Another Overlong SNL Skit, But Funnier Than Most

MacGruber is another movie based on a Saturday Night Live skit. And I'd say it's the best since Wayne's World. That's not to say that it's great. It takes a while for MacGruber to find its groove. It starts off kind of dull, but it gets funnier and better as it goes along. And it even has some surprisingly violent action sequences. Almost four stars out of five. Almost.

Will Forte is Unbearable

His 10 seconds in Beerfest was 10 times more funny than this. I can't believe how many critics were paid to praise this film, when I can't seem to find any enjoyment in it. The script is covered with cheesy dialogue that pays homage to old 80's/90's action movies, but none of it is funny. The homoerotic nonsense is just cringeworthy without the unintentional giggles. Macgruber's drawn out moaning in the bedroom is one extremely extended joke that started at a chuckle and ended with a headache. Yes, Macgruber is awful. I hate to say this because I had a lot of faith in it, but it lays waste to all the actors by denting their careers. Val Kilmer? Ryan Philippe? What could go wrong?I'm just trying to be helpful...SAVE your money. If you like watching full frontal and backside male nudity, and you laugh to the sight of vegetables in a males rectum, have a blast. There are those of us who enjoy taste in comedy like the recent Apatow efforts and the great comedies on television these days. Macgruber takes its formula from Year One and tries to cram vulgarity into one long joke that fails to be the least bit clever. Young kids will find this funny, but its insulting to make a R-rated movie that calls me the audience. I laughed a few times at some decent points of Forte's dialogue, but his big picture just made my stomache turn. You want a good spoof? Watch Hot Shots! They actually made fun of things in that movie instead of leaning on obessive gross jokes like a life-saving crutch. Epic fail, MacGruber. Epic Fail.

Funny when it's tighly packed into a skit. Terrible when it's a 90 minute movie

SNL hasn't really produced a comedy worth watching since "Wayne'sWorld"......mainly due to the fact that SNL doesn't have that muchtalent anymore. In fact, the cast members that do show the slightestbit of humor, are usually gone after one or two seasons. Maybe this isSNL's shot in the dark, in hopes to revive a once hilarious show thathad everyone talking.Well, if you have cheked out SNL lately, you will find that it jokesare a little old and tired. And it is pretty much te same case with"MacGruber". This movie is exactly what you think it is.......a skitthat might be funny if it were summed up in about 2 minutes, butinstead it's a tiresome 90 minute film. A lot, if not all the jokes runflat. And they try to make it seem like what they are doing ishilarious, by pausing for a really long time after one of thecharacters delivers a punch line.....yeah, that might work when yourdoing something LIVE, but in a movie, it just makes you look like aretard. The humor is really nothing new here......maybe some new and wittydialogue. But after a while, even that grew boring. But the two reasonswhy i think this movie failed miserably, are the writing, and the leadrole. Who is this guy again? I mean come on, you give SNL movie rolesto Mike Meyers, Chevy Chase, and Daney Carvey......not some douche whoyou have never ever heard of. And if you do give it to someone, makesure he is funny enough to carry a movie on is own.Bottom Line.........like i said before, it's a SNL skit that shouldhave stayed a skit. Because stretching it out, made it un-bearable towatch. If this was SNL's attempt to draw in a new audience, theyfailed.

It's stupid but soooo funny!!

This review is from: MacGruber (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Is this a ridiculously stupid and immature comedic movie? Yes. But there are some really great moments in the silliness of it. MacGruber actually does a great spoof of the 80s super action genre. Little things like TE veteran hating the rookie for no apparent reason and the hero starting the movie in a monastery are pretty spot on. Also Will Forte is at his best here and Kristen wiig turns in her usual hilarious performance. Basically it's a stupid movie but it's a really funny stupid movie!! Very quotable

chriswilliams7125 (2012-05-15 16:18)

Will forte you suck! Kristen Wiig I'm disappointed.

Im a thirteen year old and i was looking forward to seeing this movieand was going to see it when it came out. Then the parental guide cameout for the film and i was disgusted. The perverted gross out bull crapthat they use in this film is gross and nauseating. The SNL sketchesare funny and creative but this film is just plane old crap.I was really looking forward to seeing this flick with my dad and i asready to go. I was really mad. Im a Christian and the gross outreferences they use on god makes me want to vomit. The sex scene is just to gross to talk about and i liked will fortebefore this came out now I'm just sick to my stomach. Im happy that youwere the bomb of the summer with only 8 million dollars made youdesserve it. Im gonna watch a good movie like Braveheart. If you seethis movie your just gross. If i could give this a negative rating idefinitely would but i cant so 1.

