| Storyline | Knight and Day has action by the boatload, cheeky wit, unexpected double-crossing, sexual tension, and the blinding smile of its star, Tom Cruise. In short, what more could you ask of a rollicking good-time movie? Knight and Day, which also stars the irresistible Cameron Diaz as Cruises superspys ultimate foil, channels the best elements of earlier films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mission Impossible, the Bourne films, and even a little of Duplicitys sophistication. Mostly, though, Knight and Day is about moving things along merrily, if not completely coherently, as the two stars tangle, and tussle with trust issues, in a completely believable, compulsively watchable way. Cruise plays Roy, an on-the-lam spy (who may have had some kind of psychotic break--or who may in fact be the only person telling the truth) he runs into the winsome June (Diaz), who gets caught up in Roys mad dash to escape the cabal of federal agents on his tail. No one follows us, Roy announces to a terrified diner crowd as he moves to make his escape with June, or I kill myself--and then her. While Knight and Day, directed by James Mangold, has more than its share of high-speed chases, hails of bullets, and explosions, it works far better as a romantic comedy--for the chemistry between Diaz and Cruise is delicious, palpable, and believable. So grab a date and an extra-large popcorn, and get ready for a sweet and fun Knight and Day. |
"Knight and Day" has everything a Tom Cruise film should have: big-time box office stars, a bunch of comedy, tons of action, and a great story. In this outing Cruise plays a spy who is on the run from the CIA who meets a funny and beautiful car restorer, played to perfection by Cameron Diaz (Tom's co-star in 2001's "Vanilla Sky"). The two join forces as they fight off evil forces, travel the world to exciting and exotic locales, and ultimately fall in love. As great as Cruise is in this movie it's Diaz's portrayal that steels the picture. She plays her part with convincing comedy and her chemistry with Cruise is the right fix for the picture. "Knight and Day" became a box office hit grossing over $260,000,000 on a huge budget of $117,000,000, one of the biggest budgets for a Tom Cruise film. However, the critics hated it with one saying the movie is a "high-energy, low-impact comedy-caper that labors to bring a measure of wit, romance, and glamour to an overworked spy-thriller template".
It was a nice surprise for me. I think Diaz is a revelation, full ofsexy charm, while Cruise is quite OK. Both are very likable here andthat is the entire point. The music is excellent, it is a simplesoundtrack but there was not a bit I would not enjoy listening to andit effectively spunks up the action/tension. Cruise's character is abit like a 007 on acid trip or cocaine, or something. The locations arebeautiful, the plot moves along quickly and while a few action piecesare inevitably over the top and unrealistic it does not take away thefun, overall they were very well made. I have had splendid timewatching this and maybe will watch it again with pleasure. Generally Iam not a huge fan of neither Diaz nor Cruise, yet here I liked them alot. And last but not least there is a nice few minutes on a train andI love when films happen on trains.
Roy Miller (Cruise) is a former FBI agent who is protecting theinventor of a battery that will help solve the world's energy problems. The FBI believes he has gone rogue. June (Diaz) is caught in the middleand is not sure who or what to believe. I have never enjoyed a movie more than this one. I like it when a maincharacter, in this case, Roy, is always 3-steps ahead of those chasinghim. We see great action stunts and I mean really terrific stunts, fantastic CGI, good lines and some comedy as well. What more could anaudience want? This is pure entertainment. Realism: take a back seatfor a while, this is too much fun. As for Cameron Diaz, she really got her groove on in this movie. No,she is nothing like a Laura Croft type, but she really got into thisstory. I think because of some of the stunts she was also involved inshe had to pay closer attention to detail, and you could see someconcern on her face at times. Real concern. In other movies, I justthought of her as eye candy and an average actress, but she has shownthat she can focus when she needs to. She displayed a gamut of emotionsin here. Very good. Oh, she is still eye candy, but now I can considerher more than that. Okay, this is not Shakespeare, but does it have tobe? There was one thing I didn't understand. When June goes to board theplane she is told she cannot as the flight is overbooked. A few minuteslater an attendant says they found a seat for her. When she boards theplane she sees there are only a handful of people on board. She doesn'tfind that out of the ordinary and says something lame. There is noexplanation. Why was she told the flight was overbooked when apparentlyit was not? See?The title Knight and Day makes you think the main characters' names areKnight and Day. Originally, I thought so. Wrong. The Knight part iseasy, (and it's not the knight figurine  thrown in to throw you off --Roy bought at the airport; I think he bought it, but I didn't see himpay for it. Pretty sure he bought it), but not the Day part unless yougo along with some of the last lines in the movie. I don't, but thereare no other clues. Not a deal breaker. Just something to ponder on.However, you have to go pretty far into the movie to discover what thesignificance of Knight is. Pretty sure he paid for it. Almost sure. FBI agent Fitzgerald (Sarsgaard) looks a lot like Kiefer Sutherland, don't you think? Maybe a little Gig Young too. He did a good job as dideveryone else, and I think Cruise and Diaz worked well together. Thephotographer could have lingered a little longer on some of the scenerywe were shown, but very good. As for Tom Cruise, hey, he's your next Clark Kent aka Superman. And,his wife Katie can be Lois. Think about it. But, he as Superman cannotshoot anyone. Will that be a problem? All in all a very enjoyable movie, sheer fantasy, pure entertainment.Hey, do you think Roy and June will meet Mr. and Mrs. Smith?Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: One F-bomb by Ms Diaz.Ouch!
