part I was entertained, with thefirst 15-20 minutes and the Clive Owen/Jason Statham fight being someof my favourite action scenes I've seen this year.
The theme of this movie is "intrigue." There are layers of protagonistswith mysterious agendas. Not all the t's are crossed, but the mainstory holds firm.Which is the story of a reluctant band of experienced mercenariesplotting to kill, one by one, several British citizens as payback forsomething they did in a British skirmish somewhere in the Middle East. Each kill has to be cleverly disguised as an "accident," and evidenceof each successful plot has to be provided to the "client." To top itoff, another layer of protagonists senses what is going on, and plotsto stop said plotting. Intriguing, indeed!I still wonder what DeNiro is doing in this movie, but he contributes agreat character to it. Statham is in-your-face as usual, with brains.Clive Owen mysteriously disappointed me, as I generally enjoy his work.He struck me as weak in this role; like a thorn in my side, that keptbothering me and still does. The supporting cast is excellent, and theplot carries the day. Very enjoyable "thinking man's" action movie.
Now that I have seen more than one Jason Statham movie, I already knowwhat to expect. A Jason Statham action movie is old-fashioned slam-bangaction where Mr. Statham kicks some serious ass in an almost superhumanway, and convinces all of us that he can really do these things."Killer Elite" is no different. In this action flick, the story revolves around Jason being pulled outof secret agent retirement because his mentor Robert de Niro gotkidnapped by a Osama Bin Laden look-alike who wants to avenge themurder of his sons by some British guys. Clive Owen is also an agentfrom another organization who is checking out the actions and dealingsof former agents like Statham was. Of course there would be someconvoluted double-crossing in this battle of wits and brawn betweensecret agents.Of course there is the typical explosive car chases and foot chases.Jason was awesome in that scene where he was tied down to a chair andhe was able to fight his way out as only he can. To neutralize all thetestosterone going on, there was the lovely Yvonne Strahovsky in yetanother typical action flick cliché as the hero's girlfriend in peril. As the senior agent, De Niro's scenes are fewer than those of Stathamor Owens. This is everything you would expect in a Jason Statham action movie, plus the star power of Clive Owen and Robert de Niro in there to boot. Not bad at all for its adrenaline rush.
wow im confused this film was unbelievable im confused who was the goodguy and who was the bad guy it was advertised as stathams characterbeing ex SAS and yet he goes and kills them his former colleagues ...and wouldn't it have not been easier to kill the sheiks and his sonrather than killing the men who were targeted .......but maybe what ithink is worse is it is basically about a British hit-man going aroundkilling ex British soldiers i know its supposed to be based on a truestory but still distatefull we hear enough of that on the news seemslike the filmmakers enjoyed making the British to be the bad guys whohad to be punished..... personally its worth watching once but if youmiss it you wont miss much.. it wont be joining my DVD collection anytime soon and the bit with the girlfriend seemed annoying andunnecessary does everything have to be a love story and maybe im beingpetty but the scenes set in London was clearly not London....and deniro hes a amazing actor hes better than a bit part like this id ratherwatch ronin
Killer ElitePlanning an assassin's surprise retirement party is not that differentthan planning any surprise party, except that instead of yellingsurprise when they arrive, guests' just open fire.Fortunately, the killer in this action movie is only semi-retired.Bryce (Jason Statham), a highly trained mercenary, is called out ofretirement when his old teammate (Robert DeNiro) botches a mission foran Oman king.Tasked with tracking down and taping the confessions of the Britishagents that killed the king's sons during an incursion, Bryce calls onhis old teammates (Dominic Purcell, Aden Young) for backup.Meanwhile, an operative (Clive Owen) employed to safeguard those formeragents gets wind of Bryce's activities and hones in on him. With below average action scenes, questionable acting and a pitiableplot line, Killer Elite is a shade above generic.Besides, everyone already knows that assassins have the same retirementsuccess rate as Hip-Hop icons and star athletes. Thoroughly entertaining and full of action much like Statham's"Transporter" flicks except the plot is quite a bit more sophisticatedinvolving kidnapping and revenge killings by an Arab sheik, unexpecteddouble crosses and amazing chases, fights and escape sequences with agritty European/British flair and ambiance similar to "Taken". The one thing I didn't like is a lot of the fight scenes are shotfrenetically hand held and close up with very few pulled back mastershots so you can see the choreography and tricky Krav Maga style selfdefense maneuvers similar to what was depicted in Statham's first"Transporter" movie which was the best out of the series IMO in thisregard. I mean I kept asking during the "Killer Elite" fight sequences..."Whatdid he just do to that guy? I couldn't see it! Dang it!" instead of"Did you see what he did?! That's amazing!" Oh well, at least I enjoyed this one more than "MoneyBall".
