great family fun

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (DVD) I was reluctant to go see this movie with a young houseguest...Jim Carrey is not my favorite actor by a long shot. But I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself laughing and enjoying the implausible story of a man inheriting penguins and raising them in his New York apartment. Perhaps what impressed me the most is that the movie was clean: no bad language, no nudity, no sexual references...in other words, nothing to offend anyone. Oh wait...the penguins learn to 'poo' in the toilet, but that doesn't change my opinion. When the DVD came out, I bought one for the nursing home where my elderly friend lived, and the residents have enjoyed it often. And I bought one for myself to pop in when youngsters drop in....and I laugh along with them every time.

Best movie of the year

Well maybe the best movie, in its class anywho! Jim Carry, once again displays why he's the greatest comedian alive today. Though once in a while he and Jack Black gets off track, with a "none Disney" raunchy flick; he's back o n track with this one. Should be the best comedy of the year.

Mr. Popper's Penguins

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (Amazon Instant Video) Thank you for shipping our "Mr. Popper's Penguins" dvd so quickly! We were pleased with the price and the delivery time, as well. The movie was funny because we're Jim Carrey fans, and as we often enjoy movies about animals, we found the penguins to be completely charming! Some of the scenes used cg images for the penguin tricks (e.g. the dance scene) but most of the movie was actual footage of trained penguins. A great movie for the whole family, we sure appreciated the speedy service in which it was delivered to our doorstep! Thank you!

Funny

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (DVD) What more can be said over all a fair story line; it has some life lessons in it as well as comedy. There was a lot that was unrealistic but all in all the comedy flows well throughout and there are a few life lessons it presents in a fun way that you can learn from. All in all I'd have to rate this as a pretty good movie.

Could have been a greater movie had the Penguins been utilized to their utmost potential

Could have been a greater movie had the Penguins been utilized to their utmost potentialReading Mr. Popper's Penguins to elementary school kids is sure fun than watching the twisted tale in the movie. In the printed story, there was logical sequence of a man and his wife arguing about the obsession of the husband with Antarctica and his luck in getting live Penguins shipped to his home after expressing his fascination with Penguins. In the movie, Mr. Popper was a cold blooded calculating man who lacks passion for animals unless he was forces to do so in order to appease his kids from a broken marriage. The movie spoiled the great story by injecting the distracting business deals with an opinionated and objective business man living in city building surrounded by a forest concrete high-rises and stones roads in all directions. The first scene of over flooded bathroom was too fake to laugh at, and once you start imaging the sliding body under the gigantic water wave, you are being shown a man with dried cloth hanging on the edge of the stairwell with a Penguin turning to move his bowel on the man's face. You quickly get the suspicion of toy penguins positioned to perform man-made jokes rather than letting penguins be penguins. Unfortunately, a great story that would have been a greater success had the moviemaker persevered in perfecting the art of exposing the natural beauty of real penguins and have refrained from the nonsense of entangling the urban ugliness of aloof business people with the natural beauty of exotic animals. So, the children book of the domesticated penguins that made one man's dream come true was turned by the movie into a an adult comedy in poor taste.

Good for the little ones too!

I took my 5 year old to see this as I heard that it was pretty harmless; I am a big Carey fan; and my boy loves penguins! What a perfect trifecta! I thought it was fantastic. The Penguins do steal the show, which my 5 year old loved. Jim Carey was his normal goof ball funny self. Of course...yes...I am a Jim Carey fan, so I like his humor. Great movie. A good ticket to buy for the little ones...harmless fun. Loved it.

My 9yr old LOLed!!!

We were able to see a sneek preview on Tuesday, and I laughed alittle, but my daughter laughed out loud. She loved it. I would not have seen it if it was not free pass. I'm glad we saw it together.

Really Everything Can Be Black and White.

High-class New York businessman Jim Carrey's life gets turned upsidedown when his father passes away and he inherits six penguins. Thetypical would-be poignant and heartfelt situations then take place withCarrey's ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and a comic-book-styled bad guy(zookeeper Clark Gregg) making the biggest impressions within. Anotherfilm of recent memory which really is not sure what it wants to be."Mr. Popper's Penguins" is a gimmick film based on a source (achildren's book) which has limited cinematic potential. Carrey doeswhat he can, but this is beneath his talents (seeming like it has beenlight years since "The Truman Show") and the penguins' cuteness meterdrops steadily with each passing minute. The other performers seem losthere, in particular Angela Lansbury who almost appears to be in thewrong movie all together with a distracting and ultimately unwantedside-story. Plot holes galore, head-scratching outcomes, a confusingtone, and basic film-making shortcomings cage "Mr. Popper's Penguins"in the end. 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Yet the worst Jim Carry movie.

Always liked Jim Carry as an actor. But this movie just bad.Malicious and scatological humor, no real values.Screenwriters made a good job ruining a good idea.

