The famed blue cartoon characters come to the big screen.

The Smurfs is funnier than Yogi Bear, because Yogi Bear was trying toact funny, rather than just be funny, but The Smurfs knew when to befunny at the right moments, it also has adult jokes than can go overthe kids head, except one adult joke I felt was not needed. But non theless it was still an entertaining film. The CGI Smurfs are pretty fun to watch. So was Hank Azaria as Gargamal,he quite the scene stealer, he just really gets into the role. NeilPatrick Harris is also good in his role, not overly being funny, but heis funny at the right moments. it also has incredible effects, the bestsince Garfield and Alvin and The Chipmunks.

More than just We...

To cash on the popularity of newly discovered animated movies and therising popularity of The Smurfs are viewed as a cash cow. What a congame!!! With regards to the story, it simply fails to connect with thechildren. A simple linear story could have been identifiable with kids, but the story starts off on a wrong note. Even my son felt disenchantedwithin 30-minutes. As for me, the movie seemed to be a rehash of Cars2.Well, the secret which has been unveiled now throws quite some surpriseas it is revealed that the animation film The Smurfs is neither anIndian product nor has it been made in collaboration with anInternational animation house. Instead, Percept Picture Company hasclaimed the rights of a US film that goes by the name of The Smurfs.Meanwhile, the buzz is that Akshay Kumit will be dancing to the latesttunes with supermodel Naomi Campbell for the shooting of a promotionalvideo for The Smurfs. Joining them will be his wife Twinkle andBollywood starlet Lara Dutta. The actor has already worked with a lotof Hollywood bigwig like Sylvester Stallone, Preston Routh and SnoopDogg for his other movies.

Best movie of the year

I was very excited about this movie, and it didn't disappoint. It feltjust like an episode of the cartoon. Hank Azaria made a perfectGaragamel, and while the voices of the Smurfs were a little jarring atfirst (being different from the cartoon), but quickly becameunnoticeable. The CGI was perfect, it was easy to believe the Smurfswere real blue elves rather than special effects. Unfortunately, itdidn't leave much room for a sequel, although if Garfield andScooby-Doo both get sequels, and Alvin and the Chipmonks gets TWO, thiscertainly deserves at least one. *SPOILER* Maybe have Gargamel get backto his own time somehow, and have the movie set in the Smurfs own timeperiod instead of modern times *END SPOILER*

A well-recorded movie, all in all

I have to say I was amazed when I first heard there would be a movieabout this ever-so-popular cartoon. Some people may complain about how bad this title is, but I don't sharetheir opinions for one simple reason : time.Time passes, as it always had and always will and we have to adapt to afew things. Back in time when the original cartoons on Smurfs aired, not all kids stayed home and watched this ( very much unlike today, where kids do almost nothing but play games and watch movies, but I'mgoing off-topic here ). We have to face it: no movie based on a cartoonever worked as good as it's original did, because of the simple factabout its length: cartoons are basically 30min long, and movies are atleast hour and a half, during which time one can lose focus, interestor at worst, a few nerves. I will not rate it excellent because it hasits flaws, basically poor story-work, but I won't explain it further asI have no intention on spoiling out what happens. The plot itself couldhave been better, but I reckon it's not a total loss, considering thatthis is a movie based on a cartoon; the animations are great: one couldbarely see a difference between smurfs from actual humans. As for thecast and crew, I can't say anything bad about them, since they: 1. Arenot the main characters of the story (human does not equal smurf) 2.Played out the characters just fineIn one sentence, my review on the title would be: Unbrushed diamond.(it shines, but it can shine better)

Tedious film with unbearable tunes

Dwelling within a blindingly colorful village infested with mushrooms, fetidly infantile jokes and resonating with maddeningly cacophonoustunes, "The Smurfs" shuts itself down into its microcosm of puerilityand forbids entry to the older audience members. After bearing with thepainfully monotonous beginning that takes place in their native land,we hope desperately that the transition to New York city will bringabout more intriguing adventures. Unfortunately, the tedium also takeson the far larger proportions of this new setting, completely engulfingthe potential for the adult spectators to derive any fun at all. Theadded 3D component sadly only introduced another axis by which ennuicould travel. Overall, "The Smurfs" refuses to spread the hilarity andcheer shared only with the much younger viewers by enclosing itselfinto a fortress of achingly dull jokes and overly amiableconfrontations all magnified by an unnecessary three- dimensionalscope.

