Can someone explain to me why this show is funny AND still on the air?

I like to think of myself as very open and forgiving when it comes tomost things in life, including entertainment. I get why some peoplelike "Rent" and I do not. I get why "MST3K" went on for so long eventhough my wife and I don't like most of the movies (too boring.) theywere making fun of. But what I absolutely DO NOT understand is why onEarth, everyone and their mother "raves" about "New Girl." Now, I'veliked my share of flops, either from fandom (yes....I did like the DareDevil movie....flame now or forever hold your peace.), or because itwas catchy in the beginning.....Kyle XY season 1 was so well writtenand reasonably acted, I watched until the show's demise, and evenpetitioned a return, which seldom works...I know. After the upcoming new show commercials aired to promote newbie shows Ithought....this does not seem funny. I thought "hey...that chick from'Cloverfield' is kind of cute".....lol realizing later it wasn't her.But that's about it. Beyond her cute appearance and mannerisms(reminiscent of Dharma and Greg....which at least had some redeemingmoments), there is nothing good about this show.I watched the pilot.....did not laugh once. Episodes 2 and 3....barelygot smiles from me....and I'm often told I'm the guy who is alwayslaughing at everything, even the unfunny stuff....which is true, I lovecomedy. That makes it even more disturbing....that I'm not laughing andall my friends are. The humor isn't high-brow Dennis Miller/Bill Mahertype of comedy (which I do enjoy). It isn't Beavis and Butthead stupid(which I also enjoy). It's mildly amusing situations. A girl having acrush on an older man....teehee, how cute. Oh and the mother walks into find her wrapped in bras....awww....teehee....how cute. And that'sabout every episode....."awww, how cute...the character grew a little."I saw more character growth in the movie "Tank Girl," which actuallygot a few laughs from me.The friends are a group of people whom you find living together in amillion years. I mean how many guys in their 30's do you know sharing aloft with 3 other guys. They all have decent career paths but somehowcan't afford to live alone. The cast is what Seinfeld would have beenif they had all lived together....the show wouldn't have worked andbeen dumped by the network after a few episodes. Meanwhile, I see showsthat are good getting canceled.....most notably "ManUP"...I've noticedalmost every title Dan Fogler is in either does moderately well or goesbelly up. The sad part about that is, everything he's in is almostalways a riot. The dude has such a comedic presence....whether it's hisdelivery or a quick look. Just looking at him almost provides achuckle. "ManUP" wasn't ground-breaking, or "new" in it's style....butit worked. Character's constantly conflicting, growing, and buildingoff one another while being humorous. These are all the adjectives Icannot use to describe "New Girl." I'm almost afraid it's so popularand liked because a group of people started liking it and now everyonehas to. see American Idol/Survivor/Any "reality" t.v. show.At least "Arrested Development" will be back next year....I do havethat to look forward to.

Good but a bit confusing

I'm not sure if my rating is too optimistic because it could have beenlower but I'm hoping that this show works out so I'll leave it at 7.The show is pretty good in the sense that I was entertained but Ididn't laugh as much as I do when watching TBBT or HIMYM. And to behonest I can't seem to figure out if this TV-show is actually only forwomen which is pretty confusing since I'm a guy. That doesn't mean it'sbad. There are of course funny shows for women (I honestly love SATC). I'm not a big Zooey Deschanel fan which is perhaps why I think "Jess"can be a bit annoying and I would honestly rather learn more about Nickbecause I think his character seems to have more depth. But I would saythat the only thing I find really annoying and terrible about this showis the intro! I hate it! I know it's stupid but it's awful. I usuallydon't have an opinion on the intro but this is just plain bad!All that being said I think it's a good show and I would like to see itsucceed :)

Old Idea

This is a show about a new girl named jess(zooey deschanel) who hasfound her bf sleeping with someone else and moved in with 3 guys. Nowthe thing you must understand about this girl is that they made her outto be a very nice girl but someone who has no idea how to read personalques so basically everything you would think a normal person would doin a situation she does the extreme opposite of.Now having gotten that out of the way time for the review. I watched 5episodes of this show, and not because it was good mind you, but purelybecause I love zooey deschanel as an actress so I figured maybesomewhere in the bounds of this show they might let her act likeherself, sadly that didn't happen. The cast is actually top notch theseguys are really good actors but they simply can't compensate enough forhow terrible they made "jess". The level of atrocity and stupidity thatspews from her lips written by someone who clearly doesn't understandcreative writing as a concept let alone an actual script, is just toomuch to put up with. After this many episodes I can honestly tell you Iwill not be watching this show its just too depressing to take a greatactress and make her act like a complete moron. 5/10 because if itweren't for terrible writing this show would actually be very good.

