Absolutely gut busting hilarious!

This is one of the funniest movies to come out in a very long time. Here's why:1. The movie was filled with belly laughing funny bits that were surprising and not the typical cliche kind of stuff. I haven't laughed this hard in ages. 2. There was also a lot of subtle humor, also making this movie very entertaining. 3. Will Ferrell was absolutely hilarious. That's to be expected. What was so surprising was Mark Wahlberg. He was different from his normal hard as nails tough guy roles, and he played off of Ferrell just perfectly. He was so hilarious. 4. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were perfect in their roles. They weren't on for long, but they were part of some very funny bits. Michael Keaton also contributed some fun to the movie. Eva Mendes was perfectly cast. All in all, a superb cast that made for an uproariously funny comedy. While there were periods that moved a bit slowly, that shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this movie. The laughs more than made up for any slower times. Also, those slower periods set up some of the funniest bits later on, and they set up the story. It was really relaxing to laugh so hard. I felt like I had a mini-vacation. I'd absolutely recommend this movie.

The Other Guys Review

THE OTHER GUYS STARRING: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan, Rob Riggle, Damon Wayans Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Anne Heche and the voice of: Ice-TWRITTEN BY: Adam McKay and Chris Henchy DIRECTED BY: Adam McKay Rated: PG - 13 Genre: Action / Comedy Release Date: 06 August 2010Review Date: 12 August 2010 Wow - what a movie! The laughs never stop in The Other Guys! I was literally laughing every two to three seconds, over and over again, non stop, for nearly two hours! Hands down, the funniest film of the year so far! And don't think for a second that all the laughs come solely from Will Ferrell; Mark Wahlberg, Michael Keaton and Eva Mendes are hysterical as well! The first few minutes or so had me wondering what was up with my man Mark Wahlberg. I was like, `why is he over-acting so badly?' But the more layers we peeled back from his character, Terri Hoitz, I realized the beauty Wahlberg was giving the character. Hoitz is a pissed off child, throwing tantrum after tantrum and its hilarious! Hoitz is so pissed because his desk-dork of a partner, Allen Gamble (Ferrell) wants nothing more out of his 9 to 5, than to be confined to the inside walls of their office. This does not sit well with Hoitz as he has a blood thirsty taste for action, and wants to be on the road with their piers, taking down the bad guys. Whatever do these two do for a living, you ask? Hoitz and Gamble are New York detectives who are the laughing stock of the entire police department. Unlike their hot-shot comrades, they are referred to as - the other guys.Officer Hoitz realizes he has to do something drastic if he is to get Gamble to go on a call with him. So naturally, after losing it with Gamble numerous times in the humorous opening sequence, Hoitz comes does just that; the details of which will not be divulged here. Just know that they take a call, and a case develops which is the entire force for the entire movie. In most films, this is called the `plot.' I wouldn't really call it a plot in this case however; for in most films, the plot would be comparable to a heart or some other vital organ that keeps the movie going. No, it's not vital at all in The Other Guys; it's more like a container, to fill with lots of useless stuff! But everyone involved in this film knows that you are either going to love it or hate it, and if you love it then it requires no plot at all! Nine and a half times out of 10 any movie that relied on this method, would not be a stellar flick; but The Other Guys is the rare exception. The movie is simply so much fun, and is stuffed with so many brilliant laughs, that we don't even have the lung power to calm down from our fits of dry heaving laughter, to even worry with a plot! There's a bad guy, he's doing bad stuff and our guys are out to stop him; that's all we need - now dump all the funny stuff right on top of it, please! We know Mark Wahlberg can act, so let's talk about Mr. Ferrell for a minute shall we? What a performance. He's playing an idiot as usual, yes; but he's so damn good at it here. Just like Steve Carell in Dinner for Schmucks, Ferrell is so into character - that you really believe he is this ridiculous of a tool. You believe him when he tells Mark Wahlberg that he has about six copies of the Little River Band CD in his Prius. And you believe him when he explains that he was so intoxicated that he honestly mistook a tube of tooth paste for astronaut food. Ferrell is a comedic genius; easily in the top five best comics working today. His height, body type and child like sensibility give him an edge over other comics. He also has a divine gift of pronouncing things in a gravely entertaining fashion; such as the way he referred to the female mountain lion as `Karen' in Talladega Nights, or how he repeatedly calls his Captain (Michael Keaton) by his first name, `Gene', in this film. These aren't necessarily funny names on their own, but coming out of Ferrell's mouth while in his shiny little character - they're as good as gold! I loved the scenes with Eva Mendes. She really pushed the comedy with Ferrell as a couple who we look at and just ask `how?' and `why?' Walberg's character Hoitz particularly finds them an odd match when he is invited over for dinner. He must have asked nearly half a dozen times who she was; not buying for a second that she could possibly be Gamble's wife in even the slightest minute form of reality. Most films would not have had the guts to try a joke like this that many times, but The Other Guys does, and I'm thankful for it! Far too many times have I wished a comedy would take the joke to the next level; just slide it a tad bit further past the line of normal acceptance, before it's gone too far. The Other Guys carries its jokes to that same line, carefully sets them down before it, looks the audience dead in the eye - and then hauls off and boots it across the line, time and time again! I know some audience members will find this tiresome, but I found it refreshing, to see a film that just doesn't give a damn and knows how much fun it truly is. And before we leave, we can't not mention the performance of the man himself - Michael Keaton. Where has he been? Man, do I miss him! He killed as the Captain here folks, let me tell you. His little back story for his character and what he does with his spare time, nearly threw me out of my seat laughing. Classic, classic stuff! I've long missed seeing Keaton's physical mannerisms when he's going off in a rant, and they are nicely on display once more for us, in this movie.Writer and director Adam McKay has a perfect record with his four films. All of them starring Will Ferrell, and all of them sensational. From Anchorman, to Talladega Nights, to Step Brothers to The Other Guys; where will he take us next? I don't care if it's a black and white musical with Muppets, giant skunks, vampires and dinosaurs; I'll be in line to buy a ticket to his next film.

