The TV I do all of my film watching on now is fifty inches. I have my eye on the possibility of upgrading that to a sixty-five inch set in the semi-distant future.Digital copies are provided only in 720 by 576 (at best), and they look like garbage on my 13.4-inch MacBook. So how much use do you believe a DVD is going to get in my house? If you guessed anything other than "to stub cigarettes out on", "to test if the microwave is still working", or "as a one-use frisbee", you are wrong. Not just wrong on the level of believing MP3 sounds anywhere near as good as an uncompressed CD, but wrong like you have invested your retirement in a European bank.So once again, let me congratulate the SD-pusher studios on turning what should have been another guaranteed sale to me into an annoyed search elsewhere. Stop playing favourites with DVD buyers for crying out loud. DVD died the day that the electronics companies wised up and realised that televisions need to be made progressive.
This is the ultimate guy movie. It has all the big action superstars in it and they all deliver an amazing action movie. Stallone has shown that he really knows how to direct a good action movie and this is definitely the best. There's no love scenes, there's no comic releif, there's just face pounding action from start to finish. I don't know how anybody could ever possibly watch this movie expecting anything but in your face violence and action. Those people will be disappointed if they exist (which by some of these reviews dissing the plot and story they obviously did manage to expect this to be some kind of not-action movie). These are probably people who went to see Titanic expecting loads of action and gore. I don't know how anyone could see the poster for this movie and expect it to be some kind of shakespearean masterpiece with no violence and dramatic, tear-jerking love scenes, but apparently those geniuses exist, and they're giving this movie bad reviews. Anyone who likes action movies, will be pleased with the amount of action in this movie. Action-packed I believe is the correct term to use here. There is enough testosterone in this movie to kill a bull.
I am a really big 80's-90's action movie fan! One of the only onesaround of my age! I think bringing up a movie like this is great tore-live those great times, which I greatly miss and I'm sure all thefans miss!! These actors changed the movie industry for ever and theydeserve a big congratulations for that. I rated this movie a 9/10, butas I state in the summary, it could have easily been a 10/10. One ofthe biggest let down of the movie, in my opinion, was Steven Seagal notjoining the cast! I know Stallone invited him and he refused, due toproblems he had in the past with Producer Avi Lerner, but I must say ifSeagal was part of the cast, this movie will get an easy 10/10! Anotherthing I disliked was Schwarzenegger's attitude! I understand he's now apolitician and a politician's work is not a joke (not that I'mconsidering the movie industry a joke, but less serious), but I thinkSchwarzenegger should have appeared more in the movie, as he was upthere with the best in the 80's-90's and we all miss him!! Van Damme'sabsence didn't really affect the movie, in my opinion, as I have neverbeen a big fan, although I do recognise he was a big star of the time.Other than that, I think Stallone deserves a big applause, for doingwhat we were all waiting for and that was to relive the 80's-90's era, just one more time!! Congratulations Stallone and to all involved!!!
Expendables isn't a movie, it's a film. It's the product of artistslike Mickey Rourke and actor/director Sylvester Stallone. No doubt Stallone's acting/directing benefited from the presence ofMickey Rourke, as did the performances of supporting cast members likeJet Li, a family man, and Dolph Lundgren, a drug addict. There werealso many minor characters in this movie that gave great performances, including Giselle Itié as the general's daughter.Sadly, Jason Statham's role didn't seem any different from his othermovies. This "film" was a rare treat for me. I don't see a lot of 'indie'movies. I guess most big movies these days are the product ofmarketing. But this movie is the product of life experience. The film takes place in a banana republic in South America. MostAmerican movies just can't compare with the realism, the experiences oflife and death, that are experienced by people in these developingcountries.
