I was very sketchy walking into this movie. I didn't know what toexpect, it's Disney which is promising, but it's also Disney's firstCGI Disney movie that got a PG rating, so it seemed different. It waspretty hard for me to choose between 'Tangled' or 'Burlesque' but I'mglad I made the decision to watch 'Tangled'. This film has everything, for everyone, boys girls and tongue in cheekhumor for adults. It's Disney's answer to Shrek, but in a classy way, that doesn't feed off of pop culture. The story of the film is simple. Rapunzel is a princess that has hairthat has power to heal and keep people young, but once it's cut, itloses all power. When Rapunzel was just an infant she was kidnapped byan old woman who locked her away in a tower to keep her hair all toherself. Rapunzel grows up thinking that her kidnapper is in fact hermother, and the reason she's locked away is because her 'mother' wantsto keep her safe from the hardships of the world. I'd tell you moreabout the movie but I don't want to ruin it. Let's just say she runsaway. Very simple, fairy tale plot.I was kind of saddened that Disney has succumbed to making Princessmovies using CGI, but watching this movie I realize that some sceneswouldn't have the power it had, if it were in 2D. The lantern lightingscene, for example, was amazing. It wouldn't have been the same in 2D.The music, was perfect. Enough musical number to keep Disney fans morethan satisfied and not enough to where it's overkill. The songs wereheartfelt and meaningful, they all served a purpose, it wasn't just anameless song thrown into the movie. The voice acting, by Mandy Mooreand Zachary Levi were amazing. I was a little sketchy about Mandy. I'ma long time fan, but I wasn't sure if she had the right voice to be aDisney Princess. She gave Rapunzel so much life, and innocence, Icouldn't think of any other actress who could play her better. Zacharygave Flynn life, and humor, and made him a very likable character. However, the two characters that stole the show were Pascal, thechameleon, and Maximus, the horse. Although these supporting charactershave no speaking lines, through actions and emotions, you know exactlywhat they want to say, and the message comes in loud and clear. This movie has enough action and comedy to keep boys happy and enoughemotion, romance and drama to keep the girls happy. There are a fewscenes that made me tear a little, well maybe more than a little. Somescenes have so much emotion and depth that it tugs at yourheartstrings, and gives you goosebumps, especially the lantern scenes.Disney is testing the waters of their film making with this one. Therewere many alcohol references and even references about being drunk. There's violence, people getting stabbed, and yes, even blood. Whichyou never see is Disney movies. Overall, I highly recommend this movie, to everyone. Anyone could enjoythis movie. It's very hard not to like it. With theater prices so high,I suggest you don't spend 10 dollars to watch Cher and Christina, butwatch 'Tangled' instead. They don't make movies like this anymore. It'smuch better than last year's 'Princess and the Frog'. Rapunzel is nowin the line-up of classic Disney princess. I cannot stress how amazingthis film is. Go out and see it.
For 2010, Tangled is on top of my list of broadly entertaining movies that should please most people. Tangled is clever and enchanting, with animated characters who have heart and soul.
This review is from: Tangled (DVD) I will admit that I am a Disney sap, but Tangled is perhaps the best movie of 2010, or even this millenium. The characters are great, well developed, and fun. The art is beautiful. The story is a twist on the classic that everyone knows so well. And then it happens. Mid movie. You'll know it when you see it. That piece of Disney Magic that you know no other creators could make. That scene that was written just to touch your heart. Your eyes light up, you might get a little teary even though it isn't sad... It's just magic.Tangled is fantastic. I preordered it. I saw it in theatres 8 times. I bought the soundtrack. I don't do that with movies that aren't amazing. In fact... I've never done that before in my life.Buy this movie. It doesn't matter if you're one or 100, you'll love it.