Consistently mediocre

Those who choose to parody a genre should know what they are doingbefore they proceed. The producers of this movie did not know what theywere doing. Proof of that is this movie. The humor is flat, the leadactor not funny, the supporting cast unimpressive and it's not evencampy. But at least the movie is consistent - consistently mediocre. It's never quite bad enough to write it off as a total loss but itnever rises to the occasion either as a funny movie. The movie attemptsto be silly but instead it's boring. It tries to borrow from otheraction-adventure movies but succeeds in being a travesty. This moviefails where a movie like Tropic Thunder succeeds. Why this is the caseis a matter for speculation. But one thing is for certain - this movieis destined for a quick trip to DVD land, the place where even a bomblike this can finally have its chance to explode.

I'm Not Going to Tell You the Punchlines - Good Silly Comedy Definitely Not for Kids

I thought MacGruber was the funniest SNL movie in a long time. It, like, Wayne's World, references several iconic movies, but I thought MacGruber did a better job of sending up specific genres, from the Zalman King soft core to the 80's action flicks. Nothing was neglected - lighting, music, super tight shots were all right where they were supposed to be.The cast was amazing. Val Kilmer, whom I remember from many of the kinds of movies that get spoofed in this one, is both hysterically funny and also pitch perfect playing exactly the same arrogant foil he played in so many of those earlier movies. Will Forte's charm held up for the length of the movie, which, to be honest, I was a little wary about when I decided to see this. And Kristen Wiig is just uncanny. She is an expert at making her characters, however strange, rootable and, well, huggable. And she just disappears into Vicky.Ryan Phillippe does a mostly fantastic job with his character - so good he made both me and the friend I saw this with forget all those horrible lip-pursing handsome roles he keeps taking. I had no idea he could be this funny. The humor is thoroughly gross and gory (people are blown up and dispatched) and juvenile and inappropriate in the best possible ways. I did deduct one star for some mild homophobic humor, because the movie may hark back to 1990, but this is 2010.

pattistanley57 (2012-05-06 14:10)

Save your money

The most disgusting, crude, rude movie I've ever seen. My friends and Ikept sitting there thinking it HAD to get better. It didn't. The sexscenes, the celery up the butt, the plain stupid dialog...it just goeson and on. I seriously think they ruined 80's music for me! I used tojudge movies by whether I would pay to see them...my late husband was areviewer and we had comp tickets to most movies...Now I judge them byhow much I'd pay to see them....NOTHING. I had not seen the SNL sketch;however, I had seen the previews and expected it to be mildly funny.Did not expect the gratuitous potty humor and pure raunch. Please donot take children to see this film. I wouldn't even want teenagers tosee the film. It is rated R for a reason.

WORST MOVIE EVER

This review is from: MacGruber (Unrated Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I just had to add my vote. This movie is cr*p and I wasted my $ on it. Dissapointed. Blu Ray Quality is OK but for what!

(2012-05-05 09:03)

Oh no

I love Will Forte and Kristen Wiig. I also love the MacGruber sketches on SNL. I did not love this movie. I laughed two times in the movie. One was the opening MacGruber song and the other was watching him carry the car stereo with him each time he left the car. The rest of the movie just felt forced and the jokes just didn't hit. The situations were there, they just didn't hit for me. I do love stupid movies. I liked Hot Rod of all things, but this one just didn't work for me.

dtucker86 (2012-05-05 11:33)

I'm somewhat at a loss for words

Movies that are based on Saturday Night Live sketches usually fall flatat the box office. Its hard to stretch one little sketch into a fulllength film obviously. Magruber is not a film for the sensitive. It isvery vulgar and its hero is more annoying then anything else. WillForte just doesn't chew the scenery, he grinds it into baby food! ValKilmer pretty much does the same as the bad guy. What made me like thisfilm isn't its star, but Kristen Wiig as Vicki and Ryan Phillippe asLt. Piper. They both give great comic performances. Wiig has ahowlingly funny moment in the coffee shop while shes wearing a wire.Actually the real hero of the film is Piper, if it hadn't been for himMagruber would have been dead several times over. In addition, PowersBoothe gives a great performance as Magruber's frustrated commandingofficer. I wanted to mention that I learned something watching thisfilm, I didn't know what a double decker was, now I do.

walterwhite (2012-05-05 05:34)

Who is MacGruber?

