This movie did use some cliché techniques and was kind of predictable. However, if you watch it with the idea that you are about to watch acheesy kind of B- movie, then it isn't so bad. I didn't watch it withthe preconception that it was going to be some great, epic movie thatwould win an academy award. It is the equivalent of a bag of Cheetosand Pepsi (not a lot of sophistication, but kind of fun).I would not recommend it for those who believe in the existence ofextraterrestrial life. You can't take this movie to seriously if youwant to enjoy it.In summary, if you like alien movies, and are in the mood for acheesily made film, go rent this movie.
i found the story line as real facts!and wat they show after abduction datz also seen clearly, which no movies show, even the 4th kind the new 2009 movie is not dat gud in comparison to this 1,i would definately give the ratings as no1,still dunno y it wasn't a box office hit.
Wow. I actually just went through the IMDb registration just to leave anote about this movie. Don't watch it! I actually wanted to scratch upthe DVD so someone doesn't feel like I do when they rent the copy Ihave. The characters are (written) so stupid that, like someone elsecommented here, I was totally rooting for the aliens! If peopleactually act like these people acted, I have to move out of Arizona. Ifyou put them all together, they're as dumb as a box of hair.I think the effects would have been better if they had more than a panlight, some dry ice, and a case of silly string (pink and yellow, it'sfor the end). If one girl can get sucked up by light, why do all thealiens follow them around the woods? These guys mastered space flight, right? FYI to filmmaker: blood, not translucent; superglue, not atruncate; and why would they not have first aid, but they have a blockof about 8 knives? Errr!!Had to get it off my chest. If you've seen it, you'll understand; ifyou haven't, don't.
Some angry reviewers are really slamming this movie, but it's not asbad as they rant about. At first, it feels like the acting is mediocreat best - you know, young pretty people taking a back road theyshouldn't be on, and trying to be funny and emotional, that type ofthing. It does keep getting better, though, but still feels like amovie of the week, which somehow makes it better (lower expectations). What keeps it looking low budget is a combination of: the choice ofcamera angles and editing (textbook stuff here, but too plain for athriller), the TV-style slow motion effects and some of the dialogue. It is riddled with horror movie clichés as well (a couple of cleverreveals and jump scares, etc).I was going to pull the rip cord at about 20 minutes, but kept watchingbecause it was late at night. At 30 minutes, I decided that I crossedthe Rubicon and watched the whole thing. You have to watch the lastact! Summary - a low-budget, clean-looking, cliché-ridden, movie-of-the-weekstyle movie, with some good visual effects, which gets better duringthe last half and has an interesting final act.
It's hard to become emotionally involved with characters in a moviewhen they don't even like each other. You have to wonder why a group ofpeople would even take a vacation together when they get along sopoorly. Then when the alien trouble starts you hardly care about most of them.Beyond that you have to get back to an often asked question. Why wouldbeings from a superior planet come all this way to terrorize a bunch oflost tourists. If you are really bored at 2 in the morning and you can't sleep andit's free on TV then maybe. If you have to pay to rent it - save yourmoney.