The Other Guys

With a cast like this, there will be something for everyone. If you'relooking for a serious gripping plot with an end game, forget this.Indeed the producers did a great job with the trailer, as, it perhapshas the best bits of the film in it. That said, there are somegenuinely laugh out lines here to keep you amused. Will Ferrell has aknack of creating these over the top characters, sometimes to the pointof making you cringe. But I would let this film wash over you, thereare some great ideas here, but do leave you thinking "I wish they couldof expanded that idea."The Other Guys won't win any awards, but it wont offend either.

Good - would watch it again sometime.

Is there a recent movie that does not feature Samuel L. Jackson?Probably, but this movie stars the unlikely combination of Will Ferrelland Mark Wahlberg as two poorly matched big city police detectives whodo the paperwork and leave the heroism to others (Jackson and Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson). Wahlberg may be an action star but this movie isdominated by Ferrell's usual comedy/spoof genre. Just as there is onlya little action for Wahlberg, there is only some of Ferrell's usualstyle of humor.Ferrell and Wahlberg play two cops who have little in common.Nevertheless, the Ferrell/Wahlberg partnership works well to produce abetter than average action/comedy/police film. As if to emphasize thenature of this flick, Michael Keaton stars as the police captain whomoonlights at Bed Bath and Beyond. If you want to see Wahlberg in an action movie, check out Shooter orMax Payne. If you want to see Ferrell doing his stuff then watchAnchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Those movies are examples ofeach of these two stars at their best. This movie shows them bothrunning in 2nd gear, still pretty good I think. This movie is good enough to watch now and again sometime.

A complete waste of time

IMDb 6.8/10 ROTTEN TOMATOES 6.7/10 METACRITIC 6.4/10 ALLMOVIE 3/5 This is one of the worst comedies I've ever seen. Is this supposed tobe funny? I think I've smiled twice all the movie long.Poor performances, non-existing plot, really bad jokes repeated severaltimes all over the film. The movie is full of clichés and it lacksoriginality and imagination. I've checked my watch several times duringthe movie. I was so bored. What can be worst than a comedy that is notfunny...at all? Surprisingly, the movie has been highly rated, so maybe it's just mewho didn't get the jokes.

Sigh at "The Other Guys"

Wow...this movie was absolutely, completely, and utterly TERRIBLE! Andyes, I did in fact fall asleep mid-cinema, which is a rarity for me.What a disappointment that such an engaging trailer would amount to"semi-chuckle...droopy eyes...slumber" on the big screen. I genuinelythought that Wahlberg and Ferrell as the leading duo would have merolling in laughter, but instead, I was rolled up in a ball in my seatsnoozing away. Ferrell's character was a strange hybrid of slapstickand dry humor that left you sitting in utter boredom. As for Wahlberg, who I generally find unassumingly funny, his character's display offunny was over-rehearsed and fell totally flat. As for the plot, itwent, well, nowhere. My recommendation - your $10 is better spent elsewhere.

good movie

This review is from: The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) (DVD) Over all the movie was good. Not the best work of either actor but worthy of a pure fan of Walhberg or Farrel. The genre is a bit over played but the movie has laughs throughout that keep you entertained enough.

