Let down.

I am the type that only goes to the movie theater when I feel that themove must be seen on the big screen. Action movies or movies withamazing scenery usually are the ones, like LOTR, since the theatercosts so much. Which is why I usually go see the Marvel films in thetheater. They are always fun, and seeing them on the big screen makesthem more fun. Thor...well. Not fun. Boring. Not enough action. Any"funny" or exciting part, I had already seen a hundred times in thetrailer. Anthony Hopkins may have been the only good thing about it,and that is just because he is Anthony Hopkins and he can do what hewants. Everything else, well, not so Marvelous.

It was all right

This movie was a movie i wasn't very exited to see, and Im 13 myself.Iwas fearful of a sloppy job in special effects and the possibility of apoor script. Some people thought that it was these things. I think theycould of done better on most but i think it was an adequate job ofportraying the comic book on the big screen. But truth be told I don'tthink, by comment of some of my buddies that they told the correctstory of Thor. As in the comic book didn't fit the story of the movie. But I really liked how they linked all the marvel movies that were partof the movies together. During Iron man to that S.E.I.L.D agent had toleave for important business in new Mexico, that was the Thor problem, also at the end of Iron man 2, tony stark was proposed to the avengersteam. At the end of the incredible hulk, tony stark asks hulk if hewants to be apart of the avengers team and i haven't yet seen CaptinAmerica. but all in all I think this movie is really meant for childrenand Adults who don't see many movies.

HE MAN of 2011

Kind of remind me of the movie Masters of the Universe in the late 80's with Dolph Lundgren as He Man and the lead star. I love both movies in their own style.

The only God of The Avengers

After seeing it in a Special Screening I only have to say it. Wow, Iwasn't expecting that, I knew that Kenneth Branagh is a great Directorbut the way that he translate the story and the comic into life wasmarvelous. The acting is good, the actors bring the characters to life, Hemsworthbrings an excellent Thor (maybe the wrestler fighter Triple H was abetter choice because has more the look of Nordic),with an splendidOdin(Hopkins) and a great Loki(Hiddleston). The only failure that I can find is the size of the hammer, if you haveseen the trailer you will know what I am saying, I think was too smallfor the size of Thor but besides that the movie is great. The 3D in this movie was good but sometimes is a bit unnecessary.8/10 for some dialogs and some excessive use of Special Effects.

Utter, utter tripe

Sorry, to all that have given this "movie" more than 1 out of 10. Thishas to be one of the most sorry excuses for a movie I've ever seen.Actually less interesting and more poorly written than Pokemon themovie and even that was a new low for me... It cost me £10.00 to seethis (I had my own 3d glasses)!!! I'm considering asking for a refund. What was the point of Natalie Portman or the other mortals presence andthe 5 minutes we spent in their company? This movie is nothing but a 2 and bit hour long trailer for theundoubted THOR 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 which will have all the drama andnormally good content that Marvel based movies have (I can only hope).More time is spent (nearly half) developing characters and giving usbackground information on how we've got to where we've got...ratherthan telling the story that we paid to see....There's no depth of character, (Anthony Hopkins was the best actor init and he spent most of his time in a coma, I'm guessing after he readthe script !), there's no plot other than arrogant son, exiled toearth. He spends 5 minutes (yes 5 !) not understanding anything that'sgoing on or how society works (despite him and his people being deifiedfor at least 2,000 years) and then gets sucked back to his own "realm",there's little in the way of good dialogue, the special effects are DrWho'esq and the 3D is forgettable. There's no menace from any of the baddies, his "bad" half / non brotherseems so nice that you think "ah it's all an act and something terribleis going to happen"... but no, he is quite a nice guy only reallydabbles with naughtiness.....This film was supposed to be in 3D yet I completely forgot that it wasafter the first 5 minutes and only at the end when I realised that Iwas wearing the stupid glasses did I remember!!In a time where we have transformers, X-Men and the like, the specialeffects were weak and pretty poor. There's no humour no camping it upto rescue it either. My worry is that if this is the best movie of the undoubted quadruologythat we're about to be subjected to, then God help us. I warn you we may have another Iron Man 2 (a movie I still haven't beenable to stay awake all the way through yet!!) or Spiderman (anythingother than 1) on our hands and can I bring myself to part with another£10 on the strength of that?... almost certainly not. This could and should have been great, it wasn't and I'm left feelingcheated ! Cre8.