There is nothing like a pregnant woman to tickle an alien's curiosity. This is the most important thing I'd learned from this movie. And theyperform free abortions."The following events in which ugly bug-eyed aliens harass people forno apparent reason are based on 100% factual reports. Everything thatoccurs in this movie is so incredibly and definitely true that we can'tbegin to explain just how amazingly true it is. What you are about tosee may bore you somewhat, but please stick with us, because we do havesome neat 118-dollar special effects in store for you in the grandfinale, right after the uneventful dull first hour." Oh no, not again. Can't they just admit it's all make-believe hooeylike most other films do? By starting off with these moronic claimsthese movies actually shoot themselves in the foot, making it even moreeasy for me to hate them. Did Spielberg lie to us about "CloseEncounters of the 3rd Kind" being a true story? No. And yet that moviewas great. The pretense is unnecessary.Senator McCain making a casual remark about some "unexplained lights inthe sky in Arizona", is that best you could do, movie? Well, thatproves it! They exist! The biggest problem with anal-probes (or in this movie's case, nasalprobes) isn't that they hurt a lot or that you don't get paid by aliensfor being their unwilling guinea-pig subject. It is the fact that theyare so SHORT. Why do I mean by that? Well, when these daftalien-abduction based-on-"fact" movies are written, there is so littletime dedicated to the actual abductions because of the speed with whicheverything happens with the kidnapped humans. As a result we alwayshave too much padding in these films.Ditto NS. It takes ages for this movie to finally get alien with us.Until that happens, NS takes its sweet time, introducing the dullcharacters in annoyingly pointless detail, making sure we don't missanything  including even every visit to the toilet. You could give mean exam on these people and I would know the answers, all of them, downto the colour of socks they wear. What I would not be able to answer inthis hypothetical quiz though is how the hell a kitchen knife managedto pierce a man's back, the entire 20+ centimeters, in a minor vancollision. I really couldn't. A person's back isn't exactly soft likebutter; you actually do have to utilize some measure ofwell-concentrated force to get a knife to go that deep. (Not that Ispeak from personal experience, shame on those of you who even thoughtof it.)I can certainly see the motives aliens would have for spending years(optimistic estimate) traveling all the way to our Solar System, onlyto engage in a childish game of hide-and-seek with a bunch of moronicyoung people. That makes a lot of sense, as usual. What were theyreally doing here, I wonder sometimes. In the end, Jason Connery, making his dad Sean truly proud by appearingin this UFOnic masterpiece, finds himself wrapped in bundles of cheapcoloured styrofoam. He finds the blond, sees that she has been probed, her fetus aborted, and then SHOOTS her. (Is he a Catholic?) He hadn'tthought of actually SAVING her?"The aliens you have witnessed in the past 90 minutes turned out to allbe members of the Intergalactic Mike Myers Fan Club. They had come toEarth to honour their hero by impersonating him. On this annual clubmeeting the decision had fallen to do a re-enactment of "Halloween IV".Thank you for viewing our fact-based movie, and we hope very much thatyou enjoyed all of our aliens. We'd spent 103 dollars on the effects(we lied in the epilogue, sorry) so we cross our fingers it was worththe money and all our combined effort. None of the scenes that you'vejust witnessed were inspired by any of our 48 viewings of FIRE IN THESKY."On a serious note, the movie REALLY shoots itself in the foot duringthe prologue:"McCain's requests for an official investigation into the PhoenixLights (catchy name) were denied by the military these lights canstill be seen in Arizona's skies". Well, duuuuh. Add 2 and 2 together,Einsteins. Those were and are military test craft of some sort.Duuuuuuh."Senator McCain has seen this movie and said it stinks."
This Movie was realy good. It was missing few things. Not enough to make this Horror slash Sci-Fi not a good movie. The special effects were awsome and they used some of the real shot's of UFO's that took place at that time. Not quite "Fire in the Sky" but maybe the second best thing sence. Give it shot!!!
I have never heard of the phoenix lights until i watched this movie. After watching it, it made me start to think about what the government/military or whoever it is that covers these things up and why they would do this.I believe they made some sort of a deal with the crazy aliens that they can take people from certain areas and not from others and so they stop investigations and whatnot and hope we all forget. If this is true, and i believe it is , they might have made this deal with them to save the rest of us from these experiments.Maybe im just crazy,i dont know. There is a website www. lightsoverphoenix. com/home.html that you might find interesting, especially whats in THE BOX!!The movie was well done with some creepy parts.Good acting, the only part i didnt care for was the ending. He should have used the bullet on something else!Enjoy
"Night Skies" is equally divided between a chatty, boring, first half, and a somewhat intriguing second half. The low budget is not thatobvious as some of the effects are pretty good. The characterdevelopment in the first half is strained, and the acting well belowaverage. The second half is more forgiving since screaming and runningthrough the woods is less challenging than trying to remember lines.Nevertheless, when you have nothing more than someone's repressedmemories for a script, the finale is acceptable. I didn't hate it, butthis film is far inferior to another low budget sci-fi "Night Feeders",which is award material compared to "Night Skies" - MERK
The story is a bit repetitive, we all have seen alien's movies withplastic monsters and a group of friends whose car breaks in the middleof the nothing... This one isn't different (although it's based on thetestimony of lots of witnesses who assure to have seen UFO's).I think the movie is a cliché of all the first ET's movies but I haveto admit that in some moments I was tense and the cameraman did anexcellent job... It's a shame that the ending of the movie was sodisappointing, but the real thing is we'll never know if the Phoenixlights they swear to have seen where actually aliens... Other alienmovie to watch at midnight.