Cruise and Diaz need to team up for another film, because they've got great chemistry. The movie has edge-of-your-seat action. The romance has so much passion even though all the characters do is kiss. Fresh story. Never a dull moment. (ADDED BY MY SISTER: Tom Cruise is so hot in this movie!!!
I had heard some good things about the action sequence, but it wasstupid.....Cameron Diaz manages to be in the Swiss Alps, to a tropicalparadise, to her sister's wedding in a couple of days? Come On....Andall of a sudden Tom Cruise shows from nowhere on her windshield.....sodumb....Supposedly, this movie was Tom Cruise's benchmark to see if hecan carry Misson Impossible 4.....good luck with that....maybe he mightbe better jumping up and down Oprah's couch on OWN....anyway, I'm toldI don't have enough lines to get this review approved, so I have towrite more lines to get this approved. How come Tom Cruise shows up allof a sudden in almost every action sequence? Him and his stupid smilein every scene? Where did that come from? Even though he all of asudden shows up in a windshield of a car in Logan tunnel inBoston...Where did that come from? Again...dumb, dumb,dumb....hopefully, this is enough lines to get this approved. if not,I'll be back......
This Cruise-Diaz vehicle was fast-paced and witty. My wife is not aCruise lover, nor a fan of action films, but she laughed harder than Idid. At one point, I thought we'd have to hospitalize her.The film starts a bit offbeat with a 'chance' meeting at an airport.Suspense builds as Cruise and Diaz engage in small talk on a commuterplane, with some turbulence making for a bumpy ride. You know somethingis up. When Diaz goes to the washroom, all hell breaks loose. Let'sjust say that when she exits from the can, the passengers on the planeare all sitting very quiet-like. Cruise tries to explain calmly andpatiently. Diaz doesn't know if he's serious. But the pilots arequiet-like, too. Thus our adventure begins. Someone is after something, well, more than *one* 'someone' -- and Cruise has the goods (the'MacGuffin' - the device Hitchcock used to drive the plot).I suppose there is a formula for these guy-girl buddy action flicks, but if the content is witty, and the story is pleasant to watch, we canforgive even if it's all been done before. After all: how many'innocent man caught up in intrigue' did Hitchcock do?Knight & Day actually takes pains to mimic movie components & deviceswe've seen in the past, almost by way of tribute. Here's a few:1> a well-trained agent and an innocent girl on the run - (BourneIdentity) 2> everyone is after a valuable package he has (the MacGuffindevice: Hitchcock) 3> a double-dealing CIA agent (Syriana - same dude, too) 4> Cruise looking over his sunglasses (Risky Business) 5> chasingbulls being led to the bullfight arena (City Slickers - same type ofoverhead angles, also!) 6> escape from a suspendedtorture/interrogation predicament (Lethal Weapon) 7> weapons, electronics, driving-to-escape expert (Bourne, again) 8> silly orimpossible travel at high-speed (Mission Impossible) 9> bumpy ride on aplane (Red Eye)These days, you have to 'vett' even the PG films very carefully if youdon't want to see a lot of smarmy stuff. We passed on Adam Sandler andtried this one. We liked it.
Pre-screenings were limited, and thumbs were primed to point down. Butguess what? The finished product is surprisingly enjoyable -particularly the rollicking first hour. Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz areobviously having a blast, and anytime they are on screen, the movie'senergy and fun level pegs the meter. The break-neck pace can keep theaudience guessing about where Cruise's character is dragging Diaz'sreluctant heroine off to next. Kudos to the leads for not carrying themovie with their effervescent acting, but also for doing many of theirown stunts.Tom Cruise and Cameron were good pair to be watched onscreen.Tom was very good in all the action scenes. His approach toseduce the babe was pretty cool.
