Grief sodden descent into muddy madness

Emmanuelle Beart looks as though she's been shooting heroin inpreparation for this picture, never have I seen her look so rough and Icouldn't stop thinking about the possibility of just that for theduration of the picture. Grief stricken she and husband Sewell set offon an ill fated descent into madness trying to find their lost son whoBeart believes she has seen on a piece of film at a charity fund raiserfor children affected by a tsunami which struck Thailand. That is thestory and by the time the couple are conned out of all their money andstranded in Burma Beart has cranked up her portrait of grief soddenmadness to the point where I just wanted to see her character die. Ifound it impossible to feel sympathy or her plight as the performancewas one of all consuming wretchedness, hence my thoughts turned to thepossibility of the actress being strung out on smack. I certainlywanted Sewell to cut his losses and leave her to her descent.Cinematography is intensely gloomy, submerged deeper by thecomplimentary soundtrack of far too obvious from the outset aconclusion in doom. The performances have nowhere to go it's alldownhill into a perverse Lord Of The Flies ending which is franklyrather kinky and perverse, especially as in the final scene Beart looksas though she's just popped into a beauty salon for a quick spruce up.The prior climactic scene is stolen from a much better 1970's Italianhorror with a similar theme. I'll let you the viewers discover whatthat might be called, but if you've seen it you'll know.

nightmare

Five stars for the reviews alone! The film is a terrific ink blot and the 24 previous reviews are great and say so much about the horror film fans community. Thanks. Right guys, this is not a horror film and that community is right to feel ripped off by the false advertising. On the other hand what do we call it. Drama? No, the acting is impressive by that standard but the dramatic tension in "will they find their kid" is very thin. Adventure? No, the setting combined with the photography are grippingly exotic, but "adventure" does not hit the mark. Artsy? -- not exactly. Psychodrama? Maybe sorta. Several viewers refer to Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now. Yes of course -- there is a slide into madness in a quite foreign "jungle" setting and these iconic stories come to mind. There is a further parallel with the film in that the American adventure in Vietnam had the feeling of a mad obsession and of slim chances of success, and the wife in Vinyan certainly had a mad obsession about finding her son and slim chances of success. It is mad and compulsive obsession that is horror in both films. Viewers complain that the actions of the couple do not make sense. Of course they do not, anymore than the actions in Apocalypse Now do because they are crazed. The husband in Vinyan is crazed by guilt and apparently a codependency with his wife and feels to some extent responsible for her madness and so gets sucked into it, leading to his own destruction. So there is the horror of being trapped in guilt and co-dependency, but this is certainly not the blood and sadism and surprising shocks (or not so surprising shocks that one likes to groan at) that horror fans have a perfect right to expect for their bucks. It would be like paying to bungee jump and instead being lowered in a basket. Yes, this is not an action film! It is a SLOW slide into more and more craziness. The slowness underscores the relentlessness of obsession, but does not make for exciting action. The ending has been given away over and over in the previous 24 reviews. But I think the richness of the nude mud scene has been missed. I did think when I watched it, this could not have been made for an American audience because many will be conditioned to focus on boys rubbing the body and breasts of a mature woman as pedophilia. Of course several in the comments to the reviews did just this. Sorry but this is crazy if you think about it. There is nothing to suggest that the adult/wife is sexually seducing the boys. There is certainly ambiguity in this scene but the possibility that is most obvious is that the "lost boys" are giggling with her because they have found a mother, and she is delighted and giggling because she has found sons. The pleasure looks most like the primal joy of mother and child in suckling and nurturing. I say primal because of course they are all quite crazy and they are not literally suckling. We are shown mother/infant body contact among mad people. One can wonder if when the boys get older they might gang-bang her. But that is not part of the film itself. I think all this is pretty straight forward. One could get Freudian I suppose and wonder if the boys are doing some Oedipal thing in killing their symbolic father and lusting after their symbolic mother. But I don't think viewers have to worry about this. I think the film is not that deep. It stands very well on its own as a well-acted and photographed dreamy portrayal of self-destructive obsession.PS -- Film production lovers. The extra feature that shows the problems of shooting so many difficult shots in the jungle, as well as in the streets and brothels, will make you appreciate this film as a technical achievement all the more.