A guy, who looks like a young version of Brad Pitt is driving across Arizona at night and is not on I-40. He was 3 great looking babes with him as well as another dude. They see lights in the sky, crash into another guy's truck. People get killed and abducted. Once abducted we go through the classic womb images normally associated with regression memory plus tall grays (one of 5 alien types for you UFOs people.) Mild violence, cleavage, and language. Not at all believable. Based on actual events? Oh Please!
This is an excellent 'B' movie. I liked it better than 'Fire In the Sky'. Decent acting. Scary and lots of fun.
Just watched this film and reckon that its a straight to video release, the acting at times is wooden but the storyline is not that bad so itswatchable.***SPOILER***I'm not sure if this a real true story or not (Im going to check upafter writing this) but using the '97 sightings as the backdrop for thefilm was a good idea and the film plodded along bearable, until almostup to the end where it gets a little obscure, especially with thespaghetti and cheese gunk thats all over them when captured! And thenit goes for the cliché cheep horror shock ending when the guy thoughtto be dead jumps up.OK to watch when bored I suppose, when it comes onto TV and there'snothing else on, especially if your a UFO buff.
_Night Skies_ was a decent enough science fiction film, though I agree with the reviewer Wayne Beckham that the movie is really more horror than science fiction. The movie claimed that it is based on true events, one event pretty well documented, the other news to me. The documented one was the March 13, 1997 sighting and filming of unidentified lights in the Arizona night sky by thousands of people, a sighting still debated by some to this day. I liked the incorporation of this event into the movie, both the use of actual footage from the sighting and the movie's well done special effects depiction of the lights as seen by the characters in the film. I also liked - and was surprised - by the inclusion in the first few moments of the movie of Senator John McCain being asked in a press conference about the lights, that was well done (and unlike the trickery used to include President Bill Clinton in the movie _Contact_, was using footage directly related to what the movie was about). The other event, not something I had heard about previously, was the story of a Gulf War veteran, stranded on a backroad in very rural Arizona and the five people in a RV who ran into him. Both vehicles disabled, the soldier and the people in the RV (a married couple, a couple that was engaged, and the sister to one of the men) at first mostly bicker about whose fault it is, try to save the life of the one of the men in the RV who was severely injured in the crash of the RV, and try to get the vehicle repaired to get him to the hospital. Soon however it becomes clear that there is something in the woods, something sinister, one that can play tricks with their minds, make them see things that aren't there, and one by one try to pick off and abduct the various members of this thrown-together group. The feeling of the film - the briefly glimpsed aliens, people and things suddenly appearing behind people, the rustling in the brush, the screaming, the running, and yes some of the blood - had more in common with a horror movie than a typical science fiction movie (not that that is a bad thing). The alien's motivations were sinister, to abduct the humans (causing maximum terror while doing it, naturally) and them probe them horrifically in their spaceship (which was suitable creepy and organic and gooey in make-up). Not a bad film I guess, I would rate is as good as some of the best of the much improved Sci Fi Saturday night movies of the week. The alien make up was pretty well done, the lights in the sky were very eerie, and I will admit it, one of the girls, the sister, was very good-looking (Ashley Peldon was the actress's name, playing the character Molly). While her character was not particularly deep she was not unpleasant to look at. Overall though the acting was adequate, nothing spectacular though not awful either. I didn't like the way the opening credits were done, a diced-up montage in almost slow motion of a horror scene from later in the movie, it made the film feel to me at least cheaper and more poorly done than it really was. Production values were not bad and if alien abduction movies are your thing (or the _X-Files_) I would say give it a look.
