| Storyline | A troubled evangelical minister agrees to let his last exorcism be filmed by a documentary crew. |
I think the less I can say about The Last Exorcism in terms of plot, characters and what happens in the film would be for the best because Iwalked into the film not knowing too much about it and was reallysurprised at how much I liked it and how I found it to be quitedifferent than what the trailers for the film presented. The film isshot like a documentary borrowing from such horror films as CannibalHolocaust, or The Blair Witch Project and it is done pretty much thewhole way through like a documentary film. Because of this the film hasa cinema verite look which makes what we are watching look and feelauthentic and at times almost as if we are really there ourselves. TheLast Exorcism tackles many different themes throughout the film and theway it handled and discussed these issues in a low key and subtle way Ithought made the film quite strong and it worked for me. I think a lotof people who will go to see The Last Exorcism will undoubtedly compareit to William Friedkin's 1973 film The Exorcist because for years itwas considered one of the scariest films of all time and it was a flatout masterpiece and one of the best films of all time. Because when TheExorcist came out there were not a whole lot of films out there aboutdemon possessions and exorcisms by priests, so whenever there has beenone made they often tend to borrow certain elements and scenes of TheExorcist. I found The Last Exorcist though to have enough trueoriginality in it's script that it borrowed little to nothing of the1973 film and just so readers do not get confused, these films are inno way related to one another. The things I liked about The LastExorcism was the exploration of faith and doubt that certain charactershad in the film as well as sometimes the bad things that are done inthe name of religion. These are in the film and are touched upon insuch a way that it does make us think and stay with us as the viewer. The writing here is really well done for it's character development aswell as putting us the viewers into a story where we are not sure howit will end, or what will happen and because of the whole subject ofthe film and everything that is discussed in it, it is bound to staywith you after you have seen it, whether you understood it, or not, oreven whether you liked it, or not. I liked the film for the raw, grittyand realistic look that made me feel like what I was watching wasauthentic and because of no major special effects, or big name actorsmaking it feel like a Hollywood film. The fact that the film is lowbudget and only uses some music and no major attention grabbing effectsscenes really makes it all the more powerful, thought provoking andscary. The film has a lot of dread and terror just with theperformances and music it uses, instead of a lot of violence, or goreand I found it to work better for me in that way. Not to mention that Ithought all the actors and actresses here gave their best job and allthe performances are really believable and help elevate the story towhat it is. This film works because of the thought provoking and dreadinducing writing and atmosphere, the A game actors and the low budgetlook and feel to the film that makes everything just feel so real. Ifound everything in this film worked and worked really well and thepayoff to me was near perfection. This is a film I would encouragepeople to see and would be curious to know their thoughts, orimpressions on it because I do not think that everyone will come out ofthe theatre in the same way, or with the same thoughts, or ideas aboutit as others. This is the work of a very talented cast and crew. One ofthe best horror films to come out recently and one of the best films of2010.
I can't believe I watched the entire film. there wasn't a single scarybit, and the plot twist was terrible. spoiler! the fact that at the endthe girl was carrying a demon child which was then sacrificed by thecult under cover just made no sense. If they were trying to protect saiddemon child why then would they sacrifice it? zero plot development inthat direction. I'm all for surprise endings, but seriously justbringing an ending up which seems to have nothing to do with anythingdoesn't constitute a "twist" in my mind. And what was with the redboots? was it just a way to show how controlling the father was that hewouldn't allow her to have fun shoes? And I think that the priest wason a sitcom at some point. Bad acting all around, except maybe theteenage kid, he was creepy. Don't watch it. Forget it existed. Not evenworth a DVD rental.