Taking place in a land far, far away, Tangled tells us about an evilwitch named Gothel. By consuming a special flower, she was able to liveforever. One day, the queen who ruled that land couldn't give birth, soshe needed a special flower in order to have a baby. The king orderedhis servants to trace the location of the flower, and gave it to hiswife. In short, the baby was successfully born, but Gothel got angryand decided to take revenge, so she kidnapped the baby, aiming for hermagic hair which she could use for eternal life. Rapunzel, the baby, grew up with her fake mother's (Gothel) lies, telling her that outsidethe tower was full of dangerous things. There was a handsome thief whomanaged to steal the Princess' tiara. He hid in Rapunzel's tower andthen they met for the very first time. Mother Gothel tried to separatethem but she failed. And the two of them finally saw the floatinglantern, which was her biggest dream ever.Rapunzel is in an active yet wishy-washy girl, but she has a goodheart. The thief, Flynn, is a handsome, playboy, and attractive guy.Mother Gothel is an antagonist. She loves Rapunzel, but is too obsessedwith her hair.At first Rapunzel and Flynn didn't a smooth conversation and theydidn't trust each other. As time went by, they fell in love. Theconversations encourage for the viewers to support their dreams. The moral of this story is if we a have a dream, we have to make aneffort and attempt to achieve it and never give up.Despite knowing the fact that it's a movie with an happy ending, westill watched it and we enjoyed it because of the excellent animation, good songs, and last but not least, because of Rapunzel herself is veryentertaining; the long hair itself attracts us.
How many different ways can the story of Rapunzel be told? This moviewas AMAZING! I am a dad (in my late 40's), and have been to my share ofDisney movies, this was phenomenal! The story, the animation, themusic, the characters, the beauty, the comedy, the emotion, etc. wereall first rate. Disney really hit the ball out of the park with thismovie. This will be an amazing Broadway Show!! If you love Disney, andmusicals, this movie is for you. It was the best $8.00 popcorn I everbought, that's how great this movie was! You will not be disappointed.I do not want to tell you about the movie, but Mandy Moore does a greatjob. All the voice over artists were incredible. All the characterswere unique, and the bar seen is a riot.
This one's strictly for the youngsters, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a very well-made kid's film.
This review is from: Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I had lost interest in Disney animated features somewhere between The Lion King and... can anyone really remember? As Disney moved towards 3D animation I must admit with exception of WALL-E there hasn't been a story that really defined what Disney is famous for: taking an already original (classic) story and adding the Disney twist. Tangled is the rebirth of this definition and more. I am looking forward to watching this again once the DVD is out. It's great for family and surprising enough I have found that even guys found it entertaining despite not being into fairy tales.
A few years ago the technical wizardry of SHREK trumped the superiorstory telling of MONSTERS, INC. at the Oscars, and this may be one ofthose years. Early buzz has the wistful mixed bag TOY STORY 3 with alock with Oscar voters who long for their lost childhood despite themonstrous children they show in that film, but the FAR more enjoyableexperience, while still not without flaws of pacing, is Disney'sdeliriously enjoyable semi-musical (wonderful even if surprisinglyunobtrusive score by Alan Menken) rethinking of the old Rapunzellegend, TANGLED.The funny and yes, actually sexy animated leading man and his innocentbut capable leading lady anchor a near perfect animated cast. Thecavalry horse Maximus who starts as the hero's chief nemesis and windsup his best ally is a brilliant comic creation nearly matched byRapunzel's faux "mother," a 21st century version of the classic wickedwitch. While some of the most popular recent animated features havegenerated major and minor sequels, this is the first animated film inmy experience where I'd love to see these animated characters AS DRAWNand VOICED reused in other, not necessarily related properties as ifthey were real actors. They're so much fun to spend time with, you wantto spend more. If Disney had the good sense to try an animated versionof George Bernard Shaw's perennial success ARMS AND THE MAN with thesame animated cast they've already developed, I'd be willing to bet itwould be just as big a hit.Great cast, but also a great story told with amazing freshness andinsouciance. By elaborating on the well known story of the maid in thetower to create a classic quest to center their refurbished storyaround, the film makers also opened the door to a dazzling array offresh comic touches (I'm with Flynn - "I gotta get me one of these!" -in