As the new world reveals its secrets and the Vikings confront their terrible and bloody fate, One Eye discovers his true self. |
We have taken some photos of "Valhalla Rising (HD)".
They represent actual movie quality.
Fairly accurate as far as tales go, Enslaving gladiators, betting, having a young slave boy caring for a dangerous man, his escape was classic. Coming across Christians Crusaders and joining them, they become lost and drifted into one of North Americas rivers, encountering Native Americans who hide and attack with range weapons, classic again, One-Eye understands they don't stand a chance of survival against a superior enemy, during the "HELL" sequence I can only conclude that the "drink" they imbibe in was probably a mixture of water, honey and magic mushrooms that would continue to grow in a container if it didn't get to hot or cold. Those mushrooms easily found on both continents. One-Eyes decision to sacrifice himself in the last sequence, also classic, so the Native Americans would allow the child to live since trying to fight them would have resulted in both their deaths. The boy either found a ride back home, or just survived on the coastline of North America. No real mystery to the story, just a bleak reminder that not everything was coming up roses during that time, it must of been during the middle crusades because of the "introduction" of Christianity, and the supersitions involved with both pagan and early christian folks. Not a bad story about a harsh time in history. Not a movie for those who "need" to be entertained. For those who need that, stick to those horrible feel good fantasy movies where the hero always wins.
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (Amazon Instant Video) It is amazing that so few noticed the connection between Odin and One Eye in the movie. Odin himself had only one eye. There is no way that the Danish director would not be aware of this reference. I think the movie is some sort of story about how the old Norse gods died.
Mads Mikkelson spends considerable time in the beginning of this filmon a leash, housed in a cage, wearing a hood, and topless. MerryChristmas ladies. This film is a combination of extraordinary fine artand action, with cinematography that captures each scene as if it wasmeant to be a photograph in an exhibit at the International Center forPhotography. Masterful editing switches between moody moments of calmand sudden and shocking violence. I found myself muttering "Madre DeDios" and I'm not even Catholic...or Spanish. The momentum of the filmnever lets up, mysteriously drawing us through the travels andinternal/external battles of the characters as they try to understandwhat is happening to them in this museum quality version of Lost.Seductive soundtrack, beautiful and rugged landscapes, and paranormalovertones encompass the plot in a tidy package that I couldn't breakaway from watching. And certain provocative scenes describing the creedof (newborn) Christianity were definite conversation starters...orkillers; depending on your point of view.
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (DVD) Really all I can say is wow. This movie is very moving, shot beautifully, and the small amount of speech is perfect for the movie. I would recommend this to any one, and it's a beautiful movie. The only issues I take with the movie are its timeline. Many sites say the setting is in 1000 A.D. Scotland. The Christian Scottish "Vikings" (ignoring the fact that by the time of the First Crusade, 1096-1099, the entirety of the British Isles were Christian, not Heathen), are going to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, and make remarks of their fathers going there and returning to tell of its beauty. The First Crusade was 1096-1099, and the Second Crusade timeline was 1145-1149. But, it's a very small time issue with me, so the movie still receives 4 stars.
It is really slow, unimaginably slow, with exception of a few bloodyscenes which I must say, apart from being the best part of the movie, were one of the best seen in the genre. Too bad they were just few. Thething is the director had in His hands a potentially great movie, butHis insisting of being artistic by all means is on the border ofstubbornness. The atmosphere will trap You building a high tension, but toward theend, not offering something more the tension will just leave Youdrained without any meaningful closure. The main character (well playedby the actor, without saying a word) in the end lefts unrevealed, whois He, where does He comes from, why doesn't He speaks... ask aquestion and for sure is not answered.
This movie seemed to have great potential. I sat waiting in anticipation for the entire length of the film. I was left sadly disappointed and distraught. Nothing ever happens in this movie. Ok something does happen...**SPOILER ALERT** everyone except the little boy dies. WTF.