The horror film The Last Exorcism is directed by Daniel Stamm and starsPatrick Fabian and Ashley Belle. The film takes place in modern dayLouisiana. The film starts out with a reverend, Cotton Marcus (Fabian), who ismaking a documentary with a group of filmmakers. The subject of thedocumentary is how he believes exorcisms are fake and is going to provethem to be fake. Marcus has performed many exorcisms in his life andall of them were with simple tricks. So he picks a random letter fromhis mailbox asking for an exorcism and goes to help them. When theyarrive at the home of the family the reverend is confronted by theeldest son in the family and is told for them to leave. Of course thegroup stays and the reverend shows how he performs his exorcism and allgoes well. But then they realize that the girl is really possessed by ademon...The screenplay for this film was good for the most part. It wassuspenseful the whole way through and I really felt attached to CottonMarcus. There were many great scares in this film and I would say thatthis is one of the best of the hand-held horror genre. The only problemreally with the film is the last five or so minutes. There is just somuch information stuffed into them and it is not truly explained. Itjust makes you leave the theatre saying to yourself what just happened. It is easy to form a theory on what happened at the end but no theorycould have the overall support. It would have been a strong 7/10 if ithad a decent ending. The direction for the film was fine. Stamm really knew how to work withthe two leads getting very believable performances out of them. Hetruly knew how to build up suspense instead of using tons of gore toget scares out of the audience. Overall solid direction, for the endmaybe he could have put in some more explanation, but that is reallythe writer's job.The acting for this film was good, especially by the two leads. Stammwas very funny as Cotton Marcus and was a truly likable character.Towards the latter of the film I began to question many of hisdecisions but I never started to dislike his character. Ashley Bellewas great as the girl with the demon in her. She was very sweet andlikable but when she was scary she was really scary. The rest of thecast did fine, especially the brother who was creepy throughout thefilm.Overall I give this film a solid 6/10, I would of gave it higher if theending was stronger. I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys agood horror film.
I am so tired of the movies with the dude following the people with avideo camera. Enough already. Cannibal Holocaust was the mother ofthese... Then came Blair Witch. And then every time you turn around, the same crap. What the hell is the deal with this movie? First youthink its just the Preacher being a quack, then the molesting siblingthen some devil worship crap? Im sorry but the people behind this moviecould've done a far better job. Im just so glad I didn't buy this crapand opted to rent it is not even funny. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, theExorcist movies (yes even Renny Harlin's) are far better remaining trueto the possession thing as opposed to some, well you figure it out.
It's another exorcism film, but a good one to boot. It's done with the shaky camera thing like Cloverfield and Blair Witch. If you can't handle that kind of film, then you might not like it from the start, though i have no trouble with it and i like the shaky movements since it adds an effect to it. I like the girl Nell in the film, she's my fav. and seems to do the best job of all the people. The prist and his film crew go the old farm and help get rid of the demon thats inside of her. I like whats follows after. There are creepy moments here and there and what going to happen next sort of thing. One girl in the audience kept screaming during every spooky scene, like yeesh. Many people complain about the ending... i like the ending and think it fits perfectly.... but thats just me.
I love horror movies. Not only the popular like Halloween of nightmareon elm street! Also the unknown, all the horror movie with low budget. But this one is that worst. The story is made on a documentary... fine. I understand it and i don'tcare. But why do we need to talk to the priest, to his family, understand that he don't really believe in god, that he's a goodstudent since he's 6... We don't need to know his past. Just understandthat he is a priest, he got a family, he's good in his job... that'sit! The introduction is too long. 40 minutes on his ******* life. After that, the story begin... the people in the cinema stop talk andhope to see something scary. But no, nothing. Again, an other 20minutes without anything. The first exorcism, bad, fake... nothinginteresting. The first thing that can be interesting : After the lightsgo out. The young girl decide to move... but fort 5 minutes. That's it.During the movie... i think i've been stress 3 or 4 times... the restis just... bad. The end with the demon and the bad priest... come on. Ilove the house... with all the signs. But it's not enough to save theending. Bad script, bad movie, too long and not enough scary. THIS ISNOT A SCARY MOVIE!!!