This STORY had potential, but was ruined by bad writing and worseacting. It had one redeeming quality....the movie begins with USSenator John McCain expressing his interest in UFOs. The time I wastedon the movie was well worth that little tidbit of information about apotential Presidential candidate!! Thank you Director Roy Knyrim forthat little heads-up! So, here we go -- group of 30 something actors, playing young people on their way to Vegas by way of a back road. Afterbashing into some guy who is working on his truck, chaos ensues. Soonthey are under attack by aliens (which were not half-bad looking, asaliens go).The special affects were great, but so overshadowed by theterrible script and bad acting.
I don't know if this is actually supposed to be true (like "Fire in theSky"), or the "true" part is just for dramatic purposes. Either way, itplays out mostly like a horror movie. You start with a group ofshallow, mostly attractive young people. They manage to wreck their RVin a deserted place, running into Jason Connery (who does an impressivejob of acting and looking like a rural American). It's actually an okay movie until the ending. When it really turns intoa bad-ish horror movie more than anything else. It's not so much eventhe clichéd nature of it, but the fact that it is so rushed. Much ofthe movie is simply the various characters talking, then boom, all theaction seems to happen at once (in the final 20 minutes of the film). No suspense or anything, really, once it starts. The special effects are surprisingly good for what presumably was avery low budget movie. The blood actually looks like blood, not syrup. The aliens are generally never clearly seen which helps, but when theyare, they don't necessarily look like guys in suits. While watching the film though, I was really struck by how silly thealiens were acting. (This is perhaps because it is a "true" story, famed UFOlogist Jaques Vallee argues that UFOs are not aliens fromanother planet, because they seem to act so stupid.) Anyway, probablynot worth getting unless you are a Jason Connery fan. I really don'tthink it works that well as a horror movie because of the rushedending. And I don't think UFO fans will be too impressed either, because nothing is really new in it. It's basically like a moregruesome "Fire in the Sky".
I think if you are a fan of sci-fi or are interested in the UFO subjectyou will hands down find this an entertaining film. You are on the edgeof your seat the entire time, it is very scary. That was what it wastrying to do, be a thrilling film, and I think it got that down verywell. Also the actors were not required to do much but I think for thebudget and the 'level' of the actors, the acting was more than averageand fit the film perfectly. IF you do not like sci-fi, you probablywont like this film ,but if you don't mind it, even if you are not asci-fi or UFO fan, i think you can enjoy this scary and somewhatthoughtful film. The special effects were very good too, I don't thinkanything looked fake or cheesy at all. 8/10
This movie sounded really intriguing to me. I love UFO movies, Iespecially love UFO documentaries and this had a documentary-ish plot,so I had high expectations before watching it.I was disappointed.I mean, I was reeeeally disappointed! Everything about this movie ishorrible. The acting is beyond pathetic, the story is so unbelievableyou have to wonder if this in fact is based upon a true story orwhether it's just a gimmick to make more money, the textbookhorror-tricks are all being used, everything is as predictable as itcan get, the characters are SO STUPID I sat there hoping they would alldie so the movie could finish.Do yourself a favor and don't rent this movie, and more importantly, don't even think about buying it. I'd rather spend $20 buying an emptyDVD.
Movie built up a lot of tension and executed to a great ending. I amtaking two Valium tonight because i know i will have a nightmare. Itmay be a lower budget feature, but using an actual event that happenedmade it pretty believable. The aliens and the special effects were topnotch and the use of gore helped out a lot I wish i had a budget to beable to shoot the same type of movie. the only thing i was upset about,i watched d it on pay preview and it wasn't in letter box format. Iprefer to be able to see the whole movie and not just the middle. Thecamera angles were great, they weren't extreme in nature and there wasgood pacing between shots. Had god audio and the music really added toto the tension. Good Work
The only thing good about this movie was that it was not following arecipe plot, so you never sort of knew what was going to happen next. However, the bad thing is that the director and the screenwriter andthe actors also seemed oblivious to what was supposed to happen. Inthese circumstances it is hard to identify with any of the characters, making the whole point of the film moot.Bad acting, bad directing, low budget, silly rubbery monsters and so onand so on. Michael Dorn appears in a few seconds at the end and no, notas Worf, but as a policeman.Bottom line: stay away from it. Whoever says good things about thismovie must have money in it.