Some good improv, but it can't save this movie

There are funny moments in The Other Guys, but they mostly seem to bedue to offbeat line readings and on the spot improvisation. WillFerrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Steve Coogan are allresponsible for some good bits, but overall this thing doesn't work. The script can't stop patting itself on the back for making scathingjokes about TARP and financial scandals. But don't get too excited,left-leaning viewers, because as much as you might like the satire ofcapitalist excesses, you'll be put off by the relentless sexism andhomophobia. There are ways to make jokes about the macho culture of police officerswithout wallowing in a million woman-hating, gay-bashing one-liners.The cops are all portrayed as violent, sexist, homophobic fools. Ithought the movie might show these childish characters growing up alittle. That never happened. The best Will Ferrell movies, like Anchorman and Talledega Nights, follow his man-child characters as they mature just a tiny bit. In TheOther Guys, Ferrell starts as a naive but level-headed character whodoesn't need to grow up; he just needs to take off his blinders. Noneof the other characters change. Mark Wahlberg starts with grating, inexplicable anger cranked up to 11 and doesn't seem to know where togo from there. There's no buddy chemistry between Ferrell and Wahlberg. The actionscenes are fine, but unexciting; who cares about slow-mo gunfightsanymore? And since most action movies do such over-the-top stunts thesedays, there's not much The Other Guys can do to comically exaggeratethe action.Skip this limp attempt and watch Hot Fuzz instead: it's a much moreobservant and clever parody of buddy cop movies, and there are so manyjokes packed in, you can watch it again and again and find new thingsthat will actually make you laugh all the way through.

"i am a Peacock, you gotta let me fly......"

wow!!! amazing,,,,totally amazing...!!!!!Unlike any other Adam McKay movies this one is a winner..... The jobhe's done with this is totally amazing. Samuel and Dwayne Johnson comein at start and their part was small but it definitely gave this movieone hell of a start.....!!! After this we can safely say that hisskills for directing action movies are also good. The cop buddychemistry between Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg is truly something...Will Ferrel once again shows his skills and i gotta say this role wasdifferent than the previous ones...... And Mark, well he, what can isay, he is in one of his best roles.......... definitely my favoriteWill Ferrel comedy of all time.......

No thinking allowed in this hilarious farce

No thinking allowed...finally. After seeing "Inception" twice within a month, it's nice to sit back and laugh out loud at a very funny movie. We are used to seeing Will Ferrell, Steve Coogan and even The Rock and Sam Jackson break out funny, but it's been a long time since we saw Michael Keaton in such good form. And who would have thought Mark Wahlberg and Eva Mendes could be so funny. Ferrell and Wahlberg's characters become forced partners at the NYCPD and perhaps become the new standard for hilarity. There are, of course plenty of car chases and shoot-em-up scenes but it really doesn't distract much from the primary focus, which is the great chemistry between the actors and the really good script.

Really Terrible

I really thought this movie was so stupid - not good at all. Too hard to be funny and the story to me didnt make any sense. ...as well as some of the scenes. I like Mark Walberg - not his best work. I saw this at the movies - total waste of money and time.

Top of their game

We've seen the formula so many times you'd think it would be against the law to make this kind of film. Straight cop + ridiculous cop, they don't mesh well: hijinks ensue. I admit, the trailer didn't pull me into the theater for that very reason and I like both main actors in most everything they've done. Luckily this was on the rental cue and I got a chance to watch it. I think this is one of the best films either actor has been in and best film director Adam McKay has pulled off. The reason it works so well is because everyone here is at the top of their game, from the top billing down to the smallest supporting cast member. Farrell has moved from doing goofy bit parts to goofy characters with occasional punch to goofy characters that never drop the ball. His character is FLAWLESSLY funny and never suffers for weak spots in dialogue. And then there's Walburg who plays the straight cop but manages to both allow Farrell to have his high moments and still slip in that odd phrase or look that makes him believable AND funny. And THEN you get a great supporting cast who, again, hit it just right AND then you get stunt work that makes the action/danger seem real, hightening the intensity and humor. I literally laughed nearly non-stop through this film and haven't seen anything this funny in awhile. I'm still amazed anyone could breathe life into this old genra but these guys pull it off, nonstop. This peacock has flown.

