Hilarious!

One of the funniest movies of 1997, Vegas Vacation lives up to the high standard of comic relief expected from this ongoing series by National Lampoon. Although on the low end of hilarity when compared to Vacation, European Vacation, and Christmas Vacation, the film is nonetheless a non-stop, belly-laughing comedy in its own right. After all, how can we expect anything to live up to the genius of a perfect comedy like Christmas Vacation? Complete with a brand new set of children, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo once again form an onscreen comedy duo that is simply magical...When Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) gets a large bonus as a company reward for inventing a new food preservative, he and his wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) decide that the money would best be spent on a good old-fashioned family vacation. But when kids Rusty (Ethan Embry) and Audrey (Marisol Nichols) bicker over the destination, the only place that gets unanimous reviews from the family is a Las Vegas vacation. Flying to Vegas, the family experiences a series of pitfalls that threatens to tear them apart forever. Clark becomes a gambling addict (even gambling on rock-paper-scissors and a guy doing a "I'm thinking of a number between one and ten" routine at a low-rent casino), Ellen becomes the target of Wayne Newton's seduction, underage Rusty becomes a gambling superstar under the false identity of Nicholas Pappagiorgio, and Audrey tries her hand in exotic dancing after a rendezvous with her stripper cousin Vicki... Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) makes another show-stealing performance as the redneck, dumber-than-a-doorknob relative, and he shadows Clark around the casinos generously imbibing his beverage of choice - a thirty-ounce can of Busch Light. The funniest scenes in the film involve Eddie (as always) and his trailer trash family, now living in a trailer on a parcel of land Eddie purchased cheap because it's a burial ground for nuclear waste. And Rusty's various exploits under the alias of Nic Pappagiorgio are extremely amusing. Meeting up with a group of quasi-mafia, professional gamblers, Rusty enjoys the massages, comp suites, and various frills associated with the biggest names in the business. Vegas Vacation is just downright funny. If you liked the earlier films, don't miss this one...Continuing the stellar reputation of the Vacation film series, Vegas Vacation is pure entertainment fun from beginning to end. Chevy Chase is up to his usual antics, and Wayne Newton turns in a classic performance in his role as Griswold home-wrecker. Family friendly, Vegas Vacation is a comedy made for both parents and children alike. And its role as yet another show-stopper in the long-line of Griswold comedies makes Vegas Vacation a definite must-see... The DVD Report

ALL BETS ARE OFF

The "Vacation" franchise has had some hits and some misses, and this one falls into the latter categories. The Griswolds go off on a vacation in Las Vegas, and what happens there is so minimal it's a wonder why they even bothered to make a movie. Chevy Chase seems tired and weary as Clark, this time finding himself becoming a gambling addict particularly at the mercy of the blackjack dealer, a whimsical Wallace Shawn. Meanwhile, wife Beverly D'Angelo finds herself a wannabe companion for a quietly lecherous Wayne Newton and the kids go off in their own directions, the son becoming somewhat of a mini-Mafia man and daughter a caged dancer. Randy Quaid returns as redneck cousin Eddie, who has become so predictable his character is merely a caricature of himself. The movie struggles for its few laughs and is far beneath the manic silliness of the earlier Lampoon vacations.

Ranks high as a gut-grabbing comedy.

This movie is funny. My only complaint is that the film probably should havebeen rated PG-13 because of some sexual humor and language. I first saw thismovie way back in 1998. And even today, I still enjoy watching it. This filmis good for a laugh. One that you should watch if you should happen to takea trip to Vegas for the summer. Many Vegas acts are shown in this movie.Such as magic acts, a Wayne Newton act (he even has a part in the movie) anda large number of casinos and go-go dancers. This one is on my list. VEGASVACATION gets 4/5 from me and 2/5 from my retarded friend. So, compromisedrating= 3/5.VEGAS VACATION: 3/5.

It sounds like "banana"...

Chevy Chase still has some comedy left, but apparently this movie is the beginning of the twilight of that spark. There were certainly some alright parts with Wayne Newton trying to seduce Ellen, but it had a much more dry flow than European Vacation. If you are a Chevy Chase fan or liked the previous Griswald adventures, then this would be up your alley. But it isn't his best.