I've been reading the reviews and felt the need to clarify a few thingsin case you're reading these reviews, debating whether or not to seethis film.1. It is not the worst horror film ever. People who say something likethat obviously have not seen enough horror films to know the worstones. By no means is this movie a revolutionary breakthrough that willreinvigorate the horror genre, but the film does a good job at making adecent exorcism movie documentary-style.2. The video camera shaking is not that bad. Yes, it shakes, but that'sthe style of the movie. Get over it. If you don't like that style atall and are always made sick by it, don't see it.3. To say the ending was ambiguous and left people missing the themesof the movie and therefore a bad choice is also a bit ridiculous. Ifyou saw the movie Inception and still loved it despite the "ambiguous"feeling the film left you with and the obsessive pondering over whatactually happened in the last dreams sequence then you can't complainat this ending which was NO WHERE near as complex. If you take a fewminutes to work it out (talk amongst your friends if need be), theending is not ambiguous at all.4. The filmmakers themselves never claim that this is actual footage. So stop worrying about "how they found the camera footage" in the firstplace. The filmmakers made a work of fiction, and I'm sure they hopetheir audience understands this.I can't deal with all the critiques, but to comment on the films goodqualities:It does add a few different takes on the "classic" form of an exorcismfilm such as the documentary-style, the characters, and particularlythe ending. As far as scariness, you have to understand the nature of what makes agood exorcism horror and good documentary horror: the "sluggish buildup" (as many juvenile critics have termed it) is everything. What makesthese movies great is that you, for a while, forget you're in a horrormovie and start to believe you're watching real events unfold. You cansplit hairs over how long the film needs to convince you that thesepeople and situations are real but without it you have no movie, or nogood exorcism/documentary horror film. With it's slower (I wouldn't usesluggish) beginning the film hopes to sincerely connect you with thecharacters and believable setups so that when bizarre events do occuryou are more likely to (sincerely) accept them and be frightened bythem. No, the movie was not overwhelming scary. It doesn't go for cheapjump out moments (maybe once or twice) or CGI animations of demonspopping out everywhere. But it does deliver a more realistic approachto child possession than most of its predecessors, which is prettyscary. The ending is definitely a big moment for people's final judgment ofthe film, because it goes in such a different direction from what therest of the film points too. But as stated before it is not ambiguous. All I will say is keep an open mind, and realize that this film thoughdocumentary-styled is still a work of fiction (again, as statedbefore). It took me a few moments to adjust once the ending was over, but after some thought I didn't mind the twist. Could it have beenbetter? Definitely. Am I outraged? No. The film makers just wanted toproduce something a little different than the expected exorcism ending.Perhaps the biggest upset of the ending is that it detracts frommajority of the film's atmosphere of realism. If you ARE a fan of exorcism movies and movies like the Blair WitchProject or even horror movies in general, The Last Exorcism is a goodwatch to satisfy you're boredom and keep you entertained for an hourand a half, especially if you understand and like the construct of"sluggish build up" and if you have a few extra bucks that you'relooking to spend. If your looking for a horror movie that will revivethe horror genre for our time, this isn't it. But the film isn't tryingto be the next big name in horror, so my rating is based off of theintentions of the film itself. Overall, the movie did it's job in beingmildly original, having great acting (considering that this is in facta lower-budget horror movie), in staying true to the genre, and indelivering an engaging story.
To better understand what a waste of time and mental energy this filmis, I will break it down into four parts. The first quarter isReligulous. The second quarter is The Exorcist (TV Edit), or betteryet, The Exorcism of Emily Rose... a movie that I liken to a LifetimeMonday Night Original. The third & fourth quarters are a mash-up ofRosemary's Baby & Blair Witch Project. It's so like Blair Witch Projectthat I wonder now if it used some of the same footage! So what if itearned 10x what it cost to make in its opening weekend... THIS IS THEPOWER OF ADVERTISING! I'm convinced that people flock to these moviesin droves only to see what, if anything, will top the shock and awe ofThe Exorcist. Let's hope The Last Exorcism will be the last exorcismmovie! This jumbled mess of a movie will fall to or below #5 nextweekend. The story sucked! I was able to buy into ParanormalActivity... I was able to buy into Blair Witch Project... Blair Witchhad me on edge for 2 or 3 days! But sadly, the whole leave the audiencewith more questions than answers formula is lost on this film. Itrelies far too heavily on the assumption that people who take in filmslike these will have the overactive imaginations to carry it. If you'repaying attention, the story is cut & dry and would take all of 3minutes to tell.
