| Storyline | Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a mechanic - an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. Its a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed - he wants those responsible dead. His mission grows complicated when Harrys son Steve (Ben Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishops trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he cant turn his back on Harrys son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. But while in pursuit of their ultimate mark, deceptions threaten to surface and those hired to fix problems become problems themselves. |
People used to Transporter (and the like) are gonna get a surprise inthis movie. Jason Statham plays a professional killer the true, seriousand credible way. The kind of role that is usually reserved to the"elite" actors of this kind of film genre, like Bruce Willis or morerecently Matt Damon. The Mechanic gives Statham the legitimacy hedeserves to play the same role in place of such actors. In the Transporter Statham plays a hero in a movie where nothing, nosituation and nobody is really taken seriously. The charismatic actorinjects a lot of humor that matches perfectly his character. In the Mechanic, we have a still charismatic actor who plays a seriousrole that doesn't allow the same humorous attitude. While some elementsare predictable, the script is not bad, and even offers muchoriginality. Also, Donald Sutherland plays remarkably the killer'smentor. All in all, this is an enjoyable movie.
I liked this film to a certain extent and the filming is great withdifferent camera shots giving the film some great texture. The problemI have is the storyline was there but they could have done so much morewith it. Statham puts in a good performance along with Ben Foster but Iwas just slightly disappointed by the film in its entirety. It justfelt like the director had run out of ideas after he had written thebeginning middles and end. And when Statham was training Foster I justfelt that its jumped from foster being a normal bum strait to a highlyskilled killing machine. In all the film is an easy watch but felt thatthis could have been a classic.
I give this version of The Mechanic a score of seven out of ten points.I am writing out the full words for numbers instead of just putting thenumbers because I hate how we have to type a full ten lines just to geta review approved. Alse it helps that I just wrote all that stuffexplaining how I was typing out full words haha just a few more linesto go.Jason Statham does his typical Jason Statham thing and for a fan of hismovies like me that is great, he's not as awesome as he was in theTransporter movies etc but is still very good in this movie and it is aless intense movie than those movies were anyway. He is a hit-man andthat is all you really need to know. Guys will like this movie a lotbut it is less good when you saw the original the Mechanic movie withCharles Bronson which was a very awesome and surprisingly under ratedmovie masterpiece.
The Mechanic certainly isn't Academy Award material, which is not to be interpreted as any sort of endictment, but it was entertaining. It is movie with its share of violence, but not grotesque. A lot of action. It was an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.
Another non-stop action hit with Jason Statham. His name alone equalsadrenaline-filled and fast-pumped action. And "The Mechanic" is noexception. Action from start till end.The storyline in "The Mechanic" is very interesting and you quickly getswept up in it and the story keeps you nailed to the seat until themovie ends. There isn't a lot of twists and surprises, but still, themovie managed to come out with a rather good end result. On the cast list are names like Jason Statham (playing Arthur Bishop)duh! And he really is in his ace in a movie like this. DonaldSutherland (playing Harry McKenna) also had a role in the movie, although a fairly small role. I think it was a shame that Sutherlanddidn't have a longer role and more screen time in this movie. TonyGoldwyn (playing Dean) was really well cast for this particular role;there is just something scheming and secretive about him. Ben Foster(playing Steve McKenna) also did a really good job with his role. Andit was a treat to see Jeff Chase (playing Burke) in the role that hehad. The movie is filled with action, fighting, speed and thrills from thebeginning and up till the very end. And this is what we have come toexpect when we see Jason Statham's name billed on a movie poster orcover."The Mechanic" is a movie that has enough value to be watched more thanonce, and I do believe that I will be making another return to itsometime down the line.
I am biased writing this review because I am a huge Jason Statham fan. To those who, like me, enjoy watching his flicks you will not be disappointed with this one. Statham is excellent as always. 4.5/5.0I admit that I have not seen the original with the great Charles Bronson so have no comparison on that front. As far as how the story goes I like it. I am also a fan of the assassin/hit man genre and this was definitely on par here. 4.5/5.0 for that. The story was fast paced and the acting was alright. Donald Sutherland played a good part for the short time he was there. Ben Foster was ok in his role, nothing overly fantastic but played the part of a young gun know it all as good as anyone. 3.5/5.0The extras on this Blu-Ray were lacking to say the best. Deleted scenes were ok but no optional commentary. No commentary on the movie and the featurette on the stunts was fairly cool but limited. All in all a disappoinment as far as Extras go but then when you look at this movie how much more could there have been? Maybe the director discussing how they went about doing the remake. 2.5/5.0Overall, I will watch this movie again. This is up there with Statham flicks like Cellular and Chaos but not as cool as say the Transporter movies. 4.25/5.0 for a Statham flick.Final Verdict: 3.75/5.0 and cos it's Statham I give it 4.0 stars.