I'm a big fan of those corny action films with Steven Seagal, Van Damme, and Jackie Chan. Yes, when those moves are on SPIKE TV, I'm the glutton that hogs the remote and refuses to switch the channel, no matter how bad the acting. The story lines hold my attention, and a house filled with boys over rules any kleenex carrying drama. I had hoped to find the same action and adventure in The Expendables. My expectations were high, considering all my old favorites were involved in the making of this all-star film.Perhaps it was nostalgia that drew me more than the promised dynamite, gun play, and rolling high kicks. I remember Sylvester Stallone when he was king of the ring, Dolph Lundgren was the epitome of the perfect He-Man as he fought for the rights of the universe, Stone Cold Steve Austin dominated the WWE, Eric Roberts played the perfect bad guy in that western world that existed between Heaven and Hell, Schwarzenegger was the cyborg that you wanted on your side, Mickey Rourke could spout wisdom that could make a grown man cry, and Willis would risk life and limb to save his soon-to-be ex-wife. This movie offered all-- old-time favorites, accompanied by the new and fresh faces of Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Jet Li, and Randy Couture. Honestly, wait for the movie to come to SPIKE TV for free. Don't get me wrong...there was plenty of action, dynamite, a story line that had potential, and blazing weapons. Statham was stellar, Li was his amazing self, and Couture can take a beating unlike anything I've ever seen. Though, despite all the action, I felt there was something lacking. Perhaps its the fact the action was a bit unbelievable. Honestly, there's only so many high kicks and head bangs a person can take once they reach AARP certification. These darlings of the 1980s and 90s are getting more than a tad up in years. The movie reminded me more of the guys, sitting around that bonfire in the desert, reminiscing about all those fantastic ass-kickings they used to deal out in their younger days. Certainly, there's a ton of us out there that wish we had the same moves, looks, and action we had when we were young, but there is a limit. It's all merely dreams and memories, not something we wish to go out and re-live. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, or I'm being a realist. Bones do break, high-flying action followed by dynamic explosions is awe-inspiring, but being in your mid-to-late 60s means you wake up with a jar of Icy Hot and arthritis medication when all the glamor shots are done. I can't entirely knock The Expendables...if it can hold the attention of 9 through 15-year-old boys, it isn't all bad.
Wow, what a horrible movie..........yeah I liked most of the actors in this movie but together they are horrible. I enjoyed all of these actors growing up but something happened when they put all of them in the same movie. I do not know how better else to describe this movie...........when it ended I just blinked and thought of what else I could have been doing.
"Speedracer" and the "Transformer" movies, even the second "Charlie'sAngels."These are silly or even bad films by the conventional measures. This istoo. It is vapid, misogynistic and fundamentalist. I wouldn't recommendthat anyone go unless they know themselves well enough. But like those other movies, there is a lot of cutting edge filmmakingcraft in this and I enjoyed it for that reason alone. I think theremust be some separation from Sly the image and Sly the filmmaker. Isurely  for example  admire the effectiveness of cable TeeVeedemagogues at the same time I find the effect vile. There are three notable things. There is a neo-Kurosawan notion of planes, even in the fight scenes. Here is a sophisticated example: The film starts with Sly checking outthe mission and deciding to not follow through, abandoning a woman torape and torture (torture by the way by waterboarding). As in all hiscombat movies there is a scene where he pensively encounters hisconscience and decides to do the right thing, turning into a killingmachine for justice. The setup has Micky Roarke in the close foregroundgiving a story about how he is cursed by not having saved the life of awoman. (What he is doing while giving the speech is cool. The speechitself is pure formula, but the fact that he is painting flowers on anold guitar for a woman who has left him is sweet. He plans to smash theguitar when finished.)During the scene, Sly is in the background out of focus. This is notthe way Akira would do it: he would and back and use a telephoto soboth would be in focus. Welles talked about compositing two shots withmultiple focal points. But here Sly is blurry; he is further away thanhe would be in reality. We shift to a closeup of Sly as he meetshimself and comes to his decision. It is a closeup. His face fills thescreen, but he is still out of focus. What they did was crop the shotto zoom in. It takes a craftsman to even think of this and thecinematic effect it gives. And how it mitigates the worst part of anyStallone movie, that turning point, because he just cannot act. So thecamera does it for him by setting planes.Throughout, we have muted colors, lots of shadows that swallow thescene with piercing lights. This not only makes the thingEastwood-moody, it allows for strobes and shadows to animate the battlescenes. They are done well if you can allow for the macho silliness andmagical powers. And for every key sequence of scenes, we have a sliding threedimensional camera. Christopher Doyle has changed the world of the eye, bless him. There is a seaplane that glides and swoops like seaplanesdo. The camera emulates these movements after showing them to us, andcontinues throughout much of the movie.Bruce and Arnie make fools of themselves.Ted's Evaluation -- 2 of 3: Has some interesting elements.