Not the best flick for a child

The Smurfs have been a part of history for many current children andadults today. This movie, with a more realistic approach and usage ofpuns/manipulation in more modern day language and slang may not appealto all kids in terms of entertainment and understanding. As a teenager, this may not the movie of desire to watch but as I have I am able tocomment holistically. The casting for the voices of the Smurfs was not of the best choice;there are better enunciating speakers in Hollywood and that's that. Asper Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays, they are friendly faces to thetarget audience, with Neil Patrick Harris being a significant USP forthis movie as far as older age groups are concerned. With a simple storyline and a interesting cinematography, the movie waspleasing to watch as per the flow of events. From a child'sperspective, the movie was a bit higher than comprehensive for a childhence leading to an enjoyable time, but not as much as some, moreclassic, movies provide.

A good opening transforms into a really bad movie

The Smurfs is a live action / CG movie which squanders its initial promise. We are introduced to the Smurfs as they perform a song number in their village, see Gargamel crash the party and destroy their village... and then inexplicably it takes a left turn as Smurfs escape through a worm hole to modern Manhattan with Gargamel in pursuit. The remainder of the movie becomes a tedious alternating snore of chase scenes and "bonding" scenes as the Neil Patrick Harris character tries to deal with his uninteresting middle class issues. Which design should he use for an ad campaign? Who cares! Is he 100% comfortable with the baby his wife is due to have? Who cares! This story is so mechanical, so tedious that you could almost have replace the Smurfs for the Hop bunny or Alvin and the Chipmunks or Yogi Bear and it would have made as much sense. It's bland, lazy, a criminal waste of a good franchise and just a waste of time. Perhaps really young kids won't care and the CG is pretty good but it could have been so much better. Rent or avoid.

Chix Chat on Film review: A Smurfing adventure in the Big Apple

There are very few movies playing this year in theaters that I wantedto see less than The Smurfs, but something about these little bluepeople fascinated my grandson Three to the extent that when the trailerhad shown on the television he would stop and take notice every singletime without fail. His attention span is very limited given that he is22 months, but when his Mom decided to take him to see it I had to gotoo, since it would be the first movie for me with my first grandchild. The Smurfs are not new to me, I have endured them for a while but thiswas a new presentation of them done in a live action film and in 3-D.We opted for 2-D since the glasses could prove to be problematic. Iopened my mind and considered the possibility that I might beentertained. The film does provide a few history lessons throughout thestory by Narrator Smurf (voiced by Tom Kane) for the viewers who areold enough to understand, so that if you are new to the Blues you findout about the magical Smurf village headed by Papa Smurf (voiced byJonathan Winters), the fact that he has all sons who were delivered bystork, and that Gargamel (Hank Azaria) created Smurfette (voiced byKaty Perry) in a dastardly plan to foil Papa, who he is completelyobsessed with. I liked the film as much as I possibly could, and Ithought that the story had an imaginative take on getting the Smurfsinto the real world. But even with all the variety of Smurfs I foundthe most interesting character to be Azreal. There was truly some magicat work with his facial expressions and when he laughed I couldn't helpbut to laugh. The special effects at work with Azreal made me sit upand take notice, because I had to find something else to focus onbesides Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris), who I did notparticularly take to. What was his problem? Who wouldn't immediatelyfall in love with little blue people who have little tails that lookalmost exactly like their little noses. The Smurfs package was perfectfor its target audience, small children. I refuse to say anythingnegative about this film, as it will be a favorable memory in my lifeforever, with that in mind I am giving it a smurfing blue light, whichI'm sure they must have and love in Smurfland.

Smurf-ariffic!

I really don't know who Smurfed in the Wheaties of some the reviewersbut I thought this move was totally awesome. I loved the Smurfs as ateenager and could not wait for the movie to come out. I went with my14 yr old daughter and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a modernday cartoon movie and that is exactly what you get. I guess you have tohave a sense of humor and a life to be able to truly appreciate thismovie. We had a wonderful time and were laughing the whole way homegoing over different scenes and lines. I would love to go again with myolder daughter and my grandchildren. 2 thumbs up from this mom anddaughter.

Great Family Film

It is simply entertaining for the whole family. It has a simple storyline and it is so smooth, that time flies!Nothing to analyze, just relax and enjoy good entertainment. The graphics are very well integrated to the scene and story.

WARNING: DVD doesn't play in many players

Very good movie, with great animation and a good cast. That is, if you can get the DVD version to play; seems it won't in some DVD players. Tried two separate copies in our Toshiba and Philips players, which handle anything else.

(2012-05-18 21:40)

No, no, no

For those of us with kids, pPlease don't do this to us again. That's all I ask. I'm begging you.