We still don't know, but the question stays with me. The film is NakedGun or Get Smart brought up to date with outrageousness that can offendcurrent sensibility. If it can't achieve that, then what is the point? It is very funny. But it is more. One of the henchmen is namedHossBender, and this is the key to insight into the character ofMacGruber. He is one of Fassbinder's characters, with complex motivesand behavior that does not boil down to anything simple and obvious. Will Forte is remarkable. Don't look for deep plot. Even parody takessecond place to character. But what a character!Pay no attention to the reviews. See it for yourself and think foryourself.

Will Arnett Has Fantastic Performance

There were a lot of reasons why I was doubtful about the success ofthis movie. First, I had seen many Saturday Night Live movies and werenot satisfied with many of them, and had even more doubt about turninga 90 second clip into a 90 minute feature film. However, I was quitesurprised about how funny this movie actually became. The situationswere quite predictable but the movie was not about the plot complexityas it was about characters. Kritsen Wiig and Will Arnett were able tosuccessfully transplant their television chemistry onto the film reelwith some remarkably funny scenes. I recommend this film to anybody whoenjoyed "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" for its style of humorand anyone familiar with Saturday Night Live.

The Vidiot Reviews...

MacGruberThere are three telltale signs you're watching a comedy based on aSaturday Night Live sketch: the title character is wearing a wig, thejokes are abysmal, and there are no Asians in the cast.Obeying that rule of three is this offering inspired by MacGyver. When his nemesis Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) hijacks a nuclear warhead,ex-special agent MacGruber (Will Forte) comes out of retirement with avengeance.Forming a team consisting of Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Lt.Piper (Ryan Phillippe), MacGruber sets out to stop Von Cunth fromgetting the passcodes needed to launch the warhead. While his minute-long sketches usually find MacGruber defusing a bomb,in his film debut, however, he just stars in one.Pieced together with a pipe cleaner plot and poop jokes, MacGruber'sbig mistake is that, unlike SNL, it doesn't use a flashing laughprompter to tell viewers something is funny. Better as a sketch. Much better

There are some sights that I had hoped to go the rest of my life without witnessing, and now that I have seen "MacGruber," I can safely say that a nude Will Forte with a celery stalk protruding from a certain bodily orifice - not once, but twice - is one of them. "MacGruber" is based on a Saturday Night Live sketch which parodies the 80's show "MacGyver." Feature-length movies based on SNL sketches are like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead: when they're good, they're very good, and when they're bad, they're horrid. This is one of the latter.MacGruber is a rather insecure man, despite supposedly being brilliant at assembling gadgets to detonate the bomb or whatever. He also seems to have a touch of ADD because he's often easily distracted while in the midst of a crisis. Although retired at the start of the movie, he's drafted to find a man who incidentally, murdered his fiance at the altar. (This is shown in vivid flashback.) He scorns the assistance of rookie Ryan Philippe, and assembles a crack team of top agents to help him on his quest, but this backfires. So he swallows his pride, takes Ryan Philippe and Kristen Wiig and goes to seek revenge. In the film's defense, I suppose you could argue that it's supposed to be goofy - it's a parody. But there are funny parodies and parodies where you keep waiting for the humor to arrive, and this was one of the latter. Is there anything positive I can write about the movie? Well, Kristen Wiig, as MacGruber's sidekick and love interest, is adorable, if underused, and Val Kilmer playing the villain is amusing. Still, it's not quite as bad as say, "It's Pat," or "Stuart Saves His Family" (to use older examples), but it's not good either.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, YOU MUST BE POUNDING YOUR OWN CUNTH