First off let me say I enjoyed the flick and found the film to be a mano-a-mano pure actioner with plenty of hardcore blood and plenty of terrific kick butt action sequences including the last thirty minutes of which was NON-STOP action and in itself worth the price of admission. There are several stars in the film but the film really belongs to you got to love Jason Statham, Jet Li and Stallone as they have more screen time and action sequences than the others. From where I sat the only flaws and gripes I have with the film is what has become a trend in action films, the fast cut or rapid cut editing, which in this film takes away some of the enjoyment of the terrific man to man stunts of Statham, Li, and Couture. I also wish that some other photographer had shot the film. Today its common for film critics to pick and choose what they like and dislike based solely on whose name is on the product and this film is no exception so go see for yourself. From where I sat this film is better than the Liberal product AVATAR and A TEAM and that other hogwash nonsense INCEPTION. While it may not be a great film it certainly is a good film in the action genre.
I'm sorry, men of the world, but "The Expendables" is a piece of crap.In fact, as a man, I'm a little embarrassed that this putrid, structureless, diarrheic pile entertained a single one of you. Withoutan ounce of artistry, Sylvester Stallone has essentially created "TheTwilight Saga" for men, and just as that series caters to alowest-common-denominator teenage girl audience, Stallone deposits thisCro-Magnon mess for males, simultaneously juvenile and out-of- touch. The suffocating machismo of it all makes it tough to pick a place tostart. First, the film is hideous. On a technical level, many of theshots are out of focus, smearing the ugly greens and browns into amuddy pastiche. The rest is soiled by awful CG that completelyundercuts the entire eighties aesthetic. I'm trying hard to think ofsomething less conducive to an action throwback than a half-dozenrifles with animated laser-sights firing bullets that spill digitalbloodÂNo luck yet.Even forgiving the film its bland palette, cinematographicshortcomings, and near total lack of practical effects, "TheExpendables" misfires on the single most obvious ingredient forexciting actionÂCompelling set pieces. It takes place, almost in itsentirety, on a small South American island where there is a dock, apalace of some sort, and apparently nothing else. Those backdrops setthe stage for some dismally choreographed shootouts where, despite theexotic locale and 80 million dollar budget, "The Expendables" maintainsa consistently amateurish feel. And for a movie positively brimming with A-List (or once A-List) actionpersonalities, how about some personality? Ultimately, it doesn't evenregister that Stallone assembled such a dynamic ensembleÂThere isn't asingle distinct personage among them. Sure, Jason Statham likes knivesand Stallone prefers firearms, but that's about where the definitionends. Anyone could have played these nobodies, and it reduces whatshould be the film's sole distinguishing feature to mere stunt casting.Regardless, there isn't a flaw I've illuminated that would hold waterif the film was even fun, but "The Expendables" is truthfully one ofthe most boring of the year. Call me desensitized, but I can only seeso many torsos explode, so many fatal stabbings, and so many explosionsbefore I start to yawn and check my watch. Action only works whenthere's something at stake, and Stallone does his best Michael Bayimpression in his flagrant disregard for that simple storytellingtruth.Nothing is ever at stake in "The Expendables." Ever. Not one of themany protagonists is placed in even momentarily convincing danger, andwith almost no story to back up the dreary killing, the action losesall dramatic impact. Stallone's assembly line slaughter has neither thegravity to make us care nor the creativity to make us squirmÂUnlesswe're squirming out of anxious impatience.I'm not an idiot. I realize "The Expendables" is more "Grindhouse" thanit is "Rambo," but it fails even as a disposable homage to eightiesaction. It might be a class reunion of sorts, but it's the kind whereyou end up sitting around talking about expired memories instead ofmaking new ones. In recalling the cheesy charm of the decade that madehim famous, Stallone could stand to do far more embellishing. Hesucceeds in making a film with an eighties mindset, but it's a hollow, lifeless effort that completely lacks the charisma that makes thosefilms memorable twenty-some years later.Conversely, "The Expendables" would be forgettable no matter whatunfortunate decade birthed it. And yet, here in the year 2010, this isthe number one film in America two weeks runningÂI guess I just don'tget it. Everything I go to the movies for, and not just the frivolousstuff like story and character, is completely and entirely absent here.Men of the world, if this is really what you find entertaining, thenconsider this my resignation.
