"When in Rome" lowers romantic comedy standard

"When in Rome" at first glance appears to be your standard romanticcomedy, but it's actually worse than that.I like romantic comedies which have a real-factor to it - that there'sa chance that this could happen. But this film is completelyridiculous, and not in a funny way. They appeared to be going for the laughs more than the romance. The"real" relationship wasn't built up at all so we didn't get to feel anyof the love. On top of that, the comedy wasn't even done well. Thetiming was off, so even half-decent jokes weren't funny. It seemed thatall the jokes were written in just to cover up sloppy writing. All ofthe so-called "twists" and "turns" were lame and seemed to be added atthe last minute to overcome a bad plot idea.I usually find romantic comedies to be harmless fun, but "When in Rome"actually angered me it was so poorly written. It gives the genre a badname.

I loved it.

This movie delivered everything i was hoping. It's definitely a family film with no foul language or nudity. Most movies i have to fast forward since watching movies is a family thing for us. This movie was fun to watch completely clean and has great comedy.

When In Rome

I would NEVER recommend this DVD-- I wasted my money on it. I would say... "Don't waste your money" -- I fell asleep when it was on because it was so boring and no meaning

Excellent stuff!

I enjoyed every minute of this movie! I recommend this movie foreveryone out there! It's hilarious and extremely entertaining from theminute you start watching it, and all the way to the end.Kristen Bell is super attractive and plays the role as "Beth" superbly- I mean WOW! She goes all the way from being a detective in "VeronicaMars", to an art curator in this movie. This girl is a pure pleasure towatch on screen, and I would love to see more of her in the future -especially in movies like this, romantic comedies.I love how they put magic (I mean actual real magic) into the wholeconcept. It gives everything kind of a twist, and doesn't make it aboring cliché romantic comedy. All in all - Superb movie!

Pretty Funny!!!

This movie was better than I expected, and was quite funny. KristenBell stars as a single art curator named Beth, who can't seem to findher true love. While attending her sister's wedding in Rome, she meetsNicholas Beamon, who is very sweet and very clumsy. When she sees himkissing another woman, who happens to be the groom's cousin; she getsdrunk and steals coins from the fountain of love. (According to legend,if you take coins from the fountain, the owner of the coin will fall inlove with whoever took the coin) When she gets back to New York, Lancea magician, Gale, Antonio, and Al follow her around and confess theirlove to her. In order for this to stop, she must return the coins totheir owners, and see if Nicholas was the one who truly loved her. Ihighly recommend WHEN IN ROME!!!

Very lightweight rom-com concerning the magic of the fountain in Rome.

Kristen Bell is Beth, young, bright, hard-working curator at theGuggenheim in NYC. With a big exhibition coming up, and a key artworkstill needing to be procured, she gets unexpected news ... her youngersister (cute Alexis Dziena as Joan) is in Rome, she has met an Italian, fell in love, and is getting married presently after a 2-weekcourtship.So naturally she goes to Rome, and there she runs into Josh Duhamel asNick, and they seem to hit it off. But in a related scene, we find Bethsitting on the edge of the fountain, the one where people throw in acoin for good luck in love. And for some reason she decides to pick outand take several with her, including one poker chip. When she gets back to NYC, she suddenly starts to get calls from menshe doesn't even know. And also from Nick. But over the phone hersister tells her that according to Italian legend, the men who hadthrown those particular coins in would now be unavoidably attracted toher, profess their love, want to marry her. And, since Nick is a pokerplayer, has poker chips in his apartment, she quickly figures out thatNick's apparent attraction to her is because she removed his "coin"from the fountain. All this sets up the rom-com elements that follow. Anjelica Huston isCeleste, the hard-driving, demanding boss at the Guggenheim. It was fun to see Peggy Lipton as Priscilla, married to Beth's dad, played by Don Johnson. I first saw Lipton when she was a member of theMod Squad in that very old TV series. She looks great for a lady almost64.SPOILERS: We saw this with James, Emily, and Natalie, it was a Redboxrental. While Beth worked hard to divert the attention of the unwantedaffections, it turned out she had to give them their coins back. Butshe had made a mistake thinking Nick had thrown in the poker chip. Itwas actually an Italian priest who had gambled with Nick the priorevening. Nick fell in love with her for real, and when she found outthen everything was right again in the universe.

Watchable.

