A lot of parts did not make sense

This movie could have been good, I wouldn't have been great though. It is a low budget film, had some good moments but a lot of parts justdidn't make any sense.there's a lot of parts where, the 'super decorated' Mr. Know-it-Allex-military ex-CIA guy, seems like he does not know anything. Thenthere's a part where he is yelling at a male prisoner, and then whenhis female com rad tries to yell at the prisoner, he gets all mad atthe girl. The film attempts to link the (real) Chernobyl nuclear accident withzombies....which i assume is their attempt to make this film worthy.which in my opinion, was a silly attempt.in the beginning, a dude with a bio-suit and chemical gas mask, turnsinto a zombie...but an old man with a gas mask doesn't...hrm.....a guykills a zombie by throwing the zombie to the ground, that'sall...hrmmmm.... then there's a really weird scene with a female justspasming out from anxiety and simply approaches the zombies, just outof the blue and made no sense. and then there's an attempted funnywanna-be-stunt by the male prisoner, where he does an Asian style JohnWoo or Chow Yun Fat diving style with gun in hand, that did even haveto be done. I mean, it didn't even make sense why he was flying thruthe air and diving, because the zombies where kinda far away. and mostscenes with diving and guns in hand, are usually done with gun battlesand used as a quick out of the corner surprise attack...this dude, didn't have to do a surprise attack hahahahahaha....just funny...andI'm guessing they must have even did high fives after shooting thatscene...I actually laughed at the stunt and asking myself why?....atthe end, one of the girls simply just disappears...shes like not in thefilm anymore hahahahaha...she gets saved by some trigger happy wanna-beRambo dude, with hundreds of zombies around...he saves her from twozombies, and there's hundreds left around her...andthen...bammmmmm...where did she go?? did she quit because of lack offunding and her salary wasn't paid? hehehe some reporter dude, decideshes will become heartless and drive off yelling he wont helpanyone..but in an earlier scene he is helping other people...again,hrmmmm.....the acting is bad if not awful, all of the actors. a lot of nonsensescenes, wasted film and filming time...like scenes that just took toolong and nonsense talking. odd positioning of actor/actress...Im guessing the script wasn't solid so they made stuff up as theyfilmed this movie....which is why there was literally multiple, mountains and oceans of errors in this movie....just weird man...weird...you would think that professionals wouldremember certain things....guess not....if you decide to watch this...you can literally fast forward thru 95%of it....so, question is, why even watch this?

So what film were some of the reviewers watching?

Reading the reviews of this film makes me wonder if the writers werelated to the filmmakers. As a lover of Zombie movies (especially the early 1980's Italianexplotationers) I expected from the reviews a cheesy but entertainingfilm.Sadly i got a badly acted, weak plotted pile of Zombie droppings. The Dialoge is bad and mangled by the speakers, The Shaky cam isheadache inducing (This is to overused in modern-films anyway!), The'Zombies' can't make their mind up if they are Slow or fast moving...And so on and so on...Nice to see Ken Foree but one link to a better film (Romero's Dawn ofthe Dead) does not make a reason to watch this! Serbia nil points

Serbian Zombies

This movie is a fun, popcorn flick. It's not the best zombie movie evermade, not by a long shot, but I had a great time watching it.Ken Foree (from the original Romero's Dawn of the Dead) is one of myfavorite horror actors. I will watch anything starring Foree, and hedoes not disappoint here. This is his movie - all the way. And I likedKristina Klebe very much as well - she's very good with the shotgun. The other actors are in the movie for the body-count, but this is azombie movie after all - we need to have some victims, don't we? Thedeath of Yovana (Iskra Brajovic) was the best kill in the movie,Miroslav Lakobrija's special effects are top notch considering thebudget. A must see for all zombie fans out there.3/5

Dreadful

I am generally a major fan of Zombie flicks as theses tend to be one ofmy favourite within the horror genre. However Zone of the Dead a.k.aApocalypse of the Dead in my opinion has to be rated as one of theWORST EVER ZOMBIE FLICKS I have ever seen. At one stage i actuallycould not even tell whether the film was dubbed or was just bad acting. However it may have improved during the whole film but i could not tellyou as i only watched about 25mins or so before i gave it up watchingit before i started to fall asleep... In my opinion i would personallysay to you watch Terrestial TV rather than watch this film as you wouldhave better entertainment, unless you need something to help you sleepat night then this is the perfect flick for you...