Not one single redeeming factor except that it finished

Like others who registered simply to leave a review I too did the same.I just sat there incredulous that it was possible to raise the money tomake this abomination. I do not know where or how to berate this movieso lets start with some technical aspects.I see that they used film but the incompetence of the grading, developing, colourisation needs to be seen to be believed. It lookedlike they used digital cameras and then a really cheap grading systemto add grain. Sound was appallingly mixed, badly balanced and careless. It seems they had no access to ADR facilities or the main actorsrefused to be involved. Editing was sloppy and needs serious tighteningup. Direction was lacking in every way, it seems there was a shooting ratioof 1:1 so you got stuck with whatever you ended up on the first take. The characters were so badly portrayed I had no empathy or interestwhatsoever for them and the consequences of their actions. Talk aboutwooden I began to poke my screen. I am sure the actors do not talkabout this movie when people ask them what they have doneWhat the hell was going on with that on the side 'love interest? Wheredid that lead to ,why? Pointless. Who cares? The script and plot were laughable and incoherent leaving you withnothing. I am losing the will to live just thinking about the trite, inconsequential, schoolboy, badly thought out, improbable nature ofwhat I saw. As for the last scene my jaw hit the ground as I realised, yes they could reach depths that would top the previous drivel.Anyhow I have wasted enough time .I am rarely driven to write something like this so I guess that is somemeasure of success but I am furious to have wasted my precious timewatching this garbage. I am furious that this proves without a doubtraising money to make a film is nothing to do with the film and I amfurious that there must be so many other so much more worthwhile thingsthat are not being made. Are the people who put this together professionals? Have they madefilms before? Is this a rich kid trying something out? Anyhow the long and the short if it is watch paint dry instead, do notwaste your time with this film. Do not support this level ofincompetence in case they go on to make more. I am astounded that there are reviews that rate this movie highly, maybe there are two movies with the same name. I wish I could vote 0out of 10.

Vinyan

This review is from: Vinyan (DVD) It's just creepy. If you like creepy, this is a good one. The acting is very good and the story is well written. It is a very dark story.

for adventerous filmgoers only

If you need your movies to make perfect sense & get wrapped up with a pretty little bow at the end...than don't watch Vinyan. On the other hand, if you can enjoy ambiguity and mystery and believe that great films don't necessarily need to make sense as long as they FEEL right, then there is a lot to enjoy in this harrowing journey called Vinyan.Brilliant cinematography, sound design & editing really immerses the viewer in the foreign land of southeast Asia. And the two leads are outstanding as their characters enter their own Heart of Darkness. And Heart of Darkness if the best way to put it. The content may be quite different, but this film reminded me a lot of Apocalypse Now. Like some of the best films, there's a lot going on just under the surface here...comments on parenthood, tribal natures, and the relationships between the 1st and 3rd worlds. What exactly the film has to say is elusive...your fingertips can just barely clutch its meaning before it slips from your grasp. And so it demands repeated viewings, discussion and argument. This is what I think make a good film...if you do too, check out Vinyan.