Hilarious

Vegas Vacation is a great movie. The lines are hilarious and it leaves my friends and I quoting it all the time. Every time I hear of Yuma, Arizona, or getting some "dam bait", it brings up memories of this great movie. It's just another comedic gem in the Lampoons series and it ranks up there with the other ones. Nothing makes it stand out in good or bad ways but it will make you laugh that's for sure. I own this movie and I don't regret spending a penny of the money I spent for it.

The movie that will keep you laughing.

This is a GOOD movie. My boyfriend just dies laughing everytime he sees it. This is a movie for all days of the year.

This one is just a good film not great but not bad either

I liked this movie but it's not as good or funny as theother 3.This one has them deciding to go to Las Vegaswhere Clark just gambles all his money and loses it and his family for awhile and Rusty decides to become MrPappageorgio and wins three cars and a hummer. Audreybecomes a dancer and Ellen has a thing for Wayne Newtonuugh! I give this 4 **** stars out of 5!!

Avoid it if you like "family films"

Blandness prevailed in this sequel without the sharp creative edge of John Hughes writing it. No nudity, swearing and a silly grade school pun about the Hoover Dam. In fact, climbing the Hoover Dam was one of the funniest scenes in the film (even if people could guess it was made with a cardboard cutout backdrop) and the plane scene resembled model seats in a room someplace instead of inside a plane. Ellen singing "Loving You" with Wayne Newton also grabbed some laughs. But it was funny in a sitcom and morality sort of way instead of the satire National Lampoon made famous in the three previous films.

good but not great

The movie to me was funny, but it was not as good as the first one

It's not the original, but the formula still works

Maybe I have a bias because I live and work in Las Vegas (vacationed here 5 times in 6 years before making the final move), but this Vacation movie does grow on you. A lot of the cheap shots they take at Vegas itself---i.e., the scortching weather, the exotic dancer business catering to young bimbos, the aggrandizing and self-indulgence of one Mr. Las Vegas himself, Wayne Newton---are funny sometimes because there is a little bit of truth to the zingers. Outside of the Vegas jokes, the Griswold clan is funny on its own. Led by the slapsticking Clarke Griswold (Chevy Chase), the family runs into spats of outrageous luck, and outrageous nonsense. They really should be the poster-child family for Las Vegas, because those dual qualities mirror the qualities of this unique American city. Beverly D'Angelo, playing Ellen Griswold, only seems to become more attractive. There's a clever cameo by the supermodel, (Christie Brinkley) who had her debut in the first Vacation movie, and it lets the audience know just how much time has passed since the film series began. Chevy Chase is predictable in his role as the well-meaning, and often clumsy father who only wants to give his family the perfect vacation experience. For Chase fans, this is the kind of movie you have come to expect from him (outside of those two Fletch efforts), and you will not be disappointed. I would buy this DVD and add it to my Vacation collection. It may not be as good as the first, but it is certainly better than the 2nd, and probably just a little less laugh-out-loud funny than the third, so-called Christmas Vacation.Enjoy!

You can't go wrong with this series

This is one of the least funny of the Vacation movies, but it's funnynonetheless. I love Chevy Chase, and this entire movie series is always ariot if you ask me. In this movie--Clark Griswold has made some extra cash at work, and hedecides to take his family to Vegas. The laughs begin even before theyarrive in the city, with Clark and Ellen getting totally drenched with bluetoilet water on the plane...at the hotel when the receptionist tells Clarkthey have a wonderful dry cleaning service, he replies with-'oh, it's just abirthmark." This starts the fun, and it never really stops until near theend of the film, which I think could have been done a lot better. Thismovie has an awesome cast, with the guy--I forget his name--from Can'tHardly Wait, and the gorgeous Marisol Nichols as Audrey--who happens to beone of my favorite actresses (she's also on Showtime's original series,Resurrection Blvd.) The movie brings back Quaid as cousin Eddy, and hiscrazy family, which includes his daughter who is a stripper. It's a greatmovie, and a perfect addition to the Vacation series. It might not be asfunny as the others in the series, but it's worth a watch.

Viva Le Chevy Chase !!!