Thor is full of thunder!

I just saw Thor today, and my first impression is that it's visuallyfantastic. The designers of Asgard (and the other extraterrestrialrealms) did a magnificent job. The actors were all a cut above yourtypical SF blockbuster, and perhaps the most understated but brilliantperformance came from Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin. Loki was a veryinteresting character, and instead of your stereotypical trickster,Loki actually had some depth to his character, and some very realissues. Rene Russo was a stealth goddess. I kept saying to myself"Where have I seen her before?" I was actually skeptical about Branaghdirecting, but he did an admirable job. Stellan Skarsgaard wasinteresting and subdued; he had one of the best lines: "I don't know ifyou're really the Thunder God, but if you're not, you should be!"**Edit** I agree with other reviewers about Idris Elba as Heimdall.Great character, and handled perfectly in character. A minor spoiler:Keep an eye out for the god of all gods, Stan Lee, making hisobligatory cameo as the driver of a pickup truck. Natalie Portman had aquiet dignity and made her role more interesting than "the earth bimbowho falls for the thunder god." It seems like Marvel is creating apantheon with Iron Man, The Hulk (not the Ang Lee version), and Thor.Next up: The Avengers! I don't want this to be long and windy: It's ahelluva fun movie, the script is intelligent, the artwork is excellent, and make sure you sit through the credits for the S.H.I.E.L.D. teaserat the end. YOU WILL HAVE FUN.

This is really two different movies hacked together.

This is really two different movies. The better movie featuring theexcellent actors, sets and special effects basically are entirely inAsgard. The lame movie features basically bad actors, (Gregg is OK) aboring set and no drama down on Earth. When Loki sends the attack to Earth--who really cares? There is no onein that sparsely - populated small town to be threatened. (It needs tobe set in a larger city.) The Earth-based story/dialogue is boring.(Compare how much good small talk/character development someone likeLawrence Kasdan could write into that space.) The love interest justfalls flat. When she is separated from Thor, no one really feels anyloss there. However, the acting and sets in Asgard are worth the price ofadmission. Hemsworth is perfect, although they should have written more"fish out of water" stuff for him. Worth a rent for the "good movie"alone.

THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY

Natalie Portman starts out the film as an astrophysicist in the New Mexico desert. There appears to be some kind of UFO crash, as apparently aliens have the ability to fly all over the planet without crashing, except New Mexico. The movie then flashes back to 985 AD in a heavily CG background as Asgard, led by Odin, aka Anthony Hopkins, is fighting the frost giants, who look like blue skinned versions of Freddie Kruger. They end up with a truce. During the coronation ceremony of Thor, a frost giant enters the realm of Asgard and disrupts the ceremony (why this was done at the time was a mystery). Thor in his passion leads a group of warriors to the planet of the frost giants to teach them a lesson. The simple touch of a frost giant freezes the skin like liquid nitrogen. This was great in 2D, I can only imagine what the CG graphics was like in 3D. Odin is upset with Thor and takes his hammer and powers. He banishes Thor who speeds to earth only to crash into Natalie Portman and company in the desert (beginning scene). A bad hammer pun and a taser later, Thor is on his way to medical. The hammer lands elsewhere in the desert and is lodged like the Sword in the Stone. A group of yokels gather to have a cook out and attempt to remove said hammer...until the FEDS show up. The film moves back and forth between events on earth and in Asgard, as Loki has assumed the throne of his ailing father. In order to convince the audience this is the real Thor, he speaks a Middle Earth style of English, making over frequent use of the word "realm." It works well as it allows him to flirt with Natalie Portman, who he thinks is the most clever person on the planet. (Isn't this one of the seven signs?) Perhaps the movie's biggest fault is that is attempts to link mythology, science fiction and science fact is such a way a 9 year old might buy it. Like good trekkies, Thor's friends come to earth to rescue him, because the needs of the one out weigh the needs of the many. They show up and are as conspicuous as Vikings in a credit card commercial. Memorable line: Stop! You are using unregistered weapons technology!" For me the story wasn't light enough. There were a few comic lines attempted to break up the seriousness of the film, but it needed more of them. I was hoping for something along the lines of Iron Man 1. Perhaps the worst I have seen Ms. Portman in a while was her parsed OMG line. Other than that one bad line, she was great. No sex, no nudity, no f-bombs. Safe for the kiddies. They should love it.