A moving and immersive cinematic experience

Vinyan is a film by writer/Director Fabrice Du Welz who brought usCalvaire (The Ordeal). The French/Belgians have been bringing us a lotof gritty, uncompromising horror in recent years and I heard a lotabout Calvaire. When I first saw it I thought it was gripping but wasinitially disappointed when it turned into a rather oddball movie thatwasn't exactly scary, but I don't think it was really intended to be.Still it was clear Fabrice Du Welz had talent so I checked out hislatest movie Vinyan (which is English language set in Thailand) and iteasily surpassed my expectations; however, this is one is guaranteed todivide it's audience and one look at IMDb confirms this ( the typical"worst movie I've ever seen", "give me two hours of my life back" blahblah blah by people who's idea of a good movie is Transformers 2.) The basic plot: "A couple are looking for their child who was lost inthe tsunami - their search takes them to the dangerous Thai-Burmesewaters, and then into the jungle, where they face unknown buthorrifying dangers." Like Calvaire, Vinyan is not a standard horror movie, and, mostcertainly isn't typical of most modern horror with fast cuts, loudnoises and scares every two minutes. This is a slow burning epic pieceof film-making and one of the most immersive pictures I've ever seen. Ifelt like I was there in Thailand after the tsunami searching for thecouples' missing son and it was difficult not to feel for them, particularly the mother who refused to give up and was a wreck. The slow pace will lose people with short attention spans and thereisn't really much in the way of horror until near the end but I didn'tmind at all as it was such a strange and beautifully shot piece. Peoplewill question whether this is a horror movie at all but I don't see whythat matters; it perhaps has more in common with David Lynch movies,Apocalypse Now and Art house cinema than modern horror but I found itmore disturbing than most recent horror releases. It was a realexperience and I highly recommend it, just not to everyone.

I hated it.

Vinyan starts during a fund raising party for Burmese children asJeanne Bellmer (Emmanuelle Béart) watches a DVD, her own son Josh ismissing presumed dead but Jeanne sees a boy on the DVD from a Burmesevillage that she believes is Josh. At first her husband & Josh's fatherPaul (Rufus Sewell) isn't as convinced but Jeanne manges to persuadePaul to stump up the cash to illegally travel into the war torn Burma &search for the boy on the DVD who Jeanne is absolutely convinced is hermissing son Josh. Once in the harsh Burmese jungle, alone, miles fromcivilisation & at the mercy of whatever lies out there Jeanne & Paulsearch for their missing son will continue even if it kills them whichit may just do...This French, Belgium, British & Australian co-production was written &directed by Fanbrice Du Welz & seems to be getting rave reviews, unfortunately for me Vinyan was a boring & throughly depressing way towaste 92 minutes. In one way it's quite surprising that Vinyan is beingmarketed as a horror film since it's not while in another way it's noless than I expect as I am sure the studio felt Vinyan would becommercially more successful marketed as a horror film rather than ableak, dull slow moving drama. In fact I can quite safely say there isno fantasy horror in Vinyan at all & the only horror here are thehorrors of real life, extreme grief, guilt & desperation being at theforefront although the horrors of a war ravaged nation, the childrenwho have suffered because of it & the way people will take advantage ofother's suffering & problems also get a good airing. I was expecting ahorror film when I sat down to watch Vinyan, but once it became clearthat it wasn't the sort of fictional fantasy horror that I enjoy I wasmore than prepared to get it chance in it's own right as a seriousdrama but I just didn't like it. One big problem was the two main leadcharacter's who are just so unlikable, especially Jeanne who isobsessed with find Josh & so cares about nothing else, even the life ofher husband. The script doesn't offer enough reason for us, theaudience, to like this couple so when all the dark, depressing, bleak &nasty stuff starts to happen I didn't car one way or the other & infact I wanted even nastier things to happen to Jeanne in particular.Jeanne's breakdown into utter madness also bothered me, it was just toofast without enough reason. I'm not really sure what Vinyan is tryingto say or who it's meant to be saying it to, the ending in particularis odd & I was left asking why did the kids kill Paul but not Jeanne? They can't have known anything about them, it just seemed rather randomto me & yet another bleak, depressing moment that ends the film on adownbeat vibe.To give Vinyan some credit it does look very nice, the Thai junglelocations look great & very lush with beams of light, swirls of mist &dark shadows making up a very textured film. There's little to no gore,a man has his guts ripped out at the end & a man's dead body is seenbut otherwise there's nothing here. Again I have to stress Vinyan isnot a horror film & therefore isn't scary in the slightest & as far asI could tell doesn't even try to be.Filmed in Bangkok in Thailand this is well made with nice visuals &good production values & if you can get into the nihilistic & dullstory then it looks pretty too. The acting is alright, I have to say Ididn't like or emphasise with anyone & that made it hard for me to careabout anything that was happening.Vinyan is a film I had no fun watching at all, if you can get into thevery bleak story & can bear the unlikable character's then I am sureyou will like it more than me but anyone looking to kill an hour & ahalf with an entertaining horror film will not find it here. Didn't doa thing for me expect bore & depress me, not what I want to feel whilewatching a film.