¨ We are the shadow, the smoke in your eyes, the ghosts that hide inthe night. ¨ Sylvester Stallone directs, writes, and stars in TheExpendables, an action packed movie that knows exactly who its targetaudience is: Men. This film pays homage to the action movies from the80's and 90's, and either stars or has cameos from most of these actors(Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Sylvester Stallone, BruceWillis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger). The Expendables also stars some oftoday's action heroes as well such as Jet Li, Jason Statham, SteveAustin, and Randy Couture. Stallone had previously written and directedother of his movies, such as the Rocky and Rambo franchise. The reasonI actually enjoyed this movie was obviously not because of the plot, but because it was just great to see all these stars working togetherand doing what they do best. The action scenes are raw and really bringback the nostalgic feeling of the 80's B action movies. The film willsatisfy those blood thirsty action fans who want to see realchoreographed action scenes, plenty gun and knife fights, crushedbones, and a lot of explosions without relying on the CGI effects. TheExpendables isn't a smart movie, the plot is formulaic and predictable, but the action makes up for it. It doesn't try to be something itshouldn't, it knows exactly who its target audience is and will onlysatisfy them. It's not like ¨Killers¨ for example that really lostitself by trying to target different audience groups and couldn't bedefined in any genre. The Expendables is a fun and entertaining actionfilm and it doesn't try to be anything else.Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is the leader of a group ofmercenaries who call themselves the Expendables. The team consists ofLee Christmas (Jason Statham), a man who really appreciates his knivesand is having some love issues; Ying Yang (Jet Li), an expert inmartial arts who is always being made fun of because he is the smallestof the group; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who handles heavy machinery;Toll Road (Randy Couture), the demolitionist, and Gunner Jensen (DolphLundgren) the sniper who is beginning to go a little crazy. TheExpendables return from a successful mission in Somalia, althoughBarney has to cut Gunner from the group because he is becomingdangerous and unreliable. Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) offers the group anew mission on a small South American island where they have tooverthrow the military dictator General Garza (David Zayas). TheGeneral receives the money to support his military dictatorship from anAmerican drug dealer named James Munroe (Eric Roberts). Barney and Leetravel to the island in order to scout the enemy where they meet one ofthe rebels named Sandra (Giselle Itié). Barney decides the mission istoo risky and doesn't want the group to get involved. He offers Sandrato escape with them, but she decides to stay and fight the enemy. Backin America, Barney has a talk with his good friend and tattoo artistTool (Mickey Rourke) and he decides the right thing to do is accept thejob and rescue Sandra. The Expendables is one of those fun action movies that is enjoyed evenmore because of the cast. I would recommend this movie only to fans ofthe 80's action films who would like to bring back the memories. Thisis not a film for everyone, and is specifically a man made movie. Ireally had a lot of fun, but this is no masterpiece. This isn't a smartaction movie with good dialogs like Tarantino films, but it has thebest action stars who are really good at kicking butt. The movie alsohas a couple of funny scenes which made the movie all the moreentertaining. The fighting scenes were excellent, there is a lot ofgore, but the plot is pretty simple, however that doesn't take away allthe fun you experience while watching all these men get their bonesbroken and killed. It has been a long time since I saw such a high bodycount, and gratuitous violence, but this is the sort of thing you areexpecting from a movie like this. I didn't think I would have as muchfun with The Expendables like I did, but this is definitely not a moviefor everyone. If you hate violent films then you will not want to seethis. This is for fans of the 80's action movies who would like tobring back some of the nostalgia.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/
A crew of mercenaries called 'The Expendables' are on a mission tooverthrow a dictator. The boys are back starring : Sylvester Stallone,Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren ,Mickey Rourke and Terry Crewsand it's bigger and badder this time. The film itself is compelling and bad-ass.I give all credits toStallone for Directing this film and also to film one of the bestmoments including a nice fight scene between Jet Li & Dolph Lundgrendamn was that some good stuff !!! Stallone manages to get thosecompelling images on the silver screen with big buff muscular menfighting each other and I have to say he certainly did a good job, theycertainly ramp the word bad-ass into a whole new level and it also wasthe fastest 103 minutes of my life, I really do hope they make anothersequel. In overall I would definitely recommend this film, it's worthyour time & money. 9 stars out of 10.STALLONE DID IT AGAIN WITHOUT Disappointing ME :).!!