The screenplay of this movie is really bad. I know this is "based" on atrue story, but having a real story to tell seemed to turn into anexcuse to freely describe the events in a non-realistic andnon-interesting way. So this story could be very true, but for the wayit's told, it really doesn't make any sense. One new scene every 2 or 3minutes; 1 minute conversations in which the characters meet, describethe situation and decide what to do; unknown characters popping up inthe middle of the story without explanations. There's huge lack ofelaboration on everything but on the action scenes, cause the directorseemed to take those shots seriously and dedicate the time is needed tomake them outstanding. Really, when the action is there, this movierocks. This is a true story in which action is crucial, but occupiesprobably only between 25% and 30% of the playing time. The other 70% isextremely flawed. By watching it, you can tell the director disregardedeverything but the action here, and the truth is that when there's noaction, this movie doesn't make any sense, and that's something youdon't fix neither by having true events, nor having DeNiro in thecredits. You have to take time to describe the events to the audience. The excellent action parts are not enough to save this one.
Whether you buy that or not, this film will have you figuring whethersuch clandestine operations and outfit can exist in the first place, and view reported deaths with a more critical eye, especially if theyinvolve those of high profile, or special/secret forces. Here, mercenaries are available for hire to the highest bidder, doing theirbit to rid the world in the 80s of its unwanted criminals, dictatorsand factions within countries. This is a world where nothing is alwayswhat it seems, with shadowy objectives and intents by parties all roundfrom individuals, the groups they operate within, and even from thehighest levels of government. The opening had Statham's Danny and DeNiro's Hunter chilling in what would be a bar, only to serve as the bigbang introduction to the first set action piece, where Danny decides tocall his life of killing quits after seeing how the innocent gettangled into their job, and getting injured during this hesitation.Fast forward to a year into his retirement, he gets forced back intothe game given a Sheik in Oman had imprisoned Hunter, and for thelatter's freedom, Danny has to fish out ex members of Britain's eliteSpecial Air Service involved with killing the Sheik's three sons, andtherefore paving the way for his fourth to assume his place as therightful heir without being gunned down. The challenge laid down is toelicit confessions of their involvement, and making their deaths looklike accidents and cannot be linked back to either him nor his son.Sounds like a tall order, but with money at stake and a higher, moreimportant priority to rescue his mentor, Danny assembles his usualcrew, and spends the first hour like any heist movie, planning for andexecuting those plans in great detail.Which of course led to action sequence after action sequence, but notin the traditional way of a simple shoot them up. Meticulous planninggoes into each hit, as well as Clive Owen's Spike, an ex-SAS manhimself out to protect his own, and working under the auspices of aclandestine group known as The Feather Men, breathing down hard intrying to unearth who's behind the killings of the people he knew, aswell as the true mastermind who ordered the hits. There are two partsto the story, and each were intriguing in its own way, with the firstfocused on the mission Danny and team had on hand, and the later halfon the repercussions when the long arm of Spike and his team managed toclose in and run fences around Danny and his team.Statham versus Owen in at least two fisticuffs were the highlights ofthe film, and despite a little flaw in shooting the action up close, they were the most intense battles of the lot in the film, which hadcar chases to close quartered combat. The screenplay by Matt Sherringmoves the story at breakneck speed, and rookie feature film directorGary McKendry helms the film like an experienced old hand in keepingthe techniques here very old school, since it's set at the crack of the80s decade. For the action junkie, you may not get the big actionspectacles you were probably looking for, but more measured onesbecause of the conditions set forth by the Sheik. However, if you're upfor some thinking man's espionage with shifting and undefinedloyalties, spy versus spy type thrillers, like James Bond but minus thecorny lines, women and gadgets, then this one is right for you since itpretty much can be rooted in reality, and as a consequence now you maylook upon reported deaths with that skeptical eye. What worked is of course the presence of the three main leads, whetheralone like in the case of Statham, who plays the ringleader amongst hisgroup of merry men who go out to do his dirty surveillance andinfiltration work, and that of Owen in a similar role but in theopposite camp, or