I've been sorely disappointed over the past three to five years withJason Statham's work. Transporter 3, Crank 2, The Expendables, DeathRace (not too bad, but still disappointing), Chaos (I liked it but itwasn't that good), and War (you would think based on the premise thatit's two of the better martial arts actors in the world that this wouldhave been phenomenal but it just missed on all cylinders). The onlymovie that I have seen of Mr. Statham's over the past few years thatpassed my expectations was The Bank Job, and I truly believe that movieflew way too far under the radar because it was better than mostcritics gave it credit for. That being said, I went to this movie with a pretty remarkable recordwith being disappointed in the past four Jason Statham movies I hadseen, almost as bad as the Cleveland Cavaliers 26 game losing streak. However, this movie is good 'ol kick your buttocks out of the seat, throw your fists in the air, gun slinging, blowing up cars, fun.Statham in this movie is your typical Statham character, in every senseof the saying. He's silent with his words, but speaks out loud with hiseyes and when he does say anything it's usually either something thatmakes you half-heartedly smile or something really meaningful. We allknow and love this Statham. Truth be told, this is EXACTLY like hischaracter from The Transporter movies, EXACTLY LIKE IT. He's hired byone person to do a job (usually dirty) that most people don't realizeis being done and in one way or another one of his jobs pisses someoneelse off and things go to heck from there. This is the Statham that we all love (as I said), this is the Stathamthat I've been wanting back for a really long time. He doesn't strikeme as an actor who will be dolling it up on the big screen in a bigtime dramatic role and have the Oscar buzz about him, so he needs tostick with the roles that will satisfy his fans until the next one.Lets face it, he's never really going to be a world renowned actor forhis acting skills, he's going to be known the world over for his kickbutt martial arts extreme stunt coordinating movies that get youradrenaline pumping the right way by mixing all those with good story, deep characters (for action flicks), and more and more kick butt-iness.It's just who he is and I for one love him for it. This movie, totallythe Statham we've been wanting for a while now.The real story here though is in fact Mr. Ben Foster. Wonderfullytalented actor, and the emotional scars he can expose just by thatpainful expression in his eyes and on his face is evidence of a starjust waiting to burst out on to the A-list spotlight. One of these dayssoon, he's going to be a name everybody knows and loves, much likeJoseph Gordon-Levitt is doing now. Ben Foster here has a charactersimilar in the aspect of the pain his character is going through on aregular basis to his character in Alpha Dog. Really good acting here onhis part. The story is a typical story of hit men being hired by corporate snobsto take each other out only to find that the stories they have beentold MAY have been the same type of lies they feed to the public on adaily basis. So what really did happen in South Africa? You'll find outtowards the end of the film. Until then, all we really care about andall we SHOULD care about is how much butt can the combo ofStatham/Foster kick in the hour or so between when we first learn whatis happening and when we finally find out. The added twist of BenFoster's father and what happened to him throughout the film is alittle bonus that gives the movie a little more heart and a lot morekick down the line. One of my favorite things about this movie is thatwhen most directors usually try to draw a process or conversation outthat really doesn't matter, Simon West FLIES through those momentswhile giving Statham's character a quick cliff-notes style narrativeover those particular points in the movie. That's one thing thatbothers me about a lot of action movies these days is that they try tohard to explain certain moments and characters believing that it isgoing to add "depth" to their film when in reality it slows the moviedown when it doesn't need to and ultimately takes away from the film asa whole. Great job by Simon West to recognize that and move throughthose moments painlessly here. This movie is just good 'ol fashion kick butt fun like it was meant tobe. Sit down, relax, and pump those fists in the air with every pull ofthe trigger and explosion on screen, you are in for one helluva funtime at the movies. Don't take it to seriously please, and enjoy!