A mythical story with a heart. The central character who is called one eye is kept as a primitive andunbeatable gladiator. He doesn't speak and while in captivity seems tobe biding his time, waiting patiently, just as the character "GenghisKhan" did in "Mongol" Creating in the character a sense of destiny, anabiding. In this story the character must also endure muchbrutalization of his captors who correctly fear him. The character doesnot seem innately brutal but brutalized. His early functionalrelationship with the small slave boy who is used to feed and care forhim and ensure that the bindings of the chains are secure, grows toshow the actual kindness and eventual sacrificial love of the maincharacter. One Eyes character also has a mythical facet. He is said to have beenbrought from somewhere over the sea, he is said to have been broughtfrom hell, and...he has all the earmarks of the One Eyed Nordic GodOdin, the All Father. After killing off his captors One Eye and his young companion andmouthpiece meet up with Scotsmen on their way to Jerusalem to fight theHoly War's. They are not sure whether to kill One Eye or not, but arewarned not to even attempt it by one who knows One Eyes record in handto hand battle. They eventually believe it is good to bring One Eye andhis young companion with them on their journey, telling One Eye that hewill absolve his sins and be able to meet his loved ones in the afterlife. They enter the boat and find themselves in a mercilessly endlessdoldrum and some hold One Eye as the cause of the "curse". There is anattempt to kill him which ends as expected and giving the crew a clearpicture of what the outcome of any further attempts on his life wouldbe. significantly at the end of the journey One Eye takes a cup anddips it into the water and begins to drink it, one of the thirsttormented crewmen begins to quietly cackle in evil glee at thismadness, but One Eye holds out the cup and the crewman drinks, saying"Its Fresh" How did One eye know this? I think he smelled the water. Ithink it is significant that this character is the first to drink thefresh water. They eventually do reach land but as it turns out not Jerusalem, Pre-European invasion America. This leads to further despair amongst thesurviving crew members. Having hoped for glory and riches and Jerusalemthe come upon something completely unknown to them. One of the crewmembers even calls it Hell ,blaming One Eye for bringing them to hisplace of origin. Much madness ensues and horror when they findthemselves attacked by the Natives. They seem completely incapable ofmaking any type of decision, having a horror of going back the way theyhad come on the ocean and terrified of this strange new land or "hell"as plainly some felt it to be. Eventually the men lose all hope andcast off all restraint becoming fools and monsters. One Eye bides histime perhaps hoping these people will come to their sense but when itbecomes apparent that none can or will lead, he tell them through theboy that the only way is through the forest. None will follow and so hegoes and the boy follows and eventually a few others follow, with allthe expected nay saying and whining that followers seem to be able tocontribute to their leaders. Coming to the end of the movie One Eye begins to communicate throughthe boy what he knows concerning their final outcomes, death for allbut the boy, who will build a boat and go "Home" Of course One Eye isonly truly heeded by the only true Christian, who bows his head insorrow but holds to his faith in God awaiting his death. One Eye andthe boy go forward leaving all to their separate endings. They comeeventually to the place where the boy will build his boat and go Homebut turning around find that a band of warriors are waiting for OneEye, he turns to look at the boy touches his arm , walks towards hisdeath dropping his weapons and coming finally to the center stands withhis head thrown back looking at the sky and is quickly killed by thewarriors who having finished turn to look at the boy who is looking onat the further and final brutalization of his father/companion, theslowly turn and walk back towards the woods leaving the boy to hisdestiny , to build his boat and go "Home".The Christian element within this movie holds a good gamut ofrepresentations, one who remains faithful with others who only followfor glory, and riches and others who follow because it is the thing todo at the time. The main character has a gift of site which adds to the mythical andotherworldly quality of the character, but he is altogether "here" andflesh and blood in the movie, expressing without words all the depthand range of emotion we all feel.I mark this movie as one of the most viscerally powerful and singularlyopen to interpretation movies I have ever seen.
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (DVD) Dark, violent and a great period piece; just what I wanted. I suspect, however, this movie will appeal to a limited audience. It's interesting to see the contrast between Europe and the "New World; dark and rainy versus bright and sunny - must be a message there. Arrived on time and in perfect condition.
Valhalla Rising is one of those films that you most likely will notfind another film like it. First of all, I understand the rating onhere, and some of the reviews. I could see going into this moviethinking you're going to get "300" but end up with a weird, trippymovie like this.Surprisingly to others, I take it, this movie is not filled with actionor even considered an action film. It's a movie that you need to reallythink about and focus in on. I have only seen it two times, but I feellike I fully understand the concept of it. It has many hints ofreligion, life, death, and what it means to be a human throughout theentire film. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a veryvisual, thought provoking film. I would stay away from it if you'relooking for an action film, you won't find much here, except a fewgraphic kills.