Thor rocks!

I always thought it impossible to make a good movie out of Thor.I am not saying that it is bad material, but getting Thor to work on the big screen without making him seem over the top, was never going to be easy. You have to give credit to Marvel for pulling it off. Chris Hemsworth is great as Thor, and the story is exciting and entertaining. However, it is in the humour stakes that Thor really delivers. The film is fun and often makes you laugh.Great entertainment.

Good film, but TOTALLY not HD through Instant Video

This review is from: Thor [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) Film is good. However, the "HD" version isn't at all HD. and yes, my setup has played HD video from amazon instant video in the past (breaking bad, etc).

Enjoyable diversion

This movie was enjoyable and even though there are those detractors out there, I had fun with it. If you haven't seen it, just remember that this is a norse god that was brought into a comic book universe and now is being translated to screen. I thought they did a good job with it, given the subject matter. Being a fan of the Avengers, I was really worried when I heard that they were going to do a Thor centered movie. There are just too many ways for it to go terribly wrong. In the end, it was a fun diversion and I don't think that anything was horribly flubbed. Not the best movie of the summer, or even the best super hero movie of the summer - fun nonetheless.

Slightly Above Thorrible

Hammer time will have to wait for The Avengers movie. This feature length version of Thor and his origins was only marginallybetter than Marvel's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,Spider-Man 3 and Daredevil. That's not saying much when you factor inthe better Marvel films: Spider-Man 1-2, Iron Man 1-2, X-Men 1, 2, 3and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Fantastic Four 1, Hulk and IncredibleHulk and Blade 1, 2, 3. Hmmm. Of the 18 Marvel movies (including Thor)I mentioned, that means, Thor ranks as 15/18.That's not good. Nevertheless, if you're slightly curious, or likeCGI-laced movies a lot more than I do, check it out. I wouldn't wastethe extra fee for 3D or IMAX, like I did unfortunately, but it'sharmless comic-book entertainment. And be forewarned: DO NOT STAYTHROUGH THE CREDITS for that extra teaser they've been known to getpeople hyped for The Avengers movie. At the end of this review, I willSPOIL IT to save you the extra time. Heck, the movie's too darned longanyways. The movie immediately begins with Academy Award Winner Natalie Portmanas Jane Foster who's studying with her colleagues in the New Mexicandesert and inadvertently runs into banished Thor (a gorgeous ChrisHemsworth – one of the few pluses of the movie). But wait! How did heget dropped into the desert?Well, thanks for asking. Over the next 45 minutes or so, you'll learnthe background story of Thor, his King Daddy Odin (Anthony Hopkins) andhis oh-so-mysterious brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston – one of the manynegatives of the movie.) They run the realm of the good guys, and theydon't like the ice baddies who want to make everything and everywherecold. Their leader must've lived in Phoenix, AZ at one point and forthat, we will take their side. The story appears on the surface as kind of complicated, but deeper,it's almost as basic as can be. Thor leads his misfit friends after theice giants and thus gets banished to Earth – full circle – and nowwe're back to Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman and her interest inalternative universes and of course, hunk of a man Thor, himself. He,however, is battling everyone to get his precious star-laced Hammerback. Unfortunately, he must learn to be humble to get it back..blahblah blah…I never bought his transformation, I just wish there weremore of super-powered Thor and the not "Oh, can't we all get along"idiot they put on the screen. The performances were okay. One in six jokes worked. The graphics weredecent – MUCH better than 2010's Clash of the Titans. The only thing Ilooked forward to, aside from seeing the breathtaking Chris Hemsworthon screen, was the never-ending The Avengers/S.H.I.E.L.D./othersuperheroes either seen or mentioned. There were a lot, but it waswelcomed as I was more interested in the "coming attractions" and lessinvolved with the actual film I was watching.Again, recommended for the curious, and not recommended for those fewthat are, to stay through the final credits.(And as promised, SPOILER, here's what you'll see after the seemingly15-minutes of credits… one of the scientists, Erik Selvig (StellanSkarsgard) who worked with Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman's Janeis invited into an underground bunker to meet with, yep, you guessedit: Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) again. Nicky wants to use this powercube, but doesn't understand it and Erik is mucho curious about ituntil…we find out he's Thor's evil brother Loki in disguise. Yawn. NOTWORTH IT. Couldn't you have shown Thor VS. (or at least, meets) Hulk?Or even Iron Man (in the suit) going at Thor? Sorry, I love Samuel L.Jackson as much as the next human, but enough. Give us something wehaven't seen.)Oh, and by the way, I hope someone had noticed the "Academy AwardWinner Natalie Portman" as sarcasm. And that's another discussion…

I found myself laughing, yet it isn't a comedy.