Trip into the heart of darkness needs to be taken on its own terms to work. As it is its an eerie uneven tale

Couple who lost their son in the tsunami in the Thailand are shocked todiscover a figure that might be their son in video footage taken by areporter deep in the jungle. Biting the bullet and wanting to find outfor sure the couple heads into the jungle and their own heart ofdarkness. Dark brooding film is very much like the Joseph Conrad storythat inspired Apocalypse Now. This is a story that takes the couple notonly into the mysteries of the jungle but the mysteries of themselves.Nominally a horror film (the vinyan of the title are evil spirits) thefilm is actually something much different. Its a brooding meditation onlove, loss and other things. Its a film filled with dread anduncertainty and an eerieness thats hard to shake. I was expecting ahorror film of typical sort and instead I found a puzzle that I'm goingto have to attempt again. I'm not sure what I really make of the film.Certainly the film is one of the most oppressively beautiful ones I'veseen. The jungle is clearly the third lead character since it is inalmost every frame of the film. The look of the film will haunt you. Atthe same time I kind of suspected where the film was going. Its a filmthat echoes other films (who's names I won't mention because that mightreveal too much) which isn't to say that there is a problem with that, only that you may know what may lay at the end (which is what it has tobe). I like the film, but at the same time I know I have to see itagain because it was so not what I was expecting that I know itinterfered with my feelings for it. Worth a look for those wanting offbeat psychological horror.

Vinlandr (2012-05-18 00:51)

disappointing doesn't even begin to describe this movie

I was in the video store and saw this movie, read the synopsis on theback and thought it'd be pretty good. Nope.It had such great potential and such a great idea in terms of story, but for some reason the script just never delivered, and the last 30minutes leaves you wondering: "why after all they went through, didthis sh*t happen?" The acting wasn't terrible, and the way it wasfilmed wasn't bad either, though with this story they could have madethings a little bleaker. If you do want to watch it, make sure you get something else to watchtoo because you'll be left feeling baffled, unfulfilled and wanting towatch something that wasn't a waste of an hour and a half.

Intriguing

I can't recall the last movie I saw that I had to see immediatelyagain. Vinyan is one. I liked the literal stripping away ofpersonalities and identities, layer by layer, that occupied most ofthis movie. I could quibble with points raised by other reviewers butthat would take away from the movie. This couple lost their son to theTsunami in 2004 then, on a chance 'sighting' by the mother in a film, began their trek to oblivion. First they lost materialistic trappings -money and possessions. Then they lost their safety and way of evadingtheir descent (the boat). Then the guide was gone. Then love was takenaway. Then the most personal of possessions of the mother was taken(her purse). Finally her husband. Then her civilization andself-respect. It was an amazing film and one I will keep.I have added this part in 2/10. My movie jacket has "Some of thespookiest jungle cinematography this side of Apocalypse Now." So thereis nothing about horror in that wording. The reverse says "When someonedies a horrible death, etc" Now the noun horrible is used as an adverb, but that should not mean this movie should be put in the horror genre.

The perfect film for pretentious film snobs!