This review is from: The Mechanic (Amazon Instant Video) I like this version of The Mechanic more than I liked the original. This has a better ending. The only thing that I was left wondering about was why the main character had to use a boat to get to his lair, but then he had a sweet old Jag XKE at the same location that could (apparently) be driven away from there? Small detail, I know...
This review is from: The Mechanic (DVD) Awesome movie. Great action scenes. Relatively darker than Statham's usual deal. Respect the rating: this is not a movie for little kids.
Jason Statham plays a hit-man or as they say in this a Mechanic.Unfortunately for Arthur Bishop(Statham's character) he is tasked withkilling his wheel chaired mentor Harry McKenna played by DonaldSutherland. But after he does the deed Ben Foster who playsSutherland's son not knowing that Statham was the one to do the killinggoes to him asking to be trained as an assassin himself so that he caneventually get payback on the person who killed his father. ButFoster's Steve McKenna is a bit too much of a hot head and gets sloppyand not being the professional that Bishop is.This movie is a remake of a Charles Bronson movie from 1970, which wasa good movie but I believe that this current version is a bit better.
¨Victory comes with preparation.¨ The Mechanic is a remake of a 1972film of the same name staring Charles Bronson in another of hisinfamous revenge movies. Bronson made at least a dozen of those flicks.I never saw the original one, but I didn't have to because I've seenseveral films like The Mechanic, action packed and dealing withrevenge. Jason Statham was the right choice to play the role Bronsononce played in the 70's since in a way he is becoming the Bronson ofour generation. Statham has made several films like The Mechanic in thepast, The Transporter being perhaps one of his best roles to date.Statham might not be one of the most talented actors in the industry, but he is good at action. He seems to be playing pretty much the samerole in all his movies (the tough guy act), but given the right scripthis films can be entertaining. The script was originally written byLewis John Carlino for the original Mechanic, and it was adapted byRichard Wenk (16 Blocks) for this newer version. The Mechanic isdirected by Simon West, the guy who brought us Con Air, and he's beenaround action films for a while. This probably won't rank among hisbest works, but The Mechanic still manages to entertain with all itstwist (some more predictable than others), and nonstop action scenes. The Mechanic is a very violent film; it has a lot of blood and rawscenes. The problem with the film is that we've seen this sort ofaction movie in the past, but Statham still makes it worthwhile.Jason Statham is Arthur Bishop, a ¨mechanic¨, in other words a hit-man,or an elite assassin (whichever you prefer to call it), and he's one ofthe best in his field. He's quiet, professional, and remains unattachedto his victims. He receives his targets via an internet add sent to himby his boss Dean (Tony Goldwyn) and prepares for each job in his quietbayou, which serves as his hideout. Arthur is a perfectionist, hestudies every detail about his victims and if he can he carries the jobout as silently as possible. Sometimes you never even know he wasthere, making the murders appear as natural deaths. Arthur is troubledwhen he receives his next target because it is Harry McKenna (DonaldSutherland), his friend and the man who taught him everything aboutbeing a mechanic. Apparently Harry has betrayed the company and soldout some of the other mechanics. Arthur follows through with hisassignment, but when Harry's son, Steve (Ben Foster), wants Arthur toteach him everything he knows about being a hit-man the situationbecomes complicated. Arthur has a strict code, he's a perfectionist, and likes to eliminate his targets as clean as possible, but Steve ismore volatile and likes to get dirty. Arthur tries to teach Steve howto remain detached from his victims, but things begin to get messy. Thesituation gets worse when Arthur discovers that he was set up and thatHarry never had betrayed the company, it was the other way around. It'stime for Arthur to send his company a message for fooling with him.I really liked the opening scene of the film, I thought Arthur's firstassignment was well thought out and it helped establish his character. He did his job quietly and clean, and then he headed to his hideout, turned on some classical music and got rid of all the evidence like ifnothing had ever happened. The Mechanic begins with clean kills, butthen it becomes increasingly more violent as the film progresses. Thenthe twists begin showing up and several plot holes can be found, butthey are numbed down by all the violence. As long as the viewer remainsdetached to the plot, like Arthur is detached to his victims, then theywill have a good time with this action packed film, but if they sitdown and analyze it scene by scene then it probably won't be veryentertaining at all. The Mechanic isn't a great film, but it still isentertaining thanks to Statham and Foster who are great in the actionscenes. It's far from being memorable and I probably won't be seeing itanytime soon, but it's still worth a onetime viewing. This isn't amongStatham best films (like Bank Job, or his collaborations with GuyRitchie), but it is still better than most of his recent movies. Fosterand Statham form a deadly partnership and make this movie worth thewhile. In summary, The Mechanic is a forgettable, but entertainingfilm.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/
This was a really good movie but there was a severe flaw in the premisethat stops it from being great. Statham was outstanding as usual andBen Foster was actually really impressive. The action sequences weregreat and the acting and plot was interesting. Here's where that flawin the premise hurt it though (SPOILER ALERT!): When Statham'scharacter approaches Donald Sutherland's character to kill him, theytalk first. Sutherland asks Statham whether this was for the SouthAfrica incident. Statham says yes. While this can be looked at variousways, the most obvious way is that Sutherland did indeed seem guiltyand didn't try to explain his innocence to his good friend who would'velikely seen the sincerity in him. This premise led to the plot for thefinal "target" and it didn't work. Still a good movie if you can getpast that but that was pretty major nonetheless.