Many a night I have found myself with nothing to do and decide to watchtheNational Lampoons series one more time........Vegas Vacation is the fourth installment about the Griswold clan. Headedbytheir always well-meaning father Clarke W. Griswold JR., they imbark onyetanother quest to achieve family unity. What the family don't know is thatClarke is on a mission to Vegas to gamble, or lose bigtime as it wouldbe. The plot is very simple, the characters are familiar, even cousin Eddiemakes an appearance. For all the fans of the National Lampoons series, Vegas Vacation stillgivesyou that funny feeling when you hear the "Holiday Road" theme song kick inwhen the movie starts.I find Vegas Vacation to be a fun-loving, at times, hilariously funnymovieabout your not so average American family.Chevy Chase is a LEGEND !!!

good movie, unrealistic, but aren't all vacations

This movie was very "fun" and for anyone who is crazy about Las Vegas it's great to watch. It was meant to be funny, it's not rocket science by any means and it is far fetched....but it's Chevy Chase acting the way h's supposed to on the Vacation movies. Everytime he gambles he loses all his money. His son keeps on winning car's his wife hang out with Wayne Nution, his daughter becomes a dancer.

Cheesy, but that's what Vegas is all about

I watch this movie every time it's on. Why? Plain & simple: for thecheese. This is such a cheesy film...who was expecting a cinematicclassic? My favorite parts are the scenes when Rusty & Audrey are off on their own.Who can't relate to going crazy dancing at a party, or living large whenyouhave a fake ID? (You haven't experienced life then! ;)If you're looking for a GOOD comedy movie, stay away from this. But ifyou're looking for a goofy, tongue-in-cheek movie, that can appeal to thecommon denominator, then watch it.

(2012-05-19 01:47)

The title says it all!

Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo as Clark and Ellen Griswold and their two children take another vacation. This time to beautiful Las Vegas,Nevada. No celebrity there is bigger than Wayne Newton who appears as himself in the film. The son manufactures a fake ID to gain entry into the Las Vegas casinos. But it didn't always work. He was evicted several times. Randy Quaid again supports Chase and D'Angelo as the brother of Clark or Ellen. We hear songs recorded by the late Dean Martin and the late Frank Sinatra. Martin and Sinatra were top performers in Vegas themselves. This film is for those who love to gamble and Nevada residents. I highly recommend this one.

4th of the series

This time around Clark takes his Fam to Las Vegas where Clark gets into agambling obsession, Ellen starts hanging out with Wayne Newton, Rusty sneaksinto casinos as Mr Pappajorgio, Audry starts hanging out with Cousin Vickiand becomes a dancer...I thought through out this movie that the charactershave changed Ellen just seemed alot different in vacation and christmas thenshe did in this one....I loved the part where Cousin Eddie sees Wayne Newtonhis face it was so funny...Christie Brinkley has a cameo in this one appearing as the griswolds aredriving to hoover dam and you also get to hear the Holiday Road song!Overall i give this movie 3 and a half stars ***1/2

Greg (2012-05-17 06:49)

it's vegas baby!!!

Vegas Vacation was very funny movie and the second best in the series. They finally found a Rusty and Audrey that weren't annoying unlike in the European Vacation. Chevy Chase was great, as usual. Also Cousin Eddie was really funny. Wayne Newton also appears in the movie as well. I recommend this. Go out and see it!!

The worst of the 'Vacation' series!

D- What an awful, awful movie! I could barely finish watching it. It waspainful to watch this movie, especially for me since I'm a fan of the'Vacation' series. This -- I am sorry to say -- made into my list of thetopten worst comedies.Same characters, same actors (except the kids) but a horrible result. Iwonder why that is? The direction? Probably. The only funny character wasUncle Eddie, although he's not AS funny as in the past Vacation movies, hestill lifts this disaster off the ground. There were many scenes that didn't make sense. Overall the acting wasreallybad (and I mean really really bad -again, comparing to the other Vacationmovies)! It was just a big disaster. Some situations reminded me of a BugsBunny cartoon, although this seemed to luck the humor a cartoonhas.I think I laughed no more than 2 times throughout the whole thing.StephenKessler made a disaster of what could have been another good addition totheVacation series.

Vegas Vacation was a flop compared to others

This was the worst vacation out of the four, simply because it wasnt national lampoons vacations. It wasnt a bad movie, just can not compare to christmas and the first vacation, those are classics and this is not. Still worthy to watch, but i would choose the first three over this any day.