This film is a perfect example of why IMDb is so flawed. The majorityof voters give this film low marks, only for a few to give it acompletely bloated 10 and thus distort the overall score! "So looking at IMDb, I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the reviews thisfilm received. This is one of the the most eerie, spooky and disturbingfilms i've seen in a long time. I loved it, but then again i considermyself more cinematically knowledgeable than most. This is an ART FILM,and lacking a mainstream Hollywood style storyline is why i think ithas received such poor reviews on IMDb...by people that don't knowanything about what good cinema is." My god what a pompous man! I consider myself pretty well educated, butdon't think an education or cinematic knowledge has anything to do withunderstanding what makes a good film, let alone how to enjoy one! What DOESN'T make a good film is endless shots of the two antagonists(I refer to them as such because of their infuriating, illogicalactions. Surreal drama or not, a couple of amoebas would have moresense!) travelling from one location to another, all the while lookingforlorn. I understand that they are meant to be in despair over theloss of their son, but we don't need to see endless shots of Beart toknow she's sad, however pretty she is.Also, people congratulating the cinematographer is kinda like someonegetting praise for taking a few phone shots of heaven! Thailand andBurma are naturally beautiful places, and it doesn't take much to getthat across.I was aware that this wasn't a horror/thriller when I got it, but evenusing the description drama would be erroneous; there is simply noreason to watch this film other than to see if it's really as barrenand emotionally dead as you suspect when you see the first few minutes.I enjoy surreal films when the director knows what they're doing andcan evoke their ideas properly, but flotsam like this is just thedirector throwing a few bare ideas and suggestions on screen and hopingsome art-house snobs will take the bait and pretend it's a deeplymeaningful 'expeience'.Argh! Whether you like psychological dramas or thrillers, STAY AWAYFROM THIS FILM, especially if you have an allergy to pretentious crap.

Best; Most terrifying movie I have seen....

This is my first post on IMDb, and I had to register just to leave mycomment on coming from seeing this movie. I just got back from seeingit 25mins ago and in the end I was...let me say...just left sitting inmy seat with shock and awe. I, like many of the other posters here, hadnever seen a trailer of this movie and only knew it had something to dowith abductions, and outright horror, so I had to see it. I am a majormovie goer and see almost everything that comes out, and this movie byfar....takes the prize for utter shock and horror that leaves youmotionless in your seat from the moment the movie begins....This is based on a true story and in many ways, it needed to be told.Although, if you're an educated person, you would know the woman'sbattle in the far east (and of course, right here on our main landsometimes too) but the way director Peitre Nowrasteh presents thematerial is terrifying. Getting the viewer's attention is the easiesttask when performing such an act of honesty and raw natural spiritdemonstrated by Emmanuelle Béart and Brutto Marno. Those two arebrilliant in their respective roles. The film is gripping and intense with a heart-wrenching third act butit's so vicious, you might need to disengage from the cinematicexperience just give yourself a dose of reality, whatever your realitymay be. Emmanuelle Béart Aghdashi heads up this tragic and ferociousfilm. This is a MUST see for anyone that doesn't mind "Fiction+RealityShock" ...must I say more, just please go see the film, it is a TRUEclassic of unadulterated horror, much props to the director and allcast who played in this unbelievable (horror) film!

Vin*YAWN* is more like it!

This review is from: Vinyan (DVD) Allow me to save several of you some time right off the bat by warning that if you're on the hunt for a legitimate horror movie-- look elsewhere immediately. Vinyan is a plodding and artistic drama about loss, regret, and... well, whatever you want to categorize the finale as(revenge maybe?), but it's NOT horror. It's well made, with some gloomy atmosphere and excellent cinematography, even a few(and by few I mean EXACTLY 3) creepy moments, but it's NOT horror. The story follows a pair of grieving parents on the hunt for the son they lost 6 months prior to a tsunami in Thailand. To do this they enlist the help of a criminal, who for 1.5 million, guarantee's he can find they're son. From this point forward they travel to various secluded jungle locations while continually being monetarily sucked dry. The bleak ending is shocking only to those that actually think travelling to remote foreign islands with criminals is a "great idea." It may seem at this point that my low rating for Vinyan is due to the disappointment of it being something other than I expected... but actually, even reviewed as a drama it left much to be desired(unless you're fellow reviewer Christopher Blackshere of course LOL!). Again, technically the movie is more than sound, with solid acting throughout-- just know what it is going in: NOT horror(I can't be the only one who felt it was marketed as one right?)!