This movie definitely had the potential to be a really great movie. It has everything from comedy to romance to action. What more could you ask for? Well, in my personal opinion the chemistry between June(Cameron Diaz) and Roy (Tom Cruise) wasn't that intense. I think chemistry should play a major part in a movie like this. Knight and Day's car crash's and weapons scenes are very entertaining with the exceptional Matrix related stunts. Overall, I gave the movie four stars. It's definitely worth buying.
Wouldn't have made a lot more sense to actually name the two leads Knight and Day? Instead they are Miller and Havens and we spend too much time trying to figure out how the title came about. Yes, I get the Knight part. Now this isn't Oscar worthy stuff and it's unlikely to make a Top 10 or even Top 25 list, but I will admit to having a good time. The film is filled with all the car chases, stunts and action you could want but it's all pretty predictable and repeatable. And there's no sex, although seeing Cameron Diaz stuffed into a red bikini has its draw. Still, Tom Cruise shows his funny, cool charm and Cameron Diaz is a real hoot. I liked it.
I've had great expectations for this movie. But It ended up being acomplete waste of time. The Bad >1. There's no chemistry between the lead actors. Everything seemed soforced. And the blame is on Tom Cruise. Cameron tried her best to makethings seem romantic between her and Cruise. But Tom was the one whowasn't really getting along with Diaz. Is it because, *He's a douche-bag?or, *He's married?or, *He doesn't like Diaz personally?or, *He's too full of himself?2. Now coming on to the the acting part, I have to say, Cruise & Diazboth disappointed me. Sure they both look good in this movie, but thosefake smiles couldn't save this movie from being a complete disaster.3. The plot is so messed up. In short, not interesting and predictable. Also this movie is filled with stupid and cheesy dialogs.4. When I go to see an action movie, I expect some really good action. But unfortunately, this movie has failed me in that department too. When we need action, it not there and when we don't need action, it'sthere. The bull-chasing scene is something I found completelyridiculous.Anyway, I hated this movie. I gave it a 4/10. I like Diaz but hateCruise! So, the bottom line is "Don't watch it, unless you wanna watchit for the heck of it."
Silly plot, bad special effects, just a bad movie. Not a Tom hater, liked most of his movies. This movie is terrible. Do not waste your money.
I have to rate this below average, because it is a completefabrication. At no moment in the film did I feel that this could beremotely possible, therefore the whole thing is nothing but an actionfairy-tale. The action was good, though, excepting the ludicrous CGI,and the actors were decent for their roles. That being said, the roleswere less than cardboard, resembling some insane cartoon that made nosense except in wishful- thinking-land.Bottom line: There is this "leave your brain at the door" saying. Now,after you did that, remove your brain again and leave it at the nextdoor. Given that, you can enjoy this completely mindless film. It wasnot bad, but almost not a film. You get my point?
One of the big surprises of the summer season, last year was this ringer from star Tom Cruise paired with Cameron Diaz in an action comedy which was the most entertaining film of the year. Unfortunately perhaps due to Cruise's notoriety off screen, the film didn't hit the bull's eye at the b.o. but if you like films like "Romancing the Stone", you'll enjoy it. Even Cameron Diaz whom I found was horrible in "Gangs Of New York" is a terrific foil for Tom and she's less grating than usual. James Mangold's direction is much better here than in the ill-fated "3:10 To Yuma" and the film moves at a brisk pace that'll keep you involved. Much better than the horrible "Killers" with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Hegel.