Let's face it we all check out reviews whenever we're contemplatingwatching a movie. The only problem I've found doing this is that thereseems to be too many pretentious film people out there tearingeverything to shreds. Forgive me if i'm wrong but I don't think themajority of the people out there are going to a movie to critique thecamera angles, lighting and so on. They're going to be entertained. Yesit's true a good storyline and acting can make or break a movie but whois anyone really to decide whats considered good or bad. We all viewthings in different ways, just because you think something was baddon't assume everyone feels the same way. I guess what I'm trying tosay is think for yourselves. If you listen to one bad review you mightbe missing out on a potentially good movie. Now for my review (As I stated before this is just my opinion so justtake it as that). The Last Exorcism kind of reminded me of ParanormalActivity in the way that everything was shot in documentary style(except with more expensive equipment). To set the record straightabout the overly shaky camera thats complete BS. The only part that wasshaky was when he was running. Come on could you keep a camera straightif you were running? One thing that was a little weird however, was theguys voice behind the camera. Anyway, we start off with the story of acon-artist pastor who wants to shoot a movie exposing exorcisms as asham. This part was actually quite humorous so I could see where thosecomments about it being funny came in. The story slowly picks up whenPastor Manley gets to the Sweetzer house and meets Nell. After rigginga fake exorcism (which was also funny) and collecting his money, Manleyleaves and heads off to his hotel. The story really picks up from hereand starts getting scary. As with Paranormal Activity the non-believerskeep coming up with explanations for things going on with Nell untilthey just can't anymore, so they run away. OK heres where it all goesdown hill, you ready? Like idiots they decide to turn back to get Nell, thats when they find out that this whole thing was because of a Satancult. This made all the ghost believers in the crowd say WTF! At onepoint I was involved in the paranormal community so thats why I went tosee this movie. It's probably another reason why I liked it more thanother people. But the ending really killed it for me no pun intended. All in all I have to say this movie was entertaining, funny and abummer. If your thinking about seeing this it's up to you. You mighthate it you might love it, who knows?
**SPOILER FREE** This movie is the PERFECT definition of how and ending can completely kill a movie. First let me start by telling you that I loved over 90% of this movie. It wasn't what I expected at all! for your "average" horror movie the plot was complex and sophisticated. Reverend Cotton Marcus is a man of god who although doesn't believe in demons or hell, preaches the word of god into peoples lives. After his son is born premature and only survives thanks to a skilled doctor, Cotton slowly begins losing his faith after coming to the conclusion that God did not save his child but that a Doctor did. A few months later Cotton sees a news article about a little boy who is killed during an Exorcism having the life literally choked out of him in the process. Cotton is disgusted by this act and sets to expose (via a documentary) the fraudulence behind the whole concept of an Exorcism. Cotton proclaims he wont have another child die because someone mistakes a mental illness for a "demon". From this point everything is set into motion and the film delves into the Exorcism of farm girl Nell who you constantly find yourself asking, Is she really possessed of just crazy!? The movie has a few jumps but it is just so much more than your average horror flick. You find yourself anticipating what will happen next and are stunned every so often to see the plot thicken as more evidence begins to point to the fact that Nell might just be disturbed. I still could not get over how well put together this movie was...That was until the last 10 minutes.Just when you think you know everything you are presented with a "twist" ending. A twist ending that you would NEVER see coming, and quite frankly you NEVER would want to see coming! This psychological horror drama quickly turns itself into a B grade teenage horror movie in a matter of 10 minutes! The entire credibility of the past 85 minutes that you have just watched are just completely thrown out the window. Its not so much that the ending is "Horrible" but it is a complete let down considering the direction they decided to take it. Trust me, upon watching the movie you will understand The Last Exorcism was a GREAT movie and I didn't understand why it had such negative press. This movie would have been one of my favorite horror movies if not for that piece of trash ending that it had. For that reason alone it lowered this movie from 5 stars to 3.75 (which I averaged to 4 on Amazon). I would definitely recommend renting this movie as you will enjoy yourself for the majority of it. End the movie 10 minutes early and your gonna love this one even more.Enjoy.