Loved Dermot Mulroney

For me, the show is a miss and hit. I watch faithfully because I don'twant to miss out on the "hit" episodes. Last night was just that! Ilove Dermot Mulroney and feel like I am missing out because he reallyisn't exposed enough. A couple of hit big screens and some underwhelming Lifetime type movies but no series to let us get a feel forhis true life character. Whoever he is...I know I love him. He is justso appealing as a love interest prospect (for any woman). I would loveto see him stay and string out the hookup with Jess. Let all the guys look up to him and let him continue to be aninspiration to Nick but let Nick stay in the star-struck mode becausethat was actually funny. I really hate Nick's character being such aslacker. Let Nick get off his ass become a successful lawyer andcompete for Zooey's affections but in a non confessional comedic mannerso that Zooey is unable to recognize his undying love. Let Schmidt havepenis envy because Mulroney makes more money, has a better body andattracts Schmidt's love interests without trying. Let Mulroney hireWinston and fail as his mentor because Winston is incapable of gettingpast over thinking situations and have him make comedic businesserrors. Winston's character needs a pick me up because he's not gotthat "funny" going on like the others. This show is almost like watching Dorothy living with the tin man, cowardly lion and the scarecrow...so writers...be careful because afteryou've seen the "Wizard of Oz" about 10 times...It's really hard towatch without shelving it for 5 years.

This show has promise.

Cute show but if Jess doesn't end up with a hot hipster with a haircutlike James McAvoy in Penelope, I'm going to quit watching. I don't knowhow much longer I can buy that this beautiful, intelligent girl isputting up with this house full of douchebags. Zooey Deschanel rocksand has so much to offer as an actress. It's unfortunate that she'sdegrading herself to play along with the TV stereotype that "dorky"people aren't desirable. I still have hope that she's not going to endup with one of her loser roommates. I would really like to see her asthe romantic lead in a film with a co-star that's up to her caliber. Her talent and appeal are being wasted here.

Great new show!

After three episodes I really start to like this show! The pilot wasgood, the second episode was so-so, the third episode was very good! Ihad to laugh out loud all the time (except for one of the guys whenhe's drunk). The characters are all a bit off, especially ZooeyDeschanel's character. It suits her very well! So on the one hand theshow is a bit weird. As if the main characters come from anotherstrange, bright and colorful world. If you like to watch funny weirdanimals in the zoo, you'll like this show as well. On the other hand wehave some very uncanny situations when these characters find themselvescoping with their lives on planet Earth. And some very good jokes too!Hopefully this show will only get better and stays for a couple ofseasons.

Don't waste your time watching this show

I love Zooey Deschanel looks and personality. So I have watched allthree episodes of this show, trying to give Zooey a chance.Zooey plays Jess, and the character is less than shallow, is empty-headed and nothing interesting. What is the fun thing about startsinging at everything? This is a common joke about what is NOT funny. Not the other way round. The only scene fun, up to now, was on the first episode when she dancesnaked. Fun but not enough to make me remember all about. And Schmidt character? Nobody is that flat stupid. Big stupidity comesin layers.A comedy with no fun, a story full of clichés, and characters with nodepths. This show doesn't worth even the time I spent writing thisreview.I wasted my time. You don't need to waste yours.

Disappointing

The pilot was quite interesting and promising. A somewhat strange and original girl moving with three single men, thepotential for fun and entertaining moments seemed endless. Combined toZoe's appeal this looked like a winner.Unfortunately it mostly falls flat. Zoe's dressing like a 10 year-oldgirl is not cute and not appealing. Jake M. Johnson's motto could wellbe "I shout therefore I act". Max Greenfield's acting is better as isLamorne Morris' but they are not helped by mostly flat lines anduninspired screenplay. Hannah Simone brings quite a sexy and glamorouspresence but I feel her character should better be integrated in thestory: it does not seem probable that she loves to spend her time withdorks. All in all the series is a very sub-par friends. I still think it hasthe potential to be good if not great, but it direly needs to bere-tuned.

