No Disappointment for the Epic of the Owls

I could tell from the trailer it was going to be a great movie from thestart, especially when you put a song like "Kings and Queens" by 30Seconds to Mars with the trailer itself, but let's get to the movieitself, which, I must say, fulfilled my expectations. The special effects, like most movies I've seen over the past fewyears, were amazing. In fact, the details were as if they were real asit was in Avatar. In fact, you had to put the film in slow motion (e.g.When Soren and Gylphie escape Nyra and 2 of her minions) at times inorder to fully capture these effects. Also, how about the development of these characters? Soren at the endof the film is not the same as he was in the beginning, and actually, neither is Kludd, Gylphie, or Eglantine. They all grow into a maturepersona throughout their appearance in the film, for better or worse.Third, for those of you who like to look for a purpose to films, thetheme here is actually not very hard to solve after you get wowed intoits special effects, and yes, the plot's not original as it came from aseries of books, but the theme here is very powerful and its storylineis still quite captivating.Fourth, look at the storyline itself. It's an epic story of how anunlikely group of owls go on this adventure to find the Guardians andthen become warriors in a fight against "The Prue Ones". I've readepics like this, but never have I seen that kind of story told in theform of owls, and that is actually part of what made me want to seethis film. What also separates this from epics I've read is that it haseven made me laugh on some occasions.Overall, it's a great movie for any group of any number, just as longas you can stand to see what it's like to be "Moonwinked" or to haveowls beat the living pulp out of each other in the final battle. I givethis movie a 9.5 out of 10 for being an awesome, real-looking epic ofthe owls.

Not A Children's Movie

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I am a Senior Citizen that loves animated movies and this was not for children. I liked it very much. Beutiful animation. Story of triumph of good over evil. Very well done.

They completely made up their own story!

I am a huge fan of the Guardian of Ga'Hoole books, and I was extremelyexcited about watching the movie. However, it was a complete FAIL! Hereis the list why I rated this movie 4 stars:1) In the book Kludd purposely pushed Soren off the tree, while in themovie they portray it as if it were an accident!2) The leaders of St. Aegolius are missing! Instead of Sproon andSkench leading the "zombie owlets" it's the 'Pure Ones' instead! Andthe 'Pure Ones' were introduced in the 3rd book not in the verybeginning when Soren and Gilfie where abducted!!! 3) The development of character is bad, bad, bad! It was all toorushed, when you read the book, (before they where even close to halfway of escaping St. Aegolius) you started to like the owls, so if theydied you would feel disappointed. Whereas for the movie, if Gylfiehappened to die as they were trying to escape, the only thing you wouldthink will be "Awwww. The cute little owlet died." And remember thats only the big let downs. They also missed tons ofother important details. They basically made up there own story... it'sdisappointing

Great 3d and the story keeps you interested...MOST BEAUTIFUL MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I watched this movie in 3d with my lady. This movie will just WOW your eyes. I am a movie buff, and this was the most stunning visuals i have ever seen. The owls are freaking gorgeous...lol...while watching this movie i thought to myself i actually wanted that white owl:0 The 2d version is great also. A friend came over and the kids were watching the dvd on their 37 inch hd tv...my friend was like WHAT IS THAT! lol. he couldn't stop looking at it(no joke it was that gorgeous). Had he seen it in 3d on my panny, he'd have tripped for real. If you want to get the most out your tv's visual's...this is a must buy. The 3d was better than Tangled 3d(which i still love) Step Up 3d(which is cool) and Tron 3d can't even come close...The trees, water, flying and fighting of the owls, the shiny feathers of the owls...everything about this movie...ridiculous in detail. GET THIS MOVIE!!! I know my review is saying the same thing...but i mean...you just got to see it to know what I mean. I have a panny gt25 3d tv also if that helps anyone out there looking to buy this movie. The greatest thing about this movie is that the story keeps you interested. Its not a movie where you buy only for the 3d. You will actually watch this movie...the 3d and beauty will just AMAZE you and the story is quite suspenseful. Also, I treat my 3d movies like a movie theater...meaning I wait til its nighttime, turn off the lights and enjoy.

Review for Owls of Ga'Hoole

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (Amazon Instant Video) I enjoyed this movie even though I haven't read the books. I think they combined several of the books into this movie, but the storyline was easy for me to follow. The storyline was kind of familiar and reminded me of Star Wars, but I still liked it. I also thought the owls looked extremely realistic.