Okay, the movie was OK - nothing more than that. I liked theatmosphere, I liked the casting, but I was disappointed with the story.Summarized, no movie I'm going to see again. And I wait further for theperfect viking movie. I could have stopped my feedback at this time...but obviously I don't... The "making of" chapter on the Blu Rayreveals, I must say - by FAR the worst "behind the scene flick" ever! Here we meet assistant director telling her story - and giving theworlds worst job application in history. A lazy, constant smoking, constant complaining girl in her twenties, that I find hard to believeEVER will get work on a film set ever again. Watch it and understand.Mads Mikkelsen appeared to be plagued by the incredibly bothersomeassistant. I would give the film a strong 5, but ended at 4 afterseeing this terrible behind the scene flick. Sorry.
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (DVD) This film was very disappointing. The acting was not good-the main character never spoke at all-just sinster looks. The violence level was high and if you figured it out the story-line was not that bad-not good either.
"Valhalla Rising" is a strange movie that will split the audience intolovers and haters like you can see in the comments here. To me itsthese movies that are most interesting. If a movie goer sees a movielike this with breathtakingly beautiful and artistic cinematography ona low budget and still rates it with one or two stars, its either pureignorance or something was struck that resonated in a negative way.I already loved the previous movies of director Winding Refn but thisone goes into a totally different direction. Its hard to explain theplot because most of it happens in the viewers head. What you see ismostly mythological and religious symbolism all revolving around themain character "One eye". A warrior who fights with a raw power ofwhich we never know its human or not because he is mute and keeps thesame empty expression in his face throughout the movie (only in somescenes it seems like hints of a smile shine through). The movie starts with "One eye" held captive and has to fight battlesto the death in which he always prevails. This first part of the moviehas some raw violence in it and could be viewed as the "mostentertaining" part because after this "Valhalla Rising" turns into aslow moving journey to an unknown place with barely any dialog and adroning ambient soundtrack. Its hard to say what really happens in the several segments the movieis split into but the religious tone ("Hell", "Sacrifice") already showthis is not a movie on a more existential level. And as I am stilltrying to piece the impressions of "Valhalla Rising" together I findthat its a movie that sticks with you long after watching if you letyourself dive into the dense atmosphere. The imagery is stunningthroughout, the most simple shots like a close up of knifes beingwashed in a river look like a beautiful painting and the constantdifference between the beauty of the cinematography and the coldcolors, raw violence and the dark droning soundtrack are as captivatingas Mads MIkkelsen playing the cold expressionless "One Eye" like aforce of nature.I can't put my finger on what sucked me into this movie but "ValhallaRising" is an experience open minded movie fans should not miss and Iam looking forward to future projects from this promising director.
It made perfect sense that, after a string of Hollywood versions ofViking stories, ranging from various adaptations of Beowulf (an OldEnglish poem, but set in Scandinavia) to the sci- fi leanings ofOutlander, someone should do it "properly". Hence the highlyanticipated Valhalla Rising, directed by Danish prodigy Nicolas WindingRefn, of Pusher fame, and starring the leading man from the sametrilogy, former Bond villain Mads Mikkelsen. Oddly enough, the resultis quite disappointing and, shockingly, more Hollywood-like thanexpected.Filmed in Scotland (with all dialogue spoken in English, presumably toimprove international sales), the movie tells the story of One-Eye(Mikkelsen), a mute Viking warrior with supernatural strength who hasbeen kept prisoner by a nobleman for years. With the help of a boy(Maarten Stevenson), he escapes and heads out to the unknown, eventually running into a group of Christians traveling to the NewWorld. But what awaits them there? As the situation gets more perilous,One-Eye's role in the story becomes more ambiguous, as does that of theboy. As a summary, it's rather good, suggesting that Valhalla Rising is somesort of epic with religious connotations. Instead, it's a slow-moving,unfocused picture where very little actually happens: there areoccasional moments of strong violence (though less visceral thananticipated), but between those scenes we get chunks of plot that addup to pretty much nothing, with the second half in particularindicating that this is only half a film, with the rest of story stillwaiting to be told.On the plus side, Refn is an excellent visual storyteller, with his useof landscapes, mist and blood giving a pretty good sense of time andplace, and even without speaking Mikkelsen is predictably excellent.Shame that their on-screen reunion had to be this bland: with the rightscript (and perhaps with a little less Anglo-Saxon influence), ValhallaRising could have been the ultimate Viking extravaganza.