Well, in a world full of crappy movies, horror genre is not shiningneither these times. I had no real expectations regarding The LastExorcism and actually, it kind of impressed me.I read a lot of hard stuff on the movie and a lot of people hated it.Some were talking about the (brilliant) ending and others complainedabout the shaky camera. This movie is a clever hybrid between documentary style (Blair WithProject for example) and horror genre. What works in 'TLE' is thealways active camera that rides the audience through evil. It's morelike a roller-coaster ride in a mad circus of horror and you can'thide. For those who hated the ending, well I would say: Watch some good oldhorror movies like The Devil Rides Out or Rosemary's Baby (or morerecently, House of the Devil). These movies are about satanism too. Theending is to me a sort of an homage to the genre and I would not changea thing.Characters are good and give an extra edge to the story. The LastExorcism is not reinventing horror movies, but absolutely capture thefeel of the genre. Compared to crappy Paranormal Activities, this isfun!
I was not expecting a horror movie, I was not expecting gore or hugescare. I was expecting some kind of story with a form of meaning. WhatI got was the worst waste of time in years of movie going.First, we never see Nell like she is on the poster for the movie. No,the highest we find her is on the top of a big dresser during one ofthe only rambling action we don't get to see in her bedroom.Nothing is scary, even lame seat jumper scare are avoided. The movie inpainfully slow to start, and then you're just waiting for some actionto begin and well, you're almost at the end when you start to thinkthat nothing is ever going to happen. Until the U-Turn when they goback to the house and follow some screaming. Now for 30 seconds, youdon't really know what's happening, but you do know that they aregetting killed (it's a spoiler, I'm not saying who is getting killed).Just remember that this movie is based on "found tapes". And that's it,you're watching the generic scrolling by...This movie made Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project look likemasterpiece. Positive feedback here must be from the studio...Avoid at all cost, even on DVD.
If you know nothing about film, acting, cameras....then you are in theright place with this film. Someone purchased a cheap camera at Walmartand started filming out of the box. This film is the result of thiseffort. I won't spoil it for you because I left after 60 minutes! Icould not hang until the end and my popcorn was gone...then I was gone. These people need to keep their day jobs! And that us being kind. Idon't think acting lessons would help anyone in thus film. The southernPreacher in the film must make all the Christians proud to be presentedas a con-man...nothing more. He doesn't believe in demons, but try tohelp people...
The studio gives the middle finger to its consumers by issuing a "rental only" copy that is completely stripped of **all** extra and bonus features. Keep this in mind if ordering a used copy. Unless specifically stated in the description, assume it to be one of these stripped discs.

Cotton Marcus performs his last exorcism on innocent, home-schooled Nell.
This review is from: The Last Exorcism (Amazon Instant Video) I enjoyed this movie. Showing how exorcists can be frauds and showmen. Good twists and actually started to feel for the characters, until the end of the movie. Completely lost me, and turned me off. Hated the ending.
I was about to give this movie 3.5 stars until the dumb ending left me shaking my head. I also wonder how many more of these shaky camera documentary style films we can take. Since the director, Daniel Stamm also did "Cloverfield" we know he likes the style even if it's getting a bit stale. This movie is a cross between the truly original "The Blair Witch Project" and 2007's "Paranormal Activity". One big difference is the acting which is first rate. This film is not unusually bloody, violent (except for some gutted farm animals and one poor house cat) or even soaked with bad language. Still there are plenty of `didn't-see-that-coming' moments, certainly enough to satisfy most horror fans. There is some true mystery as well. Is she really possessed or not? Can we just redo the ending please.