It's crap

I never thought I'd find a movie as bad as Wolf creek. This is it. It'sslow, boring, mundane and a waste of good talent.I can't really think of10 lines to waste on this movie but here goes. The story is choppy andit looks like it was made up as they went.Obviously a very low budgetflick that began with a premise of trying to make an artsy fartsiefilm. It's much more fartsie than artsy. Agreed there is some beautifulscenery but there is absolutely no point to the storyline.you sit thereyawning and pushing the fast forward button until you think it might bea good bit but nope...not gonna happen. If you must watch it,thendownload it because it's not worth buying. Maybe get the blue-rayversion and snatch some stills to print out and hang on the wall. That'sall it's good for.

An unusual human story

This review is from: Vinyan (DVD) I find this Thailand story with horror sidelooks well worth my time. It's not a great movie, but it has a feeling you don't find every day.

trashgang (2012-05-06 03:35)

the movie needs it's atmosphere

Fabrice Du Welz is that kind of director who doesn't make a film everyyear. The best known so far directed by him was Calvaire (2004). Ahorror that really took you by the throat. Vinyan was his follow-upmade 4 years later. It's a complete other flick, still, it deliverssome dark moments. People are arguing about it in what genre you wouldclassify it, sure, it's a drama but the overall atmosphere gives it ahorror feeling too. Towards the end it do goes darker and darker andonce the children take over the jungle it surely reminded me ofChildren Of The Corn. As I said, it's the atmosphere that defines this flick. The openingsequence already gives you the feeling what you will get. And i meanbefore Jeanne Bellmer (Emmanuelle Béart) comes out of the water. Theacting by her and Rufus Sewell is excellent. The score used is creepytoo and adds toward the atmosphere. It isn't arty but it leans againstit. The director surely knew what he wanted. The drama lays in the fact that Jeanne has lost her child and wants tofind him back against all the negative advise. So she travels with herhusband to the country she's thinking they could find him, but theyneed help from the locals, but the deeper they go in the woods theworser it gets. The horror lays in the fact that once they are deep inthe wood and are depending on some guys money takes over and people aredying for it. Naturally the locals doesn't like what's going on and areout for revenge. It's low on blood but the last scene is worthwatching.Excellent performances, great camera-work, good score, that's whatmakes it a special experience to watch. And for those who want to seeEmmanuelle Béart in her nudies, she goes full frontal. Gore 1/5 Nudity 1,5/5 Effects 2/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5

One Of The Top 5 Films Screened At TIFF '08!!

So looking at IMDb, I'm absolutely flabbergasted by the reviews thisfilm received. As far as i'm concerned this is ONE OF THE TOP 5 FILMSSCREENED AT TIFF 2008. This is one of the the most eerie, spooky anddisturbing films i've seen in a long time. I loved it, but then again iconsider myself more cinematically knowledgeable than most. This is anART FILM, and lacking a mainstream Hollywood style storyline is why ithink it has received such poor reviews on IMDb...by people that don'tknow anything about what good cinema is.The film follows Jeanne (Emmanuelle Beart) and her husband Paul (RufusSewell), a wealthy couple living in Thailand who have lost their youngson Joshua in a Tsunami that had hit the island. When one of theirfriends, Kim, shows a video of orphaned children living in the junglesof Burma with hopes of securing funds to send them humanitarian aid,Jeanne spots a boy wearing a Manchester United sweater and swears thatit is her son. This throws her into a psychosis and she becomes hellbent on finding a way into Burma to seek out her lost child. Kim tellsthem of a man named Thaksin Gao that smuggles people in and out ofBurma for a hefty price. At first they cannot find him, but trust ayoung Thai man that says he can get them into the isolated country.Eventually they are led to Thaksin Gao who takes them deep into thejungles along the coast of Burma, to small villages where smallchildren are used as currency. The first village they get to tries topawn off a small Burmese boy as their son, but Paul wasn't falling forit. As they get deeper and deeper into the jungles of Burma, bothmembers of the couple delve into even more fragile states of mind, bordering on mental breakdowns (in fact i think you could say that bothdo have mental breakdowns)... And what follows is not onlyunpredictable, but absolutely terrifying. This is one the most eerie, spooky and disturbing films i have seen ina long time: probably THE MOST SPOOKY FILM OF 2008. (I highly recommendNOT reading synopses of this film, because on IMDb and even on the backof the DVD it contains spoilers, I've left these out as I feel it willmake the film much more enjoyable!) Beart, Sewell and the Thai actorplaying Thaksin Gao do an absolutely incredible job, and the twoleading actors' portrayal of a couple in a state of deterioratingmental fragility is pretty incredible: TOP NOTCH ACTING. The actingcomes second only to the ABSOLUTELY STUNNING AND EERIE JUNGLECINEMATOGRAPHY of which the film consists. This, when combined with theutter unpredictability of the plot, makes for one helluva film. I lovedit, and highly recommend seeing it. One of the top 5 films screened atTIFF in my opinion!!! Hope you guys like it as much as i did!