I totally disagree with all reviewers of this title, both positive andnegative ones. This is definitely not a masterpiece in disguise andneither a film that is supposed to be good but hard to get. It isavantgarde in its way of expressing it self. A style very much like theone you wouldn't be surprised to see a director like Lars Von trierexpressing himself in. I'm here referring to Antichrist especially. Theonly reason I'd give 4 stars for this film is for the superbphotography made here. The make up and the acting from Mikkelsen issimilarly well done but even this talent as well as the storytellingtalent of Refn is not enough to make it up for a script and a plot thathas absolutely no future at all. It is not finished! I simply love thesymbology of norse mythology and the mythical clash between the oldviking ways and then Christianity taking over. During the first 20minutes of the film I really look forward to an epic extravaganza ofstorytelling about "The one eyed", traditionally Odin, and his exploitsbut the symbology and the total lack of personal background and missionof the characters does that I remain unsatisfied and indifferenttowards the film. The Odin symbology and mythology is definitely nottold very well and, at best, very incohesive. Refn should, with hisrenomé, choose more carefully when he selects a script! It's not enoughto have Mads Mikkelsen bathe himself and others in blood to make a goodfilm. I'd prefer "Conan the barbarian" as a better b-rated movie anytime. If you want to see the film, wait till it arrives on a 5 dollarDVD at your local supermarket!
I wonder what Mads Mikkelsen really thought when he shot this movie. Nodialog, and mostly no acting either. In most scenes he just has tostand there. I wonder if he thought it was boring? Supposed to be anartistic take on a Viking action movie, I guess then artistic meansslow, almost painfully so, extended shots. It also means a lack of realstory, lack of an idea with any substance to it. Finally, artistic andentertaining seem to be mutually exclusive. I wonder why? Anyhow, bothgenre labels action and adventure is completely misleading.Valhalla Rising has nothing to do with Valhalla, and when I think aboutit, not much to do with Viking's either. According to trivia,writer/director Winding Refn admits that he has no interest in Vikings, but considers Valhalla Rising his favorite. Something doesn't add up,but then again, nothing does in this movie.Mikkelsen plays a warrior who escapes Scotland by boat heading toJerusalem. But the boat is surrounded by heavy fog and a long calm, many days without wind and the freshwater aboard is running low.Suddenly they reach land, but it is not the land they intended to goto.I wish I could say the problem is the weak story. But the problem isthat it got no story at all. The entire movie is totally pointless. Itcertainly isn't entertaining, and to me neither beautiful norinteresting, therefore not very artistic either. Or I just don't getit? To me it's a waste of time and a big waste of money. They couldhave been spent on somebody who really wanted to make a movie they wereinterested in. Winding Refn apparently isn't.Some have compared the story as an acid trip, and meant it in a goodway. Why a drug induced state of apathy is considered good or artisticis beyond me. This is the sort of statement that tries to dividesociety into small parts, were a small part, the artists shouldn't haveto follow the laws that the rest of us should. This worries and annoysme. To put it shortly, drugs are bad. So Valhalla Rising gives moviesthat really tries to be beautiful or take an artistic perspective a badname. It destroys for those who want to take it seriously. Finally, come to think of it, the one word that best describes themovie is lethargic.2/10
Valhalla Rising is a mood piece, first and foremost. The narrative islike an incorporeal creature comprised of primal metaphors swimmingjust beneath the surface of a cold, murky lake. With the artfulapplication of doom laden sound and stunning organic imagery, NicholasWinding Refn (the Director that brought us the very odd and engagingbiopic "Bronson") meditates on pure savagery in contrast to promise ofsalvation.Ambiguously taking place during the crusades, we are introduced to asilent warrior known only as "One Eye", who carries the war scar towarrant that title. His remaining eye communicates with haunted, calculating glares, while his body is mechanically poised for anyeventual