Cool little gem from Serbia starring K. Foree and K. Klebe

This is one of my favorite movies from this year. It's very fast pacedand exciting, just like a zombie movie should be.It is a story about a young Interpol agent Mina (played by smoking' hotKristina Klebe of Rob Zombie's Halloween fame) and her assignment inSerbia. She and her men are attacked by hungry zombies and the terrorstarts.Hordes of crazy looking zombies with white eyes are on every singlestreet corner, looking for fresh human pray. So spooky and nasty! But,don't worry. Mina is ready for some shotgun action. And there will be(zombie) blood! Her partner is played by that super cool black dude from the originalDawn of the Dead. He is great too - Foree knows how to kill that zombiebastards.Let's hope there will be a sequel very soon.

BakuryuuTyranno (2012-05-22 08:21)

Hmmm....

This film contains some interesting ideas, including a warrior prophetwho thinks humanity is being punished for... producing global warming. It contains some goofy moments, including a professor who decides tocheck the area has become poison-free. How? By removing a gas mask fromhis head.It contains some downright strange things happening, for example azombie who bites one person, then runs.Unfortunately, that means very little. This movie drowns underformulaic plot points you will already be tired of if you've watchedany of several (hundred?) zombie films released before. If the samefilm were released several times, under different titles, instead ofmultiple films like this getting released, it wouldn't make muchdifference.Perhaps that's why it was called "Apocalypse of the Dead" during theopening credits and ending credits called it "Zone of the Dead"

Refreshing Zombie Movie, Great Fun

i got around to watching this movie yesterday, and to be honest hadlittle expectations for it. i am glad to say my forebodings werewithout merit and i enjoyed this movie from start to finish. after thefirst 10 minutes it is obvious this movie was made on a low budget andthe viewer has to see it for what it is, a low budget movie. that beensaid, with the resources available this is a little gem of a movie forall zombie/horror movie fans. this movie took elements of all zombiemovies gone before and gelled them together quite well. the slow andfast zombie mix was a refreshing twist which worked well and showed analmost pecking order between the undead! i wont spoil this movie bygiving away the plot too much but i will say with a bit more moneybehind him this director could give Romero a run for his money!!

Old School Zombie Cool

Definitely a throw back to the "old school" of zombie film making. Theacting, direction and dialogue are rather wooden and stilted for themost part as with Romeros classics but that said it does give this filmthe look and feel of the originals and thus makes it an entertainingway to spend your viewing afternoon. There are some rather irritatingmoments when the main protagonists whilst running from hordes ofpursuing zombies still find time to stop mid flight to engage in somerather meaningless and throwaway conversation and one liners but notenough to spoil the movie. This movie, although low budget and withflaws does on the whole entertain albeit in a predictable fashion withfew surprises. If you like the old school feel, this movie is worth alook and will satisfy your blood lust, if you prefer the more high end, special effect type of movie, it's probably not for you.

Not half bad

I really love zombie movies, the good ones and the bad ones. This onefalls somewhere in the middle. Most zombie movies I see are terrible, and not worth watching once, let alone adding to the collection towatch in the future.I would say this is worth adding to a zombie movie collection. But ifyou aren't a zombie fan, then this movie is probably not for you.It has about as much drama as a Resident Evil video game, and theacting isn't much better. But it's far better than most of the zombietrash that comes out lately. I would say this movie just barely fits into the top 50 zombie/flesh eating movies of all time.