loving the possibilities of the rediscovered old kitchen and comicstandby, the cast iron skillet) and amusingly twisted sub-characters(yes, even one momentarily covered with the comic rodents that havebeen a Disney good luck talisman for years) with "dreams" similar tobut different from Rapunzel's and thus touched on something universalin all of us. We all have dreams that seem unrealistic, but withdetermination and faith may not be. TANGLED has its heart firmly in theright place as pure entertainment so that it's only afterward that werealize how strongly it was encouraging us in the audience to followour own dreams, but the joy and the beauty that washes over us whilewatching it remains with us to inspire long after the credits (which, sad to relate, are the one unimaginatively filmed part of the movie andeasily missed) roll.Of course the more and more ubiquitous new 3D system works beautifullyand makes the motion picture experience more than it will inevitably beon the small screen, but the story telling is so good, that when theDVD inevitably comes out, it is one which will have to be on my shelvesfor regular reviewing whether or not we have 3D technology on our homescreens yet. When the "previews" are as good as TANGLED's, you usually think theymust have pulled ALL the best parts, but this is one case where a filmlives up to it's hype. It really is one of the few "must sees" of apretty good year at the movies. (Sadly, as of January 25, 2011, itappears my prognostication re. TOY STORY 3 was prescient: the Academychose to only nominate THREE animated films - including the inferior"How To Train Your Dragon" as "Best..." - in the apparent fear thatTANGLED might actually beat TOY STORY 3 as it has at the box office.Inexcusable.)
For the first time in a while, it looks like Disney's cracked the formula without needing to rely on Pixar to figure out the equations.
While this film has all the strengths of the classic Disney films ofthe 90's, the songs range from decent to mediocre, and some of the keyplot twists appear forced. The movie's charm comes from the comedicmoments, most of which are derived from the character's facialexpressions and gestures. The love theme is really the only memorablepiece of music in the whole film, while other efforts like "Mommy KnowsBest" tend to fall flat. The animation, voice acting and singing areall top quality, but the film's plot weaknesses and uneven scoreprevent it from being placed in the same class as "Beauty and theBeast", "Aladdin" and "The Lion King".
Vibrant, funny, and oh so sweet, Tangled is rousing family entertainment which belongs in the top tier of Disney's illustrious pantheon of classics.
This review is from: Tangled (Four-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I have nothing bad to say about Tangled, the movie. It's excellent. Don't take my 1 star review meaning that the movie is bad because it isn't--it's totally cute and worth watching. But don't purchase this combo pack if you think you can watch the 3D version on a regular television. The 3D version is ONLY viewable with a 3D TV coupled with a 3D Blu-Ray Player. It does not come with glasses to watch on a regular HD TV. I think this pack should come with a warning about this. Yes, there is a regular Blu-Ray, regular DVD, and a digital copy included, so a person can definitely watch the movie. Just not in 3D
I have to admit that I've become jaded and cynical when it comes to Disney and their ridiculous amount of merchandising which includes a TV show or a movie, and not the other way around, i.e., a movie or TV show that includes some merchandise. This was my attitude towards "Tangled".Also, the trailer looked cute, but would the movie really be more than just fluff? On the other hand, did the trailer truly reflect the feel of the movie? Take, for instance "UP" which was portrayed as a light-hearted and funny film in the trailers, and not the slightly scary and slightly dark film with mean pack dogs and a villain trying to kill a cute, small kid. But, as the mother of a 7 year old girl who was dying to see it, I gave in, and we saw it. And, I'm happy to say. I loved it, and so did my 7 year old and my 12 year old girl. It was charming and funny and had just the right variety of characters - light and dark - to make it interesting without being too scary, as well as, just the right amount of action versus mushy scenes to make it enjoyable, not too fast moving to be impossible to keep up with, and not so slow to wonder when it would end. We loved the songs, the silliness, Rapunzel, Flynn, the king's horse out to get them both, Rapunzel's strength and building realization of who she was. Also, there were no adult-humor hidden inuendos (like in Shrek and other not-G-rated movies that really are not for kids). We loved it. It would be hard to beat the magic of The Little Mermaid, which was hard to beat till Beauty and the Beast came along. I'm not sure Tangled beats either of those movies, but it comes close!"Skillets! Who knew, right?!"