Maybe Maybe Maybe

Let me start this review off first by saying that I am a huge fan ofZooey Deschanel. Honestly, I'm a fan of the whole Deschanel clanincluding Emily Deschanel in "Bones" and even the mom, Mary JoDeschanel in "Twin Peaks" from the early 90s.The first episode started off pretty great. The concept of the showwhile not original in itself (one girl and several guy friends - "MyBoys," "Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place" etc.) still manages toshow a unique perspective. This girl with her many guy friends, while atypically weird Zooey Deschanel character (she got a show because welove this about her) is oddly quite feminine as are the guys thatsurround her. The initial scenario of the break-up while in the midstof a surprise seduction was hilarious and fresh at least fortelevision. There was a change-up with the cast where the token black roommate("Coach") was replaced with another token black roommate ("Winston").This was done early enough that it didn't phase me all that much whenit happened. The pilot being a great beginning, what I've noticed with the latestepisodes is that Zooey Deschanel ("Jess") doesn't seem to have anycharacter depth. There's no explanation or deeper understanding of whyshe does what she does or is the way she is. I'm not even sure she hasa job. All of her relationships with the current boys, her friend orher ex seem to be superficial and mere affectations of her quirkypersona rather than in anyway real or relatable. The character of "Nick" seems to be sucking all of the character depth. He's obsessed with his ex (ok we've all sort of been there though notto his level) and his behavior is understandable, and relatable. Thisalso gives him a back-story and explanation for his actions. I actuallyam starting to like him more than "Jess" at the moment.I'm putting five out of ten down because I expected more from thisshow. I'm also putting five out of ten down because I am desperatelyhoping that when the show comes back in November that it will add moredepth to Jess and the other guys. What does she do for a living? Washer mom an agoraphobic shut-in? Was her dad a narcissistic workaholicthat wouldn't pay attention unless she sang? How did she meet her modelfriend? Why did her ex cheat on her? Was it because he couldn't takeany more of her quirks? Has this happened to her before? This show has amazing potential. I think to be successful to Zooeyfans, its got to give us more. Here's hoping!

Awesome and Funny

I found this comedy to not only make me laugh but it managed to be attimes very cute but not sickly. The first American sitcom I have seenmanage this balance, it is pleasant and inoffensive. There were times when I couldn't watch because of the cringe factor, which is something that many US sitcoms often lack. OK the lads are notBAFTA winners, but we have to admit that but Zooey is amazing and farfrom steals the show and makes up for the lads and lets face it, she'sthe girl next door. Men want her and women want to be her. There were moments I cried with laughter. Well done for finally makingthis and please hurry up and make a second season.Jinni

un realistic, unoriginal and very try hard

1. The jokes are like they are written by Compute Science majors withno sense of originality. These jokes are 10 years behind when they notfunny then either. It's very painful.2. I understand that the writers are trying to capitalize on the 'Zooeyis eccentric but good looking' thing and the awkward unrealistic comedyroutine that has been done to death and better by 1 million other filmswe had to sit through. By the way, Zooey sounds like drunk pee weeHerman.3. Check this out:Comedy character financial and social status by country:UK - Low income families in small town houses. Realistic lifestyles.Australia - Middle class families in average houses by the beach. Alittle unrealistic adventure lifestyles.USA - Massive apartments or mansions. Every character is beautifulunless they want to roast some unfortunate less attractive person.Chorus lines in public places (zzzzzzz) hooded clean jumpers loungingin 4 million dollar apartments when they have no job. People that havejobs are advertising executives and high power lawyers about to makepartner and all these completely un-realistic demographics to make theaudience envy people that have 'better' more affluent lives. Ego.4. So, basically, a TV series that tries way to hard and I bet getspulled due to its unoriginality and blatant saturation of the egocentric rich kids living in massive downtown apartment stereotypecombined with micromanaged social problems based on the charactersplain stupidity and lack of awareness of what is important in life.I would give it a 0 (zero) but I am not allowed to vote that low. Maybeeven a negative double digit number.

that was horrible

Someone asked me once what I thought of Zooey Deschanel. I said that Ithought she was very pretty but I've never seen her in anything good. Last night we saw the pilot episode of New Girl.So now…I still haven't seen Zooey Deschanel in anything good.Oh, I know she had a part in Bridge to Terabithia, which was just OK,but she more than made up for that in the crushing disappointment thatwas Tin Man.But it's not necessarily their fault when an actor appears in somethingthat stinks, so high ho, let's pour a glass of wine and watch the pilotof New Girl.It was horrible. It wasn't even "let's get used to our parts, we'll bea little uncertain at first but it'll get better over time". It wasjust horrible. It's the kind of zany, over-the-top chewing-the-scenery"humor" that's one excruciating embarrassment after another. It's likea 6th grade class was handed a big budget and a bunch of actors andtold to create a sitcom. I tried watching it with the sound off becauseZooey really is pretty, but it didn't help. I don't expect the show tolast a season.

zombiemozart (2012-05-16 23:45)

Kind of Funny

It is offbeat funny and that is really popular right now. It is chockfull of the pop culture references everyone loves nowadays. Beforewatching it I was afraid that the show would focus all on ZooeyDeschanel's cuteness. It does, but not as much as I thought. Though thehumor does kind of hit a little, it isn't laugh out loud funny. Plus itis only a matter of time that Zooey's character starts a longflirtatious Sam-and-Diane romantic tension with one of the characters. The plot has the old familiar sitcom clichés. She is a cute girl whofinds three men, men who seem very masculine, and turn them into herprotectors. The worst part was that the entire time I spent watchingit, I couldn't help comparing it to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.New Girl is like a watered down version of that show, Couch playing theaggressive Mac, Schmidt as the sociopath ladies man, Jess as the onlyfemale Sweet Dee of course, and Nick as the strange and lonely Charlie, replete with the ex girlfriend he can't get over played by...hey wait aminute...His ex is played by the exact same girl as Charlie's Waitresscharacter! I appreciate the effort, but it will never be as funny asthe full force of It's Always Sunny and I don't think I will be able tohelp myself in comparing the two because of the similarities.

annamariesacay (2012-05-16 10:08)

I have not missed an episode!!

I rate this up to 10 just because I LOVE IT, and I love Zooey eversince... I am quite sad to know that there are very poor reviews forthis show cause most is not true, well at least for my point of view. ILOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT. I don't care if they say Zooey'scharacter needs depth, I think the character has it, in its own way...I'll keep watching this show...forever.This show has given me something to look forward to every weekend (ourtime) and it has not failed me yet. I love all the characters, I likethe idea of Nick being put up with Jess, I also like Schmidt, he'sweird, yeah but it would not have worked if it was written another way.I did miss Wayans cause I already liked him during the pilot, butLamorne is not bad at all.I am no critic, but I love this show, the way it is. The writer has putan effort into it, the cast, everybody in the show, so this reviewserves as my appreciation to their work, well done everyone.. I needmore of the show though..

crknt (2012-05-16 08:15)

Probably one of the funniest series

I think it is a very good show. It's been a while since I laughed thathard. I'd like to address a lot of the other reviews saying that it isnot funny and unrealistic.I feel that people rating this show badly have just been formatted byall the other series and movies. They are expecting a deep story andrealism... I think they may have been mislead by Zooey Deschanelthinking it was going to be a lot more mature. It doesn't differ muchfrom the big bang theory or How I Met your Mother in term of style. Ifanything it is better. But I don't see how you can not appreciate thesecharacters. Saying they are unrealistic is like saying the ocean isfull of water... It's a comedy TV show, not real life. So it's not avalid point in my opinion. You should take it for what it is. They are very caricatured charactersbut it doesn't stop you from getting attached to their uniquepersonality. I hope people don't get discouraged from giving it achance because of the low reviews.

michelle_n_marshall-1 (2012-05-15 23:05)

short and to the point...

Brilliant! The best comedy on TV. Man Up was fantastic too. But sometwinkie decided to cancel Man Up. So... anywho, Zooey and all of thecast are brilliant. The writing is fresh. Its a diamond and I cannotTELL you how annoyed I will be if any of the "genius" execs cancel THISShow. Truly... how do this exec's get this jobs? Mommy or Daddy havesome pull? So lets not have New Girl pulled, huh guys? And by the way,if I were the "genius" exec's at the studio that decided to cancel ManUp, I would do whatever I could to put that show back of the air asap.I have nothing else to say, but apparently I have to write 10 lines orelse... no review! So how is everyone doing? oh, okay i really like theDeschanel girls. Seem pragmatic and down to earth from what I haveread. Best thing? No Drama!

just give it a chance

It's a light hearted, non –serious comedy series that is hit and miss. The more I wanted to enjoy the show the more it seemed to struggle.Throughout the first series there are genuine moments of hilarity thatwill have you wiping the tears from your eyes. Unfortunately these canbecome lost in the banal and bland comedy of some of the other scenes. From episode to episode you will find yourself reassessing youropinions on the show and its characters. Daschannel successfully playsbetween the beauty and the geek in such a natural way we are never surehow to perceive her which also forms the underlying comedic dynamic ofthe show. The other characters that share the screen unfortunately sink belowpar. Damon Wayans Jr's character was a balance between the absurdlyarrogant Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and the pessimistic downer that isMike (Jake M Johnson). But he only features in the opening episode andis soon replaced by Winston (Lamorne Morris) much to our bewilderment.Little in no reference is made to this and Coach is never seen again.Other than very bad test screenings we can only assume that DamonWayans Jr has jumped ship for bigger fish. The show is a similar offering that we have seen strewn out over thelast few years. We have seen 'Awkward' the high school version, 'Cougartown' the mid-life/divorcée version and here we are offered the middleground. Out of school, but not yet near marriage the feel of the showis light and quirky with some random but deliberate references. We areoften dropped lines concerning recent fashion trends (Jeggings, and'deep v's') and even the obscure sexual practices that has made theshow somewhat of an underground success (For your own education you canlook up 'give me the hat' it was certainly new to me) These help keep ayouthful sense to the show and keeps the humor aimed towards thetwenties demographic.