Hell is going to overflow, and the dead will rise... forever

Well, this movie have good intentions and manages to deliver a fairlydecent entertainment value. As a zombie genre fan, I had to see this movie, and I am notdisappointed that I did. It was adequately put together, though it hadsome faults. The good things in the movie was the atmosphere, that worked quitewell, both in the nighttime and the daytime scenes. Sort of hadsomewhat of a Resident Evil game atmosphere feeling to it.And also Ken Foree, being the zombie movie icon that he is. And the "inyour face" obvious references to his previous work. That line he firedoff about zombies finding a way into a mall, that was just classic. Yougot to love humor like that. The make-up and wardrobe of the zombies was quite nice, though I thinkglazed over milky white lenses would have been better, as it would haveadded that special zombie depth to the living dead in the movie. And of course, a Serbian zombie movie! Wow, who would have seen thatcoming? And they actually make it work quite well. Just goes to provethat you don't need Hollywood to participate to make something good.... Now for the bad things in the movie. Well for starters there was alot of mistakes, where you stop and go "what the...."! For starters, some zombies walk stiffly (like they should, with rigor mortis settingin), while others do the really weird electric boogie-like quiveringwhile walking (those made me laugh so hard, and kind of hard to take aquivering zombie actor serious). And also, as a zombie you are dead, then why did we see vapor coming out from the zombies as theactors/actresses breathed? That one wasn't fully thought through. It was a good effort to have the entire movie in English, but with theSerbian accent and different levels of English skills, it made for amixed experience. Had they kept the movie in Serbian it would have beenmore believable. And while we are on the language part, what was upwith that strange mutated form of British accent on that presidentialsecretary lady?Keeping it in the audio department. The groaning sounds of the zombiessounded like growling lions, that was just too stupid. That made ithard to get into it.And in the police station, the girl says there is no power and theyneed to find a generator, but oddly enough the lights in the ceiling inseveral places is working?...Anyway, despite these flaws in the movie, it actually made for agood watching experience. I liked the movie and think it is quite goodfor a semi-low budget movie. With the constant action in the movie andthe heaps of zombies (and cool zombie make-up) you look past thesemistakes and just laugh at them. This movie took me by surprise. If you like zombie movies, make sure to watch this one.

A Must Watch for Zombie Fans!!!!

First of all "Zone of the Dead" is a genre movie. If you are lookingfor some aEpic masterpiece you are looking in the wrong place. If youare looking for a semi-scary, slightly gory, zombie movie with theoccasional line of laughter, this movie is for you.I thourahly emjoyed this movie. However I am a huge zombie fan and Ihaven't seen very many Zombie Movies that have not entertained me.Zoneof the Dead is one of my favorite new zombie movies. Although it startsoff relatively slow, it builds to a great climax. The dialog for a fewcharacters is a little absurd, but it could also be the acting. Most of the cast does a good job 99% of the time.It explorers the humanelement in the face of death.( (SPOILER ALeRT)Characters reevaluate either values in the face of death and danger, unexpected bonds are formed in order to survive. The Zombie in this story are undead like in the original "Night of theLiving Dead. Tney are not like "The 28 Days Later" creature in whichthey are infecyed with the rage virus. Even though the contagion can bepassed through the bite of the infected, which kills you, then returnsyou to life!!

The first ever Serbian zombie film & it's crap.