Don't waste your time!!!!

The movie actually could have been really good. That is what kept mewatching it till the end. The movie starts off good but in the end youfind yourself wondering WTF. The movie is listed as a horror. I don'tknow maybe I am numb to horror movies, but I didn't find anything scaryabout this movie what so ever. At times the movie can be a littlecreepy, but by no means scary. There are a lot of drawn out parts ofthe movie where they appear to be just wasting your time with pointlessmundane footage. I found myself fast forwarding though parts to get onwith the movie, which I Never do. All in all the movie is kinda like myreview. It could of been summed up in a couple sentences, but because Ineeded 10 lines in my comments I made my review longer. Good news is ifyou took the time to read my review you won't have to "waste your time"watching the movie. :)

Darren Stewart (2012-05-02 09:16)

hmmmmm .......

really, really bad. Characters extract no empathy, sub-plots and arcsappear utterly irrelevant and the ending, oh my God, the ending. I wontsay too much as this might spoil things for those with the stamina tostay for the duration but I am sure the young teenage lads werefighting for prime position. The whole thing was a complete waste oftime and probably one of the all time worst films I have ever seen. Mywife, who is prone to falling asleep when films don't grab herattention, stayed awake because she could not believe how bad it was.I know there will be the "arty" types who will post comments about howhaunting it was and how any contrary comment comes from the Philistinesamongst us but please, please, avoid this film if you value your time.It was and is, absolute tosh.

*SPOILERS* a film like this is BOUND to get some horrible reviews. ithink one has to grasp the concept of a story. in a story there isprotagonist, (or in this case, protagonists). the protagonistexperiences trials and conflicts, and in the end the story shows howthe protagonist was changed by their experiences. the same peopleprobably trashed the unforgettable and haunting Eyes Wide Shut: and imust say yeah, i was left wanting more with the weird mysteries in thatfilm, but it wasn't about a strange cult, it was about theprotagonists.. and for me, one of a simple mind, vinyan was even moreaccessible than eyes wide shut. i could catch every aspect offoreshadowing and symbolism, and yet was still surprised. vinyan wasbeautifully and masterfully directed, and although i wasn't exactlyshocked by the ending, (i never expected them to find anything butmadness) i was definitely blown away and creeped out by the finale. idon't know what kind of an ending those who trashed this movie wereexpecting. i think the end made perfect sense and tied in perfectlywith the feelings of guilt, blame, unfaithfulness, and desperation thatthe protagonists were experiencing throughout the entire film. forthose looking for a horror film, in MY OPINION this movie was perfect.whats more horrific than LOSING YOUR ONLY CHILD, then losing yourminds?! this was edge of your seat stuff for me, with a sick feeling atthe end. my kind of movie! it wasn't The Tenant, but pretty greatstuff.