This review is from: Tangled (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Overall, this film fit very well amongst the other Disney Princess films. While the beginning was a bit slow and the singing felt a little unnatural and out-of-place, the tearjerking moments and comedic timing allow this film to stand up with the rest of Disney's greatest.
I took my two boys to see this, the older of which was kind of irked atbeing dragged to a 'princess' movie but I'm happy to report we allenjoyed it. The only reason I'm really writing a review (since itsgetting enough positive reviews to really cover most of what I likedabout it) is to say that there IS a reason to see it besides the 3Deffects.I am not a huge fan of 3D films, in fact, it is rare that I don't findit to be a distraction. Frankly I don't WANT to be tricked intobelieving I'm actually *in* the film unless I'm at an amusement park, perhaps. I like my distance from the goings-on within the picture. We saw this without 3D and the breathtaking scenery was more thanenough to feed the senses on its own. Don't feel like you need to shellout the extra 8 bucks for 3D (the upgrade in cost per matinée ticket inmy neck of the woods) because its perfectly enjoyable without it. All that being said, it doesn't have quite the clout or likability ofthe very best Disney when it comes to the songs and pacing, but I wouldstill give this picture a low A, recommend it for family viewing andsee it again with a friend if they wanted to. This was far and awaybetter than the Frog Princess, a film which I found terrified myyoungest child and bored my older one.
Just got back from a 3D showing of Tangled with 2 10 year old girls. The movie was GREAT! One of the more enjoyable kids films I have seen -it REALLY works for adults as much as kids..and not just girls either. The animation was top notch and VERY effective use of 3D. Much betterthan Toy Story. The 3D definitely enhanced the film, and there weresome scenes that we actually reached out our hands to try to grabsomething! A first for us! The story seemed a little 'meatier' andmature than some of the other Disney films, while retaining the formula'spunky girl goes after her dream and nobody is going to stop her.' Ireally don't want to talk about the plot because I thought it was verywell laid out, with a TERRIFIC villainess, and a smart alec-tho-you'll-learn-to-love-him guy and a really likable girl. But it s avery clever take on the Rapunzel story.I was never bored.. I laughed (the humor is REALLY good - so slapstick, but some refreshingly subtle humor too). and yes, I cried (won't tellyou why). This may be the most enjoyable Disney film I have seen in a LONG time. There were only 2 things I wished they did differently.1) The songs. They were 'okay' and served the film well, but nothingreally stood out. I left the theater and couldn't remember one song.Nothing like "under the sea" or "circle of life" from the earlier filmsthat stay with you after the credits have long gone by.2) speaking of credits, these were the lamest closing credits I think Ihave ever seen in a big budget film. There was nothing to keep ourinterest (and the closing credits were LONG).. No animation.. noclips.. no outtakes.. no surprise scene at the end, etc. Just textscroll. Of course, most people don't include closing credits in theirreview, but I have seen so many clever credits (remember LemonySnicket's closing credits?) that after such a cleverly done film, justseeing plain text scroll for 5 minutes was disappointing.. Of course,we were the only ones left in the theater watching the credits so thismay mean nothing to most people...Highly recommended for the entire family.9 out of 10.
I am a Disney fanatic having interned there in college, lived in Orlando and now taken my 7 year old daughter there on two occassions. Today we went to see Tangled with our extended family. There were 10 of us in all with 6 children ranging in ages from 2 - 8. We were all BLOWN AWAY with the quality of this movie. It was funny, intense, clever, deep and kept all of us thoroughly entertained. On our ride home we all agreed if this is not the best Disney film we have ever seen (which I believe it is) - then it is easily one of the best. Can't wait to see it again. I've never logged on to write a review before but because of the quality and depth of this movie, I really wanted to share and tell everyone to go see it. The songs sound like something right out of a broadway hit - and it's pretty easy to see this classic making it's way to Broadway someday - when and if it does - I will be there. Thank you Disney for a making a great, great movie that had it all. We will have this Thanksgiving memory for a lifetime.