Divorced parents beware (Spoiler Alert)

Overall this was not a bad movie. Carrey was his usual buffonish self. The Penguines were nicely intergrated into the live action - very few times where you consciously thought "That's just CGI". I took my twelve year old daughter to see it and was not happy to be "Parent Trapped" again. I think the should add that as a movie rating, "PT". Translation: movies that show divorced parents who miraculously forget everyting that cuased the divorce and get back together (I know that is revealing a lot but I think people should be warned). Is it any wonder our children cling to the hope that Mommy and Daddy will get back together when Hollywood keeps feeding them movies where that happens?

Pleasing, playful and pleasantly perfect

You must watch the movie to understand the P words used in the header to this review. It was so heartfelt, funny and such a touching story. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end! :) I recommend this movie to all; kids and kids at heart. Such a great plot with great characters! I would watch it again :)

"Mr. Popper's Penguins"

The life of a businessman begins to change after he inherits sixpenguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland, his professional side starts to unravel.Another movie that I wasn't expecting anything but entertainment.Honestly, I only watched this film for one: Jim Carrey! And two: I hada free pass on PPV and this was the only one I haven't seen. When themovie ended, I weeped in sorrow... I don't see why these movies getapproved for release into cinema. The humor was very childish, andbasically relied on either toilet humor or dry humor. With that, I meanthe humor wasn't a bit funny. The penguins farted in people's faces andJim Carrey did his regular thing, except this time it was different. That reminds me, the acting wasn't the worst. Jim Carrey played hisusual self, but somehow didn't hit the mark for me, but DID do a decentjob. The teenage daughter, played by Madeline Carroll (who strangelylooks like Liana Liberato) did a pretty good job, but everybody elsefell short. I must give the film props for it's wonderful CGI. Thepenguins looked actually real at times, but instead they took advantageof this and made them do unrealistic things, which were just stupid...I heard people, beforehand, stating the film was heartwarming and cute, but I found none of this. A family breaks into a zoo, steals theanimals, and takes them to Antarctica. I found this to be mainlytargeted towards little kids, but I must admit I smiled a few timesdaringly. I don't recommend this film at all, unless you have nothingelse to do. I did find entertainment in it, but along the way I wascringing and wincing until the end. Unless you enjoy movies thatproduce this, I recommend seeing something else. 3/10.

Jim Carrey, with penguins in a PG rated movie..what else do you need to know ?

Me and my wife took our 3 kids to this one, we wanted to enjoy a niceSaturday afternoon together watching a cute family flick, and thismovie delivered what we were expecting. our kids laughed and had a lotof fun, and i found myself enjoying most parts of it.Story is very familiar, about a business man " Carrey " who is alwaysbusy and away from his kids, then suddenly he inherits penguins thatchanges him and his life,..i guess you sort of know from here where thestory is headed. a very simple, and might sound silly story, butexecuted in a very good manner, that made it better than your averagefamily movie. Carrey was funny as always, and added a lot to the overall enjoyment of the film.It is a family movie, starring Jim Carrey with penguins and is ratedPG, what really are you expecting ? it is exactly what you would expectfrom this type of film. Just grab your loved ones, head to thetheaters, and enjoy this movie for what it is, don't take it seriously, and you will have a great time !!

PPP pick up a penguin. Half good family film.

Far from ppp perfect this easy, overdone on the sentiment film deliversanother Carey rich performance. The penguins are lovable and cute andthere is just about enough entertainment, and laughs, amidst a cheesystory.Carey plays Mr Popper, a recently separated form his familybusinessman, who excels at property procurement. His father dies andleaves him a posted box of frozen penguins, which Carey looks after andfalls for. His children who come to visit also love the penguins.Carey, whilst caring for the family of penguins, struggles to keep hisjob and acquire the last property in Central Park, New York which wouldmake him a partner in the business he has worked so hard for. Whilstcaring for the penguins Mr Popper learns the true value of family overmaterials and thus completes his journey reuniting his family, andre-homing the penguins. The film also has small roles for stars Angela Lansbury (Murder SheWrote), Phillip Baker Hall, Clark Gregg and Jeffrey Tambor.

A fun film for a change

Ignore the critics' over-analysis. This is what it is supposed to be, entertainment, not a documentary or classic film. Entirely different than the original book, but fun nonetheless.

Pretty good.

The one reason I saw this movies was because it has Jim Carrey. I havenever read the book, but I hear there were quite a few changes made.Jim Carrey (for me) was the best part. He is making is return to hisold comedic roots (I only hope that there is a true sequel to themask.) Some of the penguin humor in the movies was stupid but some wasfunny. In particular I like it when Jim dances with them, and when areon a walk holding a line to stay in a group then a group of kids doingto same thing pass by. As for Jim Carrey's humor there was some goodstuff. He did a Jimmy Stewart impression, ran and talked in slow-mo,referenced a Beatles song. Which brings me to the adult humor. When heis describing the "dream land" to the old lady. He says imagine youself surrounded by tangerines, and a marmalade sky (That's the Beatlesreference.) She replies I don't do drugs. I laughed at that part. alsowhen he holds the penguins over the toilet he says "That's some goods-" he gets cut off by loudy. Over all I enjoyed my self I reallyrecommend this as a family movie. Or if you are a fan of Jim Carrey, still check it out.