I'll admit up front that when I first put this movie in I was expecting another movie where Cameron Diaz played a ditzy, hopeless klutz who giggled non-stop and ended up with the good guy by film's end. I was only partly right and thankfully the good part. KNIGHT AND DAY worth watching.Diaz stars as June Havens, a young woman on her way home after picking up some car parts she was after to restore a GTO. At the airport, she is accidentally bumped into by a stranger we later find is named Roy Miller (Tom Cruise) not once but twice. As we all know from the way he behaves (and from seeing the film's trailer umpteen times), Roy is a spy on a mission. When June is bumped from her plane, Roy says that might be a good thing. But the group that is tracking down Roy decides otherwise and makes sure June gets on the plane, thinking perhaps there is a tie between the two. They converse a bit on the plane but when June decides to visit the powder room, the other passengers all attack Roy. It seems that all of them, including the pilot, are part of a group trying to take down Roy and retrieve something he has. When June returns she doesn't notice everyone else slumped in their seats, but Roy lets her know that they're all dead, including the pilot. Roy has also slipped something in her drink that makes her drowsy. Before she passes out, Roy tells her to remember to tell no one they met and that should anyone approach her and tell her they're taking her somewhere "safe" or "secure" it means she will most likely disappear off the face of the earth. And then he lands the plane safely, thought somewhat mangled, in a corn field. When June wakes the next day, she's home in her bed with notes from Roy reminding her to say she knows nothing. Will she do what he says? Of course not, this is a movie! Rather than keep quiet, she calls old flame Rodney and they meet to discuss what happened at a nearby diner. While eating who should show up but Roy who then whisks June away as a hostage, wounding Rodney in the process and rescuing her from would be captors. The movie pretty much continues this way with Roy coming to June's rescue each time she disregards what he tells her. Eventually the two pair up and work together even though June has no training at all in the world of espionage. Roy comes around and lets her know that he was assigned to protect a young genius named Simon (Paul Dano) who may have found the perfect fuel cell, as big as a battery and as powerful as the sun. The problems began when his partner Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard) turned traitor and framed Roy as one. Now he's doing his best to protect Simon, catch the bad guys who want the battery and rescue June all at the same time while he tries to clear his name. The chemistry between Diaz and Cruise is there but not played upon near as much as the explosions and gunplay seen throughout the film. But even those scenes are cut short at times when June is rendered unconscious time and time again. Perhaps not enough to make it a downfall of the film, but it can be annoying at times. It always seems to be used when they make a change of locale going from the U.S. to the Alps and on to Spain. Action fans will have plenty to walk away happy with here as both leads do a number of their own stunts adding a touch of reality to the mix. Car chases, gun battles, hand to hand combat and more are all on display most of the time here, mixed in with a small touch of comedy. As I said at the start, I was worried there'd be more than enough of this but they actually keep it to a minimum. Rather than play off of Diaz' normal ditzy girl they instead provide Cruise with most of the humor as he deftly snaps one liners left and right in the middle of the action scenes. When released, the film didn't do the phenomenal business expected with the two stars and that's sad because it truly does offer a good time. It won't become a cure for illness, it won't solve the world's major problems in 109 minutes, but it will put a smile on your face as the action never stops and the romance blooms during the most dangerous of situations. Cruise and Diaz turn in fine performances making it all seem so easy. Their characters aren't given a ton of depth but at the same time you feel like you known them both so well. If you're looking for a good time that offers a bit of diversion from day to day life then you'll find this one pure entertainment. What more could you ask for from a movie?
20th Century Fox falsely advertised KNIGHT AND DAY as the best summermovie for Adults. Not so, McGee; this one was made for 12 year old's--- just like 90% of the boring junk from today's Hollywood. The good points are Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz and their interplay. There are maybe 4 or 5 good laughs. And the on-location scenery, particularly in Europe, is nice to look at.As for the story, there are multiple car chases, explosions, 50 to 100dead bodies (mostly mowed down by machine gun fire), all the usualsame-old same-old from the cocaine soaked nitwits that write"screenplays" but ought to enter re-hab instead. It was interesting to watch the Liberal Media having one virtual orgasmover the "disappointing" box office results -- beginning with thefilm's first hour in theaters; supposedly marking the dead end of TomCruise and his career. I have no clue why the Tweedledum Tweedledeemedia hate Tom Cruise. I don't like Scientology but could not care lessif Cruise does. As for jumping up and down on a sofa on TV, this iswhat celebrities do. There are worse things, like molesting children, but the media folks love Michael Jackson and hate Tom Cruise. Go figurethese jerks.
That was just perfect - great action, great humor, great acting andnothing to complain about. OK, maybe some action scenes are a little bit overdone but that's ahumorous action movie and if you just want to have a good hour and ahalf (like me) you probably don't care so much about that.Tom and Cameron have great chemistry... it was very nice to watch thenact together.Just watch it... you won't regret it...Blah blah blah... and blah once moreHave a nice day!!! Be good...