"Tangled" is Disney's latest film, but unusually it is not a highlyhyped as previous Disney films, at least where I live. I did not reallylike the nondescript generic title, which does not say anything muchabout the movie at all or even hint at its creator, Disney. Upon watching the movie, we see a spin on the fairy tale of Rapunzel.Rapunzel becomes a princess here, in the Disney tradition. The maleprotagonist is played by a charming (again in the Disney tradition)outlaw Flynn Ryder. The elements of the Rapunzel story are all there:the long hair, the locking up in the tower, the teardrop at the end...But Disney gives these things a very interesting magical back story(again in true Disney form). To make the boys come and see the movie, they include an exciting and funny action story with Flynn Rydercharacter, complete with thugs and chases.I personally like the non-speaking animal characters a lot -- the cutelittle chameleon Pascal and the mighty royal steed Maximus. I never didlike those other noisy annoying sidekicks in previous films too much. The songs are not too memorable unfortunately. They tend to sound alikealready, don't they? The action can tend to be a little graphic here, meaning there are lacerations and stabbing with blood, and you actuallysee what happens to the witch when she falls out of the tower --unprecedented stuff. It is in fact the first Disney princess film toget a PG rating. It is a marked improvement over "Princess and the Frog", Disney's lastfilm. It is not to the level of "Beauty and the Beast", "LittleMermaid" and "Mulan", but "Tangled" is a landmark film in Disneyhistory, as they finally enter into 3D CG animation territory. Theeffect of this animation vastly improves the quality of action scenes(like the breaking of the dam) and the magical effect of the poignantscenes (like the floating paper lanterns). This film is well worth itsprice of admission. It is fun, funny, exciting, romantic and touching, everything you will be looking for in a Disney animated feature film.
This is a testament to the power of 3D when mastered--and not rushed. "Tangled" is animation at its best and it's this season's biggest surprise--it treats its audience with intelligence while giving them a jolt of fun.
When "The Princess and The Frog" came out, we rejoiced because oldfashioned animation, a strong storyline, a different yet strongheroine, and some very funny moments had all worked well to give us anew classic. It was indeed a very good movie, with marvelous musicnumbers and gorgeous animation. This year, the animation, with the help of more sophisticatedcomputers, has achieved new heights, creating a softer, more naturallook, to resemble old fashioned artwork. The problem is that the otherelements are not up to the technical standards. We have rather blandvocal entries in most of the leading performances, and both the musicand the storyline could have been much better. As it is the case in most of the films we see nowadays there is strongemphasis on coming up with "potentially good ideas", yet theirdevelopment somehow comes short. Here our heroine's dreams, which wesympathize with, draw us into her world, and we can't help but admirethe simple but strong young woman who tries to break herself free fromthe only world she knows. To get there, she is assisted by a dashingyoung man, who must learn to grow up as well. While as the heroines of recent animated stories, all have assertiveand independent personalities, mostly based on their embracingknowledge through books ("Beauty and The Beast"), poor bravado andcuriosity ("The Little Mermaid"), or the aspiring chef of "The Princessand The Frog". Those characters mesmerized us, with the help of clever, intelligent lyrics, and hummable melodies. "Tangled" can't compete ineither department, as the very simplistic, underdeveloped charactersare poorly served by the pedestrian lyrics. There are a couple of magic moments in the film, but even those feelforced, as part of a design, not of a fully realized work. Nothing herecan match the anxiety and sadness of the furnace scene in "Toy Story",the wonder of the birth of love in "Beauty and The Beast" or witnessingmortality in "Up". Animation has grown so much recently; it's hard tofeel satisfied by efforts like this film.