I enjoyed Iron Man, I found the two Hulk movies in 5 years laughablebut okay. I'm sorry but it's just hard to enjoy a movie with obviousCGI that looks completely unrealistic. So coming into Thor I had noexpectations. I knew going in that it and probably Captain America wereboth movies that were only produced to set up an Avengers movie. Whilewatching the movie I found myself laughing. Dialogue was completelypredictable as well as was everything else in the movie. There waslittle heart and no character depth. This movie had a good director, asuburb cast and obviously a large budget. There was no reason for it tohave been this bad other than the lack of a script. In my opinion it'sa thrown together, forced movie that never needed to be made. The onlyperk of this movie was a couple of good battle scenes. The best ofwhich started the movie off, which left the ending to be anti-climaticto say the least. I know a lot of people enjoyed this movie but I justcan't understand why. I blame everyone who signed up to do thispaycheck of a movie for it's existence.3 of 10 stars is a very fair rating in my opinion. If you like movieslike, Priest, Legion, Hulk, The Incredible Hulk, Jonah Hex etc... withlots of action and little else then you may like this movie. Otherwisesave your money.

Review

A truly excellent film, accompanied by a powerful story. Hugelyentertaining comic-book adventure that delivers pretty much everythingyou could want from a Thor movie, thanks to an outstanding script,note-flawless direction from Kenneth Branagh, a tremendous supportingcast and a charismatic, star-making central performance from ChrisHemsworth. The special effects are extraordinary and seemed extensivelyreal. In addition, the fight scenes are nicely handled and the visualeffects are impressive, especially in the Halls of Asgard. That said, while the post-production 3D has come out well unlike Clash of theTitans. What was even more interesting was too see how the god'stransformation from being an immortal into a mortal didn't change theperson who he was. The movie itself was entertaining with nice comedyand action. The actors did a good job in portraying the actors as trulyas possible. Kenneth Branagh did in amazing job in directing the film'splot. The character change of Thor was interesting. All together, thefilm amazed me and left me breathless. In short, Thor is a huge amountof fun and is easily the best superhero movie. Worth Watching!!

Just another CGI demo reel... "ohhh shiny!!"

I watched this film with absolutely no foreknowledge of what it wasabout other than the viking god of thunder. What I got was something Icould have sworn was directed by Michael Bey in the lack of qualitystorytelling, character development or acting. There was a great dealof CGI and very little else. The only thing which nearly held the filmtogether was a halfway decent story written (at least in part) by J.Michael Straczynski (BABYLON 5) but his writing was ruined by poordirecting, poor character development and poor acting. Yep, justanother CGI demo reel like 99% of everything else that has been shatout of Hollywood.

Thor $150 million

According to IMDb, this film cost $150 million to make, surely after 20years plus of CGI becoming and essential element of the film productionprocess surely these films could look as though they cost that muchmoney. There were elaborate cityscapes and tron line flashing bridges, thefailing of this film though is it looks cheap. The ice monster, isnothing spectacular.Like Flash Gordon (1980)it has enough action and OK actors to distractthe eye and mind from thinking wow this is a tatty looking film for themajority of the time. Seeing Ray Stephenson beard made me thinkdirector Kenneth Branagh wanted to cast Brian Blessed in the role andmake Thor his homage to Flash Gordon.Luckily I saw the film in 2D, and it was an enjoyable romp. Maybe thestereoscopic version added something to it for fans of 3D but I don'tthink I missed anything special in that department. The plot and background is bare bones, I suspect there are more than afew minutes of deleted scenes, the cinema patron will have to pay tosee or even an extended cut on DVD/BLu Ray Considering this film is setin the same universe as Iron Man,Hulk etc surely its time that peoplestarted to focus on the doppleganger of Stan Lee who regulalrly cropsup and can surely no longer be classed as cameo appearances.Stay patient enjoy the Foo Fighters closing tune, read the credits for5 minutes and the viewer will be rewarded