Zone of the Deadstarts as US interpol agent Mortimer Reyes (Ken Foree)prepares for his last assignment before retirement, he is to escort aprisoner (Emilio Rosso) to Belgrade with assistance from local rookieagent Mina Milius (Kristina Klebe) & his long term partner Dragan Belic(Miodrag Krstovic). While driving through the city of Pancevo theconvoy is attacked by a horde of flesh eating zombies, neither alive ordead these creatures kill & devour their victims. The agent quicklyrealise what they are up against & decide to form an uneasy truce withtheir mysterious prisoner in order to survive the zombie hordes thatinfest Pancevo. They decide that their only hope for survival is tomake it to the river & steal a boat to sail to safety but with noammunition the odds are against them making it that far...Also known as Apocalypse of the Dead this Serbian, Italian & Spanishco-production was written & directed by Milan Konjevic & MilanTodorovic who must take the blame for making such a piece of crap, evenas far as low budget European zombie films go Zone of the Dead isawful. Both technically & conceptually Zone of the Dead reeks, where doI even start? Zone of the Dead is probably one of those films that youneed to endure yourself to truly appreciate how crap it is. The storyis never properly explained, from the opening sequence with theskeletons to the random military train of toxic green gas that revivethe dead (Return of the Living Dead anyone?) to some of the worstdialogue & moronic character decision making you are likely to see. There's a bizarre scene at the end in which it looks like several dozenzombies are sunbathing in perfect alignment (no, I have no idea whatwas going on) & instead of going around them Reyes decides to walkright down the middle when some screaming zombie in a gas mask comesalong & wakes up his undead mates in a really quite surreal moment thatmade zero sense then & still makes zero sense when I think about itnow. The dialogue is equally surreal, I think it's obvious that neitherwhoever wrote this or the actor's who had to recite it are nativeEnglish speakers which leads to baffling line deliveries & silly facialexpressions, it just doesn't sound like people talking & the phoneticbroken English style the dialogue is delivered is just bizarre tolisten to & watch. The only reason I am giving this crap two starsinstead of one is one neat reference to the classic Dawn of the Dead(1978) in which a character says he feels they should lock themselvesin a shopping mall but Ken Foree scoffs at the idea & says it work!Slightly amusing, nothing else. Also keep watching as the end creditscome up, after a minute or two there's an ultra low budget reenactmentof the opening sequence from the classic Italian splatter zombie filmZombie 2 (1979).Besides being a terribly written film Zone of the Dead fails to deliverthe horror aspects too, whenever there are zombies on screen the camerashakes about violently in a way that I just hate. The zombies randomlychange from slow shuffling ones to fast running hyper active ones &they all seem to roar like Lions. No, I don't know why. The blood &gore content is also disappointing, there's some blood splatter, someminor flesh eating, a few gory zombies (one has it's guts hanging out)& a decapitation but it's very quick & the effects are quite poor.Forget about any scares or suspense as this thing is a real chore tosit through, it drags & is so blandly filmed in boring locations that Ican barely remember it & I only just finished watching it twentyminutes ago.The IMDb says that Zone of the Dead had a budget of about $1,700,000which I think is total rubbish, there's no way a film this cheaplooking & badly made cost that much. Filmed in Belgrade & Pancevo inSerbia. The acting is poor, most of the local Serbian actor's areforced to speak English which none of them seem particularly good at.The legendary Ken Foree needs a better agent & is wasted.Zone of the Dead is awful, there's nothing else I can say as it hasjust about every zombie cliché in the book, is badly made & acted & hasno sort of coherent logical story to maintain your interest. Zone ofthe Dead is one of those terrible films that the only thing worse thanwatching it is watching it again...

Oh dear...

Firstly the good news. Ken Foree is an absolute legend and it's greatto see him returning to the zombie horror genre. And now for the bad news, which is absolutely everything else. Havingread some good reviews on this film, I decided to give it a go as I'm abig fan of zombie flicks even bad ones. It isn't often that I can'twatch a film to the end (The Country Bears being the last one - I evenmade it through the Squeakquel) but at the half way mark I felt likeeating my own head. Around two thirds of the way through I couldn'ttake any more and fast forwarded through the rest, stopping every sooften to see if it improved. It didn't.Allow me to list off some of the things that made this the worst movieI have ever seen.1. The dubbing. At least I hope it was all dubbed. If these idiotsreally speak like this, they should all be shot.2. The acting. OMG! Where did they get these muppets from? Everythingwas wrong and I do realise that zombie movies rarely get Oscarnominations. The body language was completely wooden - not one person(including Ken) managed to look like they really were in the midst of azombie apocalypse. They looked like they were taking part in a primaryschool play and a bad one at that.3. The plot. Seems like the same terrible primary school did the screenwriting as well. If you were responsible for the script then you shouldbe ashamed. Never, ever write anything again. I mean it. Put the pendown. Bite your fingers off. You'll be doing us all a favour. If I can prevent one person from ever having to go through watchingthis drivel, then I can rest easy knowing my sacrifice wasn't in vain. You've been warned...