There is stuff blowing up and more stuff blowing up.There are people killed and more people killed. Then there is stuff blowing up and more stuff blowing up.Then there are people killed and more people killed. Then there's a car chase, a fight, some more stuff blowing up, morepeople killed...and more stuff blowing up and some more people killed.Mickey Rourke mumbles something, Arnold Schwarzenegger mumblessomething, Sylvester Stallone mumbles something, Jet Li mumblessomething, Eric Roberts mumbles something, the wrestlers mumblesomething, Bruce Willis mumbles something, some more people mumblesomething, then a girl screams, something blows up....Some more people get killed...Terry Crews mumbles something, Jason Stratham mumbles something, a carchase happens, some more people mumble something and the credits roll.Oh yeah...there was something about a story of injustice or somethinglike that somewhere. Whatever it was about - who knows.A gun lasts away a few hundred people and then more explosions and thegirl lives.
First off, it would be amazing if they sold this on video as well asDVD's. Which basically means, this movie is really an 80's film. Thistypical action movie provided enough adrenaline to keep me happy, soI'm sure it will with others. But really, the best part of the movie isthe cast, a combination of the 80's action men, with the modern actionheroes. Even Empire said "the most awesome action cast ever assembled".That is so true, classic actors lining up to do... lets face it, a poormovie. There are large chunks in the film where nothing happens, wherethere are others which cram ten explosions into one minute. I'msurprised it wasn't two hours like most films these days, in myopinion, thats a positive thing. Then again, there making a sequelsoon, which could last hours. Hopefully the sequel will have more ofArnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, who were both in the originalfor less than three minutes. The acting was average, the action wasamazing, the story was poor. If they do another, they need to actuallyhave a decent story. The purpose of this film was to pump people withadrenaline, in other words, mindless action. Its worth watching as itsvery watchable. Don't hold your breath though, its just there if youwant to see something blow up.
I will start by saying I wanted to like it. On paper it should be good, all the stars and a good budget. But its terrible. The plot islaughable, it makes Rambo look worthy of an Oscar. The characters wereprobably found on the pages of some remaindered comic books. The actionscenes are Boys own stuff so I have given it 5, but it really is awfulin every other respect. Slys acting is sort of Joey Tribiani doing Daysof Our Lives. With lots of guns. There is quite a bit of uselesspadding in the film, the bits with Arnie, Bruce and Micky Rourke. Allof these pieces are completely pointless, and Arnie seems to have addeda new layer of extra woodiness. Unless you have exceptionally lowstandards you will be disappointed. You have been warned.......
-The action scenes could not exploit the skills of the stars. For example the fighting between Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren was a big disappointment. It's too dark. I could hardly see anything.-The plot has been repeated multiple times before.-In short, it's a waste of all the talents of all the stars such as Stallone, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham
I'll give this film 6.5 out of 10, I expected this movie to be bad ass,ass kickin', elicit and kindle film since it's an all star cast or morelike the dream team for action movie cast. The first half was prettycool, After seeing bloody scenes against those pirates and the the 2men vs hundredths of soldiers, I've said to myself "This is what I'vebeen expecting." But then I ask myself again, what comes next? I'vepredicted that they will kick the asses of all the army, And yeah, theydid. I've predicted that no Gunnar is still alive, And yeah, he'salive. I've predicted that no one in the expendables army is gonna die,And yeah, they're all alive. Statham's life was predictable. Prettymuch everything was predictable. The only thing that I was proved wrongwas the one that defeated Paine. Never thought that Toll will finishhim. It was a pretty good action movie but the drama needs a little work. Ithink Stallone should have make the army looks more dreadful and evil,Like what he did in Rambo. I even think that Rambo was better.Overall, it was a decent film. It tried its best to keep all thecharacters rolling. But like what I've said, It was pretty predictable.