paired opposite each other for that exchange ofwisecracks and sizing up of ability. Statham carries the entire filmalmost on his own given the significant screen time he has as the leaddespite shared billing with his co-stars, and it took a while beforeOwen enters the picture to stamp his own flair into the film. Robert DeNiro however had the shortest screen time amongst the trio, but hischarisma more than makes up for it, chewing up the screen each time heappears. Yvonne Strahovski plays the lone female token in the film asDanny's main squeeze, though her story arc is quite negligible only tooffer Danny a reason to quit his risky life of kill or be killed, andfor some token romantic scenes to toss up the series of testosteronefilled dialogue or action.Easily one of the best thrillers set in the Middle East in recentyears, with its 80s setting involving oil, power and mercenary brokers, there's this uncanny repetition of history, should this be real asclaimed, in what's happening in the Middle East now. Real life is oftenstranger than fiction, and it surely showed how the bigger fish in thepond can take advantage in the setting of its agenda, at the expense ofthose at the lower rungs who just have to follow orders. Highlyrecommended!
Decent acting from the supporting cast, an interesting story that isthankfully absent any clichés, and a lack of any "gotcha" in the storycertainly help this movie stand out. But really it's the pacing thatmade it for me. Things happen FAST. They happen logically, andreasonably (well, reasonably given the nature of the story) but theyhappen quickly. The movie does not have any periods of introspectionfor our main characters. It suggests that they are having thosemoments, but doesn't linger on them or play them up at all; they arejust facts, like everything else that happens in the movie (fights, deaths, kidnappings, etc.).The story is complicated, involving at least 5 separately motivatedfactions, but at no time was it confusing (so there was no need for an"aha!" moment). The fight scenes were all exceedingly well choreographed and fit thestory so well that there was never a time when 2 people were facing offjust so we could see them fight; I really appreciated that. All in all, a very satisfying film: lots of action, lots of very goodacting, and lots of attention to detail (it really looked like it wasthe early 1980s).I was going to give this a 7/10, but as I was writing and thinkingabout it, I upped it to 8/10.
This is a movie that is said to be based on a true story but afterseeing the trailer. I could tell it isn't by much at all. No, I didn'tdo much research or anything like that but it just seemed obvious. Withthat being said there is a lot going on in this movie than I expectedand I liked the pacing of it. Even if it, it is sort of off at timesand not that fluid. It covers a lot in just two hours and doesn't comedown to a straightforward action movie although there is a lot ofaction in it. Robert De Niro makes a appearance in this movie but notby much. He just didn't take as much screen time as I thought he would, which is a shame because I liked watching his character in this movie. As for Jason Statham, he does what he does best in this. I never reallythought of him as a great actor but he fits right into these types ofroles so it's alright. Anyways instead of those two actors workingtogether for the most part. It's basically Danny(Jason Statham) vs.Spike(Clive Owen) with attempts at assassinations in between, whichisn't necessarily a bad thing. But just thought it would have been niceto see more of Robert De Niro in a type of role which I liked seeing inthe past. But it has two actors that played some badass character, sowatching the two duke it out was entertaining. And watching theprogress and how everything unfolds is done alright, not great butalright. Also what makes all the characters interesting here is how noteverything is black and white and how the actions of every character isquestionable. Since in this everyone has there own thoughts and form ofjustice. But some I found myself not just taking one side over theother all the way through. Overall this isn't a generic action popcornflick, but it's a action movie with a lot of action in it but also hasa bit of substance as well although not anything amazing. It isn't agreat movie but it's sort of a entertaining movie first time through. If the movie was more fluid with a better development and editing itwould have been better though.7.3/10