dmstokes73 (2012-05-17 06:38)

Not good, just not good

The Serbian English in this makes the whole thing clumsy with the plotand dialog getting slowed down and stilted. There may have been a halfdecent movie in here but you just can't plow through the stiltedlanguage. The American actors are B Grade and the Serbian actors are forcingtheir English. The Serbian setting is atmospheric but not enough toredeem the failure of the direction. The sub-plot with about obsession with duty is a steaming pile ofcounter productive This is not an original or even exciting production. The girls arepretty and the zombies ugly but apart from that it has very little toredeem it. Give this one a miss.

Dawn of the Pančevo dead

The long-anticipated "Zone of the Dead" has finally hit the Serbiantheatrical circuit, and so far, it seems the critics are mixed. Plentyvoiced itself positive on this new film, Serbia's first ever foray intoserious horror territory, but also, some people are only too happy tolevel severe negative criticism based, it seems, purely on the factthat "Zone of the Dead" is not Dawn of the Dead, or Day of the Dead, oreven Diary.Well, Milan Todorovic is no George Romero, but the more carefuldissection of this film shows us he never fostered such intentions. AJohn Carpenter nut by self-admission, Todorovic, along with hiscolleague and namesake Konjevic, has crafted here a zombie movie withinsomething you could name a "Carpenterian" creative domain. Drawing hisinspiration from films such as Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing andmuch-reviled, but still cult-material Ghosts of Mars, the young Pancevonative manages to touch on several subjects and still maintain some"horror credibility" which might appeal to fans. The story is something we've all seen before, but the spin is somewhatdifferent. Unlike Romero's "it just happened" basic explanation, Zoneof the Dead weaves in slight political and ecological subplots, whichare very much tied in with the environmental situation in his hometownof Pancevo. In such regard, this picture is much closer to someunheralded genre entries like The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgueor Jean Rollin's The Grapes of Death, rather than Romero's Deadtri...er, tetra...er, whatever-logy. While there are sudden bursts ofgore to be witness (courtesy of Miroslav "Shoestring Savini"Lakobrija), the accent is more on the characters and theirrelationships. It is here where Ken Foree comes to his full strength. Foree, who isnow thirty years removed from his memorable Dawn of the Dead episode, delivers a strong, authoritative performance as a man with inner strifebattling both himself and the zombie plague. It is not too far fetchedto compare Foree's act here to latter-era John Wayne - he still kicksundead ass, but there is some maturity and wisdom attached to hisappearance, and he looks as world-weary and as grizzled as the scriptintends him to be. Ideal foil to him is Miki Krstovic, while KristinaKlebe shows also some strength in her characterization. For all the good things I mentioned, Zone of the Dead is obviously notperfect. "Serbian English" dialog can sound silly and stilted toSerbian audiences, but this effect will be lost in foreign territories, where people are just used to hearing accented English as a sign ofplot taking part abroad. Some scenes lack the intended punch, and theshake-cam choreography will certainly have as much fans as detractors. The biggest fault I found was the usage of HD cameras, as the nighttimescenes look strangely "clear", without the good ol' grain associatedwith shooting on film. In film's defence, however, 35mm stock is prettyexpensive (especially for rookie directors), and daytime scenes lookwonderful with a slight sepia tint adding grindhouse flavour. All things considered, this is an OK horror picture, from a countrywhich has no horror tradition whatsoever. Whether you love it or hatewill be your decision solely, but at very least, hats off to theproduction team for attempting something as bold and looking to breaknew ground into an otherwise stale market.