Just had a night out with the girls. I am not the typical "chick flick" kind of girl and was not too happy when my friends suggested this but decided to take one for the team. I was actually surprised that it was more comical than I expected. I guess they made it that way so as to give the guys whose girlfriends drag them there something to chuckle at. It really was not as bad as I thought it would be and was actually entertained enough the whole way through. People who give this movie an "F" or even a "D", I wonder if they realize what movie they were going to see. It's not hugely famous actors (though I was surprised to see Angelica Houston in it), it's a cutesy film and it actually turned out to be kind of cute. You should be rating the movie based on it's own merit, who in their right mind would hold this movie up to the standard of "Casablanca"? It's not that serious, but if you want a few chuckles and a little romance, you could do a lot worse.

Disappointed

Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel a darling couple and the scenes short in Rome plus the wedding beautiful but the secondary characters didn't match with the storyline. I almost turned it off but then watched it to the end.I purchased this because of the trailer but honestly, didn't enjoy it with the exception of how they met.

Cute movie with a great cast

This movies not going to win a bunch of rewards and it falls in line with a typical romantic comedy. The script is pretty standard, the cast if great and it has some really funny parts. There could have been more character development as the cast was really good but it still delivers. The critics gave it terrible reviews and they are way off as usual, if the movie has a rating of B or above on Yahoo it is worth seeing.

When In Rome... Get Out

With the release of 2009's moderate hit "He's Just Not That Into You",audiences proved that with enough star power, even the most mediocre offilms could make a smash at the box office. Following the trend, 2010'sfirst romantic comedy 'When In Rome' hopes to achieve the same successwith similar tactics. Sadly, if it's level of quality were indicativeof how far it's legs will take it, the film may have been better off asa straight to DVD release. The star powered film stars such front-line actors as Josh Duhamel,Kristen Bell and Danny DeVito, with an ensemble of B-listers that seemsto never end. Focusing on Beth Harper, played monotonously by Bell, themovie is a meld of fantasy, comedy, and a lack of fresh ideas inHollywood. The film begins the moment that Bell's lead characterdrunkenly delves for coins in the bottom of Italy's 'Fontana DeAmoure', a poor choice which leads to five would-be-stalkers falling inlove with her. The rest of the film is devoted to her trying todiscover whether the one man she does love, Nick Beaman (Josh Duhamel),is truly her match, or merely the same as the rest of the crazedlunatics she's trying to avoid. While the film maintains it's good intentions of romantic comedy lore, there are simply too many wincing moments that seem so terribly dated, quite often put on display with use of Duhamel's character and thepoles that he repeatedly walks into, as example. In terms of overallacting, audiences may prove genuinely surprised by the lead male'sperformance, as the ex-Transformer star manages to successfully portrayhimself as the flawed charmer he is - all despite the massive chasm ofchemistry that he shares (or doesn't) with Bell. In terms of the actingfrom the 'Veronica Mars' star, Bell's fifteen minutes of fame seem tobe quickly drawing to a close, as she continues her simplistic, emotionless portrayal of a girl that is just ever so unique, or atleast wishes she was.In regards to the nearly non-existent script, there are a few genuinemoments that play out as the Director most-probably intended them too -that is to say that they managed to get a laugh from the audience, asad rarity throughout the flicks 91 minutes - a run-time that seems todrag on for at least half an hour too long. Without a doubt, slapstickis the ruling theory of comedy in this film, but if one manages to payclose enough attention, they may find themselves appreciating some ofthe more subtle jabs. Likewise, the observant viewer will undoubtedlytake notice of the plethora of cameos speckled across the film - keepan eye out for the 'Napoleon Dynamite' nod, Pedro included. With all this said, the film is by no means the worst thing to hitscreens in recent memory - said trophy belongs to the more deserved'Toothfairy' - but it definitely has it's niche audience. A definitedate movie, movie buffs may want to take a pass on this for the timebeing, particularly with the multitude of Oscar-Bait movies makingtheir way to to screen. For those truly unsure about the flick, take asafety - wait until it's release on DVD to give it a go; if you play bythe rule of 'Kirsten Bell Looks Confused Again," it could even make ahalf-decent drinking game.

I had no idea that they make such bad movies

I do not go to the movies a lot anymore because I can see from thetrailers already that I am not going to like them. This catastrophe wasgiven to me by somebody who knows my love for Italy and who told methat there were some nice scenes of Roma in it. Yeah, right. Thewedding in Roma looked like a bad Broadway production and everythingelse in this film was so ridiculously stupid and unfunny that I cannotbelieve that anybody could produce something like this and offer it tothe public. Has Angelica Huston been reduced to play in such a drivel?I was not familiar with the actress who played the main character andnow I really do not want to be. She has about as much charisma as acheap doorknob. I think this is the second movie I saw from thecategory chick flicks, the first one was Eat, Pray, Love, which isequally bad. I am a woman, does Hollywood really think this is whatwomen want to see? This is an insult.