*** This review is full of spoilers. Haven't see it yet? Go watch itnow ! *** *** This is not a long review, it just looks long ***** Knight: l'm not one of those ''l told you so'' kind of guys, but l didwarn you to stay off the plane last night.Day: When? Knight: Well, when l said, ''Sometimes things happen for a reason."Day: That's not a warning, Roy! That's like a needlepoint expression ora bumper sticker.Day: Next time, try, ''June, if you get on this plane, you will f*c*ingdie! '' **Action-Comedy genre has become so overrated with all those preposterouswannabes proliferating in. Really how many movies would you tag asAction-Comedy? 5 maybe 6. What actors come to mind when you hearAction-Comedy? 3 or 4 good names? In reality its very hard to make aAction-Comedy Click (unless you are Jackie Chan or something).I walked into this movie with no prior knowledge of reviews,word-of-mouth. I was pleasantly surprised. This is a goodRom-Com-Action movie. It brought me back memories of a greatAction-Comedy: True Lies (1994).It took about 10 mins into the movie to understand the movie name.-Opposites Attract- She is the Damsel in distress and He is the Knightin shining armour. She likes to be rescued by him (or is that armourshining after all?). He is drowned in the night, begins to see the daywhen around her. -No, scratch that last line.** Knight: What day is it today? Day: It's "someday"! Knight: Someday. That's a dangerous word. It's really just a code for'never'. **There are a lot of sutle information in the movie. I like that. Thanksto the Director and Writer for not spelling out each and everyinformation, we have brains too. Since its high paced, we have to watchit twice to get some through. Like what is Knight's real name? ItsM.K., his mom spells it out :) Go watch the movie again !! Its really high paced with heavy scene jumps. I bet the Director andChoreographer designed it this way. They have Brains too you know. Takethis scene jump:-** Frame1: The Knight has fallen (Literally).Frame2: "Did you secure the Kid? Yeah." Frame3: Kid is led to a benz car (in front of, presumably, CIAbuilding).Frame4: "Did they find Roy? We'll find the body. We have to. He wentdown with the Zephyr." Now, she is led to a beautiful black Benz.Frame5: She wakes in a turbulent airplane, turns right. (obviouslylooking for the Knight) Frame6: She wakes up in bed.Frame7: She's in the yellow dress again, waving and smiling at Rodney.(I bet you noticed the girl in the black dress stooping towardsRodney). (Has he moved on with the new found fame?) Frame8: Her sister is married. She hugs her. Rodney bends down andpicks up his Hat. **Mind you all this happens in exactly one minute. This movie is almosttwo hours, yet it feels like just one. Awesome high-paced movie. ** Day: With me, without me. With me, without me. Knight: With you. **Some movies to go along: Romancing the Stone (1984), Eraser (1996),True Lies (1994), The Peacemaker (1997), Salt (2010), Mr. & Mrs. Smith(2005) . -Scratch the last one.Eagerly awaiting a next release. Possibility of more characterdevelopment. Especially the father character Frank.K could pull someaction.
Warning: Don't go into this movie expecting Bourne or Wanted, and evenif you do, don't be a grump when it turns out to be a humorous, wellthought out, balance between espionage, romance, and comedy / parody. In addition, Wichita's airport is nowhere near that nice. It's actuallyquite dull for the air capitol. Just a minor flaw. This movie was absolutely fantastic, and I would certainly recommend itto anyone who just wants to watch a movie with family, friends, oranyone in general. After hearing the line "I shot the first pilot, whoaccidentally shot the second pilot", I realized this would be aridiculous comedy, and put all previous thoughts aside. I hadn't heardanything about the movie, and had been skeptical about renting it assuch, I was honestly anticipating a cheesy romance about espionagerather than what it truly is. There are car chases, ludicrousgunfights, plenty of clichés, and other things that would make aserious movie terrible; however, in this, it just adds to the fun. Ifyou want to go watch an action movie, watch an action movie, 'causethis won't be for you.
What a breath of fresh air! Finally, an action film which makes youcare about the characters enough to allows you to experience theiradventures, inner worlds, mutual interactions, all in a package of anenjoyable light touch beautifully enveloped with adventurous mystery. You will not find one boring moment in this film; only non stop action, beautiful moments of interaction, and plenty of fun that is reallyliberating. This is not a romantic comedy by the way. I had a fabulous time watching this movie and decided to rate it at 10due to it being utterly refreshing compared with so many other moviesthat I watched recently. It is exciting, alive, mysterious and fun. What else can you ask for?Go have a great time!
DUG THIS MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH......WHY THE CRITICS DONT GET IT ....SOMETIMES WE NEED JUST UNADULTERATED FUN WHEN WE SEE A MOVIE. IT THIS WAS ALL THATI GIVE IT AN B+ ONLY BECAUSE OF SOME CONTINUITY ISSUES, I WOULD HAVE GIVEN IT AN A I HAVE NOTICE RECENTLY SOME MOVE EDITORS ARE LOSING THERE TOUCH.