Whole lotta shaking' going' on

I really can't stand it when people pass judgement on a film withoutwatching it in it's entirety. This is the first time I'm breaking myown rule. I would like to have watched it, if only to see Ken Foree.Unfortunately, no one told me to bring along my motion sicknesspatches. Most of the film was filmed, most annoyingly, and for nological reason, in shaky-cam. I just had to switch off a few minutesin, and back on for the last 10 minutes or so.If it were re-filmed with Steady-cam, I'd be happy to give it anothergo.Unfortunately I'm unable to submit this without two more lines but thatis really all I have to say.

Funny movie

HA! I watched this movie in cinema, and I was very happy after film. This is comedy, not horror. I mean, in Panchevo! Haha :D Look, some guyuse TV Panchevo for sending message to the president! HA-HA! TVPanchevo have signal only in Panchevo! :D But you should watch :DListen... Serbian actors use really bad English, they must practice tospeak. :D And one more stupid: Scene in White house, is in Parliamentin Belgrade. The Story: Story in movie is one of 10 000 stories likethis! Just look, We got average movie from Serbia with dead man... Ithink a lot of '70th zombie horrors are better... but after all... youshould watch this movie, for fun.

jjdosha (2012-05-15 04:16)

Ugh!

This movie is a waste of your time. The acting was horrible; theeffects were bad (even with the proper lighting) and the plot justlacked and lacked and lacked....and i enjoy a decent zombie flick fromtime to time; but this was terrible. A few little peaks of mechanicaleffects, but that is all!! I've seen worse, but not much worse. Thismovie is overcome by characters who are not only uninteresting andannoying, but appear to be movie extras on an audition tape. I felt thestoryline could have been reworked, but everything begged replacement -from the actors to the special effects. This film would favor better asa spoof than a horror flick.

Things to do before watching Borats die to zombies

1. Read the reviews. Compare them. 95% of the reviews are saying thatthis is the worst zombie film ever. But then there is that 5% that saysthey loved the film. Comclusion? 5% worked on it.2. Check the "X out of X users found this review helpful" You'll noticethat all of the reviews saying this movie sucks has gotten a lot ofthumbs down. Strange, considering the fact that MOST of the reviews AREsaying this Zone of the Dead thing sucks. Conclusion? People who workedon it and other Serbians are actually disliking IMDb reviews in orderto make the film look not-as-bad as everyone claims. This film is the worst zombie related thing i've ever seen. I saw it inthe bargain bin for 20SEK (thats about €2) but refused to buy it anddownloaded it instead since i knew that those €2 would be better spenton cancer than this film.Is Ken trolling us? Did he wanna provoke some reaction by doing this?Returning to the zombie genre as a part of the worst zombie film ever? The script sucks. It's sooo wooden, and so is the acting. But what'sfunny is the way they speak English, i was cracking up because it'sliterally like watching Borat die to zombies. And like another reviewer said, tripods are CHEAP. Even the cheapesttripod would do a better job for this film than the shaky camera manwho obviously has Parkinsons.ZotD has 4/10 on IMDb, it should have about 2. And i hope these peoplenever make a film again.

dabby1 (2012-05-14 13:11)

Worst film I've ever almost seen

I'm not sure if this even counts as a review, but I'm a hardcore zombieflick fan. If its been made and it has zombies in it, chances are I ownit. So I've come across my fair share of low budget movies and cheesyacting in my time, but absolutely nothing compares to this film.Straight up, I couldn't sit through the whole film. The acting is sowooden, and the dialogue is so forced, that watching it seems likeyou're indulging children putting on a once-rehearsed play. Apparentlyit was translated from Serbian by a brain-damaged hamster. The averageguy on the street could give a better performance than almost everysingle member of the cast, with a few "yeah okay" exceptions. If you're a fan of zombie movies, don't rent or buy this piece of crap.It scores nil on all draws. I give it ten severed thumbs down.