violence. Mads Mikkelsen embodies this man gloriously, providing a muscular catalyst for the brooding nature of the soundtrackand claustrophobic landscapes. All we know of "One Eye" by way of thisstory is that he is held captive by a pagan tribe that exploits hisfighting abilities for profit. He is kept caged like an animal, andtreated with the same regard. When the opportunity finally presentsitself, he escapes with the first of many brutal displays that willhave the most jaded moviegoers squirming. The violence is frank, andunapologetic for the sake of accuracy.By default, "One Eye" becomes an unlikely guardian for a young boy whosurvives his ferocious escape. The boy follows "One Eye", who walkswith purpose despite having no where to go. They come across a haggardband of Viking Christian crusaders who lay down their swords and acceptthem into their camp. These Crusaders are on a mission to find the HolyLand and fight to claim it from the non-believers. Some of them areinterested in glory and riches, others are dedicated to plantingcrosses in service to their lord. There is no telling if "One Eye" comprehends their language orunderstands their intentions, but we get the impression he is aware ofhis own purpose. At one point a knight asks the boy of "One Eye's"origins, and the boy replies simply "He is from hell", a statement thatcould mean a few things; none of them good. While the crusaders appear largely uncertain of their fate, or theirbeliefs, "One Eye" remains unaffected and completely in his element. Ifa member of their party becomes too hysterical or aggressive, heeliminates them, as if they are "the weakest link" of a nightmarishvision quest through unexplored territory. This review may seem overly poetic and pretentious, but its a fittingway to present this particular film. Perhaps it could have beenthickened with more of a narrative, but then again, I don't presume itwould have improved upon what the film was trying to accomplish. Thereis no real beginning or end, there is only this short moment of ahistory most of us have forgotten, where instinct and capacity forviolence forged a man's destiny. The atmosphere, as Refn films it, isdrained of warm, inviting colors, and as grand as the vistas may be;the forested mountains and broad bodies of water, we feel imprisoned bythe ambient paranoia and uncertainty. This is why the film succeeds.Clarity is kept just out of reach, which brings us closer to thecharacters than we might suspect. Sometimes, if properly executed, afilm with very little dialogue can inspire important conversations.Valhalla Rising plays out like the fading memory of an old god, shrouded in the fog that separates the earth from other realms. If thatsounds like your cup of tea, then drink deeply and be viscerallyrewarded.
I was quite excited by the look of this film as I do think properViking based films are difficult to come by. Unfortunately this is notIt, after seeing the DVD case which depicts (in Britain any way)"One-Eye" standing holding a sword covered in blood and tattoos withhundreds of warriors behind him in a shield wall of sorts, this is myfirst complaint, this never happens, it gave the impression of being anEpic with a climactic battle at some point. Next complaint, the mainCharacter never speaks. This can work to great effect in some films,The Dollars trilogy for instance "Blondie" hardly says anything butmost films like that have a good story and development not a series ofmoody shots of scenery. Thirdly where are they supposed to be in thebeginning? If this is in Denmark or Sweden then they should hit Englandbefore America, if it is Norway then you are still more likely to getto England, Greenland or Iceland first and if this is Scotland orEngland, why the hell are the people called Vikings? (the Vikings hadbeen driven out of England by 954 AD, this film being set in 1000 AD Ibelieve). This brings me onto why are they referred to as Vikings atall? Vikings were Pagan Raiders that attacked coastal villages, theusual term for non-raider being Danes, Pagans or Norsemen. In additionto this why is the "great Viking vessel" a boat no bigger than a rubberdinghy manned by about 8 people? History rant over...There is practically no dialogue, no explanation, no characterdevelopment and barely any plot. It seems that this is what pretentiousarty types want however so if you like fine art and pretentious crap,go ahead but otherwise it's an hour and a half you'll never see again.