Don't exact much, then you will have a marvelous time

This one is a must watch. Had you ever thought that 'how a strong aweapon made from a dying star can be?'. Guess Not. I should suggest youto watch this in 3d graphics as it was meant for viewing. This is oneof the best Sci-fi movies i ever watched. My rating is, 1st-avatar,then "THOR" as 2nd. This one has adrenaline rushing action allthrough the movie and really good 3D graphics and the superb quality. It has got a great mixture of action, magic(the science not understoodto man "as the movie calls it"), and some mix of star-gate and theGreek mythology. So if you love star-gate or even you are a sci-filover and you liked "the lightening thief, then this is a must watchfor you.

A spectacular film that every superhero film should strive to be

Superhero films are pretty much guaranteed to make a killing at the boxoffice. It's mostly due to high anticipation, but also due to the factthat most studios seem to have been able to iron out the kinks over theyears which lead to most of these films doing their source materialjustice while also just being great films in general. It hasn't alwaysbeen that way though. Elektra and Punisher: War Zone practically bombedwhile films like X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverineresulted in more fans distancing themselves from the franchise ratherthan embracing it. With Marvel banking so much on The Avengers beingnot only a huge accumulation of characters that fans love but also anamazing assembly of talent, Thor is a film that pretty much had to begood to gain momentum for what was just over the horizon. Before I gaveup being a full-time comic book nerd, I never really thought much ofThor. So I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this. I wasn'toverly excited for the film even though it looked fairly incredible, but luckily Thor was able to offer a magnificent spectacle that allsuperhero films should strive to be.Thor still has that same atmosphere that any of the Marvel films sinceIron Man have had, but at the same time seems to offer something thatthose films couldn't. A lot of it probably has to do with Asgard. Thisheavenly realm is unlike anything you've ever seen before and thespecial effects in the film are done well enough to be equally asimpressive as Pandora in Avatar. Asgard is this spectacular kingdom inthe sky that is incredibly extravagant and painted with gold. It's justbreathtaking how well Thor was able to pull something like that off.The cast is really phenomenal, as well. Chris Hemsworth is a reallysolid choice for Thor. His height, his build, the way he carrieshimself, along with his facial expressions are just as vital to howThor is portrayed as his appearance and his dialogue. Hemsworth nailsit; all of it. Tom Hiddleston was also a scene stealer. Loki is a guyyou know is up to no good right from the start, but Hiddleston portrayshis underhanded deeds to perfection. Throw in the intensity he utilizesin the second half of the film and Loki turns out to be a villainyou're going to crave to see more of. Anthony Hopkins deserves amention, as well. Many of Hopkins' recent roles have been lacking thatspecial something that made many of his most popular roles so great. Hewas a fantastic choice for Odin though. He reminds you why youconsidered him so talented in the first place. The only nitpick I haveis that both Natalie Portman and Tadanobu Asano were a littledisappointing and I was expecting more from them. Portman doesn'treally do much besides look pretty and Tadanobu's Hogun just deserved alittle more screen time. I'm a huge fan of just about every TadanobuAsano film out there though, so that could just be the fanboy in metalking.Thor may be the loudest film I've ever seen in theaters. The film ismostly action to begin with, so it's guaranteed to be loud. But it justseemed louder than usual, especially any scene involving The Destroyer. That's not a bad thing; not at all. I'd rather have a film be too loudthan too quiet any day.Thor is an extravagant looking film dripping with spellbinding specialeffects, a fantastic cast overflowing with talent, and a captivatingstory that holds your interest from beginning to end. Thor has enoughcharacter development to introduce new characters while also leavingenough room to expand on their origins in the forthcoming sequelsyou'll be itching for by the time you see Thor swing Mjolnir for thelast time. The superhero spectacular also offers a fair amount of heartamongst its waves of depth while also delivering incredibly loud andexplosive action sequences. Words almost don't seem to do the filmjustice. Thor is imaginative, charming, and the definition of what anintroductory superhero film should be. It could arguably be the bestMarvel film to date.