I didn't give this a "1" because it at least didn't include thedepravity of so many movies these days. But that is the only positivething about this monstrosity! It featured horrible acting, horribledialog, and a pretty ridiculous plot. This was truly a case of mewanting those two hours of my life back! How anyone could seriouslyrank this load of crap as better than a 7 may be biggest mystery of theuniverse! I assume 10's are posted by people associated with themovies, because a movie worthy of a "10" come along so rarely. "10" issupposed to mean perfect people! How could anyone think this is aperfect movie? (how can 99% of all movies be considered perfect?) Butthe fact that so many ranked it as a "9" has me wondering ifcivilization has officially come to an end.
Its great to see Stallone still kicking it at 63(now 64), and all the rest of the guys in there early mid 40's, and 50's except for Jason Statham who remains the young pup at 38. The movie has some solid moments, and the characters are very believable. Yet where is the main plot? Well i'm still asking myself this. Eric Roberts(usually known for his horrible performances)really does a great job as an American drug lord who goes in to liberate a small country somewhere close to Mexico. The only thing you really know is The Expendables get recruited by Bruce Willis who has a short but decent cameo with Stallone and the Legendary goveranator Arnold S. Basically they are sent there to take out this general but find out there is a little(very little) more to it when they rally the troops and find out they are extremely out numbered, but never fear they will find there way. The female informant on the island won't leave, mainly because its her home and she feels that its not necessary and that things will change. Well not leaving gets her totured, and also you find out she is the evil general's daughter, which isn't a spoiler OR much of a big suprise. Mickey Rourke plays a broken down veteran from the gang known as Tool, who tattoos up Stallone in the beginning and has a few other small appearances here and there, Rourke definitely being the best actor of the bunch does very well for the small part he's given. The rest of the guys just run through the motions and really play a very small part from an actors perspective but later on really get into the action. The fight sequences are planned out well enough, though, some of the editing will give you a seizure because the footage moves so fast from scene to scene you really can't tell who's beating up who, which is the way a lot of action films are directed these days.Well in summing up The Expendables all i can say is if your a hardcore old school fan of blowing things up without much of a story(much like Rambo) then this movie is definitely for you. Even though i think they are trying to break a record for number of explosions to occur in a film, for the oscars(ha), it should appeal to those who like this type of movie. I was very pleased to see such older veteran actors together even if it was for a short time. I would however like to see Arnold and Stallone take on a roll together, which i hear is a possibility in the near future, though what movie? No one yet knows. Arnold works out religiously everyday which is a great thing considering he's just behind Stallone at 63 years old. Statham and Jet Li should also really really get together, since there fighting styles are much the same and they steal much of the psychical action in the film. So lets hope for that as well. The rest of the characters including Dolph the dope Lundgren(who i must say is horrible in this movie) should just be happy i suppose that they were given a chance to be in a film to show off there skills. So all in all its a decent film that will appease to old school 80's action film fans, but leave the younger crowd saying, who's dad is that? I myself enjoyed most of it, but i could stand a little more substance from a plot perspective next time. Expendables 2? Come on its Stallone what do you think? :)Btw, i don't use names or tell a whole lot in detail as to not give away much of the movie. Although this pretty much sums it up lol.
The Expendables. What can I say? I was really looking forward to thismovie due all the action stars in it. Then the critics came and bashedthe movie all the way down... Let me make this clear. The critics - cansuck it. This movie is awesome. It has a basic action movie plot: "hey, let's go and kill this dictatorwith lots of bang-banging and make funny comments during fights". Itworks. It really, really works. Expendables was really enjoyable, mostly because of all the famous movie stars in it. Jason Statham goesand kicks everyone's ass, Jet Li beats the crap out of everyone andTerry Crews goes and shoots everything to pieces. It's awesome, it'sbrutal and it's truly enjoyable. All the action sequences were great and the Expendables team made fewreally funny comments that made the whole audience laugh in thetheater. Also, a short sequence with Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willisand Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same shot... That was something reallymemorable. The Expendables was excellent, and I hope they'll come upwith a sequel.