This is NOT a remake of the 1975 film! This is a remarkable translationof a book that exposes the British government, or at least a scheming, ruthless portion of it, for the money grubbing, greedy opportuniststhey were. Set in Oman in the 1980's, the film focuses on an elite teamof assassins sent in under the guise of maintaining political stabilityto take out elements of the government who were unfriendly to Britishinterests. There missions are simple assassinations, usually cleankills, until the one we see at the opening of the film.I could digress into the book itself, but had better stick to the movieif I don't want to start an editorial. I do highly recommend the book,if you have the time.As to the film, it is a no-holds barred look at the seedy underside ofpolitical deals and the life of a trained mercenary. Jason Stathamgives a rare and remarkable performance as the assassin who is tired ofthe game, yet pulled back in to save the life of his former teamleader, Robert De Niro. De Niro's performance is highly reminiscent ofhis role in Ronin, and he brings that sense of a man who knows so muchmore than he is willing to tell. Clive Owen is a passionate, coldblooded killer who has trouble coming to grips with his physicalimpairment (he lost an eye) which led to his discharge from the SAS.Dominic Purcell gives a stellar performance as the assassin whoresembles Fiona in Burn Notice in attitude ("Shall we shoot them?"),but is intensely loyal and follows orders as directed. The film movesquickly, and the action is appropriate to the scene, which means thatthere are no added explosions or visuals beyond what is needed to getthe point across.Rated R for language, violence, and some sexuality/nudity, this is acarefully thought out film without a bias. The events unfold, the storyis told, and it is up to you, the viewer, to determine right and wrong.I will leave collectible up to you, it will depend on your taste inpolitics and war films.
In 1980 Ranulph Fiennes wrote a black novel upon which director GaryMcKendry based this extremely great movie upon. The fact that actionstar Jason Statham, who plays Danny does not give it away, but doesindicate that there will be a great deal of explosive action andexcitement in it. Robert De Niro plays Hunter and holds his own againstthe heavies who is led by Clive Owen who plays Spike. The story isbased on a true story and deals with a dying oil Sheik who hires agroup of Mercenaries to hunt down and kill the men responsible for thedeath of his son. Once into the story, the audience realizes that thereis not one, but two sets of ex-soldiers involved. Hired by some covertex-SAS officers, one group is suppose to eliminate the other. Troubleis, one does not know which is which even when well into the movie. What is clear is that all the killers involve are the very best theBritish military has trained. Inbetween, there is a great deal ofmayhem, destruction and general physical confrontations on all sides,so much so it's difficult to know which are the good guys and which arethe bad guys. Nevertheless, this is an exciting film and the entirecast does its level best to make it so. Thus one can say, Well Done andrecommend it as well worth seeing. ****
And again Jason Statham comes with another action movie. This one isfull of his amazing moves that proves his fitness and also not using astunt. The story of this movie is strong as it is based on a real one.I love this.... And also it is not an ordinary one where you can simplypredict the end. It is full of unexpected events and surprises whichwill make you not bored by expecting them previously. Of course, thisis not the best of Jason Statham's but it is a really good one. Iwatched this one without seeing its reviews as I know that there is nobad movies for this guy. And till the moment I can't know how it got6.5 rating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean this movie is really good, so whypeople don't like it? My only explanation is that they don't likeACTION.... If so, then don't rate action movies because they have theirfans. Everything was very good in this movie. I advise you to watch itat once.
This movie was far more textured and interesting than I was expecting. It's certainly not a typical action flick. Basically, it's amulti-layered film about competent, high level operatives where theline between right and wrong is extremely blurred. In fact, therereally is no "good guy" or "bad guy" in the narrative. It's a storyabout mercenaries and ex-spooks that have engaged and are currentlyengaged in harsh and uncompromising actions. Life and death and regrettold from the point of view of Jason Statham's character. It's anengaging and intense thrill ride that apologizes for nothing. I reallyliked that about this movie. There's not a lot of depth but gorgeousYvonne Stahovski and Robert DeNiro are much needed supportingcharacters that define Statham's character motivation and that reallyis enough for this type of tale.
This is a very good film, which is based on a book which claims to bebased on real events. This is old-school film making with a crackingplot and decent actors without reliance on special effects and computertechnology. The plot has many unexpected twists which keeps youengrossed and on the edge of your seat. Just when you think it's over,it starts up again. If you like realistic action films with fist fights and guns andcharacters who are tough, this is the film for you. On a moral/ethicalnote, this film raises the question: who are the good guys and who arethe bad guys?