This review is from: The Mechanic (DVD) Whether you are a Jason Stratham fan or just an action junkie, this is a fantastic movie. For a hit man to stay alive obviously he must use his wits and know what he's doing and Stratham plays this one all out. Stratham plays this hit man as you expect one to be: brooding and secretive yet totally aware of everything that goes on around him. Past movies like Death Race showed the same drive, but this one is his best ever. Good writing, and even good acting make this one great from beginning to end. At just over 90 minutes, I wanted it to go on....
This review is from: The Mechanic (2011) (Amazon Instant Video) Nothing really spectacular here. Just a well made action movie. About what is to be expected from a hollywood big budget summer action movie. The script is tight, the acting is good and the action is great. It is a good popcorn action movie but really not more than that. You won't be talking about it at the water cooler tomorrow. But you won't be complaining about it either. About the remakeThis is a very loose remake of an old Charles Bronson movie by the same name. In that original work The Mechanic Charles Bronson is an aging hit man who takes on a young protege (Jan Michael Vincent) teaches him the ropes of being a hit man. That movie, while dated, is special. This movie loosely follows that same idea with a lot of modern updates. - more action, less dialogue, bigger explosions.
This review is from: The Mechanic [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This Movie is exactly as I expected it to be, decent and worth watching! When it comes to re-makes you have to forget about the original and just enjoy what your currently watching. It will help with this movie for sure, I liked it and found the Actors to do a much better job then I figured they would. Not bad Blu-Ray quality either
I am in no way familiar with the original Charles Bronson film TheMechanic from 1972, but that may have actually been a benefit with afilm like this. This remake does seem to be targeted toward mydemographic though. The Mechanic caters to those who enjoy hard-hittingaction films with a lot of blood that spews more vulgarities than youcare to keep track of with a fair chance of nudity along the way. Truthbe told, if done right those types of films can be massivelyentertaining and The Mechanic definitely falls into the "done right"category.Jason Statham really seems to be hit or miss when it comes to howentertaining his films are and lately his work just hasn't been allthat satisfying. The Expendables left a really sour taste in my mouth,so I wasn't sure how The Mechanic would turn out. However, this filmwas actually able to put Statham back in top form since it was able todeliver a pretty great story to compliment Statham's bone crunchingfight sequences he's become notorious for. Despite the fact that thedialogue is filled with F-bombs left and right, it fit the overall toneof the film very well. Ben Foster wasn't disappointing either. Fosteris one of those incredible talents in his early thirties that mostpeople seem to overlook as having endless potential. As far as hisperformance in The Mechanic, it isn't quite as powerful as he was inThe Messenger but seems to be more similar to his role in Hostage yetrefined a bit to leave his true motives questionable.Donald Sutherland also makes the most of his short time on screen. Hehas two scenes with Jason Statham where he makes two fairly longspeeches that seem to stick with you long after his character is gone. That's how short-lived characters in films like this should be;memorable. The one thing the film falls victim to is the shaky camera during fightand chase scenes. It works most of the time and isn't hard to follow, but there were two scenes involving Jason Statham's character where itwas hard to distinguish everything that was being shown because of thistechnique. It's just when two guys are in a scuffle and they'rethrowing fists or hurling their legs at their opponent, the camerawhipping back and forth at the same time doesn't really help matters. Now some guy's dead, another falls to the ground after we hear a snap, and another is clutching his stomach even though we only saw the maincharacter move twice. The technique gets confusing and either needs tobe modified somehow or dropped altogether for something new.The Mechanic is actually really entertaining and is very much thedefinition of a guy film. It's packed to the brim with explosions, bloody headshots, broken limbs, and even a hefty and destructive carchase sequence. The film is worth seeing for Ben Foster's performance, but it's nice to see Jason Statham in a film that isn't disappointingfor once. Overall, The Mechanic is dark, gritty, bloody, and just ahell of a lot of fun.