Pretty mature

For a movie that is rated PG, it is pretty mature. It has themes thatmight be a bit too scary. But then again, who am I to say what theyouth will find scary nowadays? The German rating board on the otherhand felt it knew what is scary to kids or not. For it to be releasedwith the same PG rating that it got in America it had to be cut a fewminutes. Sounds crazy? It's the truth though.Apart from that the 3-D effect is really good. That the guy who broughtas 300 would not have a problem handling action scenes was a given. Butwhat about the furry animals? They look amazing. And though I do notknow the source of the material on hand, I do know that the storyworks. It's not groundbreaking, but it dares doing things and goingplaces, where other "child" movies would shy away from. Kudos for thattoo.Watch it, but be aware, that it might get scary at times. Not as muchfor you (if you're an adult), but for the little ones.

Obviously a 3-D Must

After hearing it praised as a "wonderful, exciting movie for the wholefamily" I was really looking forward to "Legends of the Guardians: theOwls of Ga'Hoole"...only to be bitterly disappointed by the movie'sconfusing narrative, borrowed from fairy-tales (mainly H.C. Andersen's)and the Star Wars-saga (the good owls' island looks like Ewok-land, andthe air-fights between good and evil use very similar flight patterns).Plus, I couldn't tell the owls apart! Even their voices sounded alike. It probably didn't help to see "Legends" in 2-D either. My son wishedwe had seen "Tangled" instead, which he considers a girl-movie. I amnot familiar with the books the movie is based on.

never judge a book by its cover

I must say this film didn't look very good. Talking owls, really? If Ishould have learned anything in my life its that I shouldn't ever judgeanything or anyone by first impressions. These guys knew they had aradical and untested idea, so it seems they just decided to make oneawesome movie. I was completely blown away, ten minutes in it becameclear this was going to be a beautiful 3d thrill ride with an expertlycrafted story and fun and believable characters. And the animation istop notch. If you appreciate art best when in motion, this is yourmovie. The colors are well balanced and are high contrast. Motionoccurs strictly to the existing laws of physics. Light refracts andreflects with incredible precision, their retinas are luminous with thesurrounding light, flight is exactly the sublime peace/chaos ebb andflow you want it to be, and of the movie makes the many epic battlescenes similar to what we see on national geographic. Beauitiful.

Not bad, but slightly disappointed

I saw every trailer for this movie and it looked very epic. Was totallylooking forward to seeing it! In 3d too! I envisioned a differentintro, where it literally showed the "story" and then the owls wererevealed as telling the story. Also, I had figured based on thetrailers, that the one song that is played (forgot the name) would bein the final battle scene. But regardless, I really enjoyed it. I loved the 3d, I loved the humor.I loved how real it was. I was surprised when the ending suddenly came, but regardless, job well done! And it was the first movie I have seen in theaters by myself :)

Great family movie

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray Combo) (Blu-ray) I wasn't really sure what the movie would be all about before my purchase, but was pleasantly surprised after watching the movie. It was a great family movie that we watched with our two grandchildren, ages 4 and 5. I was a little concerned that it may be too scary for them, especially when I heard that the 5 year old was afraid of owls. While he sat on the edge of his seat thru the whole movie, he was not afraid. He really liked the movie.

Zack Snyder is an all rounder....Go for this one in 3d ........ !

Zack Snyder did it once again and he is going to continue giving hitsin the long run as well. With movies like 300 and Watchmen to hisfame-bag his next big flick Sucker Punch is all set to release thisyear while Superman: Man of steel and Xerxes are his next big projects. Well talking about the Legend of the guardians:The Owls of Ga'Hoole, this one's a must go. One of the finest animations of all times, thismovie had not only its beautiful cinematography and marvellous scenicsurroundings to offer but also a wonderful storyline that it follows.Every aspect of the emotions that ought to be present in a countenancewas well depicted in the movie. Every character was extremely wellpersonified. I was wonder-struck by the animation. The story was wellinterwoven which suited the animation as it was adventurous and quitegripping too.Soren(voice of Jim Sturgess), the main character in the story is an owlwho believes in the stories he has been told for years and he hangsonto that faith which proves eventually that his belief was not merelya myth but clearly a fact. He and his brother Kludd(Ryan Kwanten) endup falling from the branch of their home. They were held captive by adifferent species of owls who were preparing the owls for a battleagainst the guardians. The brethren part ways once the path ofrighteousness was put to test. Kludd chose to work for them while Sorenalong with Gylfie(Emily Barclay) decided to take off the moment theygot an opportunity. He learns to fly in a strange situation with theassistance of a fellow owl in their army who aids them to escape. Sorenand Gylfie fly off together on an adventurous sojourn to seek theguardians, which Soren believed existed (and they did exist) thusalerting the guardians of the peril on hand. The guardians returnunprepared to the land of the enemies only to find an ambush caused bya fellow guardian who turns out to be a traitor. Soren returns to theland and heroically saves the jeopardized lives of the guardianseventually. The movie is a must-watch.It should be seen in 3d or IMAX for a fullthrilling experience. There are several breathtaking scenes in themovie that seriously demand an IMAX 4d feel. I'd recommend everyone togo for this movie as probably no one would regret watching this flick.