Typical But Harmless Chick Flick

I'm not going to lie. Sometimes it is fun to go and see a stupid movie. You'll forget about it in a few days but it is fun at the moment. The plot is your typical stupid chick flick type. There are a few funnymoments (the scene with the little car is hilarious) but it is nothingthat'll keep you laughing for hours. The acting is alright I guess. Noone is going to win any Oscars. The movie might pick up a few razziesactually.Despite this if you are looking for something stupid to watch with yourfriends for a while this will work.In conclusion, this is a typically stupid but enjoyable chick flick.Seeing it with friends helps too.

Really fast shipping!

This review is from: When In Rome (DVD) I bought this for my sister who lives in NYC and I live in the south and it was on her doorstep no more than 3 days after I purchased it. I paid for regular shipping and expected about 7-14 business days. Great!

(2012-05-03 03:41)

Not a strong effort

Kristen Bell is a workaholic who has not had time to find a man to settle down with, yet she desires companionship. While attending the wedding of her sister in Italy, she inadvertently casts a spell over several men, who are now in love with her. Despite a strong cast, this film lacks elements of charm, humor, and romance, all of which are absent in this weak effort.

Cute Chick-Flick Movie!

This review is from: When In Rome (DVD) I purchased this movie to watch over the weekend with a few close friends. It's a movie that doesn't require a lot of thinking. It's entertaining and a cute movie. Worth watching if you like cute and funny.

Wow.... That was horrible!

This review is from: When in Rome (Amazon Instant Video) I'm a big fan of Kristin Bell and Josh Duhamel, but WOW... this was a train wreck! They were both decent in the movie, but the plot and supporting cast were so over-the-top unbelievable and downright idiotic that even Kristin and Josh's best efforts couldn't have saved this flick from disaster. The movie lacked any flow and many scenes left me feeling embarrassed for everyone involved in the production of this stinkfest. If you're looking for a funny, romantic comedy (like I was), LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. I read the bad reviews beforehand, but still decided to give it a shot. Ninety minutes later, I wished I had heeded everyone's strong warning. When a movie receives this many 1-Star reviews, you have to know something is up. Once again..... WOW. SO BAD.

When in New York!!

All those expecting to see a sweet romantic movie based in beautiful Italy (Rome in this case) will be highly dissapointed and I suggest you pick up the DVD of 'Only you' or the recent 'Letters to Juliet' instead. The stock shots of Rome and a few scenes in Rome last for maximum of 15 minutes. The rest of this ridiculous story takes place in New York. So we have Magic coins making people fall in love with total strangers, thunder, lightening, irritating supporting cast and a song and dance finale probably inspired by 'Slumdog Millionaire'.The acting, story and direction are below average. So why the one star..well that's for some truly beautiful shots of New York.

People in the movie

Nick was adorable. Beth was kinda dense for taking coins, would shelike someone to rip her wishes from a fountain? The most upsetting things to me in the whole movie was Nick's friendwho needed a shave and a hairdresser-I wanted to strangle my t.v everytime he was on screen-although if Jack Black had played it- it wouldhave been cute. The restaurant in the dark was very funny. I cannot believe peoplewould eat in the dark- I have trouble seeing in daylight. The magician guy was very annoying. He was just like a talking mime orsomething. Again I gritted my teeth.Even the man driving the stagecoach was annoying. Can't anyone not say"Dude?".Lastly- did Beth not play with a helmet on? She should have spottedreal love from Nick and fake from the others.Beth's story about Picazzo was probably one version that was supposedto be true. I heard through a source people don't want to hear- thatVan Gogh cut his ear off because Picasso refused his love. And he threwhimself down a flight of stairs. Also lastly- I do not think Nick's painting was artistic or sad- mygrandmother was an artist and I have seen lots better that she painted. What was up with that Liza Minelli looking secretary- who I could havegotten very upset because of her taking the coins-what a busy body.As much as I complained about the people it was a very good movie. Also, what was up with Anjelica Houston. She was so mild and sweet inthe Addams Family movies. Damn, she was a monster. The most laughable thing was the little car- that was very funny. I was glad Nick stayed his handsome charismatic self all the way to theend.

Bad Film

Aside from Jon Heder, Danny Devito and Angelica Huston, the actingperformances were horrible. Basically a film starring Kristin Bell asElizabeth Martin looking for love and stealing some coins in a fountainat her sisters wedding in Rome. Something spellbinding happens to thefolks of the coins that she took. You folks can figure it out. Typicalklutzy protagonist, muddling through life, yet hard to identify or routfor her to be happy. The slapstick in this film , was unoriginal.Thiswas a clean film,so more folks can see this. Actually, that is probablya bad thing. My vote is still with Pedro and certainly not for thisawful movie.