I just got home from watching this and I really, really enjoyed it.It's definitely not a movie for everyone, but I'll save that forlater...Reverend Cotton Marcus is a disillusioned minister. He's been preachingthe Word since he was a young boy and even performed his first exorcismat the age of 10. After years of being a minister he loses his faith -preaching is his job and he treats it as such. After performing manyexorcisms, his faith is waned even further when a boy his son's agedies in an exorcism. Now he attributes more to science than JesusChrist. He decides to bring a documentary crew along for his lastexorcism. The documentary crew are there to show the world thatexorcism is a fraud as is Reverend Marcus.Upon opening a letter marked URGENT, Cotton and the crew head to theSweetzer Farm where the cattle have been mysteriously dying nightly.Louis Sweetzer claims that his daughter is possessed and asks Cotton toperform an exorcism. That's all of the plot that I can reveal. I completely agree with AICNwhen they say "the less you know, the better." Typically I readspoilers, but I refrained from doing that for this one and I'm glad Idid. I thought this was genuinely scary and very effective. There aren't too many special effects - some minor contortionist scenesand pyrotechnics are the majority of what we get, but it works well. Wealso see how Cotton plans to expose the exorcism as a fraud - I feelthat's revealing too much. The camera work is jerky at times, butthat's what happens when you run while filming. There is one scenewhere they make really good use of the camera, but you'll have to seethe movie. The acting was adequate. Ashley Bell did a really good job and wasscary when she needed to be - that's all that counts. Patrick Fabianactually kind of made me angry as Cotton - but this is a good thing. His character is essentially a minister who walked away from the faith, but doesn't know anything else so he preaches for a living - notbelieving what he's preaching. These two stand out the most, everyoneelse gave a pretty standard performance. Now onto the part where it's not for everyone. This movie isn't so muchabout possession as it is about demonic forces. I've experiencedSpiritual Warfare to a degree and this movie was on the mark of whatthe enemy can do. If the movie was about a documentary crew filming anactual exorcism and Cotton's faith was where it needed to be, thiswould have been on par with The Exorcist. However, that's not the case. From my experience with Spiritual Warfare, I looked at this from theperspective of "what would I do if I were in his shoes?" That made themovie much more effective and scary for me. Not everyone can or willlook at it from that perspective and may not like it. It's very slowand the scares don't start until pretty late - they're effectivenonetheless. The ending might throw some people off, but I think itworked well for the plot.Personally, I'd recommend this.
The Last Exorcism is a textbook example of how a film can start off very promising and completely fall apart in very short order. Scripters Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland and director Daniel Stamm create a very engaging and solid old-school horror film that utilizes all the mockumentary background of all three men very effectively in the first two acts. The performances of the two leads are solid in Patrick Fabian as faithless minister Cotton Marcus and Ashley Bell as the possibly-possessed Nell Sweetzer. The tension builds nicely for about an hour, effective without resorting to cheap jump scares or gratuitous blood and gore. Unfortunately, the final act is goes completely off the rails and the sublime becomes silly and overblown in the extreme to the point that it seems as if a much inferior film's ending got tacked on to pad the running time. In many cases this would not completely ruin the experience, but unfortunately for The Last Exorcism this amounts to a full one-third of the film. The end result is another horror mockumentary that has a lot of promise but falls completely flat, leaving the audience deeply disappointed with another lower-tier entry into the subgenr
Ever since a group of kids went into the woods with some camcorders andcreated The Blair Witch Project and sold it for a millions dollars, everyone has been trying to do the same thing, only with differenthorror themes. Paranormal Activity gave us shaky camera ghosts. Rec oneand two and Quarantine gave us shaky camera flesh eating zombies.George Romero tried that too with Diary of the Dead. Cloverfield gaveus shaky camera Godzilla. Baghead gave us a shaky camera slasher. OpenWater gave us shaky camera Jaws. District 9 gave us shaky cameraaliens. Now we finally have shaky camera exorcism with The LastExorcism. And that's about all it is, another Blair Witch Project ripoff. Perhaps shaky camera movie makers ought to try a different genre. How about a shaky camera romance? How about a shaky camera comedy?Let's just hope the remake of Race With The Devil isn't shot in shakycamera style.