An Adventure Story With a Message

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I knew virtually nothing about this movie before it was delivered to me. I had just gotten a new 3D TV and was looking for some movies to watch in 3D and this seemed like a good choice. I was not even aware of the book series by Kathryn Lasky but decided the movie could be entertaining to watch. When I watched it for the first time I was interested in the standards of morality promoted by the movie; the age-old conflict between good and evil was clearly defined. The temptations that evil might present to some and the difficulty of resisting if one is not solidly grounded by a moral framework is presented in a way younger audiences can appreciate. The movie is an adventure filled with excitement, danger, and heroic acts of bravery. The 3D effect is nicely done and the surround sound very good.I've not seen the 2D version but would recommend this movie for the family as it promotes those qualities most of us want for ourselves and those we love.

Prettiest animation film

So the guys behind happy feet are doing this movie. Good: even if happyfeet is about 3 years old, its still the prettiest animation moviearound.Legend of guardian is so beautiful that he should be in a category ofits own. You cant compare it to anything else. Pixar is better to tella story and create character, but this movie is so pretty that otherstudio should be ashamed...Zack Snyder signature is they're, there's a lot of close up and slomotion. But unless watchmen, the slo motion make sense here. They letyou appreciate all the beauty in the frame. Its not the greatest story, its basic and predictable, but the beautyof the landscape, of shades, of particles and feathers make it a greatmovie to watch...

Celebrate the Artistry

Was looking forward to this in IMAX 3D,so we went to the Rave Complex in Los Angeles for the experience, Friday night. The extra illumination the format provides, and the 12,000 watt sound system brings the artistry on all levels, to a wonderful cinematic journey. With each CGI film the colors and detail are becoming more phenomenal for the viewer, in this case technology is not overtaking the story. The breath taking 3D totally immerses the viewer. Unlike other films, this year shot in 2D ,and then transferred. The screen adaption of this beloved story line deserves a nod as does the overall continuity of the unfolding adventure. With some viewers here talking about its suitability for a younger audience, the quote gore factor, is non existent, the battle sequences are bloodless, and as we know the animal kingdoms can be quite the opposite in reality.A big applause to all the artists involved, the colors are the best I have seen so far.As is the lighting, and the character studies.Thankfully the soundtrack isn't obnoxious, as it has been in other films this year. This is a huge classic storytelling event. It should be embraced on the big screen, and I would highly suggest the IMAX format.

Amazing 3D

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians-Owls of Ga'hoole (Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray Combo) (Blu-ray) Having recently purchased a 3D TV, we were hungry for some movies. We were very happy with this one. It was a good story, and the 3D was amazing. Much better than others we have seen. We highly recommendthis one.

Legends of the Guardians

This review is from: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole (DVD) I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie but my son absolutely loved it! He was 5 when he first saw it and he loved it so much I bought for his birthday. He really enjoyed the extras, learning about owls. He even surprised me at the zoo when he rattled off a few owl facts!

therubixtheory (2012-05-16 12:46)

Exactly the kind of story I was hoping for

Although I love a fun and crazy animation I have been looking forwardto the day one comes out that tries to be deep, like any Studio Ghiblimovie, and this went totally beyond my expectations. Its exactly the movie 9 would've been had it had better dialogue. Thevisuals are sometimes breathtaking, the jokes are so clever they seemlike they've never been told before, you could really sense the emotionof every character, it reminded me so much of epic tales like DunctonWood and Watership Down and the dialogue is so, so well done.I've never read the books but this is the best book adaption i've everseen and i didn't spot anything wrong. So why on earth hasn't this movie made a lot of money? Why are peoplewasting their time on Cat's and Dog's 3d and Vampires Suck? Why arethere so many mixed reviews about this film? If there is no sequel thenits a sad loss to the world.