samkay1 (2012-05-16 03:56)

Ferrell and Wahlberg are flying peacocks

The Other Guys doesn't bring anything new to the screen, but as a buddymovie, it is pretty solid. Writer/director Adam McKay milks the formulafor as much comedic value as possible, and it is enough to sustain theviewer for a hundred minutes. It starts to fly off the handle (a bit)around the end, by going into action mode, but even here, the presenceof comedy is evident. It kind of makes you wonder how Michael Bay wouldfare if he tried comedy. Scene one has a little too much Michael Bay in it. It's a sequencedesigned to make sure the audience is listening, It is a bit overdone, and is certainly the wrong type of sequence to put opening creditsover. We are not sure which to watch, the film or the names of thepeople who made it. From there on, The Others Guys, runs nicely. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are a great mixed matched couple. Notonly are their personalities different (mostly), but they could not bemore physically dissimilar. It never occurred to me just how big WillFerrell is (then again the last time I saw him was a few years ago, inStranger than fiction)I got a kick out of this one. The Other Guys is pretty good for itstype, and offers enough laughs to be worth your money.

No Go

Talk about a movie that had potential and fell short. So you'rethrowing in your ingredients and you open with the Duane Johnson andSam Jackson doing a great macho opening and they end up jumping off aroof for, like, no reason, and then Ka-put, silence. Beat. Beat. Theaudience explodes with laughter. Great. Perfect. Check the Gate, let'sgo home. Because that's what most of the audience wished they had done80 minutes or so later. And you have Michael Keaton. He's a God! Likehaving Bill Murray or some other comical genius on board. Will Farrell, well, you know what you're getting with Will Farrell, and you get it,he delivers. Eva Mendes…WOW…and that ALL works. So where's the problem?Oh yeah, the movie isn't funny. The jokes aren't funny. Mark "E" Markisn't funny…he's acting with that stupid soft delivery thing he does, which did work in Fear because he's pretending to be a soft spoken guyand is hiding that he is a psycho. I thought he was great in that, butin this movie, he's actually playing it like that's who he really is,and at times it does work, sometimes really well, but overall itdoesn't. And if you're not buying one of the two leads for part of themovie, then the movie doesn't work. A very large percentage of thejokes fell really short. I was pumped to see this movie and wasdisappointed.

Disappointing

I'll start off by saying that I am a fan of Will Ferrel's movies. Iliked Elf, Stepbrothers, Anchorman, Talledega Nights and his SNL skits. But The Other Guys, in my opinion, was, simply put, a bad, unfunnyfilm.I really tried to like this movie. I tried to find the laugh-out-loudhumour that I saw in Stepbros and Anchorman, but it simply wasn'tthere. Maybe I should watch it again (IN CASE I DO, CONSIDER THIS MYFIRST OPINION). The movie got off to a promising start, with Samuel L.Jackson and Dwayne Johnson making me laugh in every scene that theywere in. And Ferrel's naive character along with Wahlberg's insecurecharacter gave me high hopes. But, as the film progressed, it waspainfully clear that they were always mere inches away from a greatpunchline, but you soon realized that they had already said thepunchline, and the "funny" joke was finished. However, the acting wasgood; there were no poor performances. It's just that their dialoguewas unfunny.I'll sum it up like this: if you've seen the trailers, you've seen thefunny parts. End of story.

Hilarious movie

This review is from: The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) (DVD) I thought it was going to be another bad attempt to be as good as Superbad (kinda like how awful hot tub time machine was) but it was another great movie!

(2012-05-13 14:48)

is the writer's strike still going on?

this movie is aweful, laughed once or twice. I like both main actor's but together they are aweful. idk whos fault it is this movie was horid but they need to be removed from film production ASAP.

Innocent fun!

This review is from: The Other Guys (Amazon Instant Video) Refreshingly funny! It is rare that my husband and I both enjoy the same movie, and even rarer that our teen sons do too. I appreciated the innocent fun. It seems most comedies are too raunchy these days. Foul language was not a problem, either.

TV Cousin in the Wings?

Is The Other Guys a knock off of Matt Nix's Good Guys currently running on Fox TV, or visa versa? Either way, it looks like good old Hollywood incest at work. If you like The Other Guys, you'll be sure to enjoy The Good Guys with a bewildered Colin Hanks and an outrageous Bradley Whitford.