This review is from: Valhalla Rising (DVD) Ok, don't read this review unless you have already seen `Valhalla Rising'. Because a lot of people still don't seem to get it, here's a capsule explanation of exactly what happens in the film, from someone who examines evidence of crimes and from that puts together suspects' MOs, serial killer methodologies, etc:A mute slave, One Eye, is forced by his captors to fight. One day, he finds an old arrowhead by submerging himself in a waterpool located on some mountain upland, after having a dream about the event. Later, One Eye uses the arrowhead to free himself and kill his captors. From this, his mind forms an abstract construct about submersion in water giving him the key that unlocks his freedom. An unnamed slave boy accompanies the newly freed One Eye, and they encounter a group of Christian Scots-Gaelic warriors who are on their way to the Crusades. One Eye and the boy board the Christians' ship, and with them sail away into a dense sea fog that does not lift until they find their ship has somehow left the sea and floated inland along the course of an unnamed river. Their location is uncertain and soon becomes a point of contention among the travelers. In this unfamiliar land, One Eye and his companions encounter some signs of human habitation: raised wooden biers holding decayed corpses and tribal religious paraphernalia stand in a lightly wooded area. Pay attention here, and you can see near this location a waterpool or small pond with the trunk of a dead, sun-bleached tree rising out of the water, or from the shore. There is a scene where the group is approaching the biers, and the waterpool/tree is there between them and the biers; another waterpool/dead tree tableau can be seen briefly for a moment behind and to the right of the leader of the Christian warriors. One Eye somehow makes the connection that these waterpool/dead tree tableaus have spiritual significance to the land's native inhabitants, else they wouldn't have chosen to honor their dead in that place.Later, the leader of the Christian warriors, who was allowed to travel through the unnamed land unmolested up until that point, is shot dead with arrows while standing waist-deep in a small pond. Note: to his left stands a dead, sun-bleached tree rising out of the water. Was the warrior-leader shot for violating the native inhabitants' "holy ground" by standing in the pond?Recall the earlier scene in which all of the characters drink some unnamed psychoactive liquor from a carved wooden bottle, and then all proceed to succumb to various kinds of drug-induced mania and/or religious ecstasy on the shores of a still lagoon. After drinking, One Eye glances over his shoulder toward a distant rocky promontory, where the native inhabitants are presumed to be hiding and watching; One Eye does this to let them know he's aware they are there. Then, standing apart from the maddened, drug-dazed crowd, One Eye constructs a column-like structure of stones on a small islet near the shores of the lagoon. Note that when he begins this task, One Eye sets the first stone atop the stump of a dead tree. He is sending the watching tribesmen the message that he understands their religion: he knows what their holy places are, where spirits are presumed to dwell. And so One Eye himself constructs a new "holy place."At the end of the film, before One Eye is beaten to death, he envisions himself (his spirit?) walking into the waters of that lagoon where he built the stone column; then he (or his spirit) is submerged, the head disappearing under the water's surface, like he did near the beginning of the film when he found the arrowhead that eventually aided him in freeing himself. Only this time, the audience is supposed to surmise that the freedom One Eye seeks (and gets, through the death of his physical body) is spiritual freedom, as opposed to his physical freedom earlier. One Eye's physical body dies, and his spirit enters the waters of the lagoon where he built the "holy place" marker, to become one of the native inhabitants' gods.
This film has a very artistic touch to it, but the whole film feelsvery experimental. It's broken down into six chapters. The firstchapter was awesome, great violence, and cinematography, but the otherfive chapters are just nothing. It's not entertaining, but it's notincredibly boring. In the middle of the movie there is this scene thatis just random as Hell, and I guess it was trying to be very symbolicin a way, One Eye is stacking stones and one dudes digging in thewater, and there's this other guy rolling around in the mud, and thenanother guy comes up and just butt rapes him for no apparent reason.Other than the first chapter It's really just nothing you haven't seenbefore. SO if that's your thing watch it, if you like action moviesthen I'd say catch the first twenty minutes of it sometime.
When I looked at the poster for this movie I just knew it was a mustsee for me. I knew there was going to be some intense battle scenes, blood and all the guts I could stand. There was blood and guts just notto the extent that I was expecting. This movie was about a journey notjust fighting to the death. It struck me that there was not to muchtalking but more of a visual journey to be taken with One Eye. Thesectioning of the movie helped to keep the movie moving with the lackof talking thru the movie which helped me because for a while I wasconfused on what direction the movie was going. All and all I enjoyedthe movie because it gave me the opportunity to project the feelings Iwanted to on One Eye as to where he was going and what he wanted out ofhis journey.