Remake from classic film directed by Michael Winner (1972) and starredby Charles Bronson with screenplay by Lewis John Carlino . Thrillingmovie about the very deadly rivalry between two contact killers .Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham in similar role to Charles Bronson) is avery professional hit man , he is the number one killing people with abullet whose reputation has caught up with him. Bishop makes hismissions of the way more mechanic and perfect, for that reason he isknown as ¨The mechanic¨. Lone Bishop only has one friend named Harry(Donald Sutherland in the Keenan Wynn character) . His last assignmentfor a powerful organization (led by Tony Goldwyn) results to be thekilling an important business man . Stressed and tired he plans to getout after one of his last jobs. He always works alone but he takes anapprentice named Steve McKenna (Ben Foster , role formerly played byJan-Michael Vincent) who learns the criminal lessons from his master ,both have innumerable ways to murder. At the beginning the protégéfollows the advices given by his master murderous . Both of whom form arelentless killer team but Bishop is caught in the middle of treason. As hot-headed Steve McKenna want to off Bronson and attempts to assumethe position of top hit-man.This crime thriller packs intrigue, suspense, noisy action-packed withgrisly killings ,explosive excitement, thrills and lots of violence andsex . This moving film is as calculating , cold and passionless as itscentral characters , two brutal hired assassins . Jason Statham withhis usual hard acting displays efficiently his weapons and killingmercilessly his objectives . It's certainly thrilling , though themorality may be questionable , even in this time, as the spectatorswere clearly on the Statham's side in spite of being a cruel killer .Statham as a wealthy murderer for a powerful organization offers thesort of strong acting as always. Furthermore, appears a nice secondarycast as Donald Sutherland , Tony Goldwyn and brief performance of thegorgeous fashion model Mini Anden as Bishop's love interest, but theromance isn't what this movie offers , it is about action and violenceand director knows his work . It packs stirring musical score composed, orchestrated and performed by Mark Isham . Colorful cinematography byEric Schmidt with spectacular scenes filmed at New Orleans . This bighit motion picture is professionally directed by Simon West though withno originality . The director Simon West's well-oiled techniquesgenerate some explosive entertainment and excitement as usual . This isan acceptable film about a deadly rivalry among two hired killers thatwill appeal to Jason Statham fans and action lovers .
Bishop(Jason Statham) is a hit-man, who kills bad people, that the lawcan't touch. And he is very clever, he manages to go undetected. Butthen things start to change. When his friend and mentor(DonaldSutherland) is killed, and he tries to help his mentors troubledson(Ben Foster). Who quickly wants to be like Bishop, so Bishop takeshim in, and tries him the rules of the trade.A good film, but not for everybody,if you get easily offended, youshould not see this film. But still an entertaining film, well paced,it slows down a little, but not for long. Jason Statham is good, but BenFosters performance really takes the film, it's good as well asdisturbing.
A friend sort of dragged me to see this movie, and I expected to hateit. I figured it would be over the top violent, implausible, withimpossibly clever "superman" killers...It was all that, but I sort of enjoyed it anyway. I think it wasbecause the acting was pretty decent, and the film made it almostpossible to imagine a shadowy organization in the business of killingpeople who needed to be killed. Don't get me wrong, most the the actionscenes were impossibly complex and anything but believable. However, ifyou can "suspend disbelief" it is a fairly enjoyable action movie. It was noteworthy that in some places the film added a bit of"humanity" to the lives being lost. The victims of the killers were notnecessarily impossibly evil sub-humans (well, maybe one was), they werejust persons who for whatever reason those in power wanted dead. Somaybe I liked the fact that the film had slightly more depth than mostmovies of this genre. And, there was a lot of action.