Every Hipster girl's fantasy...

This show is every Hipster girl's fantasy; sharing an apartment with 3thoroughly metro-sexual men who are all willing to shower her withattention whilst all the while being perfectly willing to ignore hereccentricities. And heck, even finding some of them endearing from timeto time.Forgive my cynicism, but New Girl is a show steeped in idealisticnotions and well meaning but badly executed cliché. But in it's defenceI'm willing to bet that I'm far from the intended target audience - aweak defence though if anything but one none the less. This is becausein my mind good writing, plot development and characters shouldtranscend the genre that it finds itself in. People who are notparticularly partial to said genre should still enjoy it on some level- that's a sign of generalised quality.Watched mainly under the pretence that this had Zooey Deschanel in it(or was it Katy Perry?) which I make no qualms about admitting; theshow already had a certain amount of pedigree from the get go. Itwouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Miss Deschanel has made aliving out of playing off kilter, eccentric but cute characters on thebig screen. Something that could perhaps show case these attributes ina more expansive TV format would not have been a bad idea... at leaston paper. However everything is just badly over baked; the characters, the jokes, the set-up's. It's like someone just turned all the dials up to 11 andforgot to turn them back down again. Put another way, it just feelslike it's trying way to hard - strongly encapsulated by the pristineback drops that are used that look like they came straight out of anIkea catalogue. There are some good things now and then however; theodd well delivered one-liner, a cute awkward event or the occasionalgenuinely heart warming moment - but they seem just way to far inbetween. After all said and done though it's not a terrible TV show, just verymiddle of the road. Perhaps they were counting to much on the starpower of Zooey Deschanel to carry them through, a wasted opportunity inmy mind given her ability in past work. Maybe though, in the secondseason (if there is one) some of these problems will be ironed out;which would be nice, because underneath all these issues and 'emotionalbaggage' there's a genuine and interesting girl trying to get out.

Jemimah Reyes (2012-05-13 09:28)

Just awful.

Okay, first off. I like Zooey Deschanel because her personality alwaysseemed to fit perfect in her big screen roles. Such as the Yes Man, 500Days of Summer, and The Happening. She has proved to many people hercapability to take up any role - from the happy go lucky, adventurouswoman in Yes Man, to the demure, alluring, and the kind that is so hardto say no to kind of woman (whatever word fits that description) in 500Days of Summer. Among her films, I loved 500 days of Summer so when Iheard that she has a new show coming up (not a movie but a TV seriesthis time), I was taunted. Curious, is more like it. I wanted to seewhat she was up to this time. So I saw the first episode with mybrother, and from the very beginning when she was seducing herboyfriend, I felt awful. Not because her boyfriend cheated on her, butbecause this thing is obviously beyond Zooey's niche. Comedy isobviously not for her, maybe Music, but definitely not this. Apart fromZooey's character, I think Schmidt delivered the funniest lines, butthat is not to say that they were the newest and freshest ones I'veseen & heard. If you want to have a great laugh, I wouldn't recommendthis one. It just felt bad on so many levels. Now will I waste my timeon another episode? Hell to the frigging no. Maybe in a different lifewhen Zooey's ripped off the show and replaced for good.It deserves 2/10. The one star goes to Schmidt. The other.. well, themusic at the beginning for being catchy. Other than that, its all awaste of tape.

fun, unobtrusive comedy that is an easy watch

The show features the trials and tribulations of 3 male friends and aquirky, recently single female (Zooey Deschannel). Deschannel has beenenjoying growing success and critical acclaim following her part in'500 days of summer' 2009. Her she is perfect as the anchor of theshow, embodying the geek/adorable template exceptionally. And from thepilot onwards we are drawn to her like a moth to the flame. It's a light hearted, non –serious comedy series that is hit and miss. The more I wanted to enjoy the show the more it seemed to struggle.Throughout the first series there are genuine moments of hilarity thatwill have you wiping the tears from your eyes. The ever adorable and sexy Daschannel will have mosthooked to the show be it for her striking blue eyes or her impromptudancing/singing/beat boxing. The show could be a lot tighter and moredepth is needed for the characters but so far as light hearted comedygoes this should do the trick for the new year months.