Not so Smurfy

The Smurfs was not good movie and not completely horrible but it was awaste of money. I don't think it is a children's movie...more of a 16and up movie. The Smurfs voices were wrong and Mr. Harris did not act using his "A"game. Acting was a complete waste of talent. But I guess the actors didnot have much to work with. Gargamel's character was all wrong andseemed to not really fit in the movie (at one point he peed inside arestaurant into what he thought was a "chamber pot"!)The Smurfs is mildly entertaining, at its best. Kids might like this, but only if they haven't seen the original cartoons. And for those thathave seen the original cartoons, be prepared to be disappointed.

My daughter and I love this movie

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) What can I say? It's like taking me back in time, with a few changes. Although its not exactly what I was used to seeing when I was little, its still very good. If you were a "hardcore" Smurfs fan when you were little, you will appreciate this movie and the changes that were made. It has a great story line, easy to follow, and I like how it shows the Smurf that everyone is scared to be around because he's always doing something wrong (Clumsy), do something right at the end. To me, it shows kids (and adults) that being who you are, isn't a bad thing. Very cute!

Disappointing, but does have its merits

I am a big fan of The Smurfs, so I was all for seeing this movie, though I was dubious as well. The Smurfs does have its merits, but israther disappointing too. I will talk about the merits first, while notoutstanding the 3D is quite good(I've seen far worse), Hank Azaria isperfect as Gargamel, Jonathan Winters successfully manages to make PapaSmurf the most lively of all the smurfs and Neil Patrick Harris gives acomedic grace to an otherwise banal role. Feelings on the music weremixed, nice and jaunty but forgettable soon after. The editing couldhave been tighter also. What I didn't like so much about the film wasthe predictable and rather thin story, the clumsy writing andjokes(including one inappropriate Marilyn Monroe allusion), the rushedpace and that apart from Papa, Gargamel and perhaps Smurfette(though Iwasn't entirely sure whether I liked Katy Perry or not, my guess issometimes yes sometimes no, and I liked how they explained why therewas one female smurf character) the characters aren't developed enoughor given enough personality to make them properly interesting. Inconclusion, has its merits but not recommended. 4/10 Bethany Cox

The Smurfs movie

This review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) Very good movie for all the family, including teenagers who, even if it is sometimes childish and predictable, like being brought into this fantasy world. Of course this isn't the original stories written by Peyo, but the movie is well done.

Robert (2012-05-15 06:27)

Bleh...

I heard bad reviews when it first came out. Then I finally get the DVD.Um... yeah. I never grew up with the smurfs cartoons, yet I just feelthat they didn't stay true to the characters. Okay, fine this is akid's show so it can't be bad with naughty stuff. But Elmo's Grouchland has a better villain actor than this guy. Unless he was told tomake fun of all bad guys from children's shows, in that case he wasspot on.The plot was just the same as almost any plot dealing with computergenerated characters and the real world. It's always some busy citylike New York, it's always some family that's either having issues orotherwise has something wrong where, when the characters come, they areunable to handle it. Suddenly the general public is evil and hates thecharacters. Then in the end everyone is happy and somehow some fictional charactershave changed the life of that random family, and the villain gives upor something.Meh, the movie was okay graphically but it was mostly meh.

Hollywood, stop raping our childhood classics!

Clever producers and marketers have known it ever since: when in doubt, take some beloved children's comic-, cartoon- or toy-franchise and putthem into a 'hip' contemporary setting (that's NYC or Los Angeles toyou and me). This has worked many times before, having produced suchmonumental box-office hits like "Masters of the Universe", "TheNeverending Story 3" and the record-breaking "Howard the Duck". Not toforget that epic events when Jason went to New York or when Mr. Beanwent to Los Angeles. To paraphrase a currently fashionable comedian:all those films were "WINNING" … and so is "The Smurfs".Hollywood, we understand that a buck means more than anything to youbut please – pretty please – stop raping our childhood classics. Mr.Spielberg, if you happen to read this, please: "LEAVE TINTIN ALONE!" Soas to not let this review degenerate into a complete rant: the actingwas alright (for your average children's TV-show ala Sesame Street) andFrank Azaria, well, let's just say that I liked his various voices in"The Simpsons". The real problem is the Smurfs themselves, who seemsoul- and lifeless as, almost as if they had been created by acomputer. How would I grade this calculated, corporate train-wreck? Well, I'llgive it a finger but it certainly isn't the 'thumbs-up' one. Save a fewbucks, rent the Hanna-Barbera "Smurfs"-series or treat yourself withthe original, "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute".I'll be seeing you next year for the Hollywood remake of "Asterix theGaul". I'll let you in on a secret: Asterix and Obelix go through amystical time-gate and end up in New York, where they'll be playingGuitar Hero ™ with a former child-star – and it's in 3D! But all that'stop-secret inside information. Now excuse me, I'll have to go and passwater over the grave of Peyo.