When this movie was first released on disc, I immediately read some of the reviews on amazon, just because I wanted to see what the first reviews were on it. Almost all of the reviews were five star, and I couldn't have agreed more with the reviews. I went to the movies to see this, not knowing what to expect. All I know is, being a fan of Saturday Night Live since growing up, I found that SNL has certainly had a couple of years of low points with material that was basically spoofs of TV, seemingly unable to create original characters, which really was the missing highlight of the show. Now, Macgruber may be a take on Macgyver, but, he certainly is played with a personality all his own. I believe Saturday Night Live has been back and better than ever. The cast is fabulous, and the show is hilarous. With skits over the past few years such as Gilly, What's Up With That?, The Manuel Ortiz Show, Andy Samberg's awaited SNL digital short every episode, etc., SNL is at the top again. Being said that, when I went to see Macgruber, it was absolutely hysterical! One of the funniest favorite movies that I had seen in a long time was Step Brothers, and this movie was right up there as new favorite funniest movie. How can you watch this movie and not laugh!? It's called senseless, over the top, ridiculous humor! And I loved every minute of it! What do you people think, that the cast was trying to go for Academy Award nominations? What I love is that it has every sick sense of humor you could possibly imagine, (just like the skits that I've written over the years), and it pushes the vulgarity to the absolute limit, which works. The writing is brilliant. Everyone remember when they first saw South Park the Movie? My jaw dropped when the little children of Colorado started to drop the F-Bomb after seeing Terrance and Philip. I couldn't believe it, but it was FUNNY and even critics agreed. Which is why Macgruber is so funny. I never expected Will Forte to have such a different take on the character. When you start getting into the movie, and you see such a change in the personality of the character from on the SNL sketches, that is what makes it unique and not just a slow, drawn out 90-minute sketch of the show. Its terrific cast, I might add, is also what makes it work. You already have the brilliance of Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, (Check out The Brothers Solomon by the way) and throw in Ryan Phillipe, Val Kilmer, and Powers Boothe into the mix, and you see a side you haven't seen as far as their willingness to take part in such a hilarious, absurd, laughfest. All I gotta say is, you have to be a stuck up(and I mean stuck up your woo-hoo!) stalk of celery yourself with no sense of humor whatsoever, to actually sit down and not even crack a smile at this picture. I couldn't wait for this movie to be released, and as soon as it was, my wife went out and bought it for me as a gift. I could sit down and watch this movie over and over and laugh every time, and I have. People, don't listen to the one-star reviews that have begun to plague the movie on this site. Buy it, and I guarantee you won't believe what you see and you will enjoy every minute of it!!

Pretty horrible movie

I thought this movie would be funny but I found myself bored after the first 15 minutes, and then some really crude humor. I skimmed through the movie and there was very crude humor throughout, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone under the age of 21.

A funny action-packed colourful little nugget of fun

I found 'MacGruber' to be a thoroughly enjoyable flick. One can expectlots of laughter from this comedy. Even though in terms of story, thisisn't much different from other super sleuth comedies but it still is acharming film. This movie is brilliant! I loved every minute of it andI couldn't stop laughing! Every Indian person should watch this. Thestoryline is great and the actors and actresses are great in the movieand bring the movie to life. I have no complaints! This is one of themost hilarious comic produces of Hollywood. Most people are apt to labelit run of the mill stuff that Hollywood churns outmindlessly(yes..accepted..this is mindless..but you have to watch WillForte in this one)..Drab and forgetful. He are there for the usual stuff. Getting paid andstrutting around irritating viewers. The movie is a slight offshoot(a euphemism of course) of the whole nineyards. Awesome is the word. You have to watch the histrionics of JohnyForte especially. This is one of the very very rare Hindi movies where Iactually laughed out aloud.Especially with Johny Fortes comicantics. Please don't miss this one at all.OMG! I am loving this!Overall I give it a 9/10 rating .. funny to thehilt, his innocent, miserable P.I. who cannot remember names is simplyfantastic. At least it was an American movie with crisp action scenes.Even the climax of the movie was fine. If possible, they can come witha good sequel to the movie!!!

Pretty bad

I saw this one based on a very positive Rotten Tomatoes review. Iusually shy away from SNL cast movies as most are pretty weak but gaveit a shot. I actually like the MacGruber skits on SNL. What you willget is closer to the Ladies Man than Ron Burgundy. The character istaken from the skit, but the movie wanders away from even that weaksauce most of the time. The MacGyver spoof concept had some potentialbut it is more of a bad Naked Gun with Forte's bathroom humourreplacing Neilson's Mr McGoo bumbling. Most of the acting with theexception of Wieg was pretty good, but there was just not much worthlaughing at, even if you have a crude sense of humour. The is amarginal renter.

CirAndreasSiCorneliusAh (2012-04-30 10:52)

Totall waste of time

Not even worth having on in the background while you are doingsomething else. I like a lot of silly, ridiculous comedies. Many withlow budgets. But this was as if they took one of the worse SaturdayNight Live skits, one of those you can't believe they really thoughtwas going to be funny, and stretched it out into a movie. I tried tostick with it, thinking it had to get better, but had to turn it offafter 45min. Even running at higher speed from my DVR didn't help. Notevery review requires 10 lines. This new requirement of 10 linesminimum is total idiocy. Or, is it an attempt to skew the submittedreviews toward the positive since it is a lot easier to think of morethings to say about decent movies. When a movie is completely badthroughout with terrible acting, directing and writing, how many wordsdoes it take to describe that? IMDb change your policy